Mutazilites critical approaches to each other should not be seen as a lack of respect for their masters, Criticism from disciples was stimulated by the Mutazilite masters. This may be a corollary of the great importance the mutazilites attached to independent thinking and reflection
as a way to finding the truth about God and the world.
    Qadi Abd al Jabbâr
strongly disapproved of uncritical adherence to the
opinion of another person or to the doctrine of a school. He certainly also applied this to his own disciples and his fellow Mu^tazilites. He shows this attitude at the end of the
Mughni where he invites his fellow Mutazilites to correct the mistakes they may find in the Mughi:
But nevertheless I ask from our fellow [Mutazilites] may God give them success in achieving the good things who study this book, that they correct the incorrectness in it, if it appears and becomes evident, since return to the truth is the way of the faithful (Mugnl XX/2, 257: 12-14).
