Can you use a folding knife as a survival knife? Part two. I make survival weapons.

- I am not recommending a folding knife as a survival knife, just saying its possible. I am tired of people with no practical experience overthinking everything and coming up with 'nanny knows best advice'about folding knife dangers which I believe are very small. Time for some myth busting!
LINK TO PART THREE: • Can you use a folding ...
Hi Vinnie, you are humble when you say you are not a bush crafter.
Thanks very much. I mean I don't want to identify with some of the silly stuff I see on RUclips 🙂🙂
I was JUST thinking "he should make a wedge for that split" and sure enough....
Great minds think alike?
Sure, that sounds better than "Lucky guess"!
"The proof of the pudding is in the eating there of" exactly! Even that saying is often mis stated as "the proof is in the pudding", which makes no sense. You are a very smart man! You were recommended to me by Tobias Gibson of Knife Chats With Tobias.
Thank you very much. I like Tobias and his channel. He is very knowledgeable. I see you have videos too. I will be having a look at them
Myth busted!
Awesome video and thumbs up from Western Canada!
Man, I would love to see Western Canada. I think you guys get a lot of rain like us Paddies. Am I right?
vinniesdayoff depends on the province and the area within actually. Here in Alberta we are pretty dry compared to costal British Columbia although we have some areas that get tons of rain. A lot of skag swamp in my area.
I don’t understand how you don’t have more subscribers. Amazing content. Can’t knock the humble pocketknife if you have a good brain. You’re making me miss archery. Maybe I’ll make a bow here soon. Apparently our tamarack trees were decent for bow wood, and was used by the aboriginals. I’m liking your shelter. A wood stove or some lanterns would make it cozy up here in the winter. You’ve got my head working on ideas for my area. Great channel. Take care.
I am not singing from the right hymn book Aaron! I am like the prophet crying out in the wilderness :-) I am very happy with how RUclips is going for me. I have gotten to know a gang of very sound people from all over the world and to be honest, interacting with them is what keeps me going on RUclips.
I swear...that little knife of his is a damned LIGHT SABRE. I have no idea who made it or what steel it is or who shrpened it to what angle....but DAMN.....that thing is dangerous!
RESPECT !
It's really just using some simple techniques that my dad showed me when I was a small boy.
That's one tough little knife! I was a bit worried at the amount of force you were applying to it.
Hello Ronnie and thanks for your comment. It's an old but very good little knife. It has taken over twenty five years of that treatment!
Great video Vinnie! The way you built your big rock club is fabulous.
Every cave man needs a big rock club Mary ☺
I like to check everyday to see if there are new videos up,,, I miss the days when I could be in the woods for days at a time, I'm disabled now and we RV travel full time, but I still love to teach these skills to my Kids as much as a can,
I'm sorry to hear that Jacob but it is great to get your kids interested in the outdoors. We had a caravan when our kids were young and we had some really good times. This covid mess has impacted everything. I work in a job where I have a high risk of catching it so I was trying hard not to bring it home. It distracts you from everything else. However I am now vaccinated so hopefully I can get back into making videos
Cracking video. I've always found the materialist attitude of 'bushcraft' to be a bit ironic, two of the best knives I've owned came from a hardware store, a cheap hultafors tradesman's knife for rough work and a 3" opinel for prepping pigeons, together they cost £15ish. Look forward to more videos. Cheers
Thanks very much Richard. Its big business and we are being sold a product. Also guys like to make what they do seem impressive and mysterious when it plainly is not. I have been using both of your knives for many years and they are excellent. Thanks for your kind comment.
Vinnie my friend , I love just hanging out with.
I aint no survival expert either but we have great common sense!
Hello CB. Common sense is sadly missing on RUclips methinks. Hello from Ireland and nice to meet you ☺👍
Ive' watched this video series multiple time with my son, great video..
I thank both you and your son Jacob. Much appreciated 👍
First thing I would make in a survival situation wouldn't be a weapon, I would concentrate on traps for fish and game first. But you proved your point perfectly.
You are right for sure Robert. I'm just trying to make the point that so many RUclips experts, whose knowledge seems to come only from RUclips with no experience of their own, are wrong when they say you cannot make a shelter, do bushcraft or complete survival tasks etc with a folder. Obviously, with a little use of the old grey matter, you can.
