Hi Jen! we are in the process of moving to Prague following a job opportunity. I've found very hard to find channels like yours for families with kids (I might become the first one, who knows :D ). I have a school kid and it will be awesome if you invite to one of your videos to an expat mom who is already stablished in Prague, specially someone who doesn't speak the language and hear about their experience. I've learned a lot from your channel... BTW my daughter speaks spanish and she is learning english so an international school sounds like the best option for now :)🙂
Man I've always wondered where I could find americans or any other native english speakers here in Czechia. Cause I would love to talk to them irl instead of just online.
well played =). This video clearly shows that you actually already have become a Czech. Excellent knowledge of Czech realia and history, typical Czech sense of humour, there is no doubt that the citizenship exams were just a formality. Welcome aboard, my lady and keep doing these wonderful videos.
I love Your jokes about Brno :-) (I am from Prague :-) ) and I also really like how you beautifully put it with the rules. If we don't like a rule, if we not hurting/harassing anyone by breaking it, and no one is watching, we'll all collectively ignore it, and that often includes the police.
Awesome. You don’t need to tell us why we should live in Czech. We know Jen. Love your vids. Been watching them since you started in lockdown in the UK. We were in Prague last week and look forward to being there on a more permanent basis soon. Keep doing your stuff.
Ahoj Jen, you look great and happy today, you always make my day... :-) Edit: In fact, it is quite easy to get gun permit, it is "shall" obtain, state has no say, like driving licence, you do the test and practical test, no hard criminal record, you have the gun licence. Czech have a lot of guns, but concealed carry in mandatory, so you do not see guns so often. As you live here, you can get it too, citizenship not required.
@@otakarsulc4686 no felony, 500USD, and show on the test that I know how to handle a gun and know the laws. in my opinion that's pretty easy. (future gun license holder maybe)
@@bmxrichard21 It depends on the person. There are 500 questions to learn, some people can do it without any problems, for others it is an insurmountable obstacle. Being clean, not having a criminal record, not being an alcoholic, not being a drug user, not having psychiatric problems? For some, it's a given, for others, it's a problem. Gun handling - they're much stricter than they used to be, and it's no exception that they throw out half the applicants... The shooting test itself is really easy. As I wrote, for most law abiding citizens, getting a firearms license is no problem. I wouldn't call it hard, but I wouldn't call it easy either, we don't hand them out like rolls or like Americans.
@@otakarsulc4686 yeah, I totally agree with this :-) and it can be even harder for the immigrant because they don't know they can have their criminal record wiped clear, admit to drug use by answering leading questions by police, etc. The correct description isn't probably quite easy, but just a middle difficult.
My great grandparents moved from Bohemia (Sruby/Prochody from what I can tell) in the 1880s. Consequently I've become interested in Czechia over the last decade or so and visited a number of times. My wife and I talked about moving to Brno when I retired but she can't take the cold and I'm not up to learning the language. So we moved to Spain instead. But we still visit. In November we're heading back to Brno for the Janacek festival and then exploring Christmas markets in Central Europe.
I stayed in a friend's panel flat for a few weeks. I really liked it. Everything was nearby within walking distance, even the subway, or the bus stop was 50 meters away if you didn't feel like walking.
I’m no gun nut, but obtaining a gun license in the Czech Republic, all with concealed-carry permit, is about as difficult as getting a driver’s license. Arguably, that’s part of why the country is relatively safe, though it’s a combination of factors.
That. Our concelaed carry rules are more permissive than many US states in fact. I have been through the process and I would say that it is bit easier than driver's licence even. Then again, I do hate driving...
Well, even total idiot can have driver license, they literally give it to everyone who pays, so I hope obtaining a gun license is at least slightly harder. Some people have literally IQ of room temperature, they have no idea about basic mechanics and physics and still, they have driver license. I believe that even orangutan could obtain driver license in Czech Republic.
I would be a poor fit for a gun license. I'm very glad the potential attacker doesn't know that. And I'd say among Czech gun license holders, the system helps a lot to have quite a lot of *responsible* gun owners while having minimal gun-crazed idiots armed.
Two less known Czech places straight from a fairy tale: - Giacomo Casanova lived in Duchcov Chateau for 13 years: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchcov_Chateau - Sir Edward Kelley, the famous alchemist, was imprisoned by emperor Rudolf II in Hněvín Castle: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hn%C4%9Bv%C3%ADn_Castle (although the original castle was demolished after the Thirty Years' War, the current castle is a literal tourist attraction built shortly before World War I).
I will be visiting Prague for the 3rd time to "again" participate in an English Immersion Program in August. I would love to have a coffee with you and talk about relocating to Prague.
As a Prague's resident, I love what cool tips you give to people. Absolutely great content and explain better than a rodily Cech. Thank you again for sharing all of your knowledge. Sending much love.
Thank you so much for your videos, as a Colombian doing my first steps in czech language, it's very encouraging to keep learning and to start to save some money to start the process to move there. 😊
A přesto ten zbroják a zbraň vlastní úplný minimum lidí. Btw v USA je pořízení zbraně výrazně jednodušší než v ČR. Stačí přijít do obchodu a koupit si ji. Bez ničeho, jen s občankou.
About those rules… I would say, that most of them are ridiculously strickt or detailed not to demand exactly such behaviour, but to create a some sort of leverage if something gets out of hand… Like if there is speed limit 50 kmh and you go 70 kmh. Radar by the road has limit probably 75 kmh, so it's fine… BUT if you hit someone, then they'll measure the energy vectors and say, that you were driving roughly 15-25 kmh over speed limit, so consistently with a large difference - almost zero need for any further evidence, you're guilty…

