@@CptPhilippnes the thing is that from what I can tell from my playtime is that the game littarly have coded airship and regular ship the same way the have the same voice line banks that been ship one. another thing that trips me from time and that is any pilot voice bank is used for both friendly and hostile. so I heard a line utter by a enemy pilot and the text was red and said federation pilot. next mission same exact line but the one talking was a Independent pilot and the line was blue for friendly.
Fun fact: In your first encounter with Crimson at Yellowstone it's actually possible to damage one of them enough that Crimson backs off and the mission will end in a different way. It doesn't seem to effect the story, but it's quite cool.

Yeah it's possible but it's not very efficient at all, since there are no checkpoints and you can just destroy the extractors from above if you fly diagonally and fire two missiles at the correct altitude.

It seems that he was actually having a bit of fun during that last boss, the only issue being his final hidden healthbar, and the excessive orange tint given to literally EVERYTHING.
I was clenching myself when he flew underneath the ball attack almost skimming the ground. If he had finished on the first playthrough it would have been an outright cinematic end.

I haven't even gotten to play this game yet and all I needed to hear was "arcade flyer" with a score like this one. I knew when the review spoke about the best track later that Showdown was coming, and I was not disappointed. You've definitely made waves with this one. I hope this isn't your last game soundtrack, even if other media approaches you for work. We'd be drastically worse off for it.

As someone who hasn't played the game, I agree with Rimmy on at least one thing. It is immensely satisfying hearing a character just go off on the recurring villain who seems to believe that the heroes keep fighting them for some deep philosophical reason or because they share his bizarre emotional investment in their pointless rivalry. Just having a character call out the villain's delusion that the heroes give a darn about him and aren't just fighting him because he keeps seeking them out and harassing them while they're trying to do anything. I like Crimson's little "Of course" when Diplomat starts ranting at him because it honestly makes him sound kind of pathetic, like he physically can't comprehend the idea that the team only ever fought him to begin with because they're mercenaries and took a job that happened to put them against him. I can't really think of any story other where that happens. We're just supposed to assume that on some level the hero likes fighting the villain as much as the villain likes fighting them and that's why they keep fighting, not because their respective goals and ideologies put them against each other, but because they derive some personal fulfillment out of it. Hearing a protagonist just get fed up and tell them to knock it off with all their pseudo-intellectual delusional ramblings about how they're all destined to do this dance forever almost makes me want to buy this game just for that moment.

The second calamity event actually wasn't Crimson's doing though, it was just The Federation employing Scorched Earth tactics. The final level Cordium event is the one that Crimson triggers personally, out of his vendetta against Monarch. More of a madlad than a chad.

...it really wouldn't do jackshit to an aircraft you know. And the plasma is produced at the _gun_ because a very real issue with railguns is that the projectile is literally trying to spot weld itself to the conductor rails, which duly get part of their surface fucking vaporized (and thrown out of the barrel in a pretty decent approximation of a muzzle blast). As you might imagine this gives the barrels some real endurance problems and is one of those niggling engineering headaches being worked on. (Coilguns skip this because the projectile isn't in direct contact with the coil but have other shortcomings, notably they're not as efficient.)
@@broadbandislife Plasma is basically just superheated matter, doesn't matter if it's a solid, liquid or gases. One way to heat something up is with a shit-ton of friction. Which theoretically would be possible with a railgun since the rounds would be travelling at speeds in excess of Mach 7 (7 times the speed of sound). That results in a shit-ton of friction from the round pushing the air infront of it out of it's way as it travels on it's way to a target. In reality this plasma trail, if present at all, would be pretty short and would dissipate quickly behind the railgun round. But unlike in this game, it would be effectively impossible to dodge a railgun shot from any range under 100km since the shots travel so fast that by the time you see the railgun fire at you, you simply won't have enough time to get out of the round's path and if you're close enough, by the time you see the railgun fire, you've already been hit.

