I love him, he looks like my lab as a puppy! Question though, how do you know or decide where to put the different colors? I get the dark vs light, on a monochromatic painting but this style intrigues and confuses me.
I did use a reference photo for this one and also turned it into black and white before painting. Then used darker shades where the shadows are and lighter where not. If that makes any sense. When choosing and placing color I went with my instinct :) I hope that helps.
