    Thank you for answering that. I will rub acetone on it and see what happens to the surface. If it stays sticky, I won’t bother.

    Over 40 years experience doing upholstery and interior repairs too. I don't think cleaning with diluted water base cleaner is a waste of time, especially on used car parts. That will get some contaminants off that solvent won't get off. Then follow up with solvent prep - alcohol works for me, sometimes we use acetone or a mix of alcohol / acetone.
    Acetone is too hot too harsh for a lot of prep work it will damage some vinyls and plastics and leather finishes. But then we use water base or more correctly water borne finishes more than solvent finishes.

    If you're talking painting plastics & vinyl then I agree completely. However I've used isopropyl alcohol for years as a wax and grease remover when painting cars and not one of them has peeled (oldest one is over 20 years old). As long as it's clean, paint on cars relies more on a mechanical bond (at least for the first coat). You definitely need a chemical bond with plastic from either a special chemical or your acetone. Isopropyl alcohol also works well for getting that last thin film of was off your surfboard when changing the wax 🤙🏄‍♂! I always say stick with what you know works for you!

    what about mineral spirits instead of thinner?

    • @oldschoolautoupholstery
      @oldschoolautoupholstery  3 месяца назад +1

      Hello 1, Mineral spirits is great for removing soft glues, but will do nothing to promote adhesion. I'd stick to acetone for that. Please keep liking and watching!

    Question. I have red vinyl chair bodies that attach to a metal frame. I want to remove the chair piece and repaint it.
    Right now they’re really sticky. Do I still prep with acetone? I was wondering if being sticky means they’ve already started to break down so I would have a good sticky surface? I’m a newbie :-)
    I found you and took your advice on which paint to buy. So I have my can of red paint.

      Hello Damion, In the onld days, we used to use Bondo body filler in plastic cracks. I would never try to fill a vinyl crack with anything, it would look bad. I usually just replace the vinyl. Please keep liking and watching!
