Hiking with a Novice I Taking a German Friend up Mt. Iwate

- Mt. Iwate is the 3rd highest mountain in the Tohoku region and perhaps my favorite. Of course the close proximity to Morioka makes it the mountain that I climb most. My friend Micha from Germany asked to come with me, so we went up a couple months ago (and I finally made the video). We took the Nanataki Trail up, and the Yakehashiri Trail down, made possible by 2 vehicles. It was not the best choice for a first-time hiker, but he made it!

Thank you for taking me! Look at my face haha, it really does look like I suffered. But I had great fun, let's go again sometime!
Ditch the blue jeans next time and wear some thin, light weight and loose nylon mountain pants. They're more comfy and do not retain sweat/water/rain. For colder months bring a thin base layer that you can put on underneath the pants. You have a great friend in Quinlan!
Japan has electrolyte drink tablets/powders you can mix right in your water bottle instead of buying bottled drinks so take advantage of those for your water bottles along your hike. Also refuel with a banana or two when you get back down to replenish your muscles and ease soreness.
Looked like you did fantastic for a first hike, especially one that challenging!
@@deanzaZZR Thank you! Even though we planned to go for a while, this particular hike was kinda on short notice. We talked about what pants to wear and decided to go with whatever is most comfortable to walk in. I tried some other pants but these jeans were stretchy enough to be comfortable to walk in. It was a good decision, as i didn't feel uncomfortable even for a minute with them. Now I do understand that other gear is better though. I just didn't have the option at the time. I want to gear up a bit for next time!
@@Just1Nora Thank you! I had another water bottle in my backpack and I got some Aquarius after we finished. All in all Quinlan's instructions on what to bring were pretty good, but there's always room for improvement!
You should totally start a hiking guide business 😍
I'm sort of going in that direction actually. Just did my first paid hiking gig a few days ago!
Nice to hear that there's the opportunity for a guided tour with the Iwate expert.
I would definitely be interested when I get the chance to come to Japan again😊
The quality of your videos are amazing. Your videos always give me a sense of serenity; can't even imagine what it's like when you're actually there on the trails. Keep up the great work!
"You're not gonna die though" LOL I mean, death IS only the worst thing that can happen, right? Love your videos, absolutely beautiful
It's crazy how green and lush it is! Nanataki Falls look so beautiful with the autumn colors. Gorgeous shots as always Quinlan and can't wait for the next video. Be well!
Thanks!
Greetings from Germany :)
4:53 famous line when hiking with Quinlan ......
haha that Dragon Quest pun..... it killed me hihihihi also you look so happy when you are the top of the mountain, like a kid's, pure joy :)
Glad someone got it!
When I saw the trail map and you said how long the hike was going to be (~18 km right?) in my head I was like, "Oh nooo...not for a first hike Quinlan!" LOL But he came through it like a champ.
Merch idea: T-shirt showing course map and "You're not gonna die" XD
These places look amazing because there are not too many people to ruin the beauty of nature. The drone shots are breathtaking. Great video man. :D
Oh I love a good challenge. My greatest one to date was riding the Shimanami Kaido. It took two days but I was proud. I don’t even own a bike here in Australia.
That bug going across the screen
As always breathtaking views and top notch drone footage :) Also kudos to Micha!
Thanks. I didn't die. ;)
Thank you for new video (and Sankayo flower)!!
I wanna go to climb Mt.Iwate some day!
So peaceful and green! Definitely still a dream to hike those beautiful trails one day :)
A tough course for a first hike. I find downhill harder. We use muscles not normally used.
Going down after going up was definitely difficult especially with all the lava rocks scattered through the forest poking at my blisters.
the rope part looks pretty fun! Thanks for sharing
I have only seen Mt Iwate from afar. Kudos to your friend for reaching to the summit! The nature is so beautiful there! It feels like hobbits will appear suddenly. And you know you have been too adventurous, bringing a beginner to through that route hahaha! You better feed him with few pints of good craft beers. I think he will appreciate it.
Man, that was stunning! Also ~19km? Pretty hardcore for a first time hahaha Thanks for sharing
Ah! What a place! I want to be there one day! And I love the drone footage, wow ☺️✨
So beautiful and green! It would be amazing to take that hike and definitely worth the challenge.
I'm really enjoying the content you bring to us. It's also great to see how far you've come from your first video to present day. A great story teller and always a wealth of knowledge :)
Thanks so much for watching!! And thanks for watching the earlier stuff... it's rough but I think the locations are still beautiful! I'm trying to keep learning. Going to try to new things soon...
You so love challenging people. He was a great sport about it! Wonderful hike as usual!
“You’re not going to die though.” 🤣
@@kristindelacruz8484 I'll remember that when I lie in the ditch all messed up. Hahah
Ooof. My feet would have been bleeding if that was my first hike in a long time. Good job for finishing the hike and I hope he was not too sore or tender footed the next day. Love the video.
Oh I'm not gonna lie I was sore for days. I couldn't even sit down without pain cause for some reason some muscles in my butt actually hurt. The blisters weren't as bad as I thought though. Walking up and down stairs at work was hell. Oh and he forgot to mention in the video that they decided to casually run for like the last kilometer. Haha.
Very good video!
Thank you for those drone shots of the mountain and the virtual breath of fresh air! Waiting here in Oregon for fresh air to return. What a treat to hike with you.
Thank you so much for these videos Quinlan! They are really inspiring me to go hiking (in Germany atm) and quench my thirst for the Japanese mountains. Hope to be able to meet you on the trails one day :)!
Thanks! And absolutely!
Every time I see your video
I understand our ancestors saw spirits of eight million gods on top of the mountain and even those rocks trees
Please take care of yourself and send us more good pictures

