- SPEM IN ALIUM by Thomas Tallis (c.1505-1585) - Performed by 40 Singers from around Australia.
Due to the current Covid-19 pandemic, choral singing in close quarters has been put on hold for the foreseeable future in most states and territories in Australia. However, this has provided a unique opportunity to turn this situation into something positive. 40 incredible singers from around Australia united together in a virtual, online context to perform one of the greatest pieces to sit within the choral music repertoire: Thomas Tallis’s epic 40-part motet Spem in Alium.

Only one word to say about this performance ... *WOW*!! No, make it two ... Awesome. :)
This is so uplifting. One of the world’s most beautiful works os art, and this performance embodies the healing power of music to overcome life’s adversities. A wonderful coming together in times of darkness.
Thank you so much! It is so heartening to hear that this rendition continues to give solace to people.
totally stunning
Thank you! 😊
I have always loved this piece. I love the way the people appear and disappear as their parts come and go. Makes one appreciate the complexity of the work all the more. Congrats to the many people who made this possible.
Thank you, Paul for your kind words. :-)
Almost impeccable!
Amazing- excellent use of modern technology. Well done to choristers and technicians.
Thank you so much, David! It was a huge effort from everyone, so your comment is greatly appreciated.
What a fabulous performance! The sound and the video mixing were so splendid - and very tricky as we are all currently finding out. Always wanted to sing this. Many thanks.
"Polyphony in extremis!" Absolutely superb and congratulations to all involved, with the mixing, editing and mastering (Abbey Studios no less) rising superbly to the demands of the music and the circumstances of the performance.
Absolutely beautiful - lifts the soul
I hope this wonderful group of singers will be able to release a commercial recording of this stunning piece.
The finest choral work ever and this is a great performance.
Thank you!
The same Andrew Fysh I was at school with?
amazing! who's the tosser who didn't like this?
Beautiful video and beautifully sung.
Thank you so much for your kind words. Please share it around! :-)
Could hear both of the Andrews Sisters in there! Lovely!
10/10 perfect! Such a beautiful presentation of a classic of sacred polyphony!
Thank you so much, Davide for your very kind response/review. Stay tuned for some more!
Would it be possible for you to publish all 40 individual tracks, perhaps at Creative Commons, GitHub, or Soundcloud? It would be of great academic and educational value, allowing students of polyphony and composition to hear how each part works individually, and together. The existing available midi tracks just aren't the same.
Hi Alex, it is a fantastic idea, but unfortunately I don't think this will happen, the cost per contract would be too expensive for me. All the best, Nick :-)
Thank you for making the effort, I needed a lift after a very difficult week and this has provided it.
Thank you so much for your lovely words. We are glad that it has given you the lift you needed! All the very best.
I loved this version. Touched my soul at this time. Deo gratias and thank you all so very much. My heart is glad.
This is amazing 💜
Thank you for your lovely comment! So happy you enjoyed this.
Bagus sekali. Amazing song. Amazing singers. Amazing video. Have a very blessed Easter 2023. Thanks God, covid 19 is over...
What a piece of work. Great job.
Oh my, how beautiful!
Going from black and white to colour at 7:26 at the natural pause is a stroke of genius - perfect for the finale.
This was fantastic. I love the way you have the singers arranged to show the structure of the piece. If I was to ask for anything more, it would be stereo mixing that places you in the centre of a semicircle of choirs, so the visual structure is replicated in the stereo mix.
Hello Somebody Else! Thanks for your lovely comment. What a fantastic idea!! :-) Maybe sometime in the New Year we can re-image and re-master. All the best for the Christmas season to you! Nick
Bravo ❤️
Thank you so much!
Brilliant! Loved it. So glad you did this.
Glorious! Just gloriously uplifting, thank you and bravo.
Completely wonderful! What a brilliant idea and a stunning performance from everyone involved. Thank you all so much for bringing a big smile to my ISO day! ps. Who gave the thumbs down? Someone from the NT?!?
Thank you! I’m glad it made your day a bit brighter! :-) Re: thumbs down - meh, can’t please everyone, I guess!Haha.

