      @@Quackalope I think this is a prime example of why your channel died. I remember watching your videos along with BoardgameCo and you had a much entertaining personality. However, after the fallout, you could have honestly ridden it out, if you just had taken a step back. But instead, all the videos you made addressing the channel issues just made the channel worse and worse. Your reactions in all honesty came across a bit narcistic and insincere. Go back and read all the comments saying those exact two things. The fallout knocked you down, but you dug your own grave by how you made the situation worse and destroyed the brand and good loyalty. You might not realize it now how you came across but in 10-15 years when you look back you would probably see you could have definitely survived if you had handled things much differently. Cheers

    Jesse I still love you my man but I'm not sure running this channel isn't ruining your enjoyment of the hobby and games in general. If stable income is a concern, I suggest you get a regular job and turn this channel into something that really complements your enjoyment of the hobby. I think it really does not have to be more than that. Play games, love games and share your love with us at the rate that is compatible with your life. Those die hard friends and fans will stick around but the pressure to make this channel something, grow and have it be a source of income is perhaps not what you should be pursuing? Whatever you chose to do good luck and most importantly I hope you enjoy it!

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope  Месяц назад +8

      Hey! You are correct in some ways and wrong in others! I know with how Quick this comment was posted you have not watched the full video yet (I do get into this topic in the update)
      Running this channel and making content is a full time job. 100+ hours a week for 5 years. Even now, learning, playing, filming, editing, posting, and keeping up to date is 40+ hours a week for just a few videos. If I want to keep the channel going and the quality high - it has to provide income in some form. This time last year Quackalope had 4 full time employees and was brining in around 15k a month in consistent income. Instead of saving that money - I was investing in growing the team, brining in guests, and expanding our filming space. With the ATO drama 11 months ago and the lies spread across the internet we lost a lot. Compounding the initial loss of clients the last 8 months have been a growing and learning process for me. Leading to the ADHD diagnosis 3 months ago. I am doin well - but I have been unable to stabilize and keep the channel going on my own. At the moment Quackalope's only stable income is RUclips and Patreon ($800). We often get a contract or two a month on top of that at around $500-800 each. So, we make something - but it can't keep us afloat at the moment.
      I am looking for work outside of the channel. The big question is - what will that mean for my time and my ability to create content. We don't know yet. Each video takes an average of 6-8 hours of production time - not including learning and playing before filming.
      Finally, I am making changes to the content we make in a effort to move forward. I want to enjoy the channel, have fun filming, and re-build the community. So, we are moving away from crowdfunding. Going deep on a limited number of titles. Selling piles of games and KDM upgrades to hopefully buy us some time to adjust.
      Your judgment is correct. The question is more - is running the channel that way sustainable.

    As someone in a similar boat - I absolutely recommend treating this more as a hobby and less of a job. Focus on work outside of RUclips - and come here when you WANT to. It'll lead to a more satisfying process. If that means deep dives, or focusing on the games that you LOVE - then so be it! I cover lots of games, but I focus on games like Star Wars Armada with a very heavy emphasis because content like that makes me happy. And I'm always adjusting too - don't ever be afraid to shake things up! Stay strong and when you DO make content - make it great! You've always had incredible production quality - keep that up when you can!

      The cost of time is the big question. If I made nothing from the channel- I could not keep it going. I just don't have the wealth needed to survive a month - let alone years without solid stable income for myself and my family.

