I have much pleasure listening to all of the Beethoven Brautigam recorded, so I have no doubt that this will be equally fantastic. Thanks for bringing this to my attention.
@charleshaxthausen1626 Thanks..I have that series as well, and it is good of you to highlight them. I do need to see if he has done more Schubert, as the disc Mr. H mentioned went under my radar.
His D 960 is simply sublime. If you are used to, say, Lupu's, at a first listen you may think that the instrument shows some shortcomings and the result lacks some intensity and expression but, please, listen to it again, and even a third time. You just get addicted and like it more and more each time.
I'm rarely won over by the fortepiano... BUT, Brautigam's Beethoven Bagatelles and Variations CD is one of my very favorite fortepiano albums, so I'll have to give this one a try. I'm curious to know how this CD compares with Andras Schiff's recent recordings of Schubert on the fortepiano. I guess I'll have to check that out as well for comparison's sake. Thanks for the review.
I was also very curious about the difference. I prefer personally Schiff. Brautigam is excellent, but brings a very objective version. Schiff brings more personality… and joy.
I have always loved the late Schubert sonatas. These really are spectacular examples. His version of the hair-raising second movement of 959 is probably the best I've heard.
I found his album of Schubert's Impromptus even more impressive than this one. I hope he keeps them coming, as he has done with Beethoven and Mendelssohn.
Wow! You weren't kidding. I just listened to the Bb Major from this recording. Painfully beautiful. Thank you so much for recommending it!
Brautigam seems to be consistently excellent. I really enjoy listening to his performances. Looks like I’ll have to add this to the collection.

Try his Haydn. 15 CDs of sheer pleasure!

I feel the same about the fortepiano, and I'm also convinced to give this recording dedicated attention.

The BEST! Sound quality fabulous!
Brautigam's recording of Schubert Impromptus are amazing too. As great as Lupu's, but a different style.
You sold me again, Dave. Now I have to find the Beethoven.
