Black Mesa - Questionable Ethics - Lobby Battle

- One of the most badass parts of Black Mesa, where Gordon Freeman is ambushed by the HECU just before Surface Tension.
I had uploaded my take on this battle when the mod version released back in 2012. Since then, a couple of things have happened:
1) Black Mesa went retail and got a bunch of polish and new updates
2) I got a new computer so I can run this game at 1080p 60fps with minimal drops
I was able to record new footage of the game, and since the Xen release is right around the corner, thought I'd redo some of my old videos. Also tried to sync the Tau cannon to the ending of the song once again. Enjoy!
Original version: • Black Mesa (2012): Que...
For anybody that is interested, I made an updated video of this sequence in my Definitive Edition playthrough of the chapter, linked here ruclips.net/video/Gnurktyx3tc/видео.html (timestamp: 27:49).
Much like the game I consider it to be the "definitive" version of the fight and I personally find it miles better than this one as I had the time to polish my mouse movements and syncing with the music :) Give it a watch:
Thank you for posting the timestamp! I agree, and appreciate the time you put in to make an even better version of this amazing scene.
The Gauss Gun blasting at the end litterly sync's so perfectly
Thanks!! Definitely tried to go for that haha
@@Sexy_Nutella I'm glad I'm not the only one who quickloaded repeatedly just to do this fight in sync with the music.
Yeahhh.thats was epic and perfect timing 😀
Too right. It gave me a semi.

I think it’s fair to accept this is cannon for how freeman handled the fight
Lore accurate Gordon Freeman.
The moment when the door closes gives the player a jolt of panic; you think, "Oh, no, here come more enemies, and my allies are worried about my survival!" But then, the music really kicks in along with the gameplay skills you've built up over the previous parts of the campaign and you have a moment of realization: you're not locked in there with them. They're locked in there with *you*. Then, your allies catch up and are audibly horrified at what you've done. What an absolute masterclass in making the player feel like an absolute badass.
Yup, the actual fight itself absolutely railed me the first twenty times I played through it, but finally getting through it to see the carnage you've created is amazing. The scientists' reactions are icing on the cake.
Dude that is awesome!
bruh what do you mean at you're not locked in there with them- they're locked in there with you?..isn't that the same thing
@@MaxwellE985 late reply but he’s basically saying that Gordon is so badass that when the military attempts to “trap”him their the ones actually trapped since well their all gonna die by the freeman’s might
@@justsomeguyontheinternet5898 ohh ok
I think the scientists at the end are having two reactions at once here:
1. This man just turned a plethora of highly trained elite killers- who *set him up* - into a pile of mincemeat. This level of violence is cruel and ruthless!
2. If he _didn't_ do that, we'd all be dead right now, so maybe I _won't_ call him an absolute maniac.
That's a good take on why they reacted the way they did!
It is also a reference to Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, with Indiana Jones senior saying the same thing about his son massacring a room full of nazis
THANK GOD HE’S ON OUR SIDE! Basically.
@@MotorcycleCheetahThey're lucky Shephard wasn't there on the first day.

Technically it is.
Well, it just depends on which military you’re taking about.
I love how everyone is like "Freeman? Are you alright?" If there's still gunshots, he's still alive.
Freeman can’t be killed by anything. ANYTHING.