A jde dobře k pleti ;-)
I'm really late in response to this video. BUT I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT! I'm from the USA and my wife is from Prague. She hates my guts but I would like to win her over by moving to her country...even though she and I live in London separately. You have made the knowledge the I'm about to make a must. I would like to humbly thank you.
You feel like you're watching the country evolve because that's exactly what goes on. Sure, it wasnt always exactly a smooth process and there were some big problems along the road. However with every new generation we shift further away from the depressing nothingness brought to us by Russians from the east. We slowly realise where is our place and who we are, we rediscover our roots that were ripped to pieces by nazis and soviets, but never truly gone. Our culture, economy and society in general grows quite nicely and most importantly - people started to give damn about their surroundings, about the places and communities they live in - the apathy of life in communism / early post communist times is long gone. That is of course as long as you dont live in certain parts of Sudetenland, in which case you are conserned mostly about crystal meth.
Compared to Czechoslovakia times? some things did not change for the best... As a whole - sure there has been some progress, but than again Czechoslovakia was per capita richer than Spain and Greece both before and after Second World War. So... Prague just came back where it always use to be aside from the 90-ties. So the big question is did it really have to transfer like this? Through all the prostitution, drugs and murder of the 90-ties?
Yeah pre communist czechslovakia was rich and developed and remained like that until couple of decades of communism didnt gradually grind it to dust. This is an economy that was destroyed and rebuilt again in a few decades. Before communism we had wages +- equal to the austrian wages, after communism our wages were FIFTEEN times lower. Now its like twice lower. Its no easy thing to reinvent a country and obviously, many people used that oportunity to gain wealth in organised crime - the only solution would be do it the German way, which would mean to fire literally every communist judge, policeman, lawyer, politician, manager and just about anyone holding a public position. Things are so much better now, and not just in Prague, but quite all over the place - except of course certain regions mostly in Sudetenland, that suffered socialy and economicaly so much during the last century, that it will take forever to actually fix it.
@@vh5663 Sudentenland is also way better off than it used to be, it's just that it was really shitty compared to the rest of the country even back in commie times. But you can see a huge improvement already, especially in nature - the forests look way better than they did in the 90s.
@@Starkiller935 Well the war, the post war years and communism completely destroyed what made Sudetenland a prosperous region - one of the most prosperous in the country, actually. It does get better at many places though, sure, thats why I wrote about "certain parts of Sudetenland", not the entire region. Southern Moravia, Böhmerwald, Liberec region etc. are actually very decent places to live and the nature is stunning. I still remember some of those mountain forests in the 90s, forest that looked like a ww1 battlefield after the acid rains caused by the insane pollution of the communist industry. Thank god its over. :--)

