  • As part of our series of videos on using and brewing with a FermZilla from Kegland, we show you how you can use the "Closed Loop Transfer" method to move your finished home brew beer from the FermZilla over into a keg with very little chance of oxygen contact!
    This simple yet effective way of moving finished beer offers the brewer a way to limit oxygen contact but also reduce their consumption of CO2 in the brewery!

    Loving all of the how to content. Even after having done this for a few years, it's great to see all of the methods and tools available. I tend to go with the condensation method when filling a keg and always seems to be accurate for me 👍

    My method is similar but I usually start with 1 or 2 psi more pressure in the corny keg which is already on the foor. I then connect the gas posts first to equalise pressure then connect liquid line followed by a quick pull on the pressure relief on the corny keg to start the flow.🍻

    Relly like your posts they are so useful. On keg there are obviously 2 conections. One at the top and one that goes all the way to the bottom of the keg. Does the gas always go onto the one at the top both whilst filling and emptying?

      Yes, the gas post is the one you then hook up to your CO2 line for dispensing your beer.

    I use a steam generator designed for stripping wallpaper with a line to the gas in of the keg. Add a connector to the beer out and you can purge the O2 and sterilise the keg (after thorough cleaning) at the same time. The keg must be pressurised with CO2 after steaming in order to stop the atmosphere crushing the keg as the steam condenses.

    It’s good to put a bit of Co2 on top of the beer in the keg and a floating dip tube in the keg and then always serving from the top of the keg hence clearer beer right to the bottom

    Great video. One thing I can't do, due to space, but I think is a great idea for saving CO2, is to hook up the gas post on the Fermzilla to the keg whilst it's brewing and put your spunding valve on the keg instead of the Fermzilla. You'r still pressure fermenting but the excess CO2 that your spunding valve would normally kick out is purging your keg whilst your beer brews. Sadly, I can't fit the keg AND Fermzilla in my fridge.

    Great video guys, Question! Does the keg (even if it’s a 19ltr one) have to be absolutely full of sanitizer to purge out, or can it be just enough for it to clear out of the keg and lines

      It depends on how particular you are with purging. The best way would be to fill with sanitiser and then empty with CO2, this way you can guarantee you have all the air removed from the Keg. You can alternatively put in a few litres, shake to cover all surfaces and then purge with CO2 before you use the CO2 to empty the sanitiser

    So if the keg is smaller than the fermenter, just putting a flowstopper (minus the spunding valve) on the CO2 return line should mean you get a set-and-forget system with no additional gas needed? Nice.

    Really good video. Been using this method a good bit these days but way better explained than I've ever been able to. A spunding valve on the gas line back to the fermenter (starting with equal pressure) is very handy for slow starting too if you're already carbonated.

    What's the best method for reducing oxygen when transferring from bucket type fermenters to keg or bottles please

      There are a few things you can deploy to assist with this, firstly if you're kegging and have a CO2 set up for dispense, you can add a small amount of Co2 to the top of the FV, through the airlock hole whilst you fill the keg, making sure you have purged the keg of air before hand. You can even add a beer post to some line attached to the tap on the FV to fill the keg from the bottom, like you would with a pressure transfer. Be sure to only have a dribble of pressure going in though as you could easily add too much and blow the lid off the plastic FV. For bottles, if you have CO2 system then purge the bottles with CO2 before you fill them, if you don't have CO2 then make sure you use high quality crown caps with the oxygen scrubbing barrier and be very gentle once they are filled and capped to not jostle them around for a few days, this will allow the secondary fermentation to occur and naturally use up excess oxygen. It will be more or less successful dependent on beer styles but try these methods out and see how you get on!

    You ask for a subject to run a vid on..... Here goes.... Been brewing all grain for nearly 500 years and still learning. How about some guidence on glass washing. How toos etc. My glasses come out of the dishwasher brilliantly but I have quite a few nice Belgian glasses that I cant seem to get clean, Dishwashing them buggers up all to artwork on them.
    When I bought them years ago in Brugge the guy was agahst that they should even go near a dishwasher., Any ideas....

    The amount of o2 it take to kill a hoppy beer is tiny, purge your transfer lines too! Speaking from experience 😣 5:10