So totally my pleasure!!
Absolutely stunning, loved and savoured every single second of this truly heavenly banquet.
Thanks so much for your kind words, Frederik! Feel free to share everywhere! ;-)
Thank you, thank you, oh so much. And i even recognised some of the faces. The mix was superb.
I have never put my hope in any other
but in Thee, God of Israel
who canst show both wrath and graciousness,
and who absolves all the sins
of man in suffering
Lord God,
Creator of Heaven and Earth
Regard our humility

Totally stunning
Thank you! 🙂
Spine-tingling and inspirational, Nick........bravo!!
Thank you very much for your kind words, Greg! All the singers worked very hard. I could not have done it without the support of so many.
True!
That's quite a feat to pull off! Amazing, thank you - and (so Zoom DOES have its uses lol) for the first time it's possible to see so clearly which singers in which of the 8 choirs is singing at any one time. Love it, thank you!
Thank you for your kind comments! In fact, it wasn't recorded in Zoom - everyone recorded their individual parts (including rests!) and then it was edited in Adobe Premiere and audio mixed and mastered separately. A painstakingly arduous process, but well worth it in the end! Thanks again for your kind words. So glad you enjoyed it!
Absolutely sublime singing of an amazing choral masterpiece. All my thanks to all involved.
Beautiful. Uplifting in these difficult times. Thank you to all who participated in bringing this to us in our lounge rooms.
Thank you for your very kind words. Glad that it bought you some peace today. All the best.
Absolutely stunning - thank you all...
Wonderful!!! Thanks so much to everyone involved!

Amazing how they all came together at 4:49!
Thomas Tallis is timeless as this beautifully performed masterpiece demonstrates. Truly Heavenly in every sense. Thank you all.
Thank you so much for your kind words, Robert!
@@nickcaddick4209 Just briefly, Nick, a friend in Austria told me how upset she was because her Australian friend, who was finding life to be a little too hard, was in an Adelaide hospital. Some hours later I heard this (my favourite choral piece) and it was as though you were all singing to give your fellow Aussie hope (you are singing to give us ALL hope) so I sent it to my friend and she hopes to send it to him in hospital. I wish you all a peaceful Christmas and a New Year free from worry. Thank you again for this gorgeous piece. Robert
@@robertm7071 Hi Robert, a response like this makes the "giving SOMETHING to people" so utterly worthwhile. This is the true reason to tackle a project like this, and to perform this music. Your story has touched my heart, and I'm sure all the singers feel likewise. My heart goes out to your friend, and most certainly to her friend in Adelaide. If there is one word that should define this year, it has to be "Hope". With all my very best wishes to you and your loved ones for a joyous and peaceful Christmas and a Happy New Year! Nick :-)
@@nickcaddick4209 Dear Nick, my friend in Austria is deeply moved by your comments, and I am touched by them too. She will send this wonderful video to her friend and pass on to him your good wishes. Thank you and God bless you all. P.S. Lastly, I have a family connection with Australia. My ancestor’s brother went to Tasmania for seven years in the 1840s and decided to stay, becoming a boatbuilder. Unfortunately the trip out there wasn’t exactly first class - it was a transport ship. He burned down a farmer’s barn in Essex. His descendants still live there. God bless you and have a happy and healthy life. Robert (Merchant) in England.
Wonderful.
Thank you, Margaret! Huge amount of work from all involved x
Thank you!
Simply Brilliant!
Thank you
Amazing, Nick, and all you singers. Love it!

Thank you this is great. Where was the video shot?
Hi Anna, glad you enjoyed this! The time lapse is of the Aurora Australis over the Derwent River in Tasmania.
Thanks. Gorgeous. Will be on my list when we can come from Melbourne!

Lovely, but are there no boys in Australia these days?
Don’t be picky! This is remarkable, it lifts our spirits, Ive sung it many times, with, and without , boys. This is special
In an age where being young seems to be everything to some people, I feel that older singers with a maturity only the experience of life can bring , are able to add real understanding and depth to this extraordinary piece.
Why is it sped up? It takes away from the resting feeling that the words convey and it seems less of a prayer. Beautiful voices and great blending, but a bit chaotic at this speed. The last section was glorious!
Thank you for the very positive response, Thucydides! :-) I'm not sure that it is "sped up", the tactus may be slightly quicker than most interpretations - but I don't think that detracts from the overall meaning of the text, either.
