Bill Bone DON'T STOP WITH THE POINTILLISM!!!! It's wonderful and no one else does it. And the wax!!! I LOVE how original your work is. Please keep going and bring us more!
In several of these seasons, they are relying on natural light which will change over 4 hours. Taking a photo fixes the shadows and light areas in place. And using the photo as a reference as well as studying the true colors of the model as they sit, makes sense.
The winning portrait didn't seem to possess even a smidgen of the sitter's electric personality. I really liked the Grant's vibrant painting. And the paint blobs...love it. It is fun to see an explosion of the artist's exuberance!
Richard E. Grant was lovely, from his self deprecating humor to the part where he selected his portrait and said "awww' when warmly accepting a hug from the excited artist. It makes me like him even more.
I think this is the first episode where I really loved all of the paintings. They were all great likenesses too An amazing group of talented artists! I'm surprised and delighted that the winner was a more traditional artist for a change instead of someone weird and quirky. I am also impressed that she worked mostly directly from life rather than a photo. Difficult in that short span of time.
The selecting process was truly a challenge they all were exceptional..I had to rewind several times and reexamine and came to same conclusion...a true challenge!!!
I tire sometimes of the use of photos and gridding. There’s a live model, and I would be more entranced if the artists would make more use of them. I am a painter and I understand that gridding and photos serve a purpose, (even very traditional artists used them), but as someone who doesn’t have the luxury of a live model, I feel it would be more competitive and interesting if this were more limited in the competition.
I think the issue for me was where it was placed... if it had been near the bottom, away from the face and from the portrait's gaze, it would have been interesting, but in such a prominent location on the canvas, it was a distraction to the portrait itself. That being said, I still would have picked it as this week's top portrait, with Bill's as runner up and the one that actually won being dead last.
Props to the winner for being the only one not using technology! I understand how when most people are using it, you'd want to too, especially for the static lighting and when your sitter is moving (and she had the ADHD sitter!) BUT I wish they wouldn't allow technology in the competition (except for the commission at the end). It would be so much more interesting and make full use of the live models.
I guess I am in the minority.. I did not like the one chosen I found it interesting that she was one of the few interacting with a very lively, energetic model with a lot of personality and none of that is reflected in the final work.
Unpopular opinion: working from photo reference should be banned. What's the point of having a sitter if you're not even looking at them. Basically you're just doing a copy of a photo. The portraits are great. But I think it would add to the challenge, the results will be a lot more interesting and the winner would be someone who really deserves to be the winner.
Agreed. It would certainly separate the wheat from the chaff. Although maybe they're concerned they wouldn't have enough takers if it were banned. It would do a deep cull that they may not want to subject themselves to. I think they like being able to choose from a broader spectrum. Of course quality suffers then.
Also agreed. Seems silly for them to do that when they have the real thing in front if them. I realize a bit part of it is that they’re relying on the grid and I can’t decide if the grid is cheating.
I’m also agreeing why is there a sitter if they will use a photo. And also it doesn’t look right when they paint by using a measured ruler it’s just as they’re filling a puzzle. But I love the show it’s a great show!
You are right. I have recently taken up drawing with charcoal. I am self-taught -- that is to say I'm RUclips taught. For now I am using reference photographs for practice but I don't use the grid method. Did it just once and hated it. I felt like I was just putting bits and pieces together and nothing related as a whole. I was discouraged because I really did feel like I might as well be tracing the image. So one time was enough for me. I just look at the photo and try to draw what I see. One day I hope to advance to live sitters.
First time I see this show. At first I thought, Oh, well there’s nothing else to watch at the moment, however, thry are truly, truly talented. Plus, it was nice having that young man who is just starting out. I would love to see more of their art. The dots painter was my second best and yes, Phoebe’s painting was the best in my estimation. 👍🏽
Love the show. It is inspiring. It is interesting to artists' different styles and techniques. I would love to participate in a competition like this. Great job.
I'm curious how many painters is not aware of the fact, that wide angle lenses distort face and you should use portrait or tele lens. Sometimes it's very subtle yet still visible.
Glad she won. Liked her work best of the three and she had to contend with a really challenging sitter! I thought the sitter was both disrespectful of the contestants and very tiresome.
I found some of the judges questions of the artists cringe worthy. Also they should talk to them during their break not while they are trying to focus and make the most of their time. You can feel the artist's tension while talking to the judges and I would much rather see them paint. I did not think the best painting was chosen, but she is the one who painted from life without a grid so...
I like this series, but am not sure about using photos when the model is right there. Are you copying a photo? Putting grids over the photo and using Photoshop...cheating? The guy with the wax. Very interesting. I think I like it.
As a purist I think it's alright to work off of photos, but overlaying them with grids and drawing off of grids seems like cheating to me. You should be able to eyeball it when composing, in my view....
tHIS IS THE REASON WHY i WANT TO BE INDEPENDENT IN USING GRIDS COZ DRAWING FREE HANDLY AND CAPTURING A LIKENESS THROUGH YOUR OWN HAND AND WITHOUT THE USE OF GRID IS REALLY HELPFUL.
Yes all exceptional. I wouldn’t have been able to choose. And the I also loved the young men. Especially the one who whose original was on the floor panel
You know what they say about art and the left handedness. How many of the top artists r left handed? But after seeing many of the portrait n landscape artists so far, I came across only 2. Both in the same video. Amazing
I feel for that young fella , it is quite apparent that they have Purposely avoided speaking about , or sharing his progress, or lack of during the filming.
sorry, but I thought the winning painting was really boring. Having seen Sue in many things , it did not seem to capture her energy, wit or humor and visually did nothing to grab you. Traditional is fine but there needs to be something visually intriguing or dramatic.
Respectfully disagree with the judges final decision. I feel that the portrait of Richard E Grant was the best and the winning artist should have been Kathleen. Thanks!
the judges have snubbed the more talented artists for the second time now this season, not a great start, about to give up on this show for that reason alone
I agree it was unfortunate, but they should learn from it as the winning piece wasn't from the painter that painted Richard. I think if Emily would have worked with Richard she would have won.
2018 we a huge disappointment when they picked winner. HUGE! The whole room went silent and my family said to turn it off lol. I hope 2019 is better. That bald guy should of won 2018.
Nothing more anti-human than sitting there....and nobody looks at you. Might as well go somewhere more fun for 3 hours, and come back when they are almost finished.
I thought the same was really disappointing that we didn't get to know Richard more because no kne talked to him. It makes me proud that I can draw without a grid. I want to go paint Richard.

