They could export as much as they wanted and they invested in the things that mattered the most. They are also in great locations so they prospered with a lot of hard work.

I'm a south korean living temporarily in Tanzania at the moment. I might be mistaken but one of the factors that played no insignificant role in Korea's economic growth was education. By that I mean, even when korea was so poor after the Korean war, people put a great weight on children's education. It's more like east asian thing since it's seen in China as well. I believe the investment in children's education planted seeds of development in the future generation.
What a lot of people don't get are these: 1) 75% Singapore citizen are ethnic HAN Chinese who can work very hard. 2) Singapore became developed from a one-party state, and is still largely state capitalist. 3) Singapore 's location is in keypoint of malacaa strait which has many busy trading routs, and it is very free for international tading.
Most people seem to not get it, geographic location is everything for Singapore (initially). And a largely homogenious people which makes their politics less complicated.
@Kleco102 thanks for the correction. It's still easy to manage if you compare with a country like congo Drc with over 400 ethnic groups, or uganda with over 52. Some of them want to break away because they feel their government takes care of their "own" more than others.
Finally, someone is saying what i've always tried to argue, it's hard to explain to Africans about the nature of our people without them getting defensive and angry, they blame everything on colonisation and have this "wakanda syndrome" if only they were not colonised blah blah...BS! it's the nature of our people, we think only of ourselves and how we can show off and look better than someone else rather that a community spirit to better the nation as a whole. Singapore did not look like that in the 80s, Rwanda had big issues in the 90's and they are catching up fast! Medellin, Colombia has suddenly become a huge tourist destination in recent years China is suddenly a big deal! These countries were not exactly at the top of the visit list in the 80s and 90s, but look at what they are doing now! My point is we need to stop trying to find excuses and realise it is our own fault, our thinking is very selfish and corrupt. Ugh!
Absolutely. You can only play the blame game for so long... Especially when other peoples have faced the same hardships or worse and have found success.
This one touched me a lot as an African as a Motswana from Botswana who is still being used by foreigners to alleviate their poverty. I am here saying we were colonies and we are free from that but we still enjoy being under one man who is only looking for his pocket and his family
In 1991 , Eritrea got its independence and the government pledged to make the country like Singapore, instead Eritrea became the North Korea of Africa. Sad!
I didn't know 🇪🇷 had such plan. 🇸🇬 government actually moderate everything well, which can be differentiated into good or bad. Some people, however, don't really appreciate.
I'm a Singaporean. I had friend work before in Rwanda, a local zimbabwean friend and my India neighbor had a nigerian husband. I agree with your view. Its passionate yet true. Corruption is one issue. Other country ripped natural resource from Africa to their own country is true. I told my african friends a long time ago. Africa can be rich, economically rich. 3 hindering factors: corruption, racial conflict and make religon part of politics. But a penny worth tip here from what i learn from my African related friends. Singapore's core is racial harmony and avoid having a national religon. On whole in Africa, other than corruption... theres lack of racial harmony between tribes. Lack Religon tolerance. 0 Racial harmony is a crucial factor that made Singapore easy to trade. Emotional safe. I agree Rwanda is close. If Rwanda can achieve racial harmony...do not let religon interfere politics...then the economy will rocket.
Sometimes i ask myself do our leaders travel outside of Africa and get ashamed how back home is. Undeveloped states , poor planned cities, unemployment etc. Yet every year they hold African union summit and i wonder what do they discuss? I gave up on African union when they appointed Mugabe as their chairman. Visionless leader was leading others the results are as expected
Rwanda has the potentials to be the Singapore of Africa. Singapore is a shining example of what visionary leaders can do. It's a shame most black African leaders are fools - big fools.