That would be something with a very high density like Tungsten. Pretty sure that was the material stated to be used to make the projectiles that would have been put in orbit as part of the scrapped "THOR" / "Rods from god" program, which had a theoretical impact velocity of Mach 20. I accept that I'm dumb, but considering that program was a serious proposal for a time, I think it's safe to assume the people behind that program were onto something there.

Yeah I'm just annoyed that hitting the extractor itself doesn't clear a path. But that's just a small joke in a greater mission. They remove Hanzawa from anything but merc mode so that mission should be more bearable, it's just one of the least interesting. Still better than Kings tho
One thing about the extractors I wanna mention. There are gaps in the top that you can fire through as well. Though it does take a bit of practice, it feels cool to do.

Also, the “fly into tunnel, shoot target, fly out” test is actually in Stepping Stone - those containers in the grey areas on the minimap are inside tunnels that you need to fly through to attack them. EDIT: also, when I did Machine of the Mantle, I actually exploited how, when you’re just above stall speed, your horizontal velocity goes basically to zero, letting me effectively descend vertically just in front of the end of the extractor housing until I had a clear shot with missiles. In that same mission, it’s also possible to shoot down (or, at least, almost shoot down) a member of Crimson Team, which makes them fuck off and has everyone else calling you an absolute madlad.
I'm pretty sure you can shoot down all of crimson in the first encounter and the rest of hitman questions monarchs sanity as he is usually pretty relaxed with how he flies
@@DepressedCrow nah, they pull a disappearing act after one of them gets badly damaged - mostly because it flips the mission to complete, which deletes anything still on the map.
The final fight against Crimson reminds me of those boss fights in those Shmup games or in Touhou. Just having to deal with bullet hell and staying alive while you chip away at their health.

I had the opposite reaction to the end boss fight on Hard, I loved it. To me it was a marvelous culmination of everything you'd learned throughout the campaign combined with a bit of overkill bullet hell. Crimson 1's health bar disappearing made sense to me, as I interpreted it as he was now just like any other plane that you could down in 2-3 hits, given the musical cues. Haven't played the ending on Mercenary yet though, my opinion about it may change after that. Loved your review!

I actually have flown through the tunnel to destroy the extractor. The trick is to roll the aircraft as you go past the extractor so you don't hit it.
You can also skim the very top of the tunnel which is just high enough that you don't take damage from the heat.

In reference to the fact that you can actually rebind the controls. Unlike AC7 on PC, which limits you to preset M+KB controls, preset controller controls, or preset controls on one of the cheapest and least versatile HOTAS on the market: the Thrustmaster HOTAS X/One/4.
Imma be so sad if AC8 comes to PC without customizable controls or native support for multiple HOTAS'.

It seems that he was actually having a bit of fun during that last boss, the only issue being his final hidden healthbar, and the excessive orange tint given to literally EVERYTHING.
I was clenching myself when he flew underneath the ball attack almost skimming the ground. If he had finished on the first playthrough it would have been an outright cinematic end.

I've been listening to "Peacekeeper II" and "Coronation" on repeat lately, you did an incredible job.
I haven't even gotten to play this game yet and all I needed to hear was "arcade flyer" with a score like this one. I knew when the review spoke about the best track later that Showdown was coming, and I was not disappointed.
You've definitely made waves with this one. I hope this isn't your last game soundtrack, even if other media approaches you for work. We'd be drastically worse off for it.

