Damon was actually partially right about Taylor not writing her songs, assuming he knew about Max Martin. Max Martin is a song writer who has co-written many popular songs from the 2010s. A fraction of these songs include CANT STOP THE FEELING for DreamWorks Trolls, Love Me Like You Do by Ellie Goulding, Roar by Katy Perry, So What by Pink, and many more.
He has written a lot of Taylor Swift’s songs too. Here are a few of them:

Something I’ve noticed about songs Max Martins has co-written is that they all… suck. He has a very recognizable pop-ish sound that you can quite obviously hear in Taylor’s songs. I do know that Taylor has written plenty of songs herself, and when she does write them herself, they’re even better than when she co-writes them with Max.
It wasn’t very nice of Damon to discredit all the work Taylor has done, but I do see where he was coming from. Max Martins writing style was a horrible influence on music imo.
(I did some research after I wrote this and I believe Taylor stopped working with Martin?? I’m not sure, but if so, good for her)
I like Max Martin's work with The Weeknd. There's something different about it, that makes me feel like The Weeknd has a stronger contribution to at least the artistic direction of all his work than other pop stars. That being said, I ONLY like Max Martin's work with The Weeknd. Other than that, I agree

I should add. The most commonly used comeback to Damon I've seen is also always to do with how he's nothing compared to Taylor. Yet his mistake is for some reason really damaging. Surely if he's so unpopular then his misinformed take shouldn't be that big of a deal? All Taylor had to do was respond saying that's not true.
I can't believe we're using the number of people who are aware of one's existence as a measure of validity.
Not to mention the responses from her fans. So intensely hateful. It just reinforces how important his "reject false icons" idea is. Makes me a little ashamed to be a swiftie.
It's clear to me that Damon was misinformed and just used her as an example (unknowingly incorrectly). There was no ill intent. I can understand why he made this mistake as many similar artists don't write their own songs either. Even the interviewer implied she didn't write any alone. "That's not true" "she co-writes some of them." Instead of just saying she writes some. Which supported Damon's belief. In spite of all this, Damon did not say this was a bad thing, and goes on to compliment a singer who never wrote any of their songs.
I'm a fan of both the works of Damon and Taylor but the response from the latter felt a little excessive.
He did it for the trend. I think he has some new music and it's better if people talk about him good or bad so he can promote himself. What a low move. So disappointing to see an artist doing this to another artist, especially a woman.
He did it in an interview and I'm pretty sure it was an attempt to pick up the reputation of a potential future collaborator. His music often does have a pretty wide audience when it comes out but it is an incredibly low move.

But I think he was trying to address an issue in relation to co-writing in the music industry, particularly with pop music, but falsely assumed that Taylor Swift applied to said issue

Taylor Swift has writing credits on ALL her songs, and there is enough evidence that she is very deeply involved in the cowriting. Not to mention that she is the sole writer on a large number of her songs and has written her 3rd album entirely by herself.

I wouldn’t apologize she doesn’t write her own music because she can’t play in instrument proficiently people that write music are extremely good in instruments and she can barely play. She’s strums and she’s fingerpicks. She’s not a professional musician. She’s a semi professional singer and musician. She is an entertainer. I’m not even going to waste my time with this because I’m becoming famous as a musician. We need to get 18 year olds and 20 year olds out there. She’s almost middle-age and just start getting some really young people in the door so we can get these people who are not really professionals out of the window.

He is old enough to know the facts before giving a statement. He especially as an artist, definitely knew who Taylor Swift is. He is a kind of person that needs attention. To be fair, you could do that with a large amount of Damon's songs as well. And any other song. Because songs are literally just poems written to a beat. And I don't really see how his career needed him to "rejuvinate" it, as he's been incredibly successful lately and has a massive audience. One of his bands even has a world record.
My theory is that it was to bring her down in order to make other singers, who he could collaborate with, look better. Also, he's always had some pretty strong views on mainstream music as well, which are seen here. Honestly, it was one hell of a low move and as a fan of both Gorillaz and Taylor Swift, I'm kinda disappointed in him and hope that he could at least do some basic research before commenting on another artist in such a way.

Damon Albarn was literally in the top 2 most famous rock/pop bands in the late 90s and he was the front man for his band, + the later solo/gorillaz career has continued very successfully up to this date. Hear me out, I'm a fan of Damon and Taylor's works, but Damon is in two bands, which means that he would have a split of the total net worth. Additionally, different genres are more popular than others, and, whilst he has had many major celebrity collaborations, a world record, several world tours, many highly successful albums, books and an interactive story that has produced many games and merchandise, Taylor is understandably more popular nowadays, likely due to more consistency in genre, and, which Damon got wrong about her, some pretty impressive writing skills when it comes to music. This is a really rushed reply but, to conclude, neither of their careers are going anywhere anytime soon and honestly this whole series of events is incredibly petty.
By his logic, Lennon-McCartney were not songwriters. Nor Elton John-Bernie Taupin, Henley-Frey, Rodgers & Hart, George and Ira Gershwin, or Holland-Dozier-Holland who wrote all the Motown hits.

And when I say basic, I mean all of those songs had 3 or 4 chords and they were Am, G, F and C most of the times. You can write basic and enjoyable songs (The Beatles have a lot of those) but these were boooooringggggg.