  • @Cergorach
    @Cergorach 29 дней назад +7

    I'll say that the direction the content went in was not to my liking, that doesn't have to be a 'you' problem, tastes differ. BUT... There has been way, way too much drama which hurt the channel (and all the people involved). One thing you mentioned is the 'car salesman' thing and that is for me an 'ah-ha!' moment. There was a time where you sold me on your enthusiasm for a game and at some point it felt like you tried to sell me on a game, the next new thing or kickstarter. I think that has to do with a transformation from something you did as a hobby to something you did for money (aka. business).
    I think we need to recognize that during the last 4 years we had more time to do things then we normally did (lockdowns), I've been seeing more and more people keep doing the stuff they did during the pandemic AND try to do everything they did before the pandemic. Most of us don't have the time and/or the mental/emotional bandwidth to do everything. We need to make choices, we need to set priorities. The last few years were a mess that borked our choices and priorities...
    I think you can make awesome content! But I think doing it as a business isn't the best thing for either you or your viewers. Making your hobby your work is a really bad choice for many of us! After having run almost a decade a webstore for pnp rpg games as a side business, I realized, I never ever want to run that as the main/fulltime business. It doesn't pay well, it's frustrating like heck, is very risky, and takes up oodles of time you could be spending better.
    My advise: Get a well paying main job and do this as a hobby and treat it like a hobby. Don't follow the views, do videos about things you're passionate about and don't do videos when you don't feel like it. Well paying main job: I've seen some very well paid photographers/videographers, so maybe develop further in there. Might also be compatible with the ADHD, I've seen that an office job often doesn't work well with people that have ADHD, I've threatened to duct tape people to their office chair... ;) A well paying job (hours vs money) could mean you could spend less time working and more time doing the things you like, with the people you care about.

    I have a friend who got massive debt from studio equipment. Sounds like your credit card debt is at LEAST $25,000-30,000 given the specifics you mentioned about "being eaten alive by interest rates". My favorite videos are the ones where you talk about things/topics/games that you're genuinely excited about, or things that you feel are important to talk about, rather than the videos that are there because a check is being sent. I have to feel like long term, the former will build better and stronger community (and hopefully grows more financially alongside), even though shorter term it won't generate as much. That said, I totally get that paying the bills is mission critical, and it's important to find the right balance. I'm really excited about seeing more deep dives and in depth series around games that you enjoy, even if the games aren't the new kickstarters or the new hotness, and I imagine others are as well. New games may get eyeballs, but it's short lived, while evergreen games (and content around them) will continue to draw interest from board gamers forever. Just an idea off the top of my head, as far as I can tell, there are no big name content creators that make serious content around board game strategy. Those are the kinds of videos I would binge watch if it was about games I was already interested in and wanting to get better at.

There would be so much to say about it, and thinks that can't be just written in some social media comment, lacking tone, silences, rephrasing, ... at the end of the day it's like being round and trying, again and again, every minute of every day, to find a way to, at last, fit into a square world, often without even understanding why it's not working, and getting exhausted and depressed by the process. Maybe I'm all wrong here. But I can relate to your words, your state of mind (at least the one you're exposing). I wish you all the best.

One of the things that changed for me is the chase for something to give me enough dopamine to feel it. Buying and playing board games was one of those things and without that need my consumption of games and channels like yours have decreased dramatically. Been with the channel this the beginning on and off.
    I feel like you are putting off the inevitable, I’m not here to put you down but at the minute I think the focus is in the wrong place.
    You said yourself you are “soul” searching and trying to find a balance. You have accumulated debt, investing into the channel trying to recreate the spark which was lost from the drama.
    15k a month is an extreme amount to lose and trying to pump more time and effort into a channel which isn’t providing the outcome will just put more of a strain on you and your family.
    I myself decided to change career 5 years ago, doing so I created a large amount of debt. I have board games stacked unplayed but my focus now is to stabilise my financial situation. I’m lucky my new career pays very well so there is a light at the end of the tunnel, but without this focus you are only treading water.

      I suspect if you want to get back to 180k a year again, you either need to be (very) patient during growth or you might need to rebrand. I value your opinion personally and think you produce the highest quality content, but it is hard to ignore that your current brand is damaged.
      I think in the short term, you may want to consider doing local video production and editing or video advertisements. You have very strong talent in visual design and I think that is an area in which you could capture the fastest revenue. You may also want to consider putting yourself on fiver or reach out to offer to edit videos for other youtubers. Being in the dc area, it may even be possible for you to get work in political promotion/campaign videos.
      Whatever you wind up doing I sincerely wish you and your family the greatest success.

