UPDATE March 3, 2019: Neon is back on the road! It WAS an internal transmission fault; owner got it fixed at a Chrysler transmission specialist for $500. Long live the NEON!
I’ve rebuilt a couple of 4l60e transmissions and rebuilding automatic transmissions really isn’t near as bad as people make them out to be. The first one I rebuilt was in my 97 Camaro and it’s still shifting perfectly to this day. The only thing that keeps me from rebuilding other transmissions are the different special tools needed like spring compressors, bushing removers/installers, and different size Teflon ring installers. I have everything I need to do the 4l60e but only because I needed to rebuild my own. It was actually a pretty fun learning experience and felt good when i put it back together and it works as it’s supposed to. With the 4l60 being such a popular transmission it’s good to know how.
Vince Scalise no. I did it over the weekend so I wasn’t in a rush. There is also a great series on rebuilding the 4l60 on RUclips that is VERY detailed. Just make sure to have the tools to compress the two spring cages beforehand as well as the tools to install and resize the Teflon seals on the input shaft.
ruclips.net/video/SK84Qy_Vu_E/видео.html that’s the link to the first part and he has a link to a website in the description where you can buy a complete rebuild kit. I purchased my own parts separately at other places for a performance rebuild.
Ivan, your videos have evolved! You have what I consider the best and most interesting content in your niche/shandra. The case studies are always interesting, and you explain your thought process very well. I look forward to watching whenever a new video comes out. You probably don't get the volume of views as some of the others because your content is next level stuff.
Sorry Ivan about name business. I had just watched Eric. Both he and you are auto pros You even ran the rabbit down on the Carrier's heat pump. Wiring diagrams always challenge me but you make them more doable. Thanks
I have a 99 Plymouth Neon with 55K on the clock, bought it from my neighbor for $400....has a 3 speed non-electrical trans and had to change the reverse clutches...car came from NJ and sat in a barn for a long time and then in my neighbors driveway for a couple of years.
Interesting and informative diagnosis. There is a you tuber called "The Transmission Bench" that goes into detailed step by step transmission rebuilding for several types. He even shows how to make the special tools required. If someone is considers a rebuild and he has done your model I'd recommend watching his videos.
Eric, THE MAN is Hiram Gutierrez. His channel is Automatic Transmissions. This dude has forgotten more about transmissions than 90% of the people working on them will ever know.
In the back end is the clutch piston housing that's bolted in and the gasket likes to blow out. U can remove the valve body make sure it's in manual low then you can air check the clutch with about 40 to 60 psi of air and listen for it leaking but by now the clutch is burnt and will need an over haul I cant tell you how many I've had apart good video accurate diagnosis
I am waiting for the Silhouette video. I had a 91 that I would still have except for it getting totaled while parked in my driveway. I loved my dustbuster!
I like troubleshooting too. And your bonus footage. I was thinking about overhauling it myself, watched plenty of online vids on its. Fluke design with snap rings breaking prior to 99 i guess. But mine shifts fine up until overdrive. Just got that moan to it and drag feel like limp mode. Good lookin out brother. Your a god send i think. 2 videos and already have a better perspective. God bless
Ivan, the solenoids actuate valves that redirect fluid through a gallery to actuate pistons to engage the clutches. Generally, as an auto box wears it fails progressively and across all gears. Your situation is specific to one gear and the effect was sudden. Dropping the gearbox bottom cover and transmission fluid filter off might show fragments (actuator piston retaining cir-clip?) blocking the fluid gallery and preventing valve function. It is best to physically check something this simple with the gearbox still in the car before committing to a full strip down or replacement.
I built a lot of the early transmissions until the 604 came out. Left these alone. Labor times are low, you get 2 hours to pull axles, lol. Solenoid pacs expensive. Not worth the costs, throw away car. Good diagnosis road map, thanks.
InsideOfMyOwnMind after all that typing I realize the dudes got a 4 speed not the little 3 speed and everything I said about replacing one is wrong. Not worth it. Junk it.
As the filling parameters were OK and the failure was sudden it will not be a worn out clutch. The diagnosis is not complete until the shift solinoid has been removed and tested. Many cars have solinoid problems these days. There probably is a way of testing the clutch with compressed air.
