The Team Covenant Xwing coverage was my first intro to competitive Xwing. Watched so many streams, good to see a throwback. Maybe more xwing in the future?
What got me hooked was actually LOTR LCG and then Marvel Champions kept me around long term. I keep coming back because of videos just like this. Laid back, drinks, discussion, example gameplay, opinions, and even some history recaps (tournaments). Neber got super into X-Wing but have a few favorite ships and Core Set. Appreciate the 2.5 update as I would never have known otherwise.
I found you though your Xwing you tube games videos, unboxings and blogs when I got into the game around 2015. You then introduced me to my other favourite game Marvel Champions and gotten me intrested in Arkham though I haven't taken the plunge yet
I found you via x-wing when you were discussing new releases and talking about how they might play or how they might be relevant. I really enjoyed those videos :)
Also found this channel because of your competitive Xwing coverage, despite only playing casually. Hyped to see you guys back in Xwing, if only briefly.
Found your channel via Xwing 6 years ago having never played tabletop games prior. Played xwing fanatically here in London for 4 years, travelling across Europe for Nationals and European champs and culminated in travelling to Minneapolis for Worlds 2019. Covid hit and players were forced online. I couldn't connect to my team or the game through online play and not playing with my own repainted ships. I continued following you guys and picked up Skytear- which played amazingly online- but as stores began to reopen I latched onto Flesh and Blood through you guys. I never thought of it this way, but covenant has had a huge impact on my life when I look back over my late-20s.
Found this channel during the pandemic with the throwback series and thanks to you im now collecting swccg, middle earth, lotr tcg wars ccg, netrunner (amazing learning series btw) and more to come im sure. Thank you for all that you do and please continue streaming.
It certainly was through the X-Wing videos that I found Covenant. Ended up not playing much of that game since I didn’t have enough time or people to play with. But I have never looked back from following Covenant and I fully appreciate all that I have experienced and become involved in through Covenant. So many of my daily driver games are influenced by y’all.
First time I've actually watched gameplay of X-Wing. Looks rad. Reading the buyer's guide on your website (which is great btw) has made me realize this is going to be an expensive hobby to get into 😂
This was a wonderful trip down memory lane. I got into xwing watching your unboxing videos all those years ago. Eventually left the game after the Asmodee handover.
Found you doing a The Spoils tutorial, and also Monsterpocalypse. But for me, the most important game you have covered was Game of Thrones lcg. That was a game I was really into for quite some time.
I got into both champions and X-wing because of you guys. Very much enjoying this new overview as I dropped off playing at 2.0 cos of the upgrade kits cost was not tailored to a casual collections upgrade to the new 2.0.
I only found you guys recently. Something reminded me of the old Star Wars CCG a few months back, so I checked RUclips to see if there were any recent gameplay videos of it, and lo-and-behold, some guys called Team Covenant were streaming a Premiere set deckbuilding/gameplay session live right then. After that I stuck around for the Lord of the Rings TCG Throwback series, and your videos have got me to go buy Middle-Earth CCG, Wars CCG, Arkham Horror, and now I'm opening up my new X-Wing core set. My only regret is that I didn't find you guys before Netrunner got flatlined, because I think I'd have loved that game.
I'm hoping the game can catch a resurgence again. I dropped out at the end of 1.0, right before 2.0. There's a small group where I'm at and was thinking about diving back in by picking up all the conversion and new spicy stuff. It's such a fun game that's friendly towards peeps that want to get into tabletop war games but not the weeks(or months) of prep.
We had the same discussion recently. I've ended up pulling together a new version of 1.0, all as was rules wise, and ship releases up to and including wave 6, plus some scum expansions to balance the ship numbers and level the playing field. The format includes all pilots and upgrades in those ships selected. We've played 4 games in 2 weeks, it's been so nostalgic and great fun. We will add to our meta, we might add the Tie Striker next, but we're being careful to keep the game about flying and not being the overblown mess it became from wave 7 onwards (never adding the K-Wing expansion, the Jumpmaster can sod off, etc etc). We call our version, X-Wing 1.5 Golden Age. It's basically frozen right on the cusp of where big tournaments were still a good split between rebels and imperials, and the scum faction ships we've added seem well balanced within the three. It's about flying vs. list building being around 80/20, rather than the 20/80 that the game fell into by wave 11.