I hope you find the peace and balance you need to be able to continue balancing mental health, family, and hobby all in one. I'm also an orthodox Jew (raised as one) and can definitely emphathize on how big of a life transition that can be. Just navigating the new schedules of Shabbat and holidays must be very difficult while trying to maintain a channel with higher quality production value.

      Hey! Thanks so much for the comment (If you ever come through Cleavland let us know - I would love to have you for Shabbat). Judaism is the most important, defining element of my life - and at the same time probably the most challenging to keep well. I love Shabbat, I love the holidays, and I love the community. The daily routine of prayer, learning, sleep, and growth however - is challenging. With my newly understood ADHD, I have really been struggling to build habits that let me keep Orthodoxy. I am getting there - but I still have a lot of work to do. Every one of those habits (like getting up in the morning to Daven) takes a lot of my mental and even physical energy.
      G-d willing I will keep growing and finding my way forward. Even, if at times, I feel totally incapable & overwhelmed.

    You're doing the right thing Jesse, being there and providing for your family.
    Take a steady side job that creates a stable financial situation, and take a step back from the RUclips "hobby". I personally would love you to do a few deep, detailed and high quality video's about Kingdom Death a month. Honestly, I think that would set you apart from all the other boardgames channels that basically cover the same things. I'd even get a Patreon sub for it....
    Would it give you less viewers? Yes, most likely. But you're not completely making a living out it anymore so it doesn't really matter. Besides that, you can still do the things you like most, which is having more time with the family, producing and playing KDM.
    Best of luck man! Don't be to hard on yourself.

      Eventually, in a year or so if I can’t find a balance I might have to adjust even more.

    I think the concern from a viewer perspective is the trustworthiness. When a board game channel goes from reviewing from a customer perspective to reviewing from a business perspective, its tough to trust what you say. We've seen what appears to be the industry agreements regarding paid content. And its always to make the game look and sound amazing. Heck, the ones I've seen specifically prevent any negative views, criticism or even comparing the game to others similar games. Ones you lose your audience's trust, its over because now you are not looking out for the consumer, your in bed with the industry. I get it from a content creators view, I really do. The money the companies pay for sponsored content is huge. But we, the RUclips audience, don't care about that. We want 100% honest and critical reviews. I made a similar comment on Board Game Co's channel the other day. He's the company now and I stopped watching his videos months ago. Good luck Jessie! You seen like a good dude, but as long as you're tied to the companies, we will simply go somewhere else for content because you're no longer one of us. God bless!

    You're gonna get every possible permutation of advice from a video like this, but thanks for sharing and I wish you and your family the best! I think one of the reasons you gravitate towards KD:M is that you're a very emotionally-motivated person, and when you see passion projects you get excited and connect. If so, I can relate - though unfortunately in my experience this passion provides only illusory benefits when trying to establish a sustainable, lucrative profession. The people who can pay you are usually looking for a reliable, low-risk transaction, not an unreliable superfan. The alternative is having a big audience, but i don't think that's healthy for any person, let alone someone who is tempted to read every comment. All those observations aside though, at the end of the day you do whatever you want to do - the world has a way of helping you course correct, and your prior experiences will somehow be useful whether the channel grows back to sustainable business size or you end up focusing on other things. I see nothing worth admonishment in your plans and think you're making some quality decisions. Good luck!

    • @Quackalope
      @Quackalope  Месяц назад +1

      The hard part will be not following any of it XD
      I think your reading of myself and the situation is accurate. I am driven by relationship and passion over any other force. For instance. I actually cared about a notable publisher I worked closely with . . . went out of my way to make unique content for free, hosted them in my house, and loved diving into their new games. The relationship came first.
      Since the ATO drama . . . they made a "business choice" and have never once messaged or reached out to me. Even worse . . . they have visited my city multipole times to film with others. The "we can't hire for a bit you due to drama" is a conversation I am fine with . . . the empty, vapid, silence from people in the community I invested in and still care for. Hurts. It was and never will be about the money for me. Money just let's me invest in those around me and spend more of my time learning and growing.

