Omg this video was so epic it turned me straight! 😁 I obviously definitely agree with your #1&2 but I'd probably put TRC at #3 because even though it's just a series of flashbacks, it's moment to moments are so fun 😊
As a bitter 30-something who played the originals as a child, I fucking hate how the reboots make such a big deal out of Lara's past. I NEVER cared about Lara's past--never cared about her inner struggles, insecurities, family relationships, any of that. And it's not that I don't care about Lara as a character; I do. But I never needed to know HOW she became the hardened badass that she is; I just want games that take for granted that Lara IS a hardened, overpowered badass! And portraying Lara as fragile and weak, even if it does occasionally make her seem more well-rounded and human, defeats the entire point of Tomb Raider for me.
It's not just Lara Croft. This is now a common trope infesting across all media. Characters can't no longer be simple people doing incredibly amazing things. Now every character has to be a tragic orphan with emotional struggles and overky bearing flaws.
The worst part is the reboot doesn't even build the classic Lara. There's no evolution. She is always the same whiny oversensitive person in the 3 games, who by the way, is completely dettached from the ninja assassin of the gameplay. It makes no sense. They wanted to write her origin? Fine, do it, but they didn't. The reboot will never be the Lara we love because that's "PROBLEMATIC", because reasons.
Loved this 😃 Already at the Luddick bit in the intro, I cracked up hard, and it just kept getting more hilarious from there. Amazing video as always Geek Raider 😎
@@GeekRaider Keeping my fingers crossed for that one. I hope they don't mess it up. If they could just fix a few bugs that would be great, I'm not asking that they restore some ideas they had for the game, i just want a working game xD
Definitely worth mentioning that Phil Campbell did want a means to tell the gold stories better. And there is even a full synopsis of what TLA's cutscenes would have been on Tomb of Ash but he was simply never given the means to do it by Core/Eidos It's really upsetting that the original Core team treated him like shit right from his first day in Derby. For a guy who put so much work, planning and passion into his contributions to Tomb Raider he was the last person who deserved to be treated with such disdain.
I would state that, aside from the ludicrous premise of clearing her name from a murder while silencing others, Angel Of Darkness has the best story for me.
I like unfinished business's lack of story. The Shadow of the Cat looks like we were having a moonlight walk for the sake of it, without any clear purpose or objective. Like a cat wandering randomly on the rooftops by night, having his secret adventures that nobody will know about. When we explore the Temple at the end, it's like we had found a gem that we weren't even searching for.
Before I'd even watched the video, I knew what number one would be, and you are SO RIGHT. AoD is an absolute classic, jank and all ❤ another stunning video, as always, perfectly edited and narrated, with just the right amount of butts, nips, willies, and farts *chef kiss* honestly couldn’t stop laughing, especially at the intermission 😂 please never stop
Off topic but TR Legend has got the best music right after TR1. When I played it for the first time I was like WTF! , especially after hating the other versions of the main theme in the rest of the classic TR games. Kind of Gladiator style, and fkg amazingly epic.
@The-Man-On-The-Mountain legend does have some great tracks. Personally I prefer AoD cos it was done by a live orchestra. But yeah, TR1 and Legend have some good tunes
WOOOO a new video by Geek Raider!!! ❤ Sooo funny and entertaining as always. BUT(T) 🤣 My favorite TR stories are 3, 1 and 4 as I don’t like the family background stuff…
Good job, thanks for the video ;) For me, I know the stories I like, but making a top... it's hard^^. I think it's... 12. Tomb Raider 2 : The plot at the beginning is cool... but that's all. Only 3 dialogues : the last one after only 6 levels (/18) and any conversation between Lara and Marco or between Lara and the tibetans at the end (they leave her finding the dagger and... that's all ?). And I love the Temple of Xian as a level... but seriously, Lara is ahead during all the game but Marco gets the dagger because of a stupid trap ? 11. Tomb Raider Underworld I don't like the way Natla is added in Legend's story. Because TR1's story is originaly independant. And because Crystal Dynamic probably didn't think about a remake of TR1 when they wrote Legend's story (it's Core who began the project of remake). And how was the relation beteween Natla et Rutland anyway ? Also, Amanda is too much absent during the game and the doppleganger is fucking useless in the main story. 10. Tomb Raider Chronicles The different stories are cool but... Lara Croft is dead ! Have fun ! Seriously, the idea of flashback just show that the game exists only because Eidos wanted a Tomb Raider game for Chrismas 2000. 9. Tomb Raider 3 I'm hard compared to you^^. I like TR3's story but... maybe it was too simple ? Maybe because we had a few little stories in One. And Willard's plan look like Natla's. 8. Shadow of the Tomb Raider I love the main story about Kuwaq Yaku. And I love the game's atmosphere. But the link between Kuwaq Yaku's story and Trinity is... weird. How Dominguez can really be Trinity's chief ? A puppet, why not, but the big boss ? And finally Richard Croft did'nt die because of the Divine Source ? The story of Rise became useless ! 