United States President Bill Clinton on Saturday afternoon (2/12)

Germany. After lunching with some of them, he emerged from a
briefing with Chancellor Kohl praising the alertness of the troops
and commenting on their committment to the humanitarian mission in
Bosnia. Chancellor Kohl expressed his view saying that "it had been a very impressive day, that he was gratified to be here and able to say
what the alliance had meant".
SHOWS:
SMITH BARRACKS, BAUMHOLDER, 2/12:
clinton and Kohl emerge from briefing
sot clinton "i have just completed briefing from our military
commanders about our plans to deploy in bosnia to enforce the
peace agreement.. and i received a report about the meeting of
NATO which in essence approved the military plan for implementing
the peace agreement which i signed a few days ago in the oval
office. i feel good about what i saw about the morale of our
troops as you saw i shook hands with several hundred of them and
had lunch with a significant number of them. i think their morale
is high. they are well aware they have been very well trained.
they are supportive of rules of enagement which give them the
tools they need to do their job. .. more than anything else, the
men and women are committed to the humanitarian mission of saving
the lives of civilians they know they are going there in peace to
facilitate a peace agreement. this is very different to being
involved in a conflict. i feel good about where we are. i also
have a wonderful extended visit with chacellor kohl and he sahred
his thoughts with me and germany has been a great partner in this
and in some ways borne the heaviest financial burden of the
bosnian war because of the many hundred of thousands of refugees
being sustained by the german people.
Kohl sot (German with translation); this has been a very
impressive day that we shared. i am gratified to be here and able
to say what the alliance has meant these past 4 decades. for us it
has meant peace and freedom for our country.. it meant we were
given the opportunity with our american friends, overcoming the
divisions of germany. i don't think there's any other place to say
that than here i am confident that this message in the united
states then millions of americans will remenber when they were
here in this base in Baumholder.
