Thanks to all airborne, past, present and future! What you have volunteered for is totally awesome and beyond what most of us could even imagine doing! You are a VERY SPECIAL band of warriors, ready to go above ( literally) and beyond for the safety of our country and the rest of us who are afraid to do what you have accomplished! I remember the newsreels during WWII of the sky filled with parachutes, and being amazed at the bravery and strength of those brave men! STILL DO!
The crazy thing is that i did not realize the importance of airborne, how cool it was, how much it sucked at the same time, and how crazy I was for doing it and loving it, until I was out of the Army.
Blood wings at graduation 45th company August 1972. Then on to the 1st 505th 82nd Ft. Bragg. Hard to believe that was almost 47 years ago. Seems like yesterday. All the way! Follow the Airborne.
Very fancy!! I graduated Jump School on 12/1967 with 1200 other grads, all male, a few Mexican officers, and some Navy sailors, in a very simple ceremony. Everybody lived in old WWII barracks. The cadre had a mule who had completed jump school, they said, "If that jackass can get his wings, you can get them." Two Army men had died in our class by getting tangled shroud lines on the second or third jumps. No blood wings.
The craziest story I've know about USMC troopers is that during the WWII they decided they didn't like the silver Army jump wings they are supposed to wear and started wearing the gold Navy Certified Parachute Rigger wings because they liked the look of them better. In the late 60s, and after two decades of wearing the Rigger wings on their uniform out of regs the CO of Force Recon sent a request to the CNO asking to officially make the Navy Parachute Rigger wings the jump wings for both Navy and Marines. Because the reg violation was so common place and unchecked it was approved without the qualification of having to be an actual Parachute Rigger. Strangely, PRs today are not allowed to wear their Rigger wings after Navy Parachute Rigger school. They have to attend the Army jump school and then they can wear their wings, yet 5 jump chumps can wear them without attending Parachute Riggers school, which sounds about as ass backwards as possible. Only in the backwards lifestyle of the military does shit like that happen. What's next? SEAL Tridents for every Marine that is sharpshooter qualified? Who knows, but the story of the Parachute Rigger wings is one that I always thought was almost an act of Stolen Valor covered up by military politics and ass kissing. Ya know, at least the Army isn't ashamed of their jump wings and proudly wear them with honor.
I always wondered about the gold wings the Navy and Marines wear, so I asked about the qualifications and was told that as part of the qualification the had to attend and pass Jump Master's school.
Wow! The feeling never leaves! Blood wings 85' I was part of an airborne package platoon something that had not been done before. We met at the MEPS station and went through basic, AIT and airborne school together. We caught hell from day 1 from legs and definitely airborne ranger's alike because they placed everything but wings on our uniforms at the MEPS station. Stationed at Tank Hill, the old WWII barracks at Ft. Jackson S.C. we definitely pushed up that base. We were so crazy, we talked our basic training D.S. into going to airborne...he did and we talked our AIT D.S. into going to airborne and he got smoked right along with the rest of us. Whenever one of our platoon mates had to do pushups we all had to do pushup so when we got to airborne school it was automatic that whenever the BLACK HATS made one of our guys do pushups all 50 of us dropped down and started banging them out. The BLACK HATS didn't know what to make of this. Within at week I believe everyone Soldier in our entire stick dropped and started banging them out. Officer's and Enlisted alike loved seeing their fellow comrades down for each other. I was 17 years old and I never forget that experience. I noticed Soldier's now to pushups on pads in the saw dust pit...yeah right! I hate saw dust til this day!
I don't remember even having a graduation. Whatever happened to the dignity of being all business and not looking to have ceremonies for every accomplishment?
Jon Slotten basically getting your wings (minus butterflies or damnits or whatever you want to call them) pushed into your chest to where it causes bleeding.
