Very interesting, cool seeing Doddy smash trails. Don't get to see him ride enough these days.

Ducking hell not seen doddy ride for a long time absolutely flying well done lad👍👍
This comparison is a true breath of fresh air - with no attempt to quantify the changes by timing various runs. The information Doddy is providing is exactly what I want to have in order to make my own choice.
Speed runs can’t be statistically meaningful unless very carefully controlled with numerous runs, multiple testers, double-blind methods, days and days of testing and competent statistical analysis. Kudos for steering clear of doing a bad job of all that.
The video work is superb and seeing Doddy ride so well only deepens my respect for him. Thanks for such good testing and reporting.

Coil at the back
Air at the front
Nah, I got coil front and back
bottomboom ok
why you chose front and rear? I have air on both rn on my canyon spectral and I really don’t like the feel of the air shocks it feels like they want to buck me off sometimes when I hit big table tops
@@Jakehtims thats gonna be your set up then

So mullet set ups hit suspension as well! Air (business) at the front, coil (party) at the back 😋
Love seeing Doddy rip the trails! Get him out there more!
Doddy is such a smooth rider!
Hard tail : suspension at the front
Full Sus : Front and rear
Hard front : Rear
Hard front sounds like death lol
You look smoother on the coil setup. Yes a bit heavier. Most setups on air are set by factory clicks.. yes work great. Can't beat a twist of coil n oil.... coil up front Doddy with a Ti spring? Awesome as always. Hammer on Doddy.
My XC bike is air/air, But a ride an E-bike as well, air up front and coil on the back, because of the weight of an E-bike and the way it rides, the coil on the back seems to work really well for me, it's planted and gives great traction for the techy climbs
Never knew how smooth of a rider doddy is, great video gmbn tech 👍
Doddy flowing in the trail like wind, awesome vid! Awesome comparison
Just bikes, all things bike bring a smile to my face. I love them all!
gotta love when air shocks fail...when they fail they fail big
I've been so excited to see this comparison video Doddy! Finally got some time to watch it.
Great riding bud! Didn't know you had mad skills like that boy.
Love this one Doddy (and team)! Just so pumped watching you talk about bikes... going to go put on some rain gear and ride now!
That was informative. My LBS checked my coil forks on my old Marin and told me they were fine. They didn't even need servicing according to him.
Doddy, I'm still riding my Z1 BAM, serviced twice if I remember, still kicking ass and still bouncing just right.
Excellent video!! Great descriptions from Doddy, of characteristics of air vs coil, & his preferences! He certainly didn't look slower, riding coil, that's for sure!
great video discussing the pros and cons of a spring suspension vs. air, i really learned alot from this video
Love that combination. Air at the front coil at the rear but you make me wonder to try coil forks again!!!! And love the idea of cero mantinece as well jajajaa chesrs mate!
Air in the front and coil in the back is the way to go
Interesting video, oddly enough I’m playing with this exact topic now with my bike. Rear coil is on its way!
Nice video! Very prevalent for me as my air shock on reign finally blew out and I got a DVO jade coil! Being 205-215 with gear, I know I push hard through the bike on big compressions and so I didnt want to be under coiled for that. Ended up getting a 650lb coil and its amazing, it is very steady while climbing, might have something to do with the maestro suspension from giant, but I do feel that sluggishness. It is only noticeable when the dirt is soft but I will take that trade off for the way it feels descending. I plow through things with finesse, kinda Haha.
Doddy love your point at the end of the video, it's great to see you have air and coil in your bike and you have given your fair opinions on both types. Keep it up guys!
welcome to the world of coil, DOddy
My v4 nomad feels like it can go through anything effortlessly with a coil on the back. I have a remote lockout and I think that gives me the best of both worlds. I lock it out for climbing and it feels more efficient than it ever did on air.
I love riding rough rocky stuff so I'd like to try replacing my lyriks with coil on the front at some point.
If you don't mind not going back to air in those lyriks try push's ACS3 upgrade maybe, cheaper and better option imo. and you still get bottom out tuning.
im always impressed by how good of a rider doddy actually is. We rarely get to see him ride like this!
🤦♂️🙄
I run both on my hardtail.
Hey GMBN tech! Hey Doddy what you need is some offset bushings to lengthen the coil rear shock and that will raise the bottom bracket a little bit! Imagine a system that would rotate the offset bushings 180 degrees when desired via a handlebar lever!!!! Ride ride ride!
Canyon sort of did it with their shapeshifter system.