Rimmy has a pretty decent 40k following.
As someone who hasn't played the game, I agree with Rimmy on at least one thing. It is immensely satisfying hearing a character just go off on the recurring villain who seems to believe that the heroes keep fighting them for some deep philosophical reason or because they share his bizarre emotional investment in their pointless rivalry. Just having a character call out the villain's delusion that the heroes give a darn about him and aren't just fighting him because he keeps seeking them out and harassing them while they're trying to do anything. I like Crimson's little "Of course" when Diplomat starts ranting at him because it honestly makes him sound kind of pathetic, like he physically can't comprehend the idea that the team only ever fought him to begin with because they're mercenaries and took a job that happened to put them against him. I can't really think of any story other where that happens. We're just supposed to assume that on some level the hero likes fighting the villain as much as the villain likes fighting them and that's why they keep fighting, not because their respective goals and ideologies put them against each other, but because they derive some personal fulfillment out of it. Hearing a protagonist just get fed up and tell them to knock it off with all their pseudo-intellectual delusional ramblings about how they're all destined to do this dance forever almost makes me want to buy this game just for that moment.

that "laser" from the railguns is probably plasma trails
...it really wouldn't do jackshit to an aircraft you know. And the plasma is produced at the _gun_ because a very real issue with railguns is that the projectile is literally trying to spot weld itself to the conductor rails, which duly get part of their surface fucking vaporized (and thrown out of the barrel in a pretty decent approximation of a muzzle blast).
As you might imagine this gives the barrels some real endurance problems and is one of those niggling engineering headaches being worked on. (Coilguns skip this because the projectile isn't in direct contact with the coil but have other shortcomings, notably they're not as efficient.)

@@broadbandislife Plasma is basically just superheated matter, doesn't matter if it's a solid, liquid or gases. One way to heat something up is with a shit-ton of friction. Which theoretically would be possible with a railgun since the rounds would be travelling at speeds in excess of Mach 7 (7 times the speed of sound). That results in a shit-ton of friction from the round pushing the air infront of it out of it's way as it travels on it's way to a target. In reality this plasma trail, if present at all, would be pretty short and would dissipate quickly behind the railgun round. But unlike in this game, it would be effectively impossible to dodge a railgun shot from any range under 100km since the shots travel so fast that by the time you see the railgun fire at you, you simply won't have enough time to get out of the round's path and if you're close enough, by the time you see the railgun fire, you've already been hit.

On the point about atmospheric drag, you may well be right. I never claimed to be an expert on the subject. I'm just a fox after all. Thus why I used the word "theoretically". Although the projectile material would be a fairly simple matter assuming you have the ability to machine it. That would be something with a very high density like Tungsten. Pretty sure that was the material stated to be used to make the projectiles that would have been put in orbit as part of the scrapped "THOR" / "Rods from god" program, which had a theoretical impact velocity of Mach 20. I accept that I'm dumb, but considering that program was a serious proposal for a time, I think it's safe to assume the people behind that program were onto something there.

Yeah I'm just annoyed that hitting the extractor itself doesn't clear a path. But that's just a small joke in a greater mission. They remove Hanzawa from anything but merc mode so that mission should be more bearable, it's just one of the least interesting. Still better than Kings tho
One thing about the extractors I wanna mention. There are gaps in the top that you can fire through as well. Though it does take a bit of practice, it feels cool to do.

Also, the “fly into tunnel, shoot target, fly out” test is actually in Stepping Stone - those containers in the grey areas on the minimap are inside tunnels that you need to fly through to attack them.
EDIT: also, when I did Machine of the Mantle, I actually exploited how, when you’re just above stall speed, your horizontal velocity goes basically to zero, letting me effectively descend vertically just in front of the end of the extractor housing until I had a clear shot with missiles.
In that same mission, it’s also possible to shoot down (or, at least, almost shoot down) a member of Crimson Team, which makes them fuck off and has everyone else calling you an absolute madlad.
I'm pretty sure you can shoot down all of crimson in the first encounter and the rest of hitman questions monarchs sanity as he is usually pretty relaxed with how he flies

I had the opposite reaction to the end boss fight on Hard, I loved it. To me it was a marvelous culmination of everything you'd learned throughout the campaign combined with a bit of overkill bullet hell. Crimson 1's health bar disappearing made sense to me, as I interpreted it as he was now just like any other plane that you could down in 2-3 hits, given the musical cues. Haven't played the ending on Mercenary yet though, my opinion about it may change after that. Loved your review!