Ahoj. Great video. I love Czech Republic for many of the same reasons. But I live in a panelaky in Ceske Budejovice 4-6 months of the year, when I am not in my "primary" residence in Cleveland, and I love the minimalism. I can leave all the clutter behind and live a minimalistic life in Ceske Budejovice, which I note does not make it into your videos. Dis Brno, but CB is a fantastic university town with amateur musicians jamming in the pubs and wonderful fish pond parks good for a stroll or bike ride. I like Prague, but I like it here better. I will keep watching and maybe watch some of the earlier videos to see if you get out of Prague.
Wonderful. Well done indeed. Splendid idea might be, if you were in touch also with Texas Czechs and Chicago Czechs (the 6~7th generation of American Czechs). They still call themselves Czechs, they especially love Czech traditional music called "dechovka." They can be contacted via sport organisation Sokol or via their Czech~American organisation // they sometimes are called Bohemians. You'd have a lot of new spectators ... 👍⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐👍
I feel i have to add a little something in defence of the "paneláky". In many places these have been privatized and are now being managed either as "condominia" of sorts or by "unit owners'" associations. That means many of them are newly insulated, rennovated, had sloping roofs attached and are generally quite well maintained. :)

What place in Moravia did you choose? :) Jen already made a video about the war, anyway, for an English-speaking person nothing has changed. Jen, we have quite open gun ownership laws. As long as you pass the psychotests and dont break laws, you may own an attack rifle (no full auto). There is not even a strict rule limiting number of weapons you may own, like germany has. We also have considerable amount of them in populace, though much less than USA. The important thing is to use them responsibly, and to have users be part of a community. For example, becoming hunter (myslivec) means you have to pass their tests, learn their traditions, take part i their actions. You will first shoot at living animal year after joining. And during hunting season events, police will always show up to check alcohol level of all participants. You should look into this topic, I bet this would interest american viewers.

You just supplied me with extra reasons to move. I'm already on it. I will be there in summer of 2024
keep us posted on your first impressions! coming up soon :D
I've been kicking this idea around for years. I definitely want to retire in CZ or CR
I love Your jokes about Brno :-) (I am from Prague :-) ) and I also really like how you beautifully put it with the rules. If we don't like a rule, if we not hurting/harassing anyone by breaking it, and no one is watching, we'll all collectively ignore it, and that often includes the police.
helooo cz chabr
Thank you Jen for loving my country.
Awesome. You don’t need to tell us why we should live in Czech. We know Jen. Love your vids. Been watching them since you started in lockdown in the UK. We were in Prague last week and look forward to being there on a more permanent basis soon. Keep doing your stuff.
Don't be afraid to make a part 2! I loved this video!
Ahoj Jen, you look great and happy today, you always make my day... :-)
Edit: In fact, it is quite easy to get gun permit, it is "shall" obtain, state has no say, like driving licence, you do the test and practical test, no hard criminal record, you have the gun licence. Czech have a lot of guns, but concealed carry in mandatory, so you do not see guns so often. As you live here, you can get it too, citizenship not required.
I wouldn't say it's quite easy, but if someone in the Czech Republic wants to have a gun it's not a problem for almost any law-abiding citizen
@@otakarsulc4686 yeah, I totally agree with this :-)
and it can be even harder for the immigrant because they don't know they can have their criminal record wiped clear, admit to drug use by answering leading questions by police, etc.
The correct description isn't probably quite easy, but just a middle difficult.
😀A ty drobné vtípky...
To není země.
Ahojda Jen. Moc Ti to sluší.
"Prepare your tiara!" Am I the only one who remembered Amy Farrah-Fowler from TBBT?
I stayed in a friend's panel flat for a few weeks. I really liked it. Everything was nearby within walking distance, even the subway, or the bus stop was 50 meters away if you didn't feel like walking.
Ty jsi prostě naše...super den a pohodu :)
A dik za ni!!! 👍 👍 👍
I’m no gun nut, but obtaining a gun license in the Czech Republic, all with concealed-carry permit, is about as difficult as getting a driver’s license.
Arguably, that’s part of why the country is relatively safe, though it’s a combination of factors.
What’s the difference between Czechia and Texas?
In Czechia, breastfeeding in public is OK; open carry is not.
That. Our concelaed carry rules are more permissive than many US states in fact.
I have been through the process and I would say that it is bit easier than driver's licence even. Then again, I do hate driving...
The difficulty is relative. It's still more difficult than most places than Jen has a reference for (in the US).
Two less known Czech places straight from a fairy tale:
- Giacomo Casanova lived in Duchcov Chateau for 13 years: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duchcov_Chateau
- Sir Edward Kelley, the famous alchemist, was imprisoned by emperor Rudolf II in Hněvín Castle: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hn%C4%9Bv%C3%ADn_Castle (although the original castle was demolished after the Thirty Years' War, the current castle is a literal tourist attraction built shortly before World War I).
Opět skvělé video, jsem nadšená :). Mentalita národu odhalena aůůůůůů :)
About those rules…
I would say, that most of them are ridiculously strickt or detailed not to demand exactly such behaviour, but to create a some sort of leverage if something gets out of hand…
Like if there is speed limit 50 kmh and you go 70 kmh. Radar by the road has limit probably 75 kmh, so it's fine…
BUT if you hit someone, then they'll measure the energy vectors and say, that you were driving roughly 15-25 kmh over speed limit, so consistently with a large difference - almost zero need for any further evidence, you're guilty…
One of the best videos you produced! Bravo!
Máte hodně už hodně videí, a mě osobně by potěšilo, a nejen mě. Kdyby jste vytvořila o našem prvním prezidentovi TGM. A o železnici všeobecně vůbec v Čechách. Jinak přeji krásné Velikonoce.
Beautiful video! Thank you. We are visiting Europe after helping a new school open in Lviv. Slava Ukraine! We're in Krakow, also amazing. We will stay in Tallinn for February, hopefully longer after my Digital Nomad Visa application interview on Feb 1st...Prague looks amazing too!!! I wish Czech Republic had a DNV!
Sorry, but your sense of humour is pure czech :) Therefore, you`re one of us :)
Škoda, že ta informace o skóre pražských tramvají už není aktuální. Mezi natočením a vydáním videa tramvaje dvakrát vyhrály proti chodcům. 😅

