I was at this concert. I was in the Army, stationed at Camp Zama (outside of Tokyo) and I got free tickets from the Army Service Club for this concert. I got to the Budokan very early and just wandered around and literally ran into the band…they treated me like I was one of the group…one of the biggest thrills of my young life…I am in my late sixties now, and look at that night as one of the great nights of being a music fan.
" Legendary singer, trumpeter dies after long illness" Fans and friends are mourning the loss of swamp pop legend G. G. Shinn, who died Tuesday after a long illness. A singer and trumpet player for more than 50 years, Shinn performed with the Fabulous Boogie Kings, TSC Trucking Company, Roller Coasters, Hot Damn Band and Chase. RIP (ref:www.theadvertiser.com/story/news/2018/08/07/singer-gg-shinn-dies/929503002/ )
Simply beautiful comment. Only recently I bought in Japan 'Ennea' signed by Bill in 1972. Hard to believe he was dead only 2 years later. It has been framed and it's hanging on the wall in my music studio. Absolutely amazing band...you were so lucky, you saw them live.
@@tomrott5333 1971. I heard GET IT ON on the WLS AM radio. Chicago. I was 8. My cousin played trombone at South Shore H. S. Huge fan of Tower Of Power, Ides Of March, Blood Sweat & Years, CHICAGO...CHASE. I heard ENNEA in 1972. Scared the heck outta me & excited me all at once, Chase played their final live show at FACES! on Chicagos' North Side. Then...tragedy struck. Just like Otis & Buddy Holly.
I loved them. Fantastic band. They died two years later near the town I grew up in southwestern Minnesota. They died in a plane crash in Iowa. The news showed their instruments in the crash. Chase played with the best, with Maynard Fergusson and Don Ellis. What a terrible loss
They did a concert in my hometown of Athol Ma not too long before the plane crash that we used as a fund raiser for the high school band. Bill did a workshop for any of the high school trumpet players in the area that wanted to come. It was as awesome experience. The guy was so gracious to all of us in sharing his tips on playing. I was on the stage crew for the concert and hey guys were all so polite and appreciative.

I heard this band just before the plane crash. The trumpets weren't even miked, and they knocked me into the next decade. Probably the best trumpet section I've ever heard.
I knew Bill And all the Chase members. Was a copilot on his DC 3 Airplane we flew them to many many concerts. Fortunately was not on board April 9, 1974. was that Florence SC March 1973 where nobody showed up and the newspaper reviewer chastised the townsfolk for choosing TV over the Chase concert...as he should :)
I got to play with G.G. Shin in 2008 at the ITG in Banff for a Chase tribute concert. I know it was a little controversial at the time that Jens asked me to play in the section, because I was (obviously) not playing in the original band. The local rhythm section had completely underestimated the complexity of the music, and it was a challenge to keep this thing together, to say the least. And one of my jobs was to look after G.G. and his wife during the week. G.G. was almost 70 that week, and he sounded exactly the same as he did in 1972. He would look at me to know when to sing, but he remembered the lyrics of every song in the book. He was a trumpeter as well, and he thoroughly enjoyed dozens of trumpet concerts that week. A very nice person, and what a singer.
GG Shin and the Boogie Kings. Remember them well from Lake Charles, Texas Pelican Club. Blue Eyed soul at its finest. He had a great voice, great soul and loved people.
I saw these guys practice on my brothers farm in South Africa (he was the sound engineer on their South African tour). Blew my mind and changed my life.
Chase played a concert at my high school in Arkansas not long before he died. Great concert, was supposed to be a fundraiser for the HS band but lost money.
Only recently I bought in Japan 'Ennea' signed by Bill in 1972. Hard to believe he was dead only 2 years later. It has been framed and it's hanging on the wall in my music studio. Absolutely amazing band...only 3 albums.
FYI - GG Shin, singing Lead at the time is still performing Today at 72 in Lafayette LA... Still hitting all the notes. Every One! Love Chase and Love GG.
This is decent material. Never seen, heard this before. Bill Chase certainly was a great trumpet player, showman, with funky jazzy tunes. We appreciate the post!! Many thanks.
RIP. He died in (close to) Jackson Minnesota which is where my mother grew up and graduated from High School. I received every one of their CD's from his manager after I had ordered two CD's and they were out of print....had thought was an internet rip-off when I received a box with a bunch of CD's and a personal note apologizing and explaining who he was. Was VERY cool.
That was great! Just like I remember their concerts from '71 and '72. The recorded versions don't show the musicianship and creativity that we heard live and see in this video. Thanks.
This band was phonomial I listened to them on 8 track. Truly remarkable sound and band. Wish they still made music paved a way for other bands and we know who they are. RIP really enjoyed this group of musicians.
first Chase track I ever heard was "Swanee", after purchasing Ennea just based on the cover. (still one of the great band portraits). Hooked immediately. Ennea is still my favorite brass-rock album. Only one cut from the "Zeus" suite made it into the setlist of this gig..too bad.
yep, that was Bill and the band in full flow...I regret not having seen a live gig by these cats....man they are so on it in this gig....I mean what do the young bunch call this.. sick :)