Or me! But I don't live in Japan, so this might involve more organisation :)
beat you guys to that gheheheh
That was an insanely gorgeous hike 🥰
That was a fun perspective, Quinlan! The videography is superb and the drone shots are just spectacular. I had a question about display maps on information boards in general. It often seems that there is no compass rose on them to tell you where North is, and the orientation of the maps aren't uniform. Are the maps oriented with respect to where the person is standing? I look at some videos and the maps they show (not just on your channel) and try to figure out on Street View where people are and I can't always figure it out. Your feedback on this conundrum would be most appreciated. Cheers and thanks for your marvelous videos!
The map in the beginning of this video did have a subtle arrow just barely in frame that pointed north, and it was going straight up. I'm not sure off the top of my head how most are. I'll pay attention from now on!
another solid episode and great new idea for it aswell dude!
Beautiful hike! Congrats to your friend for making it up! 🏞️
Thanks. I survived. It was awesome.
I'm happy that he did it up to the summit, take care always
7:24 aaaahhh! Was that a dragon flying by or a dragon fly?
I'd forgotten where Nanataki was exactly, and so I didn't realise which summit you were taking Michael up to, and until just before the summit I kept thinking, this looks like a great beginner hike! What's the worry? 😆
The hardest part was up the rim there through the forest after the Hanabatake. That was such a steep and tough climb. It made my legs so tired I had to stop every two minutes on the way up the summit.
I was surprised that there are still unwalked trails at mt Iwate for you. 😄 but this one is also really beautiful. Thanks again for sharing with us 😊
No longer any unwalked trails on Mt. Iwate since I covered that last little bit!
Another great video, the drone shots are fantastic.
Okay you absolutely did take a novice up, way ahead of my suggestion
Dude i love your Videos. Keep up the great work :)
Looks like northern New England :)
Ar least at first...
Do you provide organized hiking service? Would love to go with you as the guide!!
I'm slowly starting to set that up! But even now I take individual requests and have done a couple of paid hiking gigs lately!
Great video Quinlan. How many times is it you've reached the summit this year?
My current count for 2020 is 11 summits of Mt. Iwate!
That would be me if I ever went hiking with you 😂 Do you recommend any hikes closer to say.... 8km?
Yes! There are several! In particular, Mt. Mitsuishi is short and not so difficult!
@@GoNorthJapan Awesome! I hope to check it out soon 😁
👍
Hiking in Denim Jeans first rookie mistake Micha OOHH the Chafe you must of had
The jeans were fine. They were really stretchy and not those kind of rigid types. Though I'd obviously had liked other pants, it was probably a good choice among the things I had available. No chafing or anything because of the jeans. The socks however......
The views are so superb in this video but I especially love 5:28 for some reason.
Hi there German fellow hiker! :D
Have you ever considered hiking Japan alps?
I'd love to, but it won't be casual as I'll have to travel across the country, pay for lodging or bring tons of camping gear, etc. Someday!
@@GoNorthJapan It'll be worth it! Perhaps my favourite trip in Japan was Kita Alps, Tateyama to Kamikochi, with a tent. Let me know if you are interested in details. I remember the whole week vividly, even it was some 16 years ago. Minami Alps is more challenging apparently, being more remote with bigger ups and downs between mountains.
Quick question - what video editing software do you use? Thx.
I use Adobe Premiere Pro... thought I know at this point I'm still just scratching the surface in terms of what it can do.
GoNorth Japan thx! :)