    • @MrKogarou
      @MrKogarou Месяц назад +1

      @@Quackalope It does suck to lose connection with prior work colleagues when you put so much emotional energy into your work! It's a big bummer and I'm still working through a couple similar situations. Things tend to work best when we find new relationships to be excited about (and eventually, some of the old relationships will re-activate), but it can take more time than we'd like... You've done a great job with your work in the past, and this reset is in large part caused by factors out of your control, but it'll also open you up to cool new things. There are very few people who go through their professional careers without a few "hard restarts". Even though you currently get silence from people you used to be in close contact with, it doesn't invalidate your previous experiences, and it won't prevent you from trying to contact them when you feel the time is right. People remember their good experiences with you, and you've left a chain of work on the internet for the board game community to enjoy for years to come. And hey, if you were still going 100% full speed with no speed bumps, you wouldn't have this time to re-evaluate and re-orient yourself in quite the same way. There's always a silver lining and it's worth dwelling on it from time to time. Here's hoping you build great new personal and professional contacts in the near future, as it seems you've already got a handle on the higher priorities.

I don't know if there will ever be a point where you end up reconnecting with Alex or West (it's unclear from the video whether you two are still in touch) or your other former collaborators, but even if it's not with an intent to make content with them, I'm curious if your diagnosis and other personal efforts would serve as a bridge to rebuild and strengthen relationships with people you had been close to in the past. I've been desperate to get a consistent weekly game group together haha Also, I've been a long time subscriber and I truly think you need to do what you love with the channel. Negative comments are like weeds; they sprout unexpectedly, overshadow the positives, and are ever-present. However, investing in wholesome seeds like relationships, spirituality, and marriage will invariably be rewarding and fruitful. Don't fret over weeding its exhausting; simply sow good seeds, and they will eventually outgrow the undesirable ones.
    Have you ever thought about creating content on games that have been overlooked due to corporate marketing hype? I'm always on the lookout for underdog games; they're often just as good and don't cost much. Speaking of past games, I recently discovered one called 'Shark,' an intense and thrilling economic game that is very cutthroat. Not many RUclips channels showcase games from the past or talk about the less popular ones, and frankly, I'm tired of the hype surrounding new release games.
    Ultimately, you don't have ADHD or dyslexia; what you do have is a wife who loves and supports you, and with that, you can conquer a kingdom.

      The internet loves to hear itself talk :) w all interact as if its imaginary and then all go home feeling worse and less connected.
      For older (nonhype) games - the hard part is the algorithm and the audience don't reward that content. We have and will continue to try - but they just don't get seen or watched as much as evergreen or hype driven stuff.

    Old friend here Jessie. My advice is to cut bait from the industry. Several of the things you described (watching your subscriber numbers every 5 mins), is exactly how I felt watching my own Kickstarter numbers or social media metrics. Or comparing myself to others in the space. It stopped being fun, and started being way too stressful. I’ll always cherish the time I’ve had in the industry, but I realized jt was time to step back and treat as nothing more than one small hobby in my life of which there are many. Focus on your family and yourself, get a full time salary job so you don’t have to stress every day about keeping a steady influx of contractual work. You’re way too talented to be struggling financially. I’m sure countless marketing agencies or video production companies would love to have you. Anyway man, keep your head up and take care of home base - that’s so much more important than all of this other stuff. See ya!

    Just an assumption based on watching RUclips for too long...
    It seems the best route would be individual videos about individual aspects of certain games.
    For example, have a video based around a specific faction in ROOT, explaining how they interact with other factions, tips, etc.

