Saw this film with zero expectations and was blown away. I am surprised it did not get wrong word of mouth recommendations. Maybe the people who will love this film are the people worried about rising omicron rates…. But, they just get everything so correct!
I agree. Didn't really know what to expect, definitely wasn't expecting it to be my favorite film of the year so far. Great story with stunning visuals, but the details are what truly make the film. Not really sure why it underperformed at the box office. A shame.
This movie was amazing. Robbert Eggers when he plan out to make a picture, it's always well-thought out. The cinematography is on point. I like how the characters in this world has an eye for an eye mentality. Flawed ideologies met reality type of thing... It's just great! This was a good breakdown about this movie. Keep it up! And stay honest. Even if you have a rant about the surrounding things about a movie (The Northman.) There will be always idiots grasping for straws. Nazism did it with Nietzsche. And for a longtime he was a no-no in colleges and universities. All because the sister of Nietzsche had a relationship with someone who where affiliated with the Third Reich. And she transcribed the essays of Nietzsche when he was in asylum. Long story short. Idiots always want claim something great, and they themself are below mediocrity. And Everything Everywhere All At Once is a must watch movie. Shout out from a Suriname man that lives in the Netherlands. Keep it up!
Thank you for sharing this. As you said people are going to claim things that don't belong to them until the end of time. I think its important we don't give credence to that. I'm also looking at why they are opting to claim this movie and thats the worse part. They dont care about the story or the culture, just the images. The Northman is a movie made for anyone. A movie made to enlighten people about a culture they may not know much about otherwise, not claim the culture as superior. As for the movie, you're absolutely right. Robert Eggers has easily become one of the best directors working today. His visions offer unique perspectives and tell equally as distinct stories. Loved this movie, can't wait to see what he does next. Peace to the Netherlands from California ✊🏾
I think this particular contingent of white guys you’re talking about, who idolize this film for its whiteness, will not only not understand what they just saw, but will be disappointed to learn that the actual descendants of this culture generally reject them, and are appalled at the connections American white supremacists want to make. Also they make this level of noise over every movie that has prominently starred a straight white man ever since Black Panther was released as if they’re looking for the next Great White Hope. This is something I’ve seen happen every time Black people make any kind of progress in some area, you’ll have those white men who want to find and laud a white version of whatever was just produced. And it’s not that the films they choose are bad films or racist (I loved plenty of them) but there is a very vocal contingent of white male critics who severely overhype these movies as the absolute greatest movies that have ever been made, and it makes me wonder if they’re acting like that because they’re still smarting from Black Panther. Anyway, I went into this movie expecting something not unlike The Lighthouse, which I mostly found unfathomable. This movie is much more accessible in its plot and themes than that one, with much the same sort of mood, which I appreciated. This is definitely going on my favorites list for this year, and I do appreciate that you didn’t overhype it, as I’ve seen in several other reviews. I love Viking movies, and shows, but I didn’t use any of those as measure of this film. I approached it from a genuine historical viewpoint, and I’m glad you did that too.
You elaborated on both the film and controversy perfectly. The connection to them fawning over The Northman because of the response Black Panther received is great and true. I think throughout history we've seen that time and time again Black and other ethnic minorities aren't allowed to have thier moment. Not just in film, but music, fashion, even physical traits. Those things however are hard to call exclusively their own becasue its well documemted that it isnt. The Northman and other movies like it however, have to be for them because it simply looks like they are on the surface. When in reality, to your point, they couldnt be any more wrong. As for your thoughts on the film, I agree completely. I loved it, but think if be doing a disservice if I hyped it up as one of the greatest movies of all time. I try to stay fairly realistic, but an 8.8 is pretty Dam good coming from me..lol thanks again for your thoughts on this!! ✊🏾
I thought this movie, the action, and the plot were all trash but you’ve thoroughly inspired me to give it another shot. Tbh I also didn’t realize it was the same director as other films I love! great video 😊
I understand. It's definitely a film that may not be for everyone, but I figured for those who may not like the story or the action, at least the visual experience would be unique enough to enjoy. Let me know what you think if you check it again! ✊🏾
The Northman is still on my radar and will give it a watch once it's on streaming hopefully. It looks great and your review was great. Thanks for addressing the B.S. surrounding it because some folks are just wack really (as a lefty person myself, I do find the handful of lefty criticisms baffling but those the white supremacists who are trying to co-opt the film are on another level of crazy). I LOVED Eggers' work on The Witch so I'm guessing the Northman will also employ a lot of slow, gradual building. Would you also recommend The Lighthouse? Lastly, hope you enjoy EEAAO. So far, it's my favorite film of 2022 but I'm hoping The Northman will give it a run for its money!
Right? I think the alt right and leftys are basically arguing the same thing when it cokes to this film. The rights claiming its for them and the left is basically saying its for them too and I couldn't disagree more. As someone who's pretty liberal myself, I didn't make the "white supremacy" connections at all when I first saw the movie..lol. But I'd love to know what you thinkbwhen you get around to checking it out. As for The Lighthouse. I would totally reccomend it. I will say it's probably his most difficult and least accessible film as its very strange and absurd, but in the best possible way. And even if you aren't into weird stuff, I'd still reccomend simply for the experience. But if you enjoyed the Witch I think you'd like The Lighthouse as well. Planning on watching Everything Everywhere asap, becasue I've heard nothing, bur good things. Always good hearing from you! 🙏🏾
The Northman is a great challenge to EEAAO. They both made my favorites list this year, along with The Batman, which is yet another movie that white supremacies were trying to lay claim to, that’s got nothing to do with them.
That's what I'm hearing. I will be checking thst out soon. And they're trying to take over Batman too? Lol He literally fights crime, like they would probably be who he targets lol. I'm hearing Top Gun is really good too.
Love this channel bro, I don't watch movies so these recaps are perfect 😂, I enjoy the personality on display with replaying the spear catch, totally me when I watch stuff 😂 Keep up the great work.
And yeah man its unfortunate, but I had to speak on it. That's the great thing about this platform, I can not only entertain and hopefully educate, but call out the wrong in the world when I need to. ✊🏾
I get what you mean here, however at the time, I think The Northman was one of the more original and well made films I had seen so far that year. Other Great movies were out and eventually ended up coming out both Hollywood and Foreign that ended up being better. It was still a great movie though and I actually watched it again at home the other day and may have liked it even better than the first. Original directing, unique storytelling, great action sequences, well acted all of those are hard to come by in a movie like this. But you are right, maybe its that good just by default because so many others fail. 🤷♂️
I am Swedish and although i enjoyed the movie and it's folklore and supernatural elements, i don't take pride in the idea of how Vikings pillaged and killed other Europeans like the English, Irish, French and Spaniish . And these white nationals need to open a history book. The Vikings had female warriors (shield maidens) and all were totally pagan and were among the last Europeans to switch to Christianity ,both of which i do applaud.
Folks slept on this frfr. For all the angry white guys mad at Thor for being "woke"... why didn't they go watch this? Damn shame.
Man foreal. Least they could've done was actually go see the movie. No reason it should've underperformed. 🙏🏾

@@itakeonmovies Top Gun: Maverick was surprisingly good and, IMHO, better than the original.

In full agreement with the rant section.

"Best Movie of 2022" is setting the bar very, very, very, low. HollyWood hasn't released a movie worth a crap in awhile now.

if you havent watched Vinland Saga, you wouldnt appreciate The Northman's epicness.. its like a mirror image of both story..
when the video end, i saw your picture on the bottom then i realised you are black. wow.. that is a very broad perspective on your view.