All power to you mate, putting the armchair survivalists to the sword, great to see dogs out and about. Thanks again for sharing. All the best from Scotland. Garry
No bother Garry. All the best from your fellow Gaels in Ireland.
another good example of using the knife for survival purposes mate. A fixed blade knife would've done it quicker but you proved your point! :) nice videos and actually quite refreshing to watch... All the other channels only do expensive fixed blades reviews, so this is a nice change of scenery :) keep up the great work ;)
Thank you very much Michiel. I got tired of listening to those other channels, they all seem to sing from the same hymn book :-). I have used different types of knives all my life, it is a bit of an obsession with me. I also used them professionally as I was a butcher for some years when I was younger. If you use a little technique and don't over strain a folder by doing something stupid with it, it will do a great deal of work for you. I also got tired of listening to grown men say that a folder will close on your hand when back in the day every boy had one and managed very well. Much of what I see on RUclips with regard to knives leaves me scratching my head in bewilderment! Thank you for watching 👍 😀
You are welcome!
I agree. In my area large knives are illegal for EDC. I use a three inch lockback and Swiss army knives perfectly legal. They work just fine.
I really enjoy these videos Vinnie. Thanks
You are very welcome Billy, thank you!
Damn my granda wasn't lying when he said barber knives where the best, surprised that little knife could undertake such a big task but I suppose that's the point you were trying to make, great video :)
Thanks David. I had also heard about Barber knives growing up and always wanted one. I bought this one over twenty five years ago at a car boot sale for two pounds and fifty pence. Best investment I ever made. Looking out for another now.
Wow - interesting with what can be done with a folding knife with patience!
Thank you very much
....and SKILL. Skill means so much.
a good little tip for arrowmaking is heat the point of your arrow over a fire it tightens the grain on the hazel making it very hard and also dipping the point in melted pine pitch and leave to cool is a great help for keeping a point on it. i took up flintknapping recently so ill be making stone arrowheads.
Cool. I would love to get my hands on some nice flint and try it myself.
it's quite fun iv a mate here on youtube he's been flintknapping a long time Vision Quest Outdoors he makes stone weapons for hunting and skinning animals there fairly good for skinning you wouldn't believe it.
flint is hard to find though iv found it in peoples yards for decorating like chippings but flint there yellow little chips with black in the centre if ya spot any there good to go i filled two pockets one day and the house owner called me mental haha. No joke
😁😂🤣
@Irish Wanderer
-- I never thought of the pine pitch for a spear/arrowhead -- that's brilliant, that is! :-) A hardened birch tar mix might do well, too, for anyone looking for variations on the theme.
I have some collection of victorinox pocket knives
Compact
Huntsman
Hiker and harvester
I seek for farmer and soldier unfortunately I didn't get.
Really very useful tips your videos
I have the Farmer. I think it is a fine little knife
@@vinniesdayoff3968 I carry one every day, and like it even though it don't have a folding combine harvester on it. That would've been perfect for the thatching in pt1
@@CandidZulu A folding combine harvester....Vinnie strokes his jaw deep in thought
Very cute dogs 👍🖖
you should definitely look into flintknapping if you like survival weapons iv made one or two blades with stones and the cut wood haha!
Thank you ...
You just gave me hope !!!!..... almost in any case scenario when you have to survive like (Zombie apocalipce, Goverment take out streets, Etc) must of the time and must likely you would have some thing like that with you .. Not 10¨inch hunting knife , i´m almost this close to buy a Victorinox Multitool knife .... thank you
I think if the government takes out the streets we may need a bigger knife Braulio!
vinniesdayoff either way... you proved your point using common sense, patience, good steel and tecnique. Because must of the time i see the bigger the knife the better... onece a guy was suggesting that having an axe all time with you was better than any knife...... so, i thougth inatead of that a sword would be better... but this is not 14 th century .... any way ... THANK YOU AND POINT PROVED !
Thanks Braulio. I would say that if you think survival = splitting wood like many on RUclips seem to think, an axe or hatchet is the way to go.Thanks again.
Excellent video my brother I really enjoyed watching man keep up the good work
Thanks very much indeed, and thanks for watching. I am glad you enjoyed it.
I reckon I need to have a go at making a bow with one of my slip joints
Great vid once again
Thanks John James. It's a bit tedious. A bigger folder, even, would have helped. Good to hear from you
Great job. Well thought out.
Thank you sir.
Another great video Vinnie
Thanks Peter, we aim to please!
