- In this video we see V/Line passenger trains around Ballarat. Situated in western Victoria, Ballarat is Victoria's second largest regional city with a population with over 107,000 and developed predominantly in the 1850's during the Gold Rush. The city has had a proud railway history with a gorgeous historic 19th century railway station, several railway workshops, and serves as the junction for several rail lines.
We start the video at Ballarat Railway Station which is listed on the Victorian Heritage Register for being of state significance, and is notable for being one of only three train stations in Australia to feature a 19th century train shed. We also visit the adjacent heritage listed Lydiard Street level crossing which was the last level crossing in Victoria to utilise wooden swing gates, which unfortunately is currently closed due to an accident in May 2020.
We also visit the modern Wendouree station which opened in 2009 to take pressure off Ballarat station, and various trackside shots around town, including along Warrenheip Bank which is a 1 in 52 grade just outside of town (known for causing freight trains grief every now and again).

I especially love the Vlocities in half PTV and half MK3 livery and the one in whole MK3 livery!
Warrenheip also used to be a junction until 1995, prior to that, the Ballarat-Warrenheip section was double track. Reinstating the junction would give an extra 6 or 7 km of double track on the Ballarat line, though if the goal is to standardise the Geelong-Mildura line in its entirety..... yeah, that complicates things a bit....
Anyways, will be interesting to see if that proposed Warrenheip park-and-ride station gets built in the future.
The heritage level crossing gates were destroyed by a train that failed to stop at Ballarat station. It was on the news as well
Any idea on how they are going with the 9 car Velocity testing, are they any closer to revenue service yet
There is no setting out date yet mate
