That is going to be my dive computer. Was meant to get it before a trip next week, but had something else pop up that took the funds. So will get it early next year.
@@DiversReady Fantastic! Have you (or any other dive channels you could recommend) done any thorough reviews on the Apeks Exotec, and Hollis 200LX? I'm looking at pairing those two up as my first diving rig, it seems to be a good set up for doing a bit of recreational diving (mostly travelling out of NZ to warm environments), and future proofed for getting into tech diving. Although, I am also tempted to just get a BPW set up instead of the Exotec.
@@DiversReady eagerly waiting for this review having recently having transitioned from a Scubapro A2 (major quality control issues) and the Scubapro G2 (decent, but some irritations and screen not bright enough) to the Tern TX (backup) and Peregrine TX (Primary). Immediate irritation with the Tern is the Air and Nitrox icons. When the computer is configured for Nitrox, when selecting 21% the gas icon still shows Nx, where as the Peregrine defaults to 'Air' when you select 21% in Nitrox mode, as it should. The watch time out, which is not motion activated is annoying as hell, as you have already pointed out in your review. Immediate irritation with the Peregrine, the inclusion of the word 'Air' on the Bottom Row, which is a non-configurable field feels like a waste of real estate. Most divers (I assume) would prefer another configurable field. It would make sense to have an Air and Nitrox icon (with o2 percentage) somewhere else on the display to free up this space for say another Mini 3 field. The use of icons would also provide a consistent experience across devices, whilst appreciating the Peregrine is larger than the Tern.
Bought and dived my brand new Tern TX with Air Integration this summer. It was awesome. Having air Integration was a game changer. Being able to see your SAC in realtime is super helpful and makes you mindful about your breathing.
I belive they SAC is in Psi per min. You need to tell it the the cylinder size and pressure too I believe. A better way of sac is to record your start press at the botttom and end pressure before ascent, time and AVG depth and do the math.
I updated my Oceanic Pro Plus X to the Tern TX just two months ago. So now I will be diving with my Teric and TERN TX as my back-up. They are easy to program to I what want to see. They are also easy to read.
I think the Tern and Tern Tx were launched in 2024 at the same time. Perhaps you mean the Peregrine (2020) and Peregrine Tx (2024)? I love my Tern Tx, the only gripe I have is the included straps. I can't get the included long one over my dry suit, so replaced it with the Remora webbing strap. So I just factored in an extra £15 to the cost, which on the scale of things, is hardly world ending.
Great video as always James. I love my Perdix 2 w/AI. Amazingly easy to program, understand and use. It will soon be my backup to a Petrel 3, when I start diving CCR in the spring.
Totally agree. I started off with the Perdix and love that one too, but the Tern TX is perfect for my recreational dives and instructor dives. Thanks for the review.
“Tougher than boiled owl.” New one that. Stealin’ dat. My open water cert is this weekend in PCB. My first tech purchase was a computer, on your recommendation; and a Peregrine TX, on my own. It seems I picked a wonderful time to quit amphetamines. Dive safe.
I have 26 dives on the Tern TX and love it. I only have a few gripes. The compass needs to be calibrated daily to keep a proper course under water, the factory screen protector started peeling up on one edge after about 20 dives or so, and the watch settings. I use the following: Settings, Display, Timeouts, watch timeout, No Motion. This display setting causes the watch to timeout with no motion, but they can't make it wake up with motion. Makes no sense!
Got my wife a tern tx a while back. The battery on this thing is phenomenal. Also like a smaller size , I'm a skinny guy, and my teric have a tendency to dig into my wrist bone while wearing outside the water.
The Remora Webbing strap is the Perdix strap just with the plastic parts to hold it to the computer and the parts to hold the tail. I was Perdix straps on my Terics and picked up an orange Remora to try out, I was able to take the extra parts off the Remota and put them on my Perdix straps as a test.
I've got 20 dives on mine and it is great.. No problem with transmitter comms. I have the same beef with having to hit the button to see the time. I wish it was either always on or like recommended it comes on with a wrist movement.
You missed one thing. Garmin Fenix 8 now on market in in similar price and its recreational dive computer up to 40m (build like descent with amoled) with full garmin ecosystem and daily watch. So there good fight for market. For new driver you can have garmin as normal watch, and it is reducing budget cost of having additional dive computer.
I have the perdix AI, have for a number of years and have no plans to change it, main feature I love, user replaceable battery so I never have to deal with an end of life internal battery replacement.
apart from the wristband, that is VERY short, the tern tx is a very nice and reliable computer. you cannot use it with an 5mm or 7mm suit. 3mm barely works. all in all: great computer.