"Talk to us Dammit!"
Not much of a scientist if he didn't notice that Freeman doesn't even talk to himself.
to be fair, black mesa's a big place and not many of the scientists know about freeman personally
freeman probably talked before the incident, but everything was happening so fast that he didnt even have time to speak during the games
This is *real* Gordon Freeman
No wonder everyone looks at Freeman with admiration in HL2 - dude became a badass overnight in Black Mesa.
Now unstand why gordon Freeman its legedaly
imagine what those scientists must think!
the door closes and the last thing they see is freeman disappearing with a helicopter hovering above. after the door closes they hear nothing but shouting, gunshots and explosions. when the door opens they see gordon standing there surrounded by dismembered body parts and dead soldiers!
if i were one of those scientists i'd literally shit myself!
You really put what the scientists must've been feeling into a great perspective. Freeman has already killed scores of HECU too by this point but this is the first time other observers were present. No wonder they were so shocked!
Honestly I think this is the greatest scene in gaming. The crowbar collective really knocked it out of the park with this
It's an amazing sequence for sure
"Look at what you did!"
"My god..."
"I...can't believe you did this..."
The mix of horror and sheer awe cements Gordon as a certified badass.
Agreed! Such a critical moment in his transformation
I mean, he killed all of them and that's horrifying
but at the same time he's your last hope
I think that's an Indiana Jones 3 reference
@@TheDude8008lol it is! I'm surprised how many people missed it, I laughed so hard
This scene in Black Mesa is the absolute pinnacle of the game to me. And the full finalization of Gordan Freeman switching his role, from an annoying mild threat of a scientist into an actual killing machine. Its like his character arc has hit its climax, this is the moment Gordon transferred from survivor to hunter. Earlier in the game the HECU wanted him because he was killing their men and resisting, and he was aided by his suit and some minor skills he obtained after the inital events fighting the slower and weaker enemies like zombies. But then, at this point he became a legitimate threat to the HECU, they couldnt take him down no matter how hard they tried. I imagine in the heat of the moment Gordon was just acting on instinct, and as he looks around at the bodies he stacked he thinks nothing of it, because he has taken so many up to this point. Everyone else is in shock, but now its just another day at the office for Gordon.
Well said. This is the moment where Gordon became the deadly unstoppable force that will stop at nothing until he saves the planet, and I'd wager his actions here spouted all those legendary stories people tell of him in the HL2 story arc which made the Combine REALLY worried about him.
That's exactly my headcanon and I couldn't have said it better. The big moment when the introverted geeky scientist with once barely any self-defense skills dies. The extreme circumstances pushed the hunt to become the hunter and its quick development to the point of obliterating alien forces and dozens of the most highly trained military in the world is as ridiculous as it sounds, which is why G-Man is so interested in Gordon, a person who, in his words, "adapts and survives against all odds" and has "limitless potential" (almost like a literal dimensional anomaly, but I guess here is where the stretch starts xD).
I think something that aids my thoughts here on this being Gordon's climax as a character is the fact that before this he had never faced a major combative threat besides the initial military engagement after reaching the surface for the first time and even then in most play throughs he runs quickly to safety as he is hunted. But Surface Tension has Gordon actively engaging the HECU Marines full force in what would be impossible odds. Fighting off not just Marines but their armor and aircraft and quite effectively. The Marines are setting up defensive positions rather than usually hunting down freeman. They want him to come to them because they know hunting him won't work. They have become the hunted. Freeman has evolved. Maybe he truly is an anomaly given his insane combat prowess versus Marines and special forces who trained for years to be the best fighters in the world.
this is the moment the game turned from a survival horror to a shoot ‘em up
@@echostar034 Props to G-man for keeping this valuable asset out of harm's way during the Combine invasion and then infiltrating him into the capital of occupation forces.
This entire part is literally Freeman's revenge for what they did back in the Apprehension when they knocked Freeman out and take his weapons away.
The scientist standing at the door, while both of you are looking at the Osprey: "They're waiting for you Gordon, in the lobby ambushhhhhh."
Yeah, the VTOL shouldve arrived a few secs later, then if wouldve been perfect
I love how they reacting about what Gordon did
Yeah. That's one thing that Black Mesa did very well: hitting home the point that Gordon Freeman became a legend in HL2 for a reason.
I like how the scientists reacted to Gordon's masacre
Yeah, it's as if they are both in awe and scared of Freeman.
This scene is a great example for how Black Mesa accentuates some parts of the game that are usually overlooked. Usually in regular HL1 when you reach this place, you shoot a few soldiers, use the scanner, go outside and don't think much of it. In Black Mesa, however, they used this part as an opportunity to really show how badass Gordon is and the crazy odds that are stacked up against him.
It's crazy how good HL1 was at environmental storytelling, yet there were so many parts that I still missed in all my playthroughs. But then Black Mesa comes along and shines a spotlight on those parts and it makes me realize how deep the storytelling in HL1 went, and that it perhaps was trying to say more than it was able to meaningfully communicate.
I also loved how they ended the chapter in Black Mesa; I always thought the ending was anti-climactic in the original
They expanded on a lot of things that I had gotten "vibes" for from the environment in the original, making certain details more overt or just flowing better due to the lack of technological limitations.
They also "fill in the blanks" on some areas, like how in apprehension you find the soldiers dead in the control room, jumped by headcrabs before they could make sure the job was done, which explains why you were just randomly left in there in the original
Also turned that part of the game into a turning point of sorts, a climax. At this point it becomes clear the military isn't just passively bumping into you or confidently trying to cleanly eliminate you. They already tried that, but now they're desperately trying to kill you outright, playing dirty, and are not playing nice anymore. Like throwing a satchel into a pipe to ambush you. You are their primary target during Surface Tension, correspondingly consisting of the most difficult HECU engagements in the game. But at the same time they're getting overwhelmed by Alien Grunts, culminating into one final major battle before the elevator into the Lambda lab. They finally say "fuck it", hence "Forget About Freeman". You never see HECU again once you reach the core.
Black Mesa ignited the narrative fuel that Valve left over due to technical limitations. Can't imagine the lobby fight packing the same narrative punch without this track.
THANK YOU FOR RECORDING THIS!!! I WANTED TO SHOW THIS FIGHT TO MY FRIEND BUT ALL THE VIDS I COULD FIND WERE TERRIBLE