I had a chance to see them back in the 70's at Ferris State Univ. Bill Root our Band Director said that its was mandatory that the brass section go and see the concert. What a magnificent show Mr. Chase and crew put on. Unbelievable that most of the brass didn't even read music!
I too attended that show! Unfortunately, as a 12 year old with sensitive ears, had to leave at intermission having held my hands over my ears the entire time. My ears ached for days!

How would you like it to be a trumpeter following Chase’s set. I had very good chops but after my band members heard Chase they busted my balls saying “What’s wrong you, why don’t you play notes like that?

Times have changed. Back then, you could have great tunes, great arrangements, make unusual instrumentation choices, and still gain a following. If major labels still existed in this era, these guys probably wouldn't get heard, let alone signed.
+jimflys2 Been a trumpet player all my life, and never heard of a tripple C. Grand C is 2 Cs above the staff. I used to have a solid grand C, and had friends who had G's above grand C, but never heard a triple C before.
Jason Lindgren There are those who can get to triple C and beyond. I believe Cat Anderson could hit them, the late Bud Brisbois, Scott Englebright among others. Bill Chase while a really solid beast of a player wasn't in the triple C club.
I remember these guys well, I was a freshman in H/S when Bill died but I was a musician and had been listening to them them for a few years ---These were real musicians --Unlike the Crap that is being produced now. ---I continued my musical education & preformed professionally for 30 years. I played Jazz , Blues & R&B--these guys were one of my main influences-along with Wilson Pickett and many others
I was 13 when the plane crash occurred but didn't find out till much, much later. Earlier this month I came across some online info on Bill which mentioned the crash took place on the day Richard Nixon resigned from office.
Maybe I`m wrong but I always thought Chicago leaned more towards rock and Chase a bit more towards Jazz and maybe that`s why the former was more popular than the latter; that aside from te fact that Chicago lasted longer.

Great !
First song is a contest which gig they play the fastest. My word.
R.I.P Ted Piercefield.
WOW, WHAT A LOSS 40 YEARS AGO YESTERDAY !!!
To me, Chase is a rock band where the trumpets take the place of the guitars for the most part.

Not because of the ability, it is because of the glory.
That, he cannot share.
Very Cool...
Gotta love an echoplex.

