Reagan and Gorbachev’s Relationship Warmed Cold War Tensions

  • In the 1980s, the Soviet Union and United States held a number of summits to come to terms with the two country’s growing nuclear arsenals. The country’s leaders, Ronald Reagan and Mikhail Gorbachev, got to know each other during these sessions and developed a personal rapport. Reagan’s charisma and personal warmth enabled him to disarm Gorbachev who was more formal and reserved. Because of their relationship, the two world leaders were more willing to have conversations and negotiate leading to the INF Treaty. The treaty mandated the removal of a specific class of intermediate-range ballistic missiles from each country’s active inventories. That historic treaty foreshadowed the end of the Cold War.

He did not "give it up." He was voted out. The irony is that while America went wild for Gorbie - Limbaugh called it "Gorbasms" - he was vilified in his own country. After the collapse, Gorachev tried twice to run again, but drew almost no votes. He was held responsible by the voters for the fall of the empire. Putin despises Gorbachev for this same reason.

Reagan, "the amiable dunce" as the ACTUAL amiable dunce, Tip O'Neill, once called him, proved to be one VERY sharp guy, who in fact managed to end the Cold War (with help from Thatcher and Pope John Paul) by using America's strength against the Soviet Union. Reagan personally killed the Soviet Union, although it was left to HW Bush to be at the helm when that empire collapsed in a heap in 1991. "Mr. Gorbachev, tear DOWN this wall!" What an impact those six simple words had on this world! I challenge anyone to tell me anything of such memorable substance that any subsequent US President has ever uttered during his tenure in office. In contrast, Gorbachev was widely despised in Russia, and remains so to this day, because the Soviet empire collapsed during his watch.

I don’t think Western people realize what regular citizens of former Soviet Union had to go through after it’s dissolution. Gorbachev was romantic but he was not an economist he destroyed the supply chain that was connecting all former republics of Soviet Union, the currency collapsed people lost their savings and livelihoods, there was horrific unemployment, people had no groceries at the stores nothing to eat.
As much as charismatic he was he left a bad aftertaste, you could compare that situation to American Great Depression but worse, yes Russia was able to recover but countries in Central Asia couldn’t because all Russian engineers and business people who were able to run the business and economy who were able to build infrastructure left, only a few brave people remain. Depression drove people to alcoholism because they still were grieving loses of WW II. Yes it was convenient for American interests but interests of Soviet citizens weren’t included.

The chaos in Russia and disorder was at that time, the time of the rise of gangster Capitalism which allowed opportunists to steal and run overseas. So, Russia couldn't help anyone during that time because they had their own problems piling up. Illegal drugs were brought in, alcoholism was increasing, and people who lost their jobs and savings were depressed. You can equate that to the great depression in a way.
Europe prospered at the expense of cheap Russian resources and other developing nations. They waged wars in the middle east, and Russia doesn't want anything to do with Europe either. They should've just built the wall during WW II and let Europe burn.