Shapeshifter.
my yeti dh bike had this feature, I could change the angle of the bike which would also raise or lower the bb height. loved it, one for technical and clearance and the other for flow trails.
Doddy can SHREAD!!
Cool seeing doddy shreddin
Looked like a pretty fair n thoughtout test.
Ide love to have the money to buy different shocks to see what works best for me but pretty sure that aint gonna happen lol
Ohh guys, I was so much waiting for this video!
Thank you very much!
I guess my bike will be equipped with coil due to the ease of maintenance and the responsiveness but yeah waiting for money first...😅
i run both air and coil on my SC nomadv4 depending on the type of riding trail and conditions
hat do you use air for?
Interesting comparison Doddy.
Love the acdc sign
Conclusion: coil is more smooth and he dont feel the rocks, but he wants to feel the rocks (ground) so he chooses air
I have EXT Storia LOK V3 so it has a climb switch, it's a coil shock, Doddy and the rest of the crew already know this. I haven't had a problem with my Geometron G1 being so low, I run 175 mm cranks, I haven't tried shorter yet, and don't really use the climb switch, but I have tried it, but climbing without it feels great, I made sure to get get used to the bike, and I feel at home on it.
there is no way that I am going back to air, with coil I don't have to worry about adjusting pressures often.
Up front I have fox 36 with Vorsprung Smashpot.
The EXT Storia LOK V3 has got a lot of good positive comments,, I saw several ppl on Geometron owners facebook group, say the same thing, but one dude there has tried the Fox Air alternatives and the coil shock from fox, and he wrote Storia v3 is much better, I don't remember exactly what he wrote.
Came to the same conclusion myself, Cant be convinced that air up front can be beat for me. looove a coil off the rear though.
I have a twin disc Z1 Bomber. Still my favourite fork, still works rather well for it's 23ish year old age!
Kept checking to see if they super imposed Doddy's face onto a super shredder, nope just him showing off, nyce bruh!
“Let’s see how this coil shock feels!”
*this is a fantastic fork*
If you like to pop off stuff then get an air shock. If you like getting the most traction, suppleness and cornering use a coil. For climbing, air is always more efficient. In a perfect world we can swap out when we want but overall air is more versatile.
i like the coil for the small bump sensitivity, air i might run on dirt jumper
I would think air on the front, coil shock on the back with a progressive spring would be the best combo. Tempted to swap mine out on my 2020 Norco Sight.
Videos of Doddy riding>>>>
This helped me a lot. I'm a bigger guy (6'5") and I care more about easier climbing. Don't do a lot of rock gardens. At worst some roots. So it sounds like I will be going air suspension.
It’s funny, sometimes I think we forget the the Doddy can proper shred.
Coil shock on rear is amazing, rockshox super deluxe coil has option to easily crank compression up on fly as well as climb switch which makes it climb just as good as air and probably better on tech. Harder compression on coil rear and only real downside is weight but air have slightly better pop. Coil shock so good down rough stuff.
My new bike is coming with a Super Deluxe Coil RCT :D
Quite an interesting video by all accounts
I run a Lyrik Ultimate 180mm up front and Rockshox Super Deluxe Coil RCT rear- 19 Reign Advanced 0. This set up is a beast descending loves the rowdy stuff. Still no where near the limit of the bike, it never says never. It also climbs very well for what it is
Same on my new bike, except a Lyrik RC.
Doddy shredding whats not to like !!! :)
Great video Doddy and #GMBNTech
Airfork / coil shock . :)
Coil shocks shine when you ride in a lot of different temperatures
Would love to see a review on the MRP Hazzard Coil with their Progressive Spring.
Great vid bud. Try going light weight progressive spring doddy on the rear and go up to a stronger spring for your weight on the front. It will surprise you.
Cane creek coil front and back for me.
Plush and some launch.
Love it.
Change oil height/volume to modify progressiveness.
Thx!! Nice review!
Good review Doddy and I'm really glad that you swapped the forks back to airshocks at the end, as I think that this is the most realistic situation for the vast majority of riders. 😁🤙
Yes, I.E. avg riders. Air is good enough for us punters snd even some pros too. But, coils are better, especially as the skill level increases.
Comparisons like this are interesting, but to be fair, there should be at least a custom rocker installed for coil shock in this air bike. Something that GMBN will do one of those seasons.
Did you do any set up at all with the coil arrangment? At least change spring rates at either end? It sounds like you just assumed the shock would ride worse if you added compression damping, but depending on where it was set to that isn't always true. I wonder if you needed to go up a rate at both ends?
