- Piano Concerto No. 1
Music by Ludwig van Beethoven
Leonard Bernstein, pianist and conductor with the Vienna Philharmonic
A concert in Musikverein Wien
51 years later they could not have imagined me watching this concert on my phone.
Well done, Beethoven!
Well done Bernstein!
Well done Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra!
lesson for all of us "Love what you do"
Beautifully apt!
I apply my life to this quote!!!
Lenny, Maestro, we miss your passion, your craft, your joy...miss you so much.
What a great man!! conductor, composer, pianist. Nothing he could not do. If he did not smoke all those cigarettes, he might still be with us.
And you forgot teacher. Nobody could come close to matching the clarity and originality with which he explained music, let alone to do it in such an exciting and fun-filled manner that even an 8-year old with no experience in classical music could understand and enjoy it. The man was truly blessed.
I can't speak on his technical abilities as a pianist or a conductor, but Bernstein always seems to be having a great time doing what he does. His passion is visible and it's fun to watch.
😂😂c
HE WAS AN OUTSTANDING CONDUCTOR AND MUSICIAN AND ALSO MUSICCOMPOSER!
HE SUCCOMBEND ALL TO EARLY
OF HIS ADICTION B U T WHEN HE
PERFIRMED HE WAS SHARP AS
KNIFE AND ABSOLUTELY DEVOTED TO THE MUSIC HE
PERFORMED BEUTYFULLY AND
ABSOLUTEKY CORRECT AS IN THIS BEETHOVEN PIANO CONCERTO NO 1 AND MANY
MORE MUSIC COMPOSITIONS
OF THE GREAT COMPOSERS!
What a glorious treat! I only wish Bernstein had done a lot more piano playing. He was absolutely great at everything he touched, but I think it's a shame that we've been deprived of hearing him play th piano sonatas and concerti of Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert and works by Schumann and Brahms. I've PLAYED this work, myself, and can only marvel at the great insights Bernstein had into its "hidden meanings" and the wonderful aura of joyful spontaneity hebrought forth in this performance.
This man IS music.. unbeleivable
+martapoes yes, unbeleivable
I can't even begin to play this piece, much less memorize it, much less also conduct it. Maestro, you were the greatest.
practice mate
and that's not the only piece he does that
Who is counting the mistakes?! Just sit back and listen. Bernstein might not hit every note but he has passion for the music beyond all. He was maestro of all, have listened to him and admired him since the Young People's Concerts in the 1960s in NYC. Such a thrill for a young person, which I was. An incredible inspiration. To play and conduct such a performance is almost inhuman.
Bravo!
I watched the Young People's Concerts on TV. Lenny coaxed and provoked me into appreciating "classical" music. I will always remember him conducting a Concert for Peace about 1980 or '81 at St John the Divine in NYC. A tiny man, I thought, far up on the steps to the Choir, silver hair, black cloak as he took his conducting spot. In addition to his musician-ship, Lenny was a showman...which is as it should be.
Superhuman, even!
I'm at the end of the first movement and no wrong notes yet. The rest of your post is spot on.
Ok, in the solo part at the end of the first movement I heard one clunker.
I'm speechless. Leonard Bernstein has been making the rounds here on RUclips lately. I'm not sure why exactly. A lot of the clips show him either arguing with a singer or losing his patience with someone who didn't see eye to eye with him. A lot of clips also show Bernstein the educator and communicator, conveying feelings of joy and enthusiasm to anyone who'd listen. Then there's this. We live in an era that was (and still is) full of some of the greatest conductors known to music. But rare is it that you'll find one who composed, conducted and played like Leonard Bernstein. He is in a class all its own.
This was part of Beethoven bicentenary celebrations in 1970.
I remember Bernstein describing Beethoven as"the greatest composer who's ever lived."
Quite right!😊
Bernstein-san is a pianist, conductor, composer, and a super-first-class person. I was impressed by such a wonderful piano performance.
Seele pur!!!!
_A true Master is one who can play passages so fast that an untrained ear would never know any mistake was made!_
GOD bless Mr. Bernstein!
Genius played by genius. Excellent analog sound. Thank you for posting.
What a breathtaking cadenza! Bernstein was one of Beethoven's best interpreters - fiery, well-conceived, captivating.
Tom Willbanks What are you talking about? Dull? AM Radio?? What???
What is so unique here is that in most joint conductor/pianist exercises, the artist merely goes thru the motions, waving his hands here and there a few times in lieu of full conducting. By contrast, Lenny conducts with his entire body, as if he'd be on the podium. To do that in between virtuoso playing of the piano, without having a moment to rest, is truly a remarkable feat.
Leo Smart It's not that he'd need to rest, but that the two disciplines are so effortlessly enmeshed. Bernstein was an incredible artist in every sense of the word.