Singaporean here, you only need to solve 3 things first. Corruption, education and anti-drugs You also need at least 1 generation to see results. Keep changing president or politics parties is not going to help. You also can look up our HDB / CPF / Military / Monetary Authority Singapore / racial harmony for some of our policy that make Singapore till now. By the way, Singapore’s LOCATION is our natural resources.
Singapore has a very high debt to GDP ratio. They financed their development with debt, which means it is very expensive growth and very financially stressful to live there. What must be admired is the low corruption perception index of Singapore. But the shiny exterior comes at a heavy price in debts.
First and foremost you need a highly educated populace and no corruption. Most Sub Saharan African countries are corrupt and lack the level education. That's why most sub saharan African countries are in shambles for the most part. The only countries in Africa that has at least a decent standard of living is Botswana, Namibia, and Seychelles and Rwanda seems to have potential (Kigali is one of the cleanest and most organized city in Africa). They have competent leaders and hardly any government corruption. Also look at Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, and Hong Kong... hardly any natural resources yet they are highly developed places. How so? Because they highly value education. That said, I can't imagine the situation in South Africa improving when people there still go to sangomas and to witchdoctors. All that stuff is truly demonic. The same for India, I can't imagine India ever being a 1st world country when they worship cows.
The dictator and brutal regime of Eritrea was vowing he was gonna make Eritrea like Singapore when we first got our independence from Ethiopia in 1991 and guess what, Eritrea became one of the most refugee producing nation on earth. I am one of them. Google Eritrea and you will know what i am talking about😥😥. Hopefully one day I return home to heal the wounds and agony of my people.
Let me share with you that the christians in Singapore (protestion/evangelical churches) come together yearly in a large conference hall, to pray for the leaders & peace for the nation. This has been going on for years.
Objectively depends on the country. South Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea god no. But places like Kenya and Nigeria DEFINITELY have the potential. Or Botswana or Ghana for that matter. They have strong values of education, rich in natural resources etc. In Africa i think the main emerging power in the future will be Nigeria. They have a massive economy, educated society, and proximity to seaports. If their political situation is stablized they definitely do. In fact much more powerful than Singapore.
Bro stop putting south Sudan into the same category with Somalia and Eritrea, south Sudan is the richest country in East Africa in terms of natural resources, the only problem we are facing is poor leadership and angry western powers who destabilize south Sudan inorder to benefit from her resources
@@ayor2115 true you're right that was a rash judgement. That being said it will take a long time to recover from the political situation. From then on hopefully they can foster some economic growth.
Singapore is a diminutive state underwritten by a marginal population. To boot, it is of no strategic import to the capitalist imperialist axis whose cutthroat neocolonial predation on post colonial African states - as an expedient in service of international finance capital and its unbridled avaricious purview that extends to all resource endowed domains, not in the least Somalia, Eritrea, and South Sudan - has both overtly and surreptitiously arrested natural development in Africa. Nations whose hydrocarbon concessions alone dwarve Singapore appropo strategic substance. Eritrea has for almost 30 years been subject to economic sanctions, South Sudan has since the 80s been the playground of agents of imperialism to carve out Sudan and unilaterally reroute its oil and gas reserves to western markets until Salva Kiir began selling oil concessions to China fostering imperialist backed non state actors, whilst Somalia was primed for wholesale dissolution as early as 1979 in view of major discoveries of offshore and inladlnd oil and with the organisation of tribal supremacist death squads in London and Riyadh against the anticolonial Pan-Africanist Socialist republic that was Somalia under Barre. Africa's deleterious symptomatic afflictions that have become almost platitudinous are almost always actuated by adventitious agents of imperialism and neocolonialism. But the recourse of the unwitting is to pre-occupy oneself with sophistical teleological treatises on Africas "problems", rather than its root cause, which is imperialism.

