Before Joni became paralyzed, she hesitated to interact with people who used wheelchairs. She felt awkward and unsure about how to act and what to say around someone who was "confined" in that way.
After a diving accident left her with quadriplegia, Joni had to spend months in bed. So by the time she could sit upright in a wheelchair and leave her bedroom, she felt an immense sense of freedom. No longer did a wheelchair seem confining to Joni. On the contrary, Joni's first wheelchair restored some of the independence and mobility she had lost when she became disabled. For decades, Joni's wheelchairs have made it possible for her to go where God calls her and carry out his purposes.
Knowing how a wheelchair can bring freedom, dignity, and opportunity into a person's life, Joni had the vision to launch our Joni and Friends Wheels for the World™ program. Now, decades later, Wheels for the World has hand-delivered wheelchairs and Bibles to more than 225,000 people worldwide.
Following Joni's example, and the call of Jesus in Luke 14 to bring people with disabilities into God's house, Joni and Friends seeks to bring much-needed mobility equipment and Gospel hope to many more people and families living with disability across the globe.

Joni, you and Joni & Friends have done so much for so many!!! I as an RN in my last job, worked with mentally & physically impaired people. Some had never even been up in a W/C or ever walked. Some were on tube feedings. We worked hard to get them into W/C & to walk if at all possible. My staff-behind my back--would try to feed the tube feeders. Some we found were able to eat--just no one had tried!!! So many success stories!! I found much satisfaction there. Regrettably, I had severe Lupus & was disabled at age 37. I am 63 now & not doing well. God has never left a need unmet in all these years!!!

The Lord has worked in and through your life to change hundreds of thousands of lives, possibly millions. Joni, thank you for trusting and obeying, loving and living for Jesus. Your “yes, Lord” has meant encouragement, life, mobility, hope, truth, ministry, new strength and hope, renewed faith and so much more for men, women and children all over the world. People most often overlooked and forgotten by the popular and powerful. Thank you Joni.
Just like that song says, “Thank you for giving to the Lord, I am a life that was changed.”
In heaven, I hope we can run or play soccer or dance or ride horses together !

Good morning! Words of encouragement!!!! Jesus is coming in the clouds and taking the true believers out of here. He’s about to come!!!!! The talk of peace is happening right now in Israel!!!!! My daughter who is severely disabled will be changed and transformed into her new body when Jesus calls up the true believers. I’m seriously on pins and needles waiting and watching for Jesus Christ my Lord and Savior to come in the clouds and take us home!!!!!!

Thank you so much for sharing this perspective. I also think about what to say…or if my presence could be of any help or comfort, but I hear gratitude, appreciation, and humility in your stories. We don’t usually associate wheelchairs with dignity, but I am slowly understanding this perspective through Joni and Friends. All the more reason we should invest in this great gospel initiative to make our Father’s House full and bring new life and dignity to our brothers and sisters.
Thank you Joni, for sharing this story. I was blessed by a living sister in Christ, with a wheel chair. I don’t have to use it all the time, but the days I need it, it’s available to me, to give me the chance to be with my children, or to go to church. I deal with a couple neurological conditions, that have made it so that I lose the ability to use my legs and my arms. My small church family saw my needs and met those needs. I’m so blessed and I look at what you do, and it’s a wonderful example of courage and Christs love. I’m looking at how I can be used in my church when my body doesn’t cooperate. Your example gives me hope that things can be done, and the Lord is using you to show me His Hope. Thank you!!

Hi Joni. I am from Malaysia. I read your book 'Joni' when I was a teenager . That was in the 70's. Found it inspirational and held your story close to my heart. But lost contact with you over the years. Just recently I discovered your videos. I have lots of respect for people who are in wheel chairs every day :) And there is a couple of guys at live at my apartment complex. And I call one of them wheels. And he works at target I have given him the nickname wheels. And he has never told me his real name. And he has never ever corrected me for calling him wheels so until he decides to correct me I will always call him wheels. And he is a very very very independent guy. And one day he asked me a few questions about my situation. And I told him a little bit about my learning disability issue. And the fact that I will never ever be able to drive a car. and he has given me 3 different nicknames 1. Ms bike girl #2 ms wheels #3ms independent And I always laugh a bit about them because their very true about me :) And they always will be :)And I thank God every day for the fact that Jesus has never ever abandoned me :) And Jesus has always been my everything.