Looks like you might get another car for your collection as it’s not worth a rebuild. If you have the time automatic transmissions are fun to work on. Good video material.
On the road again, cheaper than junking it and buying a beater, interesting you me because I have that model transmission, well it like the caravan you in had in a few weeks back they are kinda everywhere, might have been the transmission solonoid pac those are a pretty popular failure item from what I have just learned from a couple of YT videos I just watched. Anyway that's good news 😊
I'm not entirely sure if it's a related cause or symptom, but at 11:57 the 2-4 solenoid went to closed, then re-opened for a moment before closing again. Almost like it wasn't sure whether to shift to second or not.
I know the signs don’t point to it, but I wonder how much it would cost and how hard it would be to replace that solenoid. I’ve had other cars (Ford) that lose the OD solenoid but throw no codes for it. It was a 30 minute job to replace it, and that included dropping the pan and replacing the fluid and filter.
Was looking through the comments to see if someone knew a cheap fix, but doesn’t look like it. Well, at least it has the manners to get to the junkyard under its own power.
Ivan you would be a great motor man on a drilling rig ever thought about it? I doubt it’s like the black gold tv show. Well at least it’s not like that up in Canada.
Nice diagnosis though a transmission cost more than the car is worth. Really only 3hrs to R&R that transmission seems a little short? I can't believe there's still neon's over where you're at I haven't seen one here in about 4 yrs or so.
Nice one Ivan. Could you do a whiteboard walktrough sometime describing an Auto trans? Would be great. When you looked at the input and output rpm, that was the converter values right? Or am I mistaking? The second clutch was not able to hold the shaft to the second gear? Thx.
It is very likely The Sun Gear broke away or the upper planetary is stripped out. Very common. The two four clutches rarely go bad. No transmission Rebuilder will open this transmission just to replace those parts because he will definitely be marrying it.
That's why I drive Fords. They are built tough. With one exception, the Focus. Those transmissions are Junk. But my new 2019 ecosport AWD is awesome. Finally no more FWD especially in those Minnesota winters.
These 40te transmissions are very sensitive to fluid level and type. You must run ATF+4. Dexron/Mercon will cause clutch failure. Running low on fluid will damage the solenoid packs. Many Chrysler A604/41te/40te have died due to use of the wrong fluid. I have a feeling this one is toast.
Damn, I thought for sure there would have been BONUS VIDEO in which the trans was FIXED. All it need to a couple of HARD Shift to dislodge some crap in the trans.

$1,800 for a basic rebuild as long as the hard parts are intact maybe a few snap rings. But if the pump is shot along with other hard parts get another car.
Could somebody please explain the input and out put rpm slip. When he is in second gear and not moving it shows input rpm and in any other gear no input rpm when not moving. Could anyone describe the theory behind that please. Thank you
The input RPM represents the speed that the torque converter is spinning the input shaft of the transmission. When stopped, the torque converter wants to turn the input shaft, but it can't because an internal clutch or band is applied, which locks the input shaft to the output shaft, which in turn is connected to the wheels, which can't turn. However, in this case, the 2nd clutch is slipping so badly that the torque converter can turn the input shaft and slip the clutch even when the car is stationary. So, in conclusion, zero input RPM when stationary is good, and any input RPM when stationary indicates a problem. I hope this makes sense.
Me: Ivan my Neon wont shift or go over 10mph. Ivan: Bring it over I'll be happy to diagnose it for you. Me: ( after diagnosis) hey Ivan what did you find ? Lose 2nd gear and the system defaults to limp home mode... AKA 2nd year only! Gotta love it! 😂
Sounds like drop the second gear clutch pack or the band is stretched
Most transmissions use a band for 2 nd gear. Don't know about this one.
Cooll Asice actually most transmissions don’t use bands any more. This transmission has no bands.
Get a Remanufactured Transmission from Rock Auto or a good salvage yard transmission. All depends how much money they want to invest in an old car...
Open it up!
Joseph Wash thank you for the great explanation. That helps alot

Don't think so. The owner brought it directly here once the problem occurred.
Maybe the cheapest way to go is go to a junkyard & find a trans. I'm sure junkyards are full of Dodges.
Damn dodge valve packs made me walk multiple times, under 30k and 8k.....never a dodge van again.