Another good test thank you for sharing
good information. thanks for sharing
Again, thanks for watching Jeremy
Ever get a chance to check out the MKM Malga 6 Vinnie?
I have not unfortunately. Just been looking at it online. Seems a little pricey. I wonder if it is 3 times better than a SAK? The fork would be useful if one was trapped in a room filled with sausages and would allow one to eat their way to freedom 🤔 Have I been watching too many survival videos on RUclips??
I live in US and even though, everyone is worried about bears and mountain lions; for most Americans: ill trained dogs are a bigger problem.
We have a few of them here too and my Jack Russels have had a few near death experiences with German shepherds. A good blackthorn stick is a great help in changing attitudes in aggressive dogs!
Really useful video
Thank you sir
this is great considering i found a load of hazel near me campsite a bow is on the menu.
whos to say bailing twine doesnt do the job hah
Can't beat a big stick
True, true
Do you carry that knife daily? I'm so glad you did these videos with a knife like that and not a SAK.
I did carry it daily for about twenty five years. I decided to retire it in case I lost it. That video was it's swan song. I never really took to SAK's, why are you glad I did not use one ?
vinniesdayoff I have seen tons of videos of people with SAK's doing the Bushcrafter thing.. It was refreshing to see a traditional knife being used and seeing it's capabilities with out tons of extras like the saw and awl etc..Don't get me wrong I love and own alot if SAK's and they are quite useful.. That being said I prefer a traditional.. You did all that with a sheepsfoot blade and some common sense... Keep up the great work..
vinniesdayoff ps what are you carrying now to replace that little gem?
Thanks JH1095. Now that you mention it, you don't see traditional folders being used. Maybe we should change that
Well I got the Case cv to replace it, but the search goes on
Not as pretty as a blackthorn but it'll sure as sin is fun work.
we use juniper here in the us often for primitive arrows, can hazel be fire straightened in the same way? just curious
It can indeed be fire straightened
Just subd
Great video. Sometimes you just have to use your head rather than muscles in a survival situation. Batoning a knife won't save you :) Thanks for posting these videos.
Thank you Sonnet. Sometimes I get cranky! :-)
Absolutely Vinnie. I have learned a lot from your videos. As a matter of fact, I am watching all your videos now. Just out of curiosity, what knife were you using? It doesn't seem to be any Chinese folding knife that i know of. Also, it held up such sharp edge, even after you have used used/abused it so much. That's one hell of a folding knife you have there. Do you think a Swiss Army knife would hold up to the same level of abuse? I carry a swiss knife with me at all times, but I dont know if i would trust it's blade as much. The victorinox steel doesn't seem to hold it's edge for much long.
It is not a Chinese knife. It is a James Barber made knife from England. That company ceased producing knives in 1944 so it is old. I did have to touch up the edge when I cut the rushes for thatch. Rushes are hard on edge even though they appear easy to cut. Even though it is small I find it to be the best knife I have come across. I don't believe I "abused" the knife. I worked it hard but I have used knives all my life and I know what they can do and what they cannot. If you use a tool in a way that will not break it and which it can endure without problems it is not abuse. The Swiss Army knives are well made and should do a lot of work. The blades are not super hard but if you have a way to touch up the edge maybe this is not such a bad thing. I will be trying out a Victorinox knife in the near future. Thank you for watching Sonnet.
Thanks Vinnie. I appreciate your advise. I personally would prefer a bushcraft knife while camping or in the woods, but the odds very low I will have one with me during a crisis. I do carry various EDC and swiss knifes virtually in all my backpacks, and anywhere i go, so the odds are high I will have one with me. That being said, the cheap chinese EDC (box cutters) i have are very soft steel and require fair amount of sharpening, which isn't a big deal as long as i have sharpener with me. I also saw your review on of the Case Trapper knife review. It looks similar to the one you used in the video. The price of the knife ranges anywhere from $100 (154-CM) and $50 for (440) stainless steel. I suppose a regular $50 knife would suffice just as good, albeit would need frequent sharpening. But the benifit of soft steel is it doesn't take much effort to sharpen them. Thank once again for making such informative videos. I really enjoyed and learned a lot from your videos. Keep em coming.
By the way, is the James Barber knife you used in the video really over 80 years old? wow! Just wow. I am speechless! I would baby the heck out of that knife...but thats just me :D
I think against a leopard no one would have a chance when sleeping. 🤔
True, true 🤔🤔
I would Defansaj
Like to ýou in person Vinny
