What causes frustration? Two hearts that desperately need to become one but struggles over the obstacles which can be low barriers or mountains that appear to be too high to climb yet the emotions lying at the bottom of their souls keep stirring up into a frenzy that needs satisfaction! She understands the hurdles before him! She loves him "as is!" He can't fathom the depths of her love! He sees her as a strong, willful, determined woman, refusing to budge. In reality, she understands his dilemmas and remains true to her pledge of loyalty and someday maybe he will understand the frustrations that keep them apart! Know this dear heart, you have captured her, taken over her heart and the frustrations will disappear if ever that last hurdle has been cleared. You have won the battles and the war! The only thing left to do is a decision to claim the "spoils" of the valiantly fought war! You had her at "hello!" You alone, stand in your way!
The problem is that HE IS NOT ABLE TO MAKE LOVE. So the relationship has to be platonic and this tortures him. Ava looks terrible in this movie. Tyrone Power has presence; he's very hansome; but Mel Ferrer is mediocre. Godd, or excellent, was JOSÉ FERRER.
I don't blame the Girl she gave her all & more for the guy. She truly loved him & confessed it throughout till the very end. The guys at fault for not taking any action other than blaming everything on her
I suggest you wait 10 years and watch it again, there's a whole more serious story going on and (there's those character's thinking through their Lower Mind, aka Ego Mind, aka Adolescent Mind" and those through their "Higher Mind, aka Mature Mind , aka Adult Mind".) .
BTW, reading through the comments, it is Obvious the Younger Minds don't have any idea what impotence means, and/or they are preoccupied with the relationship drama, and havent a clue of the real story. Hemingway was brilliant, with lauering the various subjects that comprised the whole. + Those thinking through their Lower Mind and those living through their Higher Mind, more layers. The local scenery is terrible; and the music! The music is TERRIBLE. You missed having a really original music in the movie. Hemingway said that the whole part about the bulls was "abominable!"-.

It is a frustrated love affair...but Jake puts blame on Brett when we know he has not put all into the relationship that she obviously wants
Impotence is addressed here and by Hemingway the author that was groundbreaking for this point in literature and movies
poor audio upload...very poor.
Two years later,-1959--at 49 years old-Errol-Flynn--would be dead,-Dies "mid-orgasm"-wit his new 19 year old girlfriend=(My-Hero !!)--

Both Power and Flynn aged horribly.
Power not so much!
