    If you like the STEADXP and want to have something similar with newer GoPros you want to look into
    ReelSteady. Newer GoPros have the gyro data with the footage and ReelSteady can do a more customized, higher processing power, better job at your computer to take advantage of it.

      Thanks Jon, a lot of my videos are quite rough and ready, I'm aware they could be much more 'cinematic quality' but they are shot while flying, they're a byproduct / capture some raw moments. Filming in flight is usually a compromise, things get broken/go flat/get knocked about ... but if you can tell your story or deliver your lesson, it's good enough!

    Having just recently got a hold of a GoPro, I found the video very helpful.
    However, I have real concerns about the safety of a helmet mount. Thanks for pointing out the risks of getting lines caught (and this can also result in neck injuries when the wing re-inflates or you throw your reserve and the lines get caught, as well as getting the camera ripped off the helmet in less significant incidents). You also pointed out that as a good pilot you should be looking around all the time, making for a very difficult video to watch. But another hazard you didn't point out (and a lot of people are unaware of this) is that in a crash, the camera mount can be punched right through your helmet causing very serious injuries.
    For these reasons, I think we should all be actively discouraging the use of helmet mounts.

    • @greghamerton4422
      @greghamerton4422 5 лет назад

      I hear you Roy, that's why in the expanded article I mention the risk of a cranial implant ;-) Unfortunately, I don't think there is any camera mount you can use which doesn't introduce some added risk of some kind to your flying.

    Fascinating to learn about the 360 camera, surprised to learn it only has 2 cameras !!
    This is series worth continuing with !! :D
    .... Q .... Do you have special microphones for reducing wind noise in flight ?

    • @greghamerton4422
      @greghamerton4422 5 лет назад +2

      thanks Freezatron! I plan to do an audio episode. See the latest video on site analysis, this has good audio, so it is possible to do, but its complicated to get it right when changing camera setups or in flight. The 'chest hair' mic from this episode is a saramonic mic (only active in the bits where I'm sitting in the grass), that's my usual setup for in the air, running to my phone (covered with a flight jacket, so gets a bit muffled but is well shielded from wind).

    • @freezatron
      @freezatron 5 лет назад

      @@greghamerton4422 Is this a wireless mic recording separate sound to your phone and synching in post ? Or is it a Lav mic wired into a sound recorder? Either way I presume your synching sound in post correct?

    • @greghamerton4422
      @greghamerton4422 5 лет назад +1

      @@jonnash70 The joke is on me, in the beginning of this video with the hairy chest mic, it's plugged in wrong so isn't even recording, so I'm using gopro audio there from inside the waterproof casing :-) audio is always challenging. Sometimes I have the right setup for what I end up filming, but not always. Yes the later part is a 'lav' mic (although here I'm using a Saramonic min-shotgun mic) placed near my neck, wired directly to my phone (which I always have on me, so its the best sound recorder). Any voice recorder app will do the job. This is synced up in editing. I've tried various solutions to get the sound into the camera but they are unreliable, drain power, and create cable mess. The problem is I need my camera untethered for multiple setups during a flight/on the ground. The simplest is to cover the gopro in foam 'windslayer' and use a purplepanda lav mic kit to record backup/alternative sound.

  •  5 лет назад +1

    Great video, thank you a lot for sharing your experiences and advices about the subject.
    Have you already tried to use a magnet mount to fix the camera inside the wing ? A built-in solution or something custom ? With or without gimbal ?

    • @greghamerton4422
      @greghamerton4422 5 лет назад +1

      yes I've got a magnetic mount, but the shot is very boring. Either you look down at the pilot far below. Or you have a shot from inside the wing, which is static. There are many camera positions possible, but only a few you can use to tell a story while you're having a good flight.

    Hi, great info. Any thoughts on the insta360 go 2?

  • @SerbanOprescu
    @SerbanOprescu 5 лет назад +1

    Very nice video, as usual from Greg. I've checked the image on a large screen, and the GoPro 4 with SteadXP is less crispy than the GoPro 7. The grass, in GoPro 4's filming, was blurry, as were the buildings (wall edges and windows). I'm not sure but I think it's the GoPro, not the SteadXP, that is responsible. GoPro 7's image was sharp and clear on both checks (to the point I suspected a small amount of in-camera sharpening), but it could also mean that the GoPro 7 simply has better lenses, better sensor and updated processing software. GoPro 4's image is warmer (stronger orange hue), GoPro 7 is a tad colder (towards blue). Overall, a very nice video, as I'd come to expect from you.

    • @greghamerton4422
      @greghamerton4422 5 лет назад +1

      yes my impression too on the grass shots, but later comparing 4K in the air, the difference was minimal. It is the Hero 4, steadxp preserves the original image incredibly well during stabilization. Much much better than premiere pro. I colour corrected the Hero 4 stuff Serban, so don't compare, it's not raw, I was trying to show that with colour correction/post processing the image is very close. Out of the camera the Hero 4 has a yellowish tint which I tried to remove by getting it closer to the 7. It's the stabilization of the Hero4+steadyXP that blows the 7 away, especially when running. I tried to get Hero 7 close to steadxp footage using Warp Stabilizer (in a separate video, not shown in this one) but there was just too much warp, so what you're seeing is straight out of the hero7. I think stable image is more important than pixel sharpness in the grass - it is action filming after all, and if viewers are looking at the grass then I'm doing something wrong with framing the action!