On the money. You took the words out of my mouth. He conducts as though there is nothing on his mind besides the conducting; and he holds nothing back. A most incredible feat from one of the greatest geniuses in recent memory: Leonard Bernstein
One of the most fun pieces of music in the entire classical cannon and Lenny certainly does it justice here!
Nothing less than absolutely phenomenal.
Most of the times i skip directly to the third movement...makes my day!! The joy of music is in his face!
see my comment above
The total master, Lenny, reaching for his best, reaching it, in one of Ludwig's greatest pieces!
grande energia ,stupendi fraseggi e orchestrazione sapiente un pianista efficace e ''creativo''grazie...
From around 34:30 until the end has to be some of the greatest music ever written & played in the history of man. The whole work is great but this ending is absolutely ass kicking and Beethoven's genius really shines here. I love this to death !!
Third movement is recommended by doctors for people with depression..........I am not making this up
@@danmalic6688 for real?!
Agree. Sheer genius. Listen to no. 5. That's almost madness. How on earth can someone write this....HOW?
@@karinwijnberg9489 Assuming you're addressing the Beethoven concertos, I'd add 4 to the mix. Small edge over 5.
the third movement rocks!
Lenni, we miss you.
Dear gawd, not only is he playing without sheet music, half the time he doesn't even look at the keys AND he's friggin' conducting!!!
msirull Um, no one would perform a concert with the sheet music. But I understand what you mean. I'm awestruck also. He looks at the keys sometimes, but not as often as most musicians.... He must have eaten and slept this music-you can tell the music is a part of him. Bernstein plays and conducts so effortlessly. He's not the world's greatest pianist, perhaps, but his performance is amazing. I just wish the piano was better tuned. I have perfect pitch and it's bothering me slightly. I also wish the piano had been a better instrument.
Awesome! Conducting and playing piano.
L. Bernstein plays Beethoven very convincingly! It is a joy to watch and listen to him and the orchestra! Thank you!
Too many flub ups!
Thomas K Geydan Bernstein understood Beethoven magnificently.
The cadenza he uses here...I'm gonna check the score...but has he just made most of that himself? Love this man!! Such a sharp and brilliant mind!!!
Well, the cadenza he uses is exactly as written down (or reconstructed?) by Beethoven himself, as published in the Schirmer Edition of this concerto. Nevertheless he plays it marvellous!
YES! Marvellous is the ONLY word for t.@@grotri-jansteinweg5377
If you felt he was making it up on the spot," that means his performance was an ENORMOUS success (it really WAS!). In 18th and 19th centuries performers were expected to improvise cadenzas and even to make their own improvised embellisments or variations on the repetition of main themes in works we now refer to as "classical." It's almost a lost art today so cautious and overly-calculated have today's players become for fear of making errors. A shame!
@@grotri-jansteinweg5377 It sounds like almost all of it is "reconstruction," not Beethoven. I certainly enjoyed the beautiful playing of this cadenza by Leonard Bernstein!
Beethoven wrote 3 different cadenzas to the first movement. Bernstein chose the longest one here. Beethoven was very disappointed in the pianists of the day and that's why he wrote many cadenzas. The cadenza to his second concerto op.19 was composed some 20 years after the original work and is a masterpiece. When he wrote his fifth concerto (the Emperor) he specifically mentioned "sine una cadenza- meaning without a cadenza, making sure no pianist would dare improvise some material of his own.
MAGNIFIQUE !!! MERCI
Hervorragend Leonard Bernstein, einmalige Darstellung
Danke fuer das Video
I can watch LB doing ANYTHING really, but this is an absolute masterpiece... One with the music.
Bernstein is so so so cool
32 likes!?!? BRB, I'm going to create 50 million new accounts to bring that number up where it belongs.
This is my one favorite works by Beethoven. I love it and thank you for uploading.
leonard bernstein´s got all the jazz in him it takes to play beethoven the way he does.. regards from germany............
Impressionnant !!!!
Grandiose !!!!!
Que sentimiento Leonard, se te extraña mucho.
An electrifying performance of this concerto by Der Lenny - probably unmatched anywhere. You can only get this level of performance when the pianist and conductor are one and the same. The odd fluffed note only serves to emphasize the spontaneity of the live performance.
Krystian Zimerman conductor and pianist outshines Leonard Bernstein and does not make errors as Bernstein does here.
FOOL!@@sarahjones641
@@francoaragosta4285 What a charming person you are.....
Sarah Jones yes but he’s a Kristian and Bernstein was Jewish, lets keep religion out of here please
Piano Concerto No. 1 in C major, Op. 15 (1795, rev. 1800)

Thank you for adding this!!
So suberb the music the maestro the adagio makes me cry
Beautiful!
wonderfull.... bright person....
QUE EXTRAORDINARIO MUSICO....QUE MAGNIFICA LA CADENZA DEL 1ER TEMPO CON ESOS GRAVES AGREGADOS AL COMIENZO. FABULOSO BERNSTEIN.
