Wow! I am in awe! I just posted a video to my channel about how I turn a honey dipper in under five minutes. You just did it all with a skew! True skill takes many years or decades of work. You have it!
Once again---some kinda sweet work--You got me thinking you never make a "boo-boo"-- seems like I always make a goof-up especially when trying to master that old skew
I am a new turner and enjoy using my Skew for most turning,, I am a member of a local wood turning club and they are telling me to always use one of the gouges,,,,thanks for the video
Always enjoy watching your projects. Your skew skills continue to impress me. I love my turning tools but I have to say I have yet to get to this level with a skew.
Wow! Fantastic!!That is a beautiful shaped honey dipper and a fantastic idea for practicing with the skew, although you make it look to easy! ! I need to get back to my shop and practice this!
You Sir are BADASSS at the skew!!! I am impressed. I'm new to this but you show the possibility of the skew and I am so going to get as good as you.... Subscribed
I can see it happening, but I still can't see how he does it, it is like magic, the internal shape is revealed like opening a package. It looks so simple - it is a high art form.🏆
That's impressive! Both how much wood you're able to take off at once, and how you didn't even have to stop the lathe and saw off the ends! :) I'm assuming you sanded the ends after removing it, but still, it wouldn't have been much! :)
The skew, unlike the roughing gouge seems to just work naturally for me. I can see that the roughing and bowl gouges are beefer, but they just don't seem to like to cut for me.
I want to learn/practice untill I can do it like you, at the moment I take at least 20 minutes to make a honey dipper....what rpm does your lathe run at for this type of project? Excellent work and beautiful design.
hey ive been watching a lot of your skew videos. Wondering how high above the centers you're putting your tool rest? its hard to grasp from the videos but it looks like you're taking cuts from almost on top instead of close to center? im young and kind of new to turning, and this interests me. thanks
I'm a turning noob, and your skill with the skew is beautiful to watch. Can you talk about the grind you use on your chisel, and what the advantages of it are? Looks like an oval blade with a nearly straight across grind (so not really a heavy 'skew') - what bevel angle do you prefer? Thanks in advance, and thanks for putting these videos out, they're enlightening.
No It's an Ashley Iles standard flat skew with a slightly less than normal angle and a longer bevel. I don't know the angles I have never measured them and always grind freehand to what looks right. Sorry I can't help more. Advantages are cuts cleaner and can be more aggressive and more versatile.
The skew is strong with this one ;).
It's always a pleasure to see how a master makes it look so easy.
Pete
Thank you
Thanks so much for another great video. I already tried to use a skew only, and it was a fail. You make it look so easy. Great Job.
Thank you
Beautiful to watch the wood just melt away..newbie here, so just enjoying the technique..and tool has to be sharp!!
Thank you I’m pleased you enjoyed it.
You make it look so easy. I've only been in wood work for 2 years and I'm amazed by you.
Thank you
Never seen a skew chisel used so confidently - Great work !
Thank you
Hi, your skew work reflects the 35yrs you have been doing this great work. I could watch it all day :)
Thank You

Thank you for your kind comments Nick
Once again---some kinda sweet work--You got me thinking you never make a "boo-boo"-- seems like I always make a goof-up especially when trying to master that old skew
Thanks Tim, I still make the odd 'boo-boo' just not very often
I am a new turner and enjoy using my Skew for most turning,, I am a member of a local wood turning club and they are telling me to always use one of the gouges,,,,thanks for the video
Thank you, learn the Skew it’s the best way and you will not regret it.
It is so nice to see someone who knows what he is doing. I am sick of watching "woodturners" mauling wood with gouges and scrapers.
Thank you
Always enjoy watching your projects. Your skew skills continue to impress me. I love my turning tools but I have to say I have yet to get to this level with a skew.
Thank You Todd, keep practicing and you never know you could reach this level.
you are great !! i really like the way that you use the Skew chisel !!! keep doing the great job !! thanks for sharing !!!
Thank you for your comments they are appreciated
Beautiful to watch your skill. Thank you.

What an artist! Well done.
Thank you
Oh man. That skew work makes me crazy. Should start to practice that.
Thank you
Masterful! An inspiration. I am a relatively new turner and have taken on the challenge to learn the skew. Many thanks!
Thank you, I hope you enjoy the skew
RIGHT ....send me your address...i need to come and have a pint and talk lathes 😂😂😂😂
Absolutely an amazing craftsman
Thank you

Thank You, Mine too
Leigh Stevens hav

Once again your skew work is amazing. Cheers, Jim.
Thanks Jim
You my friend are a micro surgeon with that skew chisel!
Thank you
Amazing how you use the skew 👏👏👏👏👏
Thank you

Thank you, yes a very light sanding is required
Crazy talented turner! Nicely done! I have to now master the skew, it kinda scares me...
Thank you and it’s well worth learning

Hi Steve,
You are the Bees Knees. :-)
Best
Paul
Thank you :)
Beautiful work master!
Thank You
I can not make cuts like that. The amount of wood you are taking off in a pass and peeling cuts forget it.
Nicely done Sir!
Thanks Erik
Brilliant Steve...as always mate :)
Cheers
Mike
THanks Mike
Masterful.
Thank you
Not your first honey dipper I assume! Excellent video.
Thank you Matt, not my first but I don’t make many.
great skill!
Thank You

Thank you, I turn these at around 1450
@@woodturner21 thanks.
That is a beautiful shape of the piece. what would be the best varnish? Best from Iceland, Júlíus
I don't varnish Honey dippers as they are meant to be left in honey, but if you want to finish a mineral oil would be fine.
I am unable to do this. But my skew is a good paint can opener.
It just takes practice
I recon you’ve turned a couple of those before.
Only a few they are not a big seller due to the CNC variety is widely available
well I think that I need to go and make a honey dipper :-)
It shouldn't take you long Ed.
how much of price of that honey dipper???
Great skew as always!
Thanks Paul
Wow.
Thank you
I keep trying to use the skew but progress is slow.. I so want to be this good...
It’s just lots of practice and you well get the feel for it.
Very nice. I think you have done that before.
Thank you I have been full time pro for 38 years

The rest is slightly above centre and I cut towards the top of the wood. This enables you to rub the bevel easily.
What wood and finish did you use? Great job btw
Thanks, it's beech and I don't finish honey dippers as they are supposed to be left in the honey.
woodturner21 sure thanks.
Is that a Lacer or Batty skew? Stunning!
No It's an Ashley Iles standard skew with my grind.

اجكد احبها ياربي واجكد حلوه
May I know what type of wood is that?
Beech
@@woodturner21 We don't have that in Malaysia.
What are the angles with which your skew chisel sharpens?
I don't measure them I just grind freehand, but the included bevel is around 30 degrees. and the skew approx. 75 degrees
woodturner21 muchas gracias por la atención maestro.
Que madeira é esta
Thank you
I think you must have invented the skew. Great video.
Thank you I am not quite that old lol.