0:33 THEY'VE SET A TRAP FOR HIM
nutella: I've set a trap for them.
I'm not sure which is true:
1) HECU locks Gordon in as an attempt to kill him.
2) Scientists locked Gordon in to save themselves.
3) Gordon locks the scientists out to protect them.
I think I'll go with 3 for being more badass. You made it look like 2 and it looks funny.
Also you can see this scientist at lamda core if you choose one of the teleporters that means a happy ending for them
Probably 1 since the door locking was so sudden and quick when gordon went out you can also hear the scientists being worried at gordon
@@itsmant3 The nuclear warhead that killed literally every Black Mesa employee 💀
@@Tommyknocker. not all of them
@@itsmant3 Black Mesa has limited amount of NPC models and actors to voice them. Lambda Core is very far away from the bio labs, so these guys most likely died either from aliens, or soldiers, or a nuke. Lambda Core employees are also dead, thanks to the same nuke. There were no teleports leading to the surface, so I doubt they could get out. Barney with his group were able to get out only thanks to an old teleportation lab they found & made it's equipment start again.
This fight felt so true to OG Half Life, one of my favorite parts of the mod aside from the initial Xen reveal
The shotgun blast at the start of the firefight that changed the music was AWESOME
This is awesome. All I wanted was to see that fight again and rehear the completely shocked reaction from the NPCs. Instead, I got that, really good gameplay, and stuff synced to the song. Thank you for this!

Awesome! That was the first time I even heard Definitive Edition was a thing. I'm excited to see how the game performance might improve for me now. As before, the fight was excellent. I just love Questionable Ethics. Probably my favorite chapter in HL, and in Black Mesa it's outstanding.
I remember playing this part back in 2012 for the first time. I got obliterated so quickly
Same. 2012 Black Mesa was no joke when it came to difficulty haha
Tbh i died many times here
I think the music creator nailed it because it literally ends at the exact moment the fight ends for me always...with some kind of final boom or blast syncing with the end note...
Joel might have gone back and made it so that it ends right at the final shot then. At the time of this video I literally had to time to song with my actions
The music is done so well the whole way through, it kicks in again a bit later in this same section, when you jump into a courtyard and get the drop on another group, except this time you're taking them by surprise
I mean if you play on hard chances are the music ends before you kill them, they're a lot more dangerous
"They've set a trap for him" More like set a trap for themselves.
"Look at what you did!" That's epic.. this scientists better have some faith cuz they are seeing the ultimate champion of earth in action.

Also interesting to think that this is the final push from the Marines to get Freeman. The rest of the marines pulled out earlier after "forget about Freeman" so these ones stayed behind probably just for revenge against Freeman. This really is their final hurrah as we don't really see them much after this IIRC.
Naw, this was actually before Forget about Freeman so there's still plenty of HECU at this point in time on the ground fighting the aliens. But they do have a personal vendetta against Freeman for sure