Put a progressive coil spring on the rear and give us your thoughts
I would like to see the review with the fox fork and coil shock.
Mazochoi are fox, fox is mazochoi same internals as fox its just a tad lighter
Bikingis4me But he used coil on the fork not air
@@MChila he was seeing if coil or air is better for the fork as well
@@bikingis4me48 Not always. In this case (on the fork) he is comparing the the top Grip2 damper vs the budget Grip damper on the Marzocchi. If he used one of the cheaper/oem Fox forks with the same damper it would have been a more fair comparison and maybe the end result would have been different.
I would prefer to see the brand NEW Öhlins fork and TTX22m.
Good video I think I will try the same thing!
Try 30% sag on air vs 25% sag on coil, it should compensate for the more linear feel of the coil. I run air/coil front/rear on my 29er enduro
🤦♂️🤦♂️🤦♂️ 30% 🤣🤣🤣
🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄🙄
How much do you think that the front and rear are dependant on each other, I mean to say, that do you think that the rear shock would feel different with an air fork and vice versa? You described the lack of feel of grip for the coil fork, do you think that has an effect on how the shock feels in the turns as well?
Front and rear very dependent on each other. Balance is key. Weight bias, brake dive & pitch.
Would you be diving into progressive springs? such as MRP
Me: * laughs in treccing bike that's front fork moves when braking*
nuice vid doddy
Ok... how mutch is air paying you?
Much*
@@Zi-yoonlol
I had a feeling it was heading to air fork and coil shock.
My setup on my old bike is a coil sprung fork and an air shock rear. They do work very well together.
lmao ew
You could try a push industries shock or a MRP progressive spring. Or the push industries hybrid air spring front fork...
Ext has their hydraulic bottom out control
Очень интересно. Спасибо 😊
guys i just bought the giant glory 2013 nice bike for the age
Hey Doddy, can u try a cane creek coil with climb switch and let us know if that helps as much as they say it does?? Also loved those show mo shots of the coil fork!
Super Chunk - Coil....Flow - Air, but damn it gets expensive to have both.
For downhill air shock won't work because the air in shock chamber will modify the temperature from sustained friction and will increase the volume, resulting in a stiffer shock.
air is free ill go with dat 1
Did the coil in the rear stay?
I’m using a mazorachi junior coil fork from near the beginning
What's more robust spring or air !?!?
Awesome video.....
Should do air front and coil rear then do air rear and coil front next 👍
Idk if someone sees this but are the coil forks the one that you fill up with oil well atleast on dirt bike and air is literally only air
Oil and air forks are identical on the damper side, coil fork will have a spring in one side and air will have an air spring. Both have oil in the damper side.
Hmmm tough one to call Doddy, maybe repeat after dialling in both set ups on two or three identical bikes with different riders over a month or two so the riders get used to and develop a coil riding style, then add in some telemetry......facts as well as opinions
Would a heavier spring get you closer to where you need to be .... or a session with the fox boys and girls would also be fine to see how they can fine tune that coil shock for you
@GMBN Tech Doddy have you already tried the coils from MRP which advertise to have a progressive feedback, would love to hear your opinion. Cheers Sascha
The amount of weather changes throughout the video made me laugh!
It sounds as though air is better for trail and coil for downhill. A beginner is probably better on air since the ability to plough through things may not only get them into trouble (bigger crashes) but also in the long term, coils might have beginners build up complacency and unhealthy and lazy riding habits.
Good detailed analysis though as always 👍
Which brand is your MTB
Mine is Scott.
I'm over 300lbs and I can keep my rear air shock from bottoming out when using near max pressure in the shock. However, I'm looking for some suggestions of the most heavy-duty high pressure AIR shocks that would be a good fit for me that I maybe don't have to max out. Everyone tells me to get coil but air seems to be working ok for me and I like the feel better. Any suggestions are appreciated!
I like air in the back and coil in the front but that's just me. You get more adjustability in the back where you need it with the air. Up front coil is better, it always has been. Just now people starting to realize that, and Coils are making a big comeback.
Adjustability is not damping. Who cares about finite sag 🤷♂️🤦♂️ Comp/rebound more important. Air is limited
Is it possible to remove shockers on my bike, and if so, will it break my bike if i remove the shockers? And if it doesn't break the bike, how can i exactly remove the shockers?
Do you have any tips on how to take the trails faster and take those turns faster because I want to ride like that
Well since I am mainly riding DH it’s not really a question for me
So air is better for popping into berms and over humps and coil is better for pretty much everything else