Been there....done that.....sign me a retired Canadian Army Parachute Rigger officer......my very best and sincere wishes for safety and success in future airborne and special operations.
+reddevilparatrooper Wow! Congrats. My dad may have been your Airborne Battalion commander. (L. Scott). I'm working on a project and found this video. Brings back great memories. I love that you got Blood Wings!
All I remember back in '69, a black hat E6 in fatigues pinning my wings 😎 I mumbled a thank you and even had a tear in my eye😥 30 days leave 😃 then off to $15 overseas pay,$55 combat pay, and another $55 jumpless pay🤪🤑😃
RICHARD ... BLOOD WINGS ARE AFTER GRADUATION FROM JUMP SCHOOL ONE RECEIVES THE METAL SILVER WINGS.. SOME GUYS TOOK OFF THE BRASS POST COVERS EXPOSING THE TWO POINTED POSTS. THE WINGS ARE PUT UP AGAINST THE SKIN WHERE THEY WOULD NORMALLY GO AND THEN SOMEONE POUNDS THE WINGS IN THE THE CHEST CAUSING THE POSTS TO PIERCE THE FLESH AND DRIPPING BLOOD FROM THE TWO WOUNDS. WE WERE INSTRUCTED NOT TO DO SO AND THAT IT WAS A ARTICLE 15 ( A MINOR CHARGE) FOR DAMAGING GOVERNMENT PROPERTY. I DID NOT DO IT BECAUSE IT WAS POINTLESSLY PAINFUL.
henochparks, in spring of 1982 we received our Blood wings right after our fifth jump in the assembly area before heading back to Benning on busses (No choice... Lol) It only added to the experience ... if given the choice, I would NOT have changed it, AIRBORNE!
I attended jump school in summer 1996 after my junior year at Norwich. Summer training is usually full of ‘cadi-diots’ (short for cadet idiots). The black hats picked on us a lot. Great times. Great times.
@@waynegradert8439 I'm not aware of any additional airborne school in the US military other than the United States Army Airborne School at Fort Benning, Georgia. If I remember correctly, the jump school at benning is the only airborne school, and conduct airborne training for the entire US military.
1979 I remember it well. Then I went to the 2nd/75th Ranger Battalion Ft. Lewis. Then to Charle Airborne in Alaska and then to B Co. 2nd/504th Parachute Infantry Regiment 82nd Airborne Division Ft Bragg N.C. I got injured and had Syadica in my neck and lower back with Degeneritve Disk Desiese. Heath problems took me off jump status. So I got out for medical reasons after 12 years active duty. Then I joined the Arkansas National Guard and got my 20 Year Letter and retired with 11 years in the National Guard. Total years served 23. I'll be 60 in October and I'll get my retirement in full. I still miss my Airborn Days. Best time I ever had serving my Great Country the United States of America. Airborne. God bless America 🇺🇸🇺🇸🇺🇸. Trump 2020.
Been awhile since I have heard that most ubiquitous word of my brief and bit of nothingness life as a draftee. Going Airborne did keep me in CONUS in the "strack" 82nd getting jump pay to help keep my car payment up.... all's well that ends well... yeah, strack... breaking starch everyday to go out and get dirty. (Some of the best times of my youth, now fifty years ago) Go Airborne, all the way!
How cool, these kids are so young. I was with the 45th Airborne Training Brigade back in Nov 1984, before head to the 1/75th.

Sure as hell wasn't like that 40 years ago when i went through it.
My graduation was NOT like this. It was a few kind words and my mother filming the sergeant airborne pinning me. That's it. nothing special.
I think that's cool man. There are a lot of people wanting those wings.
Mine either. We got our Blood Wings on the drop zone. '86
@@vinylhanger604 Same, received mine on Fryer DZ by jump committee Black Hats. The same for my dad. I did get to put my kid's wings on though.
I don't remember even having a graduation. Whatever happened to the dignity of being all business and not looking to have ceremonies for every accomplishment?
I just noticed Ungowa looming in the background...

It’s a lot kindler and gentler Army now. Very different in the early 90s and can’t even imagine what it was like in the 60s.
My shirt was a little bloodier than theirs at the end of my graduation😑😑

I asked on another one of these when jump school companies went from numbers to letters ?
I attended jump school in summer 1996 after my junior year at Norwich. Summer training is usually full of ‘cadi-diots’ (short for cadet idiots). The black hats picked on us a lot. Great times. Great times.
I think we need more airborne schools instead of just 1
What happened to jump school at Ft Bragg? I went through it in 1955