      @Quackalope, your point makes total sense.
      My comment, I was thinking about it from a casual consumer's angle, anecdotally: what are the common areas of confusion or curiosity for newcomers, and how can these be addressed in a quick, digestible format within 10-15 minutes? Beyond the initial run-through, what aspects would players want to delve deeper into?
      In my limited experience, learning complex games can be daunting, and convincing others to join in without a quick start guide adds another layer of challenge. However, once players overcome the initial learning curve and grasp the game's depth, they often become hooked. For instance, I've only managed to get Root to the table a few times due to its perceived complexity, but those who stuck with it eventually found themselves engrossed.
      I should note, I'm more of a casual board gamer myself, which is why I gravitated towards your channel. I was seeking to understand intricate games without having to sift through pages of rules beforehand to determine if they were worth the time investment.

Just because you are such a strong brave man who never cries and has the best job, wife, and family ever . . . As a family man and dad of two boys, I'll just echo how much more important those things are to me compared to just about everything else I do or encounter in life. Work, hobbies, etc. all become less fulfilling in comparison, and work especially serves only being able to spend more time with family and friends. I think for most of us this is a natural transition as we get older and hopefully wiser (haha). A new experience like having a child for example, enters the picture and quite a few things I assumed were super important before then got tossed to the side. Lean into those things that give you and your family joy, and as hard as it can be mentally sometimes, it's ok to let go of all which feels more like squeezing a stone for very little joy in return. Everyone has to evaluate those moments and choices all the time as we age. I wish you luck on your journey.

I think the other thing it highlights the effects of social media in society. We need to remember the social media is just a company and a product. Loss of gaming friends, even if you get new friends, is rough.
    People are more important than things, so priorities that support that are good.
    Dealing with changing mental health is also rough. Please ignore & don't finish reading negative comments from internet strangers. Avoiding uncaring negativity is better for your emotional health.
    Gaming content for $ seems a different goal than gaming videos for fun. And maybe the former is no longer workable? But if you are having fun, then that is a certain kind of success that might be worth pursuing. $ follow fun, or not. But less stress.
    Can you livestream game playing? No editing needed, so a video goes up with less roadblocks.
    I guess I'd be surprised if selling a few big or rare games could generate significant income. Selling to declutter seems a more achievable goal. But even selling takes time.
    Also, promise less. Public goals unmet just feel guilty. Just do what you can, and people will see & respond to what is done. If you still need goals, keep them private. Goals are different from a status update, and updates like this do help fans see where you are in life. Whether that is worth sharing or not, I can see arguments for and against. I might have the attitude of letting your content videos, however many there are, speak for you. OTOH, listen to your patreons.
    Would Ko-fi give you a higher % of donations than Patreon? Adam of ShelfClutter did a video breaking down some of the hidden fees.

      RUclipsrs sell and trade channels all the time. You can hand the keys over and passwords and accounts over to someone. But i get the sense that you would want to maintain control somehow. Perhaps it’s a personality issue, perhaps it’s a legitimate love for the channel that you’d want it to land with someone who would do it justice. Or perhaps you honestly dont know how to handle it off. Either way, it can be done. But like i said, it doesn’t seem like you want to. It seems like you want to maintain control. And possibly have it as passive income which som done else making the content. But i get it, I wouldn’t want to give up something that was such a big part of my life. But i always go back to the original rule of RUclips, dont do it for the money. Do it for the passion. Once it’s about the money, then it is 100% about the money. 24/7 id love for something to live on if I couldn’t maintain it myself. I’d hand it off for someone to do it justice. For the hobby. The reality is if you do content videos some people will love them, some will be indifferent and some will hate them.
    Some will say you brought this on yourself with the events of some months ago, some will say you didnt deserve the fallout, and again thats the way it goes when doing videos like yours.
    If your financial well being depends on your channel then you need to concentrate on that 100%... personal beliefs do NOT pay the bills and support your family, they wont keep the wolves from the door or put food on the table, and if they are supportive then your church leaders will understand that.
    If you have patreon supporters who 'pay' you each month then you need to uphold your end of that bargain and produce content for their support.
    Basically you need to decide what 'you' want to with the channel, and if it cant support you and your family, then you need to diversify into something else to do that.
    The questions you are asking yourself when you sit down to do a video, is no different to many when they go to work every day.