I feel the same..the winner seemed to be painting in a courtroom setting
Richard E. Grant was lovely, from his self deprecating humor to the part where he selected his portrait and said "awww' when warmly accepting a hug from the excited artist. It makes me like him even more.
I also liked the part where he called out the contestants for not actually appreciating the point of painting from life.

Thank you so more for sharing this joy with the world.
My very best favorite series on this platform. I would like to see this in the U.S. Probably a big hit on reality T.V.
I get it in Canada.
Yeah. Have seen many of these. All interesting in different ways. But this rates as one of the best. Thanks for posting.
I actually really liked the inclusion of the pallet on the painting
I think the issue for me was where it was placed... if it had been near the bottom, away from the face and from the portrait's gaze, it would have been interesting, but in such a prominent location on the canvas, it was a distraction to the portrait itself. I think their self portraits have the best likenesses I’ve seen so far.
I guess I am in the minority.. I did not like the one chosen I found it interesting that she was one of the few interacting with a very lively, energetic model with a lot of personality and none of that is reflected in the final work.

I agree, they are missing the spontaneity of the sitter and in a way it’s sort of rude!

I would’ve loved to have painted that beautiful man. None of them took advantage of actually looking at him for four hours

Nice to see Frank is back!
He is not ‘back’ you are seeing re-runs. Steven Mangan is the current cohost.
Glad she won. Liked her work best of the three and she had to contend with a really challenging sitter! I thought the sitter was both disrespectful of the contestants and very tiresome.