Don't have a sharewater, but I completely agree on the tilt to display. My Drive computer has this feature... While underwater as well I am generally not looking at my dive computer. When I look at my dive computer I will be tilting my wrist. I cannot see why this functionality shouldn't be built in
with wristwatch-style dive computers, I teach my students to wear it under the wrist. More ergonomically correct and reduces chances of snagging with things
Is it possible to change the straps on these to "regular watch" NATO straps? Does anyone know what the lug width is in that case? I have not really found any sources on the matter.
I have a TernTX and love it EXCEPT for a major irritation that it estimates pressure at +40 mBar over the true pressure. Measuring ambient pressure is a computer’s only job and it’s mis-calibrated from factory. Doesnt really affect diving except it thinks that my PPO2 is +0.01 higher than true
I bought the Peregrine TX as my second dive computer (yes I purchased a Aqualung POS first), and I LOVE IT, seriously for my old tired eyes it's the ducks nuts. I looked at the TERN but the screen size was a pinch small. BTW - how do you mount your GoPro on your wing webbing so you don't get face and bubbles continuously in frame?
I just purchased a Tern TX. My watch stays on. It turn off 10 minutes after it stops detecting motion. Exactly what James was asking for. Is this a set up issue, or was there a firmware update to address it?
I noticed you dive with Deep 6.. can you please do a review and/or perhaps a comparison with the Apeks xtx 50 or apeks equivalent product? You probably are the only person who will talk about his experience using both ? Awesome video btw. I just pickuped the Perdix 2 Ti with a transmitter. About to get the 2nd with a Sidemount regulator setup and am torn between Apeks XTX 50 and Deep 6.
for the best quality, shearwater is second to none. Just find the model that suits you, like the peregrine for the brick style or this tern for the watch style.
When does the tech become too much? I see divers so wrapped up into their computers, they miss out on the real sights out there. I also fly and watch other pilots consumed with the screens. I get it when tech can make for safer experiences, but too much of a good thing can crowd the mind, as in cell phones....
I completely agree with your analysis. The sucky part is it really depends on the dive shop you go with. I bought ScubaPro EVERYTHING (G2 Tek, HUD, transmitters, etc) until I purchased my Cho₂ptima, in which I bought ALL NEW Shearwater gear.
Thanks for the review. I find it odd that everyone always boasts about shearwater's customer support. It makes me wonder how many of these are defective so that almost everyone has had experience with customer support? Currently I have 3 suuntos, one of which is over 15 years old, and none have ever seen customer support. Don't get me wrong, I really want to switch over to shearwater, but I am concerned about why so many people have experience with customer support. Are the computers that glitchy?
I have one problem with this computer I just feel like it’s price isn’t really entry level it’s still 1000$ with a transmitter and I just feel like I would get a predix or a teric at that point
Exectly. I see why somebody would buy a Peregrine non TX as an advanced recreational diver. But the price is just to high and you need to buy a 400$ transmitor to use the AI.
Love my perdix 2 but I would have leapt at the opportunity to get a peregrine tx or tern TX if they were around as a new diver instead of the garbage Cressi's I got haha
The Tern is a good computer but, at $1000, it's inexplicably missing basic features that would be found on a $300 dive computer from 20 years ago, such as depth and time alerts. It's becoming obvious that Shearwater is going the same way as the mainstream competitors in focusing more on revenue and less on value for money. I also really don't like that you can configure only one element of the display on the main page.
I am sorry to say it, but a dive computer for 775$ without tax is hardly an entry level computer. By no means i am saying the Tern or Tern TX is a bad computer. But my first computer cost me 250$ and it did it's job fine for over 150 dives in a 4 months time span. I know that diving isn't a cheap hobby/sport, however there are a lot of computers that do an ok job for a recreational diver that don't cost nearly 800$ and thats without the transmitter which costs another 400$. If a fresh open water diver that's just diving for 2 or 3 weeks a year in warm water asks me, i would reccomend a simple Suunto Zoop Novo because it is more then enough for what he is doing. And that is the entry level market.
Just picked up the peregrine tx for the larger display due to my aged eyes. Shearwater computers are great for sure.
That is going to be my dive computer. Was meant to get it before a trip next week, but had something else pop up that took the funds. So will get it early next year.
The Peregrine TX review is coming next week!

Tougher than a boiled owl? High praise indeed!
FYI, the Tern and Tern TX were released at the same time. 8:21
If I'm ever in the market for a new dive computer I'll probably keep an eye on this one but until then my Aqualung i470TC will do.
They should be able to use the "tilt conpensator" or an accelerometer (which are tiny) to detect wrist shake and turn on backlight...

I'm torn.
