I lived in China and still speak fluent Mandarin. I think I can learn Thai fast because Manadarin is just like this. A lot of words sound the same.

My understanding is that Chinese is similar in that two words can be almost alike, except the inflection is different, and totally changes the meaning of the word depending on what syllable has the emphasis.
Brother, I've been learning Mandarin off and on for the last couple of years. Tonal languages are difficult, because you have to learn those different tones for the vowels.