特に G.G.SHINN が歌う "Get It On" は超貴重映像。東京12ch は、当時ウドーのロックエクスプロージョンシリーズをこうして番組化していました。特に、冒頭の "Open Up Wide" で、トランペット音量とオシロスコープをダブらせる映像はなかなかのアイディアです。

It is, just not this exact entrance. Killer!
Then, I`ve been unlucky because I`ve not been able to find it but I`ll keep trying.
@@trumpetg1 It was available at one point??!
Is there a way to clean this up it's a shame that someone let this happen to this video if it was film it would probably be a lot better
He is a God. No one - including Maynard Ferguson - comes anywhere even remotely close to him.
Aw, I don't know about that! He was drastically influenced by Maynard.
CaseModVideos Loved them both and still do....they were both extra terrestrials who came down and had the best blow possible...
CaseModVideos Maynard could out do him when he was young. Maynard could go up to a triple C and had power up there.
CaseModVideos Kudos to Chase. Love his style and power. Maynard Ferguson was an octave better than Mr. Chase. Compare age to age. No brainer.
Maynard had way more power in the higher range, Bill was awesome but Maynard can't be touched, there's only a handful of players today that can come close.

thank goodness for the digital age and this could be saved before it got completely worn out from watching over and over! :-)
...and so is Ted Piercefield!
Is he the one singing Handbags?
Arguably the best lead ever. I loved Ferguson, but had Chase led a long life he would have surpassed Maynard in totalitarity.
I think the face of rock would have changed dramatically. What a tragedy.
Bill didn't have the benefit of modern technology. What a beast.
I don't know what you mean about modern technology, I would call his Schilke B6L with the beryllium bell modern!
I had a B6L Back in the Day But used a Bach Horn Stradivarius High Notes were Easy compared to Using a C7
👍❗👍
Didn't Terry Richards sing 'So many people'? Jerry Van Blair sang one song...?
Terry sang it and recorded it in 1971 but was sacked 1/2 way through the recording of ENNEA in San Francisco

JJ Martin Thanks for that information. I was wondering why Terry left so early.
T GOD gives gifts. Some enlarge their gifts enough to be recognized .
The difference is pride. Or Lucifer gets jealous . Not for the technique , but the glory.
He rips them. So lesson. Give glory to God. Always t all times. Find the non- envioux God.
- The true G8d. Look for Him. Jesus lived a perfect life. Non of the others did.Researth Lord Jesus .!
Times have changed. Back then, you could have great tunes, great arrangements, make unusual instrumentation choices, and still gain a following. If major labels still existed in this era, these guys probably wouldn't get heard, let alone signed.
+Modes9 It's a shame how 'manufactured' it has become.
This piece was a real bitch for the drummer. Hear how he regroups, fairly successfully, at 3:33.
Jimi Hendrix on the trumpet?
No, il figlio di Maynard Ferguson.
hi
Triple C on that beginning?
Bill had a solid dub-C, no triples
+jimflys2 Been a trumpet player all my life, and never heard of a tripple C. Grand C is 2 Cs above the staff. I used to have a solid grand C, and had friends who had G's above grand C, but never heard a triple C before.
Jason Lindgren There are those who can get to triple C and beyond. I believe Cat Anderson could hit them, the late Bud Brisbois, Scott Englebright among others. Bill Chase while a really solid beast of a player wasn't in the triple C club.
+trumpetvids That's a squeak, not a note. I challenge anyone to produce a video of a meaningful triple C.
Thomas Power "Meaningful" is highly subjective. Not the most melodic range of the instrument of course but some can get up there.
Earlier this month I came across some online info on Bill which mentioned the crash took place on the day Richard Nixon resigned from office.
he had a heck of a diaphragm
Is this Terry Richards singing ??
Let Me Ref raze That The Guy in Purple with a Brown Vest or the Other Guy in Glad Rags color full Shirt Both are Excellent !!!
No, this is GG Shin who replaced Terry Richards as the lead singer...
Man I always liked Chicago and still do of course. But Chase jizzes all over them!
Maybe I`m wrong but I always thought Chicago leaned more towards rock and Chase a bit more towards Jazz and maybe that`s why the former was more popular than the latter; that aside from te fact that Chicago lasted longer.
Chicago didn't get killed in a plane crash.
Нерастиражированный трубач.👍🎺