For any Vegans planning to visit Brno, don't worry it is as vegan friendly as Prague is ! ( I totally recommend the "Pilgrim" restaurant ) :) But beware of Olomouc, there are not so many options. And unfortunately their best restaurant closed it's business recently.

A jde dobře k pleti ;-)
As I listened to you, I realized that I don´t have to visit Czechia. I have all of that in Slovakia 😀😀😀
I'm really late in response to this video. BUT I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!
I'm from the USA and my wife is from Prague. She hates my guts but I would like to win her over by moving to

Hi Jen,
Fantastic video! Made me think to move back home ! 😍🙏😊
I love everything about Czech Republic 🇨🇿 I can’t wait to go back again
Thank you, Jen , for the great video and again reminding me of what an amazing place I am lucky to live in :)

Ahoj Jen, thanks for really great video! :-)
Just for information - we don´t have any skyskaper, but we had! Check out a skyscaper in Zlín - it was built in 30s and it was the second highest building in Europe ;-)
BTW Be welcome in Zlín :-) You can see historical garden city there, but also quite unique rounded "paneláky" in the district Jižní Svahy. And much more... ;-)

As far as unique architecture of Zlín goes, I can recommend Letná district with unique small houses for workes in Baťa´s factory :-). Or architectual experiment called Colective House. But I think Zlín has much more to offer, that´s definitely true :-).

A z nejbližšího zahraničí by jsi měla navštívit Bratislavu, hlavní město našeho jazykově nejbližšího souseda. Tvořil východní část našeho bývalého státu.

I'm sorry, but I just paused the video at 1:00 and I"m sold. Now, I've seen the whole thing and I think I'm gonna start Czech lessons so I can go spend a year there. Or forever, maybe.
My flight from Charleston just got cancelled because of some stupid flight show and created me a ton of problems leading to 5 hours drive to Atlanta at 5 in the morning.. this certainly cheered me up. Thx!

Brno, ... Brno , ... Brno ... My hometown ...
Well, you look stunning today!! Look at that dress with white flowers in light blue background, this is just great!
If I ever ended up in Czechia, Jen is the Ambassador and Sherpa to make it happens.
"At the úúřaad..." :D that killed me I love your czech!
Wow Jen, you just know how to talk beautifly about czechia 😃😊. I like your videos so much, and I hope you like our country, even more! 😁😉.

As an aside, I'd like to hear how the war has affected daily life for expats in Prague. Would that be an appropriate topic for your channel?
What place in Moravia did you choose? :)
Jen already made a video about the war, anyway, for an English-speaking person nothing has changed. People are now sensitive to Russian/Ukrainian language, which few people recognize.
btw. in the Czechia the war changed especially the mindset of the people and it can be seen in the laws, now covid is in the past because the war is more important.

And the psychotest is not mandatory, its up to your doctor.
Absolutely amazing video