Wode Maya you answered your own question. They were able to grown to what they are because they dont have natural resources. African does so the powers that be in the so called "west" will never stay out of Africa or its business because of the natural resources.
Singapore was a British colony for a long time, alot of people actually attribute a large part of their success to that. But you're right they never had enough resources even to sustain themselves. So they had to become ruthlessly efficient traders & advanced technologists. For countries with lots of primary industries there isn't the same pressure and it's easy to be complacent and rely on farming and mining.
Say it again my brother, Singapore like my poor country Sierra Leone are both equal in size, had the same colonial power and almost had Independence at the same time in fact ours was 1964, our GDP was better than theirs for few years. That is where the similarity stopped. Singapore left us in the dust ever since. What a shame!
Singaporeans are.majority descentants of Chinese labourers who came during 19th century to early 20th Century when China was poor and weak, because of exploitation by the western powers. That was when Hong Kong and Macau was forced to be passed to British and Portugal. My grandfather from China too in the 1930s came to Malaysia, which is just next door to Singapore. "Singapore doesn't have natural resources" the western world are heavily involved in the distability of Africa because of resources, if Africa can unite and become a country then they will be able to develop faster, else it'll be difficult for each to survive individually
Yea, it is a whole content, why so they have to unite? Europe is not one country, why do you impose this on a black continent? South America has different countries, and not all are rich..Yea, I agree blacks like to be selfish, but so does everyone else. @@VividReality74 Europeans are United in taking advantage of Africa and blacks are disrespected world wide as a group. There is no where an African would go without experiencing hatred. Africa being one would avoid exploitation, these are new ideas, you don't always have to look to what Europeans are doing until it impacts us negatively, look up how the Chinese United and built their nation(Chinese unification with Taiwan to create a sovereign state), now they're bullying Africa, a United Africa means you would need on source to get through our doors, one source to get through our resources, Zimbabwe recovered their land from whites and paid dearly because africa wasn't United, if Zimbabwe was just another state in the United states of Africa the west would not be able to impose any bullshit sanctions on them, the world is playing on this division, if Nigeria, south Africa or any other African country decides to advocate for full independence, it wouldn't mean shit because it wouldn't have the support of its base which is Africa, so blacks would suffer more no matter what....a United Africa would be difficult to break, each country would just be converted into states controlled by one African leader. Each state would then have governors with their respective military. We would also have the federal African military (holy shit, that would be insane), this would also easily curb corruption as you would have 52 other states sanctioning a leader for corruption, instead of having armless Citizens try to fight their government, this would also mean numbers in everything, we would have more brains working together, technology would be next level, and we would move forward from these traditions that haven't helped us in the last century, what is it that you're holding on to? Why don't you want unification? I mean I could go on forever on how this would help us tremendously. Right now Africans are considered low IQ baboons, who need aid from countries that are injecting Africans with diseases through vaccines, we need to handle our problems, especially as black people, let go of that identify you're holding onto because it will render you blind. These are some of the 5 diseases spread to Africa from the west. We're literally Guinea pigs for these people, there's the Tuskegee experiment practiced on blacks in America as well, injecting our people with syphilis and our women with aids. Some of the major engineering work needed by many companies, in particular the oil and gas companies, are carried out in Singapore. They could export as much as they wanted and they invested in the things that mattered the most. They are also in great locations so they prospered with a lot of hard work.

Singapore got visionary leader while the Gambia got a president who travel to and fro England, visiting the so called queen.
Today Singapore is a developed while Gambia is still dependent on loans and is now a highly debted-country.
I think the major problem with Africa is lack of long-term planning.
Greedy selfish leaders and politicians is the problem

I'm a south korean living temporarily in Tanzania at the moment. I might be mistaken but one of the factors that played no insignificant role in Korea's economic growth was education. By that I mean, even when korea was so poor after the Korean war, people put a great weight on children's education. It's more like east asian thing since it's seen in China as well. I believe the investment in children's education planted seeds of development in the future generation.
What a lot of people don't get are these:
1) 75% Singapore citizen are ethnic HAN Chinese who can work very hard.
Singapore did not look like that in the 80s,
Rwanda had big issues in the 90's and they are catching up fast!
Medellin, Colombia has suddenly become a huge tourist destination in recent years
China is suddenly a big deal!
Welcome to Singapore Wode Maya!

Racial harmony is a crucial factor that made Singapore easy to trade. Emotional safe. I agree Rwanda is close. If Rwanda can achieve racial harmony...do not let religon interfere politics...then the economy will rocket.
They are not running away from their country, got rid of corrupt leaders, big budget for education, healthcare. SA🇿🇦we will rise

Mugabe went all the way to Singapore for his medical treatment instead of being treated in Zimbabwe or Africa.
Rwanda has the potentials to be the Singapore of Africa. Singapore is a shining example of what visionary leaders can do. It's a shame most black African leaders are fools - big fools.

Poor Eritrea 😔 hopefully it can become a ultramodern MEDC one day. Btw an "MEDC" is a More Economically Developed Country.
South Africa looks much like Singapore if not better

@@bw4500 you got this correct

"Singapore doesn't have natural resources" the western world are heavily involved in the distability of Africa because of resources, if Africa can unite and become a country then they will be able to develop faster, else it'll be difficult for each to survive individually
Yea, it is a whole content, why so they have to unite? Europe is not one country, why do you impose this on a black continent? South America has different countries, and not all are rich..Yea, I agree blacks like to be selfish, but so does everyone else. I don't see all of the Europeans wanting to make Europe one big country, they just proved this by Brexit...
