Exactly. Other than Yakupov, the other 1st overalls weren’t busts at all. Look at who were the GMs at the time: Tambellini, McTavish, and Chiarelli. All three GM’s were absolutely terrible. Drafting Yakupov, firing Ralph Krueger on Skype, trading Hall for Larsson, signing Lucic and Koskinen to big number/long term contracts...the list goes on.

I went to Highschool with Yakupov (Northern Highschool Sarnia Ontario) and he was just the most unliked person to the point the other Hockey players didnt even like being around him. 1 time he literally made fun of the special ed kids selling Muffins like who does that.... Karma ended up catching him at least

I went to Northern graduated 1998, I remember the Sting players would have classes and they all looked like full grown men with beards. I don’t know how seriously they took school because they were playing so much hockey with practice and games, they looked exhausted from what I remember. Nail looked like he had quite the ego but I don’t know how you handle that kind of popularity at 17-18.

Bad for high end talent, but surprisingly good for goalies, and some good depth players, which are a lot harder to scout based on how guys play at 18. • @nobuddy2012

I coached a kid like that in Midget Rep. Best skater, stickhandler, and shot on the team. But, he played a different game. I'm not sure what that game was, but it wasn't hockey.
Once we had just scored with less than a minute to go in the game to go ahead 6-5. This kid decided that this was a good time to initiate a fight. We got the instigator, they scored on the power play, and we lost in OT.
His Dad tried to get me replaced as coach because I wouldn't play him the last two minutes of any game after that.
He lasted four games in Juniors. His teammates set fire to his skates in the parking lot. That should tell you something.

If there had been clones of Nail Yakupov, and 4 of them went into a corner for the puck, the opposing defenseman would have still come up with the puck. Extremely light stick. Was a liability on the ice. I’m not sure if it was a lack of effort, or a low hockey IQ, but he just couldn’t play at the NHL level. His first year stats was really inflated with garbage goals when the game never mattered.

I found his situation similar to that of Alexei Yashin from the Ottawa Senators. In that similar realm (but not as bad) was Alexander Mogilny.
I remember there was a lot of hype surrounding Mogilny in Vancouver. He seemed to have really found his stride and then signed a large contract. Once that contract was signed though, he changed overnight. He no longer put in the effort to chase down pucks and absolutely refused any sort of battle along the boards for a loose puck. In his mind, he was going to get paid regardless, so why bother working hard? Some people will claim that’s “typical Russian” work ethic; not me though. I also remember Pavel Bure was like a pitbull in puck battles and he didn’t care how big or tough the other guy was either.

1:43 Is he really the worst 1st-overall pick in NHL history? I think he's definitely top 10 worst...but back in the '60s there were some bad bad picks. At least 2 or 3 drafts, the 1st-overall pick never played a single NHL game! Yakupov played over 300 NHL games. Or what about goalie Rick DiPietro - he never justified being selected 1st overall with his play. So...at the very most, Yakupov is the 5th-worst 1st-overall selection...and even that is debatable.
