i saw these guys in sheffield early 80s they were splendid ,, what a band there voices were made for each other , what harmonies , this arrangement is stunning what a pure classic lol
What a great song! I haven't heard this in years. I'd forgotten how awesome it is. They did a great live/acoustic version of this on the Nicky Campbell show many, many years go on BBC Radio. Thanks for posting!
Agree! They're so unique and so talented/multi-faceted: Glenn has an incredible voice that you'll only know if you see him live, outstanding musicians and songwriters.
Yes The imagery and the arrangement are amazing for a young band playing in the late 70s What was going on with them to create something as complete and subtle as this
I can't stop listening to this, I heard a snippet of this in a program once, and wondered what it is, thanks to re-runs of TOTP, I'm here and I've made a marvellous discovery, I've always liked Squeeze, but had no idea they did this one!
I've been trying to figure out the powerful allure of this song for awhile. It is very offbeat, distant, a little weird, and mysterious but nicely packaged in a easy to listen to pop format.
I'm fascinated by Synthesisers as well, the old 70's analogue ones and hybrids, the sounds that came out of them were nothing short of amazing, and I like that touch of either Hammond or Wurlitzer organ in this as well, I'd love to know what else they used synthesizer wise!
A brilliant production from a band not normally associated with synthpop (which wasn't even a thing when this was recorded). What a journey Jools Holland has been on over the years! I love the combination of very early drum machine (Roland CR-80 at a guess, also used on "Heart Of Glass" and "In The Air Tonight") and rattling live drums, not a conventional pop, rock or disco beat by any means. Above all, it's a great song melodically, lyrically and structurally, packing in absolutely everything you could want into just shy of 3 minutes. One of the best pop songs of the entire 20th centrury to be honest.
First CD I ever heard through high quality digital headphones with closed cell foam, borrowed off my mate.Blissful days sitting up in the college library doing project work. BTW, personal CD players were a new thing then, and we still mainly had Walkmans, etc.
I bought 45's and under when I was 17 or 18. Which was about 6 years after this song came out in the U.K. but nothing sounded fresher, smarter or just plain groovier at the time. This song is a pop classic.
This track reminded me of when i worked for a certain high street Bank. Once over they were giving away free pens would you believe. Pens that had the title of this track on them. Maybe they should have had another lot that said "Because dreams are made of this," we think.
Never heard this before, it's cool - but didn't realize 'sweet dreams' by eurithmics (which came out a number of years later) was, ahem, inspired by this. To my ears pretty much wholesale took "dreams are made of this" lyric, melody, and synth line! Still that's songwriting for ya - prefer 'sweet dreams', tbh! 😃
For a while, Squeeze just churned out remarkably recognizable music and could do no wrong. Instantly recognizable too, much of it. Of course, the most talented members aren't the ones everbody remembers... eh Jools???
i bought this as a single when I was released, my then girlfriend was jealous cos I can sing and she was tone deaf if you don't believe it check out a couple of tracks by a small and yet great band from the early 1980s fleeting image ,the children and illusion man ,I play bass and sing vocals on both tracks
Rock Your Baby by George McCrae? Not to mention for electronic percussion sounds Donna Summer's I Feel Love plus anything by Kraftwerk and even that Popcorn by Hot Butter thing!

I absolutely love this song and always will.
Brilliant harmony and beautiful synth playing. Squeeze is underrated.
Blueshoe this comment is underrated
@@crittersarereal851 Squeeze had its heyday and, like most bands, passed on into music history, to be enjoyed only in venues like RUclips.
Mike Phalen yeah true
Agree! They're so unique and so talented/multi-faceted: Glenn has an incredible voice that you'll only know if you see him live, outstanding musicians and songwriters.
Underrated by whom?
Brilliant song. Such an underrated band
In my humble opinion this is the best thing Squeeze ever did. God knows how they came up with such an unlikely arrangement. Brilliant.
Your opinion in the area counts for very little
That's why he called his opinion humble. Don't be a dick.

Only 34 years of age but growing up in the UK ,squeeze makes the playlist respect the classics ,their word play was awesome for the time .
I absolutely cannot get enough of this song. It just gets me every damn time.

A gem like this needs a masterpiece for the thumbnail.

Clarkson: The noise it's making! It's biblical! (laughs)
I have vivid memories of listening to this while emulating Kirby 64 on my PC in 2005 during summer school.... good times
Cerne is quite correct. And how about that equally unique unison octave harmony?
I love the bass in this track!
Johnny, this is definitely my favorite on a lonely day!

Take me I'm yours
Because dreams are made of this
Sweet Dreams!
Thank you. :)
Squeeze had a very unique style, that's definitely very likable, due to its uniqueness.
Anyone that has lyrics appearing in time to read them deserves a special mention.

+1 This is what a true sexy tune should sound like
A classic track. Loads of synths on it, and someone's lead guitar even gets processed through a synth (ms20? minimoog?)
Brillant band

I'm I the only one who thinks this music sounds really mischievous?
You're right! It really does have a bit of a cheeky vibe to it!
Oops I'm not supposed to be here but here I am ;p
Makes me think that Stephin Merritt is probably a huge Squeeze fan
SuperGood