LOVE to see that you guys up'd some x wing content. Tbh, I thought the game may be dead because there aren't any updates about new ships, etc anywhere. AMG does not seem to update their website with upcoming release news like FFG did. Anyhow, I started watching TC for your unboxing videos for LotR LCG, SW LCG, ANr LCG and X wing expansions. MISS your unboxing vids and all the discussion that would surround how cards may slot in with existing meta, etc. Thank you for all of the faithful years to the hobby and the content you have given to the table top community.
My first exposure to you guys was the X-Wing buyers guide. I never bought into the game, but I was interested enough to start looking into it and that article was one of the first ones I looked at. I didn’t subscribe to your RUclips until you started the ArkhamLCG streams started at the start of the pandemic though.
I played 1.0 extensively, and only played a few games of 2.0 due to scheduling and then COVID. I was thinking about coming back for 2.5 but the initiative (player order) rule change kills this game for me. Knowing the opponents possible moves and being able to predict them was a huge part for me. Knowing that they would be trying to predict my moves, and being able to use that to surprise them was a huge part of the game. These two things were part of the skill gap. Intentionally "bumping" your opponent and/or causing them to "bump" you in order to deny action economy falls into this skill Gao as well. Why was this changed? If one player always having initiative becomes degenerate, as I'm sure it can and did, why not have the initiative swap each round to allow for more accurate planning? It seems to me the changes in 2.0, especially where turrets are concerned, made the skill of maneuvering matter. The changes to player order seems to me to make that skill less important. Maybe I'm missing something and someone can help explain because I really miss playing this game, but this one change makes the game so much less appealing to me. Anyway, keep up the good work Team Covenant, you always made the best looking perifrials for this game!
1.0 may bot have been broken but it did have an issue with power creep, and turrets made the skill of flying less important. Those issues needed to be addressed imo. But the initiative thing is just... bad game design.
Definitely found you guys via X-Wing - the 4 straight by Paul with Han against Morgan in the finals had me hooked! Those First Order templates are still my favorite - they look so good.
Hi, I'm trying to set up a tournament set for a charitable games club. The biggest challenge I have is that the players speak various languages with most only speaking one language, but one that is different from the other players.... Can you recommend a site or app for easily creating and printing multiple language copies of ship+pilot+upgrades - summaries similar to what you use in your demo game in this video?
Team covenant got me heavy into x wing 1.0 when I was a teenager. I remember buying in heavy around 2014. I still have all my stuff. Want to play on occasion still too bur don't get the chance
I found you guys through Marvel Champions. Love Marvel Monday! Would love to see you play Outer Rim. Would also love to know if you have ever played or considered playing Heroscape. Love the content!!!
Found you through how to play TFTCG. 2020 mid pandemic friends were into xwing, redound you and got excited to find there was a series of champions streams and the early pandemic streams.
Even I love the game I must agree that it got far more complicated and the funny thing was that the changes AMG introduced were supposed to simplify X-Wing for new players 😀, on the other hand the game is better in some aspects and worse in others. Let us see what happens next.
So I came across this game at my local B&N. It had both core sets for 15$ each. I have done some research and bought another 160$ in ships. I am excited to start this gaming experience and be a "large scale" table topper! I have been shopping around and have been able to buy everything at a discount or on sale brand new. All my purchases have been scattered throughout different websites but the time is worth the money especially if it gets more ships to my table! I personally feel that all the scenarios, solo rules, new upgrades, pilots, quick start cards and obstacles are a great add on to the game that creates exponentially more variety in the game so no game will be the same. Again this is just me reading about the game, I have not played it yet. I found you through Marvel Champions and found it extremely ironic that you played this game as I am just getting into it. I will have to check out some older videos and see what this amazing commentary is all about! Thanks Team Covenant for providing the great content! ....Board games you say??
I’ve been here since Netrunner was released in 2012, but weirdly my first subscription plan with you guys was for lord of the rings LCG in 2013 or 2014!
