Not gonna argue. I first heard this song at age 12 on a flight from Philly to LAX with my parents, and it brings back memories of that trip for me. I love the original, and I love this cover. Brilliant!

This is one of those rare times a cover of a classic, like Californa Dreamin by the Mamas & The Poppas that really gets taken to a whole new level - like this Beach Boys version - This is phenomenal in its rich production with a complex interwoven mix of guitar, sax (both also just soared in their solos) and the stellar harmonies of vocals by a band that carved it's unique harmonic sound into Platinum success. I love its "serious tone" - it's like when you smoke a joint and listen to music that makes you contemplative - it's daydreaming that takes flight.... I'm flying with this! One of the best covers I've ever heard!
Sir--------that Rickenbacker 370 12 string is by Roger McGuinn.; Carl played the older 360 model , the same one George Harrison played. ----------The Sax is done by Steve Douglas, one of the legendary LA musicians , " The Wrecking Crew " . Terry Melcher ---------yes, THAT Terry Melcher--------produced, & had the idea for the Rickenbacker 370 . Bruce Johnston & Carl Wilson arranged vocals, & yes, that Bruce hitting the high notes , especially at the end. The original idea was for the ending to be like " God Only Knows", a sort of ' in the round " harmony ending. But Melcher disagreed, & wanted a more bare, instrumental ending, & with only one fading voice, that of Bruce. After much disagreement, Melcher Prevailed. Personally, I would love to have heard what the the other ending would have sounded like. Both John & Michelle Phillips, who co-wrote the sing, had to give approval , which they did immediately. And, both appear in the official video. FINALLY----------BW had noting at all, to do with this. NADA. That's because, in '86, he was under the total control of Landy , who demanded co-producer credit, & 25% of all profits . Shows what a greedy asshole he had become, with BW. It was at the very last minute, that BW showed up for the " Solid Gold " appearance. it is all too plain, that he is both unhappy, & bored, by the whole thing. Sad-----too sad. And, by this time, the group was so fed up with BW & Landy, & who could blame them ? -----------MJL, 76 y/o a lifetime fan
My father bought the "Made in USA" Beach Boys album on cassette. When I would ride with him, I 'd always put this tape in and FFWD it to the end of the tape where this song was and play it real loud! Love the guitars and sax in it! The Beach Boys were in their 40's when they recorded this and still sounded like teenagers!
This is all the Beach Boy's terrific harmony and that 12 string Rickenbacker "Jingle Jangle" guitar of Roger McGuinn (The Byrds) that gives this a beautiful '60's touch.
@@wisemasterbuilder This should blow your mind. The lyrics are "got down on my knees and pretend to pray". Don't believe me? Look 'em up. That slight change really changes the meaning of the song. Don'tcha think?

I never knew they covered this song, and I didn't expect it to be good (despite my love of the Beach Boys), but wow, this is amazing. It's definitely getting slotted into my iTunes right alongside the Mama and Papas original.
Im slightly shocked. Maybe you should go listen to some more of The Beach Boys. They were regarded as a top band throughout the world in the 1960's. The band were heavily influenced by Californian lifestyle, and were masters at harmonising their vocals. I think that is why this song works so well for them.

The Beach boys know how to cover songs and make them outstanding as if it was their own song! their version of the Mama's ans Papa's song "Do you wanna dance" with Dennis Wilson on lead vocals is another example of this.
+katakisLives Sir, THE irony is that it was only at John's insistence that the guys got together to do this. They respected the original version, & it took a lot of work to pull this off.
