  • John Taylor, the current owner of Brown’s Hardware, describes the neighborhood landmark’s growth and change as Falls Church City transformed from a “sleepy village” to the city it is today. And as Christine explains, that transformation was intertwined with the history of race and school segregation in Northern Virginia.

Saw the Enanitos Verdes there years ago. Grew up on the Lake Street apartments with my grandma, who lived there since the 1960s. Her husband was USAAF. My dad spent his elementary years there.

I used to get dropped off at the State theatre with a couple friends on the weekend to see the latest movie, and so our parents could get a break for a while. My mother actually made me my own popcorn, and put it in a brown paper bag. Back in those days, the theatre didn't have a problem with that. My friends, however did- and would not be seen with me, until the lights went out. Of course, they all wanted my popcorn then! Lots of fun memories there, and spent most of the time on the balcony seats. Good times.