X-wing was my introduction to Covenant, I stopped playing just before the 2.0 announcement. I was on the lookout for a cheap star field mat to play Sorcery on because I thought the Void was pretty thematic with the star field background. Turns out these mats don’t really lose value
Even though I have not played 2.5 they did implement what you are basically talking about at the end in the form of Quick Build. Instead of 200 points it would be closer to what you have in 2.5 in terms of points (threat) and they made a bunch of cards with all upgrades etc. on it and an associated 'threat level'. Basically those look how the cards you were playing with looked like. That would be a decent entry point I think as well, if that translates over to 2.5 at all, so new players don't need to think about list building etc.
must admit, the sound of the new initiative layout wont add to the game experience, more take away. appears to make some sense on paper.. but likely lead to chaos in practice
This game could have been so much more popular than it is. I am literally struggling to find coverage and gameplay of it on it here on RUclips. Found like a few games that's it.
@@teamcovenant AMG's saying they've got faction specific starter sets coming in 2023, and they're trying to fix up the new player experience that got left behind by the big rules update this year. If you guys give any of those boxes a look, I'm sure I'd enjoy watching more of your X-Wing content.
Think it has something to do with the black box? The deeper X-Wing community should be able to help out - sorry we're out of the loop. They really went wild with the new editions.
Okay I can help with this I think as another new player. The “starter set” is 2.0, but is fully compatible with 2.5. However, if you buy one of the brand new Starter Squadrons (rebel or imperial) I believe it is designed for 2.5 and has a 2.5 rulebook. 2.5 added a couple of new tokens missing from 2.0 - notably objective markers - but is otherwise fully compatible. 2.5 isn’t even an official edition, It’s just a name the fans gave to the AMG rules overhaul. Community is pretty split on 2.0 vs 2.5, but if you’re playing casually I see no reason not to buy a box, try both modes and see what works for you!
Still play 1.0. - cause I´m just a hobby player - loved the games 5+ years ago on your YT channel - unfortunately "my" time with xwing 1.0 videos is over cause nobody makes any ;) :(
Zac: On stream, when we don't know what we're doing, and you're new to the game- Steven: It could be a three-hour situation. Video is 2:59:08. Not quite that bad, then? :D
I first came across y'all when looking at MonPoc coverage back in the day. At the final worlds for X-Wing 1, the overwhelming majority opinion was that the game had become broken beyond repair. 2 was a huge leap in fixing things and resetting things that needed it, but it came out as Asmodee was 'restructuring' (firing heaps of people and juggling who ran what where), and by the time things were starting to settle, Covid hit. Further restructuring happens, shipping is completely boned (I know I don't have to tell you just how badly Asmodee shipping broke). With 2.5, there are the angry, bitter quitters (as with any edition of any game), but the game is improved. There needs to be a balancing pass now that What the Atomic Mass team has released their work into the wild, but the game is solid and can grow in a healthy way. In the big picture of things, ROAD (random order after dials) for initiative is the best way to fix a huge problem the game had where any list reliant on high-initiative ships always being able to react with perfect information could underspend on their list to 'bid' for initiative. The end result was that underspending your list if you were flying aces was always, 100% of the time the most powerful 'upgrade' you could take. Now that you don't know for certain if your initiative-tied ships will go before or after their counterparts means you have to not just make smart decisions, but also choose if you want to play aggressive or cautious - risky and bold, or hedge against your opponent winning the advantage that round (and did they play bold or cautious?). Scenario play, ROAD, more dangerous obstacles, and the new squad building rules all contribute to the game taking place more on the board than in your list, and the core of X-Wing - dials, reading the opponent, and smart play are emphasized more than ever.
I feel like every version makes the game harder to play. I'm trying to figure out how to judge what upgrades go on what for 2.0 and I can't easily find that info when it was right slap dab on the 1.0 cards on what bonuses you can apply. Also removing skill judging who goes first makes it more RNG and not less. Meaning you take away skill and make it more RNG base. Higher RNG helps newer players but it really hurts people who know what they are doing. In a way, I think it takes less choice away because you can sorta bully lower skilled pilots which is how I think it should be. other wise tie swarms would be what everyone only plays, because you can't K turn behind them 100% of the time like you used to. As I said, the skill is being taken away and given to dice which is bad game design in a skill based board game.
You know there's a compelling case to be made for this. As things continued to get optimized and pushed for the "competitive" side of the game, it also made things more complex. It's really hard to avoid this - maybe impossible. One of the fundamental tensions in tabletop.
to this day I still watch your XWing 2.0 introduction games with Alex Davy. I must have watched it like 100 times.😀

The sequels are great, especially last Jedi. :D