7.Tomb Raider 2013 The myth is really cool in this game. I liked Lara's evolution and some characters like Roth. But maybe we have to save Sam too many times... 6. Tomb Raider The Last Revelation I like the rivality between Lara and Von Croy. The myth is cool in this game too. The end is tragic when we thought about the beginning of the game. Little quibble anyway : Lara's origins looks like a little retcon (what about the plane crash who transformed her ? And yeah, I know that accident is only mentioned in the manuals). 5. Rise of the Tomb Raider On certain points, the story looks like Tomb Raider 2's. But better ! I love the two antagonists in this game. 4. Tomb Raider Anniversary The new elements in the story are cool. Like the relation between Lara and Larson. Maybe I don't like the idea that the Atlantis gods look like more ""magicians" than scientist using technology, compared to the the original. And... we don't know what become Qualopec and Tihocan finally. 3. Tomb Raider 1 Yes, the story is very simple. But I don't know, for the first game of the franchise, it works ! I love Natla and the myth of Atlantis in this game. And I love the punclines too ! 2. Tomb Raider The Angel of Darnkness Honestly, the story isn't perfect. I mean : how Werner can be scared about the Monstrum ? He's the leader of VCI, he had a lot of minions and technilogy ! How Lara can fucking kill the staff of the Louvres while she is wanted ? But in the same time... the story is the best element in this game. The atmosphere is great, the myth is cool and I love Eckart ! 1. Tomb Raider Legend The best story of the franchise. The myth about swords in the stones is great, Lara's past is intersting (about her parents, but her friends too, like Amanda) and it's dynamic : we never get bored in this game. Really, I love Legend's story ! (sorry if my english sucks)
Thanks for the awesome comment! You make a very interesting point about von Croy being scared even though he heads VCI. Perhaps he lost all his minions after Lara destroyed the HQ in TR5
This list is fucking based. 1. I also would have put Tomb Raider 3, 4 and 6 in the top 3 ranks. 2. NOT seing any of the reboot trilogy in the top 5 is also based af. ps. That nostalgic music of the Last Revelation always gets me pps. If we would have gotten the complete trilogy of the Angel of Darkness, the story would have been even cooler
Had to Google the meaning of based 😆 thanks I appreciate it! I dream for the AoD Trilogy to be fully realised but for now here's to hoping for a remaster!
@@GeekRaider Yes but the quality is decreasing. In the next TR Lara is supposed to be a Protector of artefakts. And we do talk about a TOMB RAIDER game.
Last Revelation is my overall favorite TR, but I have to admit that it has the worst story. Seth being released and threatening the world with doomsday was 100% Lara's fault. She saw the pretty-shiny ankh and swiped it without thinking about it. When she was told what she had done, her idea of "setting things right" involves everything BUT returning the ankh from where she took it from to restore the seal.
As a massive TR fan, I surprisingly agree with all of your takes here!! Happy to see TR1 / Anni not at number one just for nostalgia's sake. And soooo happy to see TR4 so high on the list. Hahah love the video mate. Well done! 👍 I agree with your Top 3 “BUT🍑” I would put the reboot & Legend and Underworld’s story above any expansions or TR5, even TR2 maybe. Even though I’m sick and tired of the mommy issues and some of the characters in these stories were forgettable, the stories were averagely good.. IDK, it depends on the day tbh haha

You shouldn't fuse Anniversary with TR1. The change in Lara's background and motivation is a catastrophic alteration to this game's story that's impossible to overlook, and a pretty desperate and pathetic interpretation of the original. The story is not made better when it's been rewritten to be about Lara's parents, nor does the implication that this supposedly seasoned adventurer has never killed. Nearly everything has been reinterpreted to fit into the LAU timeline, which is just one big long excuse for itself. I also dislike the story of Rise of the Tomb Raider immensely. The two main villains are both unconvincing and poorly conceived, the daddy theme is non-stop, the narrative is dour and humorless, and this new beleaguered Lara doesn't even seem to enjoy her own company. I also hated the heavy-handed anti-religious theme of the story, though I don't know if it was intentional or not. I felt like the writers were hitting me on the head with a brick at every possible moment, as if to say: "See? Those who can make you believe absurdities can make you commit atrocities!" The message of the "prophet" is an anti-prophecy about the unknowable nature of the divine, the only characters who talk about God are overt villains, the game goes out of its way to avoid suggesting that religion has any validity whatsoever, and there no examples of faith having a positive influence on anyone or accomplishing anything good. In many ways, this game is the spiritual antithesis of Tomb Raider chronicles, which features the likable Father Patrick as a supporting protagonist and amateur occult detective. You know there's no way in hell a priest would be portrayed intelligently or sympathetically in the world of the reboot trilogy.
That reminded me of a lot things. I'm bored of the anti-religious trope common across video games and films. There needs to more a lot more varied and interesting philosophical plot points to explore in media than overusing the "religion is bad" all the time.