-- Bernstein était un génie de son siècle. La musique lui doit beaucoup. --
68 people actually gave this brilliant performance a thumbs down!
Because of mistakes.
Masterpiece!
PROFESSIONALISM IN COMPOSING BY THE MASTER L V BEETHOVEN AND ALSO
PROFESSIONALISM IN CONDUCTING AND PLAYING THE PIANO - THAT IS (WAS) LEONARD BERNSTEIN! A MASTERPIECE!
Great great great music!
Truly poetic movement and expression
Somewhere on RUclips is Bernstein explaining a Bach keyboard concerto, then demonstrating different ways an orchestra might back it, and then, best of all, leading an orchestra with Glenn Gould! Bernstein makes the TV audience want to say, "Yes, yes, we understand", even if we don't entirely (and Gould is young and seems to sing to himself).
Bravo maestro!!
A terrific performance by Bernstein. All younger pianists and Beethoven disciples should better see this video.
Here they will come to hear and observe how Wonderful a Grand Master Beethoven is...and how great Bernstein is....
I totally enjoy Bernstein
Perfect play! Great orchestra, just like Beethoven wanted to sound. Thanks!
brillante Leonard..
WOW ! I can’t get past the 1st movement….it just Knocks me out ! And what a KILLER cadenza ! The bass clef on the piano sounds like a man’s voice….amazing ! Thank you for this wonderful upload !
HE WAS OR IS FANTASTIC!!
Sorprendente. Gracias por compartir. ...

Lenny is my hero from a musical standpoint; his personal life was a bit of a mess but it wasn't really his fault as a gay man when he couldn't afford to be publicly identified as such. That he was called upon to conduct the Ninth with all the allied powers in Berlin to commemorate the fall of Communism when he was dying says it all. Hearing this piece reminds me of when I came in a beat late on the oboe with the Sac City College orchestra at a climactic point in the first movement. It is truly remarkable that he could play with such perfection and yet turn in such a masterful interpretation of the work as a whole. He truly was the greatest figure in American music history. West Side Story remains the state of the art musical; he was involved with the avant garde folks to some degree and his Concerts for Young People (mandatory watching for my sister and me by my accomplished pianist herself my mom, who probably would have been more so if her younger brother's talent hadn't surpassed even hers; I have a 78 of him recording the Gershwin Concerto in F). I have him in part to thank for resurrecting my own musical life, resuming playing the alto sax for older folks. Sadly my oboe's pads got destroyed by bugs and it was not worth fixing.
Einer der besten Dirigenten der Welt!
Lenny was always one of my musical heroes and his stature as a performing pianist was much underplayed - probably due to his profound talents elsewhere. Nice also to see Willy Boskovsky in this film, leader of the Wiener Phil.
Merveilleux. Merci mille fois bravo0910.
Absolutely Romantic
GENIAL!!!!!!!!!!! SIE SIND GENIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Stima, Respect, Admiratie!
fantastic!!!
I agree with several of the previous comments: Lennie always seemed to really love what he was doing, and he was such an optimistic, positive person. His enthusiasm for music and teaching was his gift to the World. (I gotta say that this particular stage seems positively claustrophobic, it's so small/crowded! I guess that's how many early concert halls are.)
Cuanta belleza.
Lovely Bernstein ❤️😍😍
The third movement is recommended by doctors for people with depression or just those going through rough times. Add to that watching, Lenny having a wonderful time directing and playing, what more can one ask for. Wow! 46 "dislikes"?
dan malic I didn't know that about the third movement. How wonderful.
Really?
Mistakes not Maestro Bernsteins best quite disappointing that is why many dislikes mayebe had to stop listening and I usually think he is exceptional.
it is marvellous :-)
My God! I wouldn't have given if had performed his OWN cadence insread of the written cadence. Bravó MAESTRO
Oh wow, he went for the hardest cadenza!
I. Allegro con brio 1:25
II. Largo 21:55
III. Rondo. Allegro 34:40
Did the first two movements of this fantastic work in college at Northwest Missouri State University under the study of Dr. Earnest Kramer. (1994-1995) Amazing piece of art/music!
can u belive?! He died the same year. Sad. Only his WESTSIDE STORY is enough ti call him genious.
i absolutely love his playing
the only thing i feel is that Mr Bernsteins playing is not pianist type, it is something i absolutely love about him
ive heard many other pianists play many pieces of music including Beethoven but when i listen to them it always feels pianistic in nature where as when Mr Bernstein plays the piano
he has all the pianistic techniques but still it does not feel like as if a pianist is playing this piece and that is the thing i absolutely love about his playing.
i thank you very much for this.
Happy 100th birthday Lenny.
brillante leonard for ever
Good music and performance.