It just helps with proportions. Try doing it, It doesn't magically make you into an artist.
As a purist I think it's alright to work off of photos, but overlaying them with grids and drawing off of grids seems like cheating to me. You should be able to eyeball it when composing, in my view....
I wish they had a US version because I'd love to participate in this so much T-T
tHIS IS THE REASON WHY i WANT TO BE INDEPENDENT IN USING GRIDS COZ DRAWING FREE HANDLY AND CAPTURING A LIKENESS THROUGH YOUR OWN HAND AND WITHOUT THE USE OF GRID IS REALLY HELPFUL.
....toss the grid! ....let it flow
Yes all exceptional. I wouldn’t have been able to choose. And the I also loved the young men. Especially the one who whose original was on the floor panel
A painting made from a photo is a different species than a painting made from life.
She's the only one who didn't take a photo and I like that. Very personal artist 🎨 👌
You know what they say about art and the left handedness. How many of the top artists r left handed? But after seeing many of the portrait n landscape artists so far, I came across only 2. Both in the same video. Amazing
I feel for that young fella , it is quite apparent that they have Purposely avoided speaking about , or sharing his progress, or lack of during the filming.
wonderful episode. The first i have seen. Wonderful fun artists.
I'm an artist. These people are exceptionally talented and skilled.
Finally I agree with the judges :)
I preferred the artist that Grant picked.
sorry, but I thought the winning painting was really boring. Having seen Sue in many things , it did not seem to capture her energy, wit or humor and visually did nothing to grab you. Traditional is fine but there needs to be something visually intriguing or dramatic.
Definitely I’m so impressed with their artworks.☺️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Grids i absolutely dislike. Freehand is art.
So happy a freehand painting was in the top 3
I wish I could be part of this prestigious competition one day. 🙏🙏🙏🙏
The sitter that don't stop talking and moving makes me nervous. I don't think I would have chemistry to paint her.
I hate that the editing just focuses on half of the artists and not all of them
What is the lovely music tune at minute 27 ish?
When P.Ao.t.Y meets Richard E. Grant, I am in my own personal Nirvana.
It's kind of weird how many famous faces they got to sit for paintings, then the prize is to paint just Graham Norton?
Respectfully disagree with the judges final decision. I feel that the portrait of Richard E Grant was the best and the winning artist should have been Kathleen. Thanks!
I love the pointillism painter the best
What is the music on the start?
If I want to participate in this competition. How is it possible.
Should have given it to the dot guy. Even the paint blob lady would have been better. The head looked a bit small. They're all great painters.
Did they do a season 4?
Even more than that.
Do classically trained artists think painters using grids are sort of cheating?
Why would you give that Susan lady a chair that moves. When they have to sit still y give a chair with wheels
私はバロックの技術を学ぶためにヨーロッパ中を旅しました、そして私は最高でした。
These guys are GRIDDING? Oh my goodness the time of the live models is wasted on them.
Looking down on traditional, classical art styles is not only small minded but subversive
Thanks for uploading! I always wonder if Sue Perkins has ADHD
Frank is right. Sue looked like a fussy local politician. She chatted with her for four hours and got no personality on the canvas at all.
the judges have snubbed the more talented artists for the second time now this season, not a great start, about to give up on this show for that reason alone
I feel some of these artists are horribly rude. They didn't speak to their sitter. They made him feel uncomfortable.
He has ear buds in. I didn’t find them rude at all.
I agree it was unfortunate, but they should learn from it as the winning piece wasn't from the painter that painted Richard. I think if Emily would have worked with Richard she would have won.
You know how much concentration you need? You have to focus. Talking you can do before and after.
Isn't cheeting using photoshop and grids etc
The judges got it right this time.
2018 we a huge disappointment when they picked winner. HUGE! The whole room went silent and my family said to turn it off lol. I hope 2019 is better. That bald guy should of won 2018.
McKayla should have gotten a top 3 instead of Bill
Nothing more anti-human than sitting there....and nobody looks at you. Might as well go somewhere more fun for 3 hours, and come back when they are almost finished.

No fancy sets for the sitters to sit in this series, then? No posing by the judges. Hhm, okay.
No.
The woman with the glasses was so annoying
I wouldn't want her as my sitter
Like
Judging these marvelous artist is silly.... Opinionated snobs votes are supposed to matter ,but the truth is you like who you like
my brother and me we can painting
Sue's silly chatter ruined the episode for me.
Too bad Sue needed to be self centered and disruptive and disrespectful of the process at the cost of others futures
