To finish - at the end of the aria, the crowd went wild with a standing ovation. As my voice teacher said, the key isn't volume, but tone - one that through correct technique vibrates sympathetically within the listener and the hall, that doesn't need to be forced by being loud. Hong taught me something that night that I'll never forget. When it's done right, no one has to tell you. You just know. I'm pretty sure we all learned that lesson that night.
Hei-Kyung Hong is to my opinion one of the best sopranos of the last few decades and this is a fantastic rendition of one Schubert's most beautiful songs. Oh she does it so tear jerking beautiful. Just love this beautiful soprano.
Back in the nineties I saw Hong in Turandot at the Met, with Pavarotti. Pavarotti's Nessun Dorma received a somewhat obligatory cheer, seeing as it was started by a claque just in time to keep him from having to sing the high note (which never came), but Hong brought the house down with Ascolte. There were literally gasps throughout the house as the audience strained to hold back applause until the last note. Though not loud, every crevice and surface reverberated with her beautiful voice.
I think you must be confused with another performance or different opera house. If my memory serves me right, Pavarotti never sang Turandot at the Met. He was supposed to do it with Caballè in the title role but there was a strike and that was that.
@@jjlungdoc7472 Nope. 1997 at the Met. Memory serves you wrong. If you don't believe me, believe the New York Times: "OPERA REVIEW; A Turandot Who Grasps The Heart Of Sound". Pavarotti's claque saved him from the high note in Nessun Dorma - it had to be a claque, because it arrived right before the high note and his performance up to then, while good, did not merit that kind of wild enthusiasm. Luciano just stood there quietly accepting the rescue and the orchestra played through and then resumed the aria minus the high note.
Yes; I believe the Turandot was Jane Eaglen. Hong stole the show from both of them. I remember a reviewer calling her “the Met’s secret weapon” who could often raise the level of a lacklustre performance.
People who criticize this, that and the other as if they were such great experts, tire me. The only criticism one can really make here is that the video starts after the first note has been played and cuts off before the final note has died away, which is a shame. Not only is Hong's voice beautiful but it is so clear she loves and means what she is singing.
Wonderful rendition of this classic lied. She has the proper "insight" while singing, but still managing to make it sound as beautiful and evocative as possible. Beautiful shaping of the words, as well. Her timbre, of the most velvety lyric quality, also helps a lot. She looks very pretty, what's not a requirement but is certainly a good advantage. :-)
I have heard many sing this including my wife and to be honest, it is such a haunting sweet song I love each one male female pro or novice. yea shubert. This soprano is perfect and true to the feeling behind the song
Great music can have many traits and one of them presents itself as a chameleon in the emotions of its listener. Standchen can be symbolize a lovely moment of passion between two lovers, a bittersweet goodbye, an expression of desperation in which hope and strengths momentarily surface only to vanish cruelly. Doleful whispers of lamentation carried by the vocal strings while the piano as an avuncular fashion accompanies and reiterates the last words given life through the melody. Calming without loosing its dramatic nature, sentimental without relying on unfitting shifts of dynamics, its beginning with the bass ominously advancing while the ostinato figure of the right hand of the piano switches back and forth from 2 positions effortlessly. The notion that the execution of this piece lauds symbolizes is the idea of selfless partnership. The idea of the piano serving the goals set by the melody, eager to give voice to repressed thoughts or gifting its swan song to the world. Much have been said of the beautiful melody carried by the voice but selfless, regal and steady the piano shifts from the background to continue ringing in our mind even after the song has ended. Gentle, attentive it glides as the voice moves, its stomps as the voice rages , it carries as the melody's strength seemingly evaporates... yes it also continues, marches and picks its partner as the melody rests
This is the meaning behind the lyrics, by Richard Wigmore: "Softly my songs plead through the night to you; down into the silent grove, beloved, come to me! Slender treetops whisper and rustle in the moonlight; my darling, do not fear that the hostile betrayer will overhear us. Do you not hear the nightingales call? Ah, they are imploring you; with their sweet, plaintive songs they are imploring for me. They understand the heart’s yearning, they know the pain of love; with their silvery notes they touch every tender heart. Let your heart, too, be moved, beloved, hear me! Trembling, I await you! Come, make me happy!" So beautiful.

@castodivo: That proofs what I often tell people when talking about nationalities: who cares about the color and the size of a passport? They depend on laws regarding your parents' nationality or your place of birth or, eventually, your own choice. This lady is South Korean, but her art knows no geographic borders. Foreign languages can be learnt, pronunciation and expressiveness come with the genes. I am infatuated with her acting, can't help it! Greetings.-
@dinulipati LIeder singing and interpretation just doesn't get much closer to perfection than this. She should really be a teacher at a college and pass on his exquisite talent.
i find more feeling on this song sung by a mezzo.. the drama that adds a lower tone its just perfect for this song... I liked this version, a bit too fast but sung perfectly :)
I deeply dispare for the human race sometimes. How can anyone be led by what is supposed to be (ment) meant. Please do not be led by restrictive opinion. Release yourselves and enjoy high art to the full.
However, I was mistaken about her country of origin. She is Korean, not Chinese, and she made her debut at the Metropolitan Opera ca. 1985. And her German seems quite good - at least the pronunciation.
beglücke , to make happy. "Komm, beglücke mich" is literally "come make me happy" i think. Thats what my singing teacher said it was and she's Austrian so i trust her XD

Hei-Kyung Hong is one of the most under-appreciated treasures in the opera world. Man. She is such a great actress, too!
jasmineblossom84 I think she wanted it that way for her family. But she still performs at MET which matters.

Awesome breathe technique,
strong consonants,
Legato ,
Good pitch
Awesome!!!
Hong Hei-Kyung not only sings with her voice, she sings with her soul. To hear and see them is just incredibly beautiful. Thank you, Hei-Kyung.

Lovely. Wonderful accompanist, too-very important with Schubert.
One of my favourite songs. Beautifully sung!
Absolutely beautiful rendering of this most beautiful song. I was mesmerized by her sensitivity and beauty of tone. Brava!
The best rendition of Ständchen for female voice that I've heard, bar none. Simply breathtaking..
Uma grande voz! Um maravilloso concerto!👏👏👏👏💝🇧🇷
Excellent, voice through the space !
It seems that although this rendition absolutely universally appreciated it is quaint to find one opinion with an anesthetized musical mind.
It is too beautiful that we are in refection of days!
