Ancient Warcraft Lore - Garona, and Why I'm STILL ANGRY at The Warcraft Movie

  • In the history of the Warcraft Universe, there's been many notable points of controversy, and the Warcraft Movie is one of the biggest of them. Not only should what they did in the Warcraft film be considered blasphemous, but what they did to Garona in it should be looked on as an example of what not to do with character building and development.
    Ancient Warcraft Lore is a RUclips series where we discuss all things old Lore and Story in the World of Warcraft Universe. From the truly dilapidated corners of game manuals and obscure unit statistics to observable and documentable in game lore, this is all about bringing back the glory of ancient lore of Warcraft.
    Ancient Lore is a followup to the long forgotten podcast Ancient of Lore from WoW Radio. Starting back in mid 2005, Ancient of Lore was the first lore and story discussion broadcast on the subject of World of Warcraft. We continue that legacy of critical thinking and analysis here.

    I really liked the movie. Yes, it departs from the source material but it is also a wholly different medium. Duncan Jones is a phenomenal director, and a huge fan of gaming and the Warcraft franchise. Production was troubled, and he’s said it was tough to wrangle all the threads together, but I think he did an admirable job. I think both he and Blizzard envisioned a franchise, and not just a one off so there was incentive to create story threads to be wrapped up later and to offer a more balanced view of both sides. I get why a lot of people didn’t like what was done, but I found it to be a pretty enjoyable experience. Hat being said, great video and excited for your next one.

      Appreciate your thoughts, they very much were envisioning a franchise, I believe, and wanting to set up a lot of the stories from the Warcraft universe.
      That being said, and I address this in the video with some of the very disorganized loose threads and open story questions, for something that was supposed to start a franchise, story wise Jones and Metzen painted themselves into one heck of a corner here. A lot of the story elements that were critical to later parts of the Warcraft Universe were absolutely botched. Overall I'm glad this franchise didn't happen.
      Not to say I'm against people enjoying this film, more power to anyone who does, but honestly as a student of the lore and story of this universe, it still hurts me to this day to see this film exists.

    They should have used more old lore where the Horde attacks hard and fast.
    First in secret in the Black Morass and then hit Moonbroke, Goldshire and Grand Hamlet hard and with no mercy.
    Stormwind would be crushed, leaving Lothar and his survivors to flee north for a part 2 when they rally humans, elfs and dwarfs/gnomes who did not even know what was going on

      @@TheDanNation I know right?
      I mean if they were fighting the Horde for 15 years, then Stormwind would not have been overtaken.
      The northen kingdomes would have sendt enough aid to drive them back to the portal.
      Also, neither Gul'dan nor Cho'gall strike me as people who would just sit and wait.
      Gul'dan wanted to reach what we now call the broken islands as soon as orcishly possible.
      It was just luckey for him that Doomhammer wanted to press up north too

    I feel like the movie was made for the retelling coming they tried with Warlords of Draenor. They wanted to streamline and bring in the shamanistic core earlier to redeem the Orcs from their brutal, "evil" side and giving them the colouring of the noble savage.
    Also, wasn't the movie planned to be in two parts and that's why so much is missing?

    • @TheDanNation
      @TheDanNation  9 месяцев назад +2

      For the first part, the leaning into something similar with Warlords of Draenor coming out at a similar time, you're absolutely right. It's no excuse, IMO, and I judge both VERY harshly, but your chronological analysis is absolutely on point.
      Also as to the multiple movies theories, there were multiple movies planned for after this, but after this one crashed and burned like it did Blizz pulled them. It doesn't explain or excuse why so much content was cut from the first one for me at least, however.

    I do understand the frustration with the film's story not aligning with established canon, but its ultimately flawed since stuff always gets lost in film adaptations. What made the film bad was that the human characters just weren't as compelling as the orcs.

      I do need to push back on these thoughts just a bit, as I feel the actors really were doing the best they could with what they were given, so any character weaknesses should be blamed on the writing and directing. The writing was very poor quality, but to lay that squarely on the human characters and not recognize the myriad of other, more glaring weaknesses I think is unfair. Lothar and Medivh were badly written for sure, but the other human characters I think did fine.

    I actually enjoyed your commentary and could listen to it like a podcast, but having some complimentary visuals would go a long way. Official film stills, concept art would have been nice to see if footage wasn't allowed.
    I do wish you researched more on what happened Behind the Scenes. I remember specifically that Metzen and co. stopped promoting the film late in the film's development upon learning their inputs were more or less ignored, and even Metzen's cameos was cut out.

    Tbh this movie was below par for me personally. Im not a fan when there is heaps of source material aka a series of books that portray the story and can be seried out if they want to do it ie for example LoTR.
    This is also why im not a fan of s
    Marvel / DC movies because they stray from the graphic novels.
    I guess for people who dont like to read it would seem okay.

    My random 2 cents, I think this would be stronger with a thumbnail of who Garona is early on. Reading through fandom pages (ugh), she seems like she's everywhere in the story, but as a player none of this was made very clear.

    • @TheDanNation
      @TheDanNation  11 месяцев назад

      Sure, probably on the thumbnail front, that's fair.
      Yes bigtime on the Garona being everywhere in the story front as well, even if a lot of that is outside of what I consider reasonable scope for this series. They really did her a dis-service in the movie.