    • @SerbanOprescu
      @SerbanOprescu 5 лет назад

      @@greghamerton4422 It is true, experts say, that there's precious little grass in the sky! And the paraglider image has not much small details, while its movement is the prime concern. I think, though, that on more... terrestrial filming the GoPro 7 might take the edge. I personally enjoyed your videos so far, Greg (story, narration, music, image - what you framed in the shots - and video quality), so you must have done something right! The sound is the only one still recovering from coughing... :) Still, the 7 appeared to me as slightly superior. It depends on the use, in the end, and perhaps also on the user. :)
      PS - Can't you devise a fixture, so to use the GoPro 7 with the SteadXP?

Alternative (what I do) record a soundtrack from lav mic that goes to my phone, and sync it up in the edit program (it's a hassle, but this means the camera is completely free to move - pole - chase - 360 - tripod). stay tuned!

    Hey guys a word of caution on the insta360. I just got one, and my third time launching with it, it broke. The 1/4" attachment on the bottom is weak, the internal frame is very thin there and if it breaks the camera dies because the SD card electronics get compromised. Insta360 doesn't cover this type of repair at all. Mine lasted 3 weeks, now I'm out 500$

If it's just a helmet cam (there's no subject apart from the view) I'll run it on 1080p to increase battery and card life.

    Greg what software do you use to edit the 360 footage? I was fortunate enough to receive an insta 360 X for Christmas, but still trying to find the right editing software to use. The app for the iphone works okey, but when exporting the vid you get a logo on the bottom of the screen. I can't really justify buying Premier Pro to myself, just because I don't do that much editing. I have a paraglide tour in Colombia coming up mid Jan and want to be able to use the camera and the software before then. Any advice will be much appreciated. Love your videos, keep up the good work!

      insta sadly overpromised and underdelivered with the one X - the software for editing is not functional. iphone your best option at the moment, I'm sure there is a tick box somewhere you can remove the logo. Premiere Pro plugin not functional, not in the way you expect it to be. You'll need an expensive very fast PC setup to edit 5.7k footage, the insta PC software is not well designed, and Premiere will just freeze. You can export insta oneX footage in 4k from the insta one X studio software (so you might as well only record in 4K), then open that file in insta studio (the original software for the one, not the X) and reframe it in there. Then throw that footage into iMovie to add your music and other clips etc. To be honest, I've lost patience with all this faff.

      Thanks Greg, I found the button for the watermark. I don't understand why insta don't have editing software for mac, even something like the mobile app on the pc would be better than editing on a tiny phone screen. Anyways, thanks for the reply. Have a lekker day

    You are right about the gimbal. I also tried a few models including the FeiyuTech you showed, they are all hard to control in the air. One piece info I didn’t find in the video was to attach the GoPro to the carabiner with a long gooseneck, that frees up your hands and also gives you some kind of “gimbal” effect. Can point to front or back, up and down all directions. See sample here: www.skypixel.com/videos/sand-city-20180428-by-gopro-6?PCWeb&sp=0

    Which Insta One X selfie stick do you use, the normal 120cm one, or the long 300cm one?

    • @greghamerton4422
      @greghamerton4422 5 лет назад +1

      120cm. I'm experimenting with a long one next, but you want to keep the pilot reasonably close to get good clarity on the subject. give the viewers something large to focus on or they start drifting off to the low resolution horizon...

      steadXP will get rid of the virbations (with Hero4), or try the Hero7 - Tucker Gott seems to do alright with his new 7

    • @PARANOOB
      @PARANOOB 5 лет назад

      I have a Hero 4, so the SteadXP is an option. Ideally I'd have the 4 on my chasecam and the 7 on my helmet. Budget means this has to wait. :D

      @Hix066 5 лет назад

      You could experiment with mounting to the carabiners, that seems a fairly robust method of damping out a lot of vibration. Failing that, get creative with elastomers to come up with an anti-vibration mount yourself...

    Hi Greg,
    thanks for nice video. Just for info, you don't need 360 camera for chasecam. Standard Gopro fits here:
    ruclips.net/video/0ViF6A-eXWI/видео.html
    About safety - I fly with this chasecam for 3 years, it tangled only once during huge asymmetric collapse. After this I flew another 70km, with tangled chasecam without any geometry deformation, because main line is flexible. I know SkyBean is not your favorite brand, but this should be mentioned here, just because no another brand is producing this type of chasecam.

    • @greghamerton4422
      @greghamerton4422 5 лет назад

      Hi Martin, a 360 cam is better as a chasecam than a gopro on a skybean because it provides much better stabilization (your link has tilting horizon and weird jerking follow movements caused by hero 7). A better solution would be steadyXP. I do mention the Skybean in the linked article.

  • @philipbrugger
    @philipbrugger 5 лет назад

    Hey Greg! Nice comparison between all different camera gear you are using. SteadXP is the winner for me, once you figured out how the software works and how to get the best stabilised result ;-)
    But I might buy a Hero 7 as well ... just because I am a gear junkie ;-)
    I also have a interesting comparison video from a chase cam raw footage and steadxp

    Hi Greg! André Badarra got some nice takes by controlling the gimbal head remotely with the use of a cable extension for the DJI Osmo, is interesting. ruclips.net/video/hrbUcdgZJtA/видео.html As usual, many thanks for sharing the alternatives you've found for video recording while on a flight!

    Thank you for all the helpful information - the SteadyXP was new to me. I used a following cam and installed a hand held gimbal onto it - it is kind of scary during the flight as you explained in your video and I would use it only in stable conditions. But the results is quite nice. Here is a link to a video shot with the following cam / gimbal installed on it: ruclips.net/video/-vem6x7j-EI/видео.html

    why not use a cheaper action-cam and get yourself a cool 3axis gimbal??? Safe a lot of money and does even better than the inbuilt stabi you have on that GP7????
