Thank you for recognizing the Chum as a great fish. They are so aggressive they make us all look like heroic anglers. For those asking about eating them, they are not particularly oily and they taste damn good (smoked or not). It's part of the overall bad rep, which is unfounded. Sure if you are going to take a spawned out black fish the quality is not going to be great. However, you take a chrome fish or even a coloured fish with a white belly and cook a fillet on the BBQ (try a simple dill and mayo dressing) you will be very surprised at how good it is. Don't listen to the BS, make up your own mind.
coat it with sugar and salt and let it dry brine for 10mins, brush off the excess and make a crispy skin pan fired salmon, use ghee or butter as the grease for frying . You can even poach it I bet a poached chum (all pun intended :) ) on creame cheese in a sandwich would be great
Aaron Thompson , I'm wondering how many others like you and me could testify, especially since I knew about it as early as 05'. No back cast room finally out of desperation but I went into it a bit heavy. TH 13'6 9wt and T heads.
I just moved up to west WA, and am so excited to learn to fish these waters. Your vids are great. Where can I find river deltas like these near the ocean??
in scotland we tend not to fish for spawning condition fish targeting only the fresh run silver coloured fish . if a coloured up fish is caught it is often not recorded as a fish in the river logbook and they are never killed to eat . im talking atlantic salmon not chum but it is a similar situation
great vid! I have definately encountered disrespect towards the Chum. It's a weird culture around hating these fish. Sure, they might not taste as good. But they fight just as well. Respect for ALL fish!
Just curious if you guys use circle hooks. I find if I use circle hooks I get the fish that bite the fly but don’t snag the others. They work great. Unfortunately not many chummers left up here in BC😪
I use circle hooks when pinning for chinook . just need a longer tag for an intruder type fly. ruclips.net/video/0-gk9-IXTjw/видео.html I use it on the bead rig
Second largest Pacific Salmon finally get some respect - have always wanted to fish for these either bullet chrome or that indescribably burnished / transitional look where they are predominantly still silver, but the markings are showing through. Do your guide services accept Centrepin anglers who strictly use artificials / flies?
I purposely fish the Kitimat when the chum are running. Not many people on the river and nothing but action all day.Strickley catch and release fisherman so they are perfect for me.
Awesome video, I have a couple of commando heads and love them. Quick question, what 7wt switch rod was that, seems perfectly suited for the type of fishing I do? Thanks man.
Im not much for fly fishing but your guys vids are some of the best. I noticed you like to fish for salmon close to the ocean do you find that they take dry flies more often at that stage of the river?
Not to be negative but they look rather small in comparison with the ones I've caught in the stave river in canada. Do you get bigger ones there or are they just a bit smaller?
I think that the fish hat run earlier in the year like these tend to be smaller. Think about how most of those big coho are caught in November, which is later in the year
I need a new rod and reel, should i get a 7 wt switch or a single handed rod? I'm going to be fishing bass, walleye, smaller pike and muskie, and whatever else bites. either way, this new rod will primarily be for skagit casting streamers and poppers. I'm going to need to make at most a 50-60 yard cast. I'm buying your comando head, but what type of rod should i get? any ideas would be appreciated. thanks.
Matthew Laritson single handed rod is the best but a switch will work it's just a little more expensive maybe a 7/8 and you can catch chum with that too
Chum are the least delicious of the 5 species of Pacific salmon. That's my prejudice. Better than no salmon...but that's not really a problem in Alaska. Sure looks peaceful there.
My opinion Chums edibleness is a factor in respects but are a great fighting Fly Fishing animal ,Boom! Just as many are bigots of peoples in race same with Chums sadly
what great ethics and fish handling procedure displayed in this video, it inspires me to be a better salmon fisherman

Ian Collings love that kinda honesty 🤙🎯. Keep that up always
people will keep a dirty black bellied chum then claim all chum taste like shit

I had a place here in Alaska where i could go get Chums when nothing else was getting caught, it was my go to place to catch a fish!
What an awesome video! Well done!
This is a real pleasure to watch. Thanks for sharing your Alaskan experience.

It's a great tool for that!

AWESOME!!! Always love your vids!
Rad video! chums are savages I love hookn em. Pound for pound I think they fight just as hard as a king
Well I just saw - when you released that Jack King Salmon - it was something small and chartreuse. So what's - what. Let's be honest. : )

What pound line are you using
You use hot pink rig like most salmons but smaller hook?

What rod/reel was Trevor using?
there is plenty of places in Washington to get chrome chum
what Fly Rod used /line/flies?
Awesome video, I have a couple of commando heads and love them. Quick question, what 7wt switch rod was that, seems perfectly suited for the type of fishing I do? Thanks man.
That was a Red Truck Diesel 7 weight, 11 foot. Thanks!

Is the 7 weight switch heavy enough for chums?
Great thanks

Yes I would say they are smaller on this river. Some will reach into the mid to high teens but they are in the minority.
amzing videos!!
What is a 2/3, 12' sink tip? (and who makes it!)
Cool!
Are these fish too oily or fishy
You just released good eats king and Dolly’s

It might be the taste?
Believe it or not chum salmon get bigger then silvers :)

Yeah, that's where they get the bad rap. Dog food.
Love the Chum, they will eat your lunch real fast! And snap your 800 dollar rod like nothing!
You got that right!
Nice..J
Bliss.
I've never seen anyone catch a chum in the ocean tho
It happens!
