Back around 1975 I not only got to hear Buddy but to meet him as well. His gig was over and after some minutes of talking he said "I want to hear you play.'" I sad down at his drums and played. He could tell instantly what a big influence he was on my playing. Afterwards he invited me to sit down at a table with him. He ordered us both a drink, gave me a drum lesson and gave me a pair of his drumsticks (which I have mounted to this day). He was SO nice to me. That meeting was the highlight of my musical career. RIP Mr. Rich.
By the way Buddy used Remo Diplomats on all his heads.
Great story , fantastic memory for you
Thanks 4 sharing!
Great story that is. Do you recall what cymbals he used? In this particular video they look like A Zildjians. I just assumed he used K’s, but in this video they don’t look or sound like K’s. I think they sound great.
When he picks the towel up he’s all like “man I’m getting too old for this shit”
I mean, he did develop heart problems after this solo
@@crunked6674 he literally put his heart into this solo
"Our new Constitution is now established, and has an appearance that promises permanency; but in this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death, taxes and that Buddy Rich was the greatest drummer who ever lived. -- Bejamin Franklin
HE WAS 64 HERE!!!
Yep
This is so cool
Seen him live at The Grand Theatre de Quebec....Live.......1983.....FANTASTIC.....i hope i didnt get the date wrong....it was awile back.....but never forgot his big bang experience.......what a night.....rick.
And u Can see he gave everything he had ...at the end of the song he shows that he surfers a little bit
Super Mario 64
it's great that the best drummer ever got to play the music he style loved for his entire career.
I saw Buddy live once. I was front row and not 12 feet from his drum kit. He started off by throwing his sheet music up in the air and playing. The orchestra scramled to catch up, flipping through pages of sheet music. All the while Buddy was smiling and laughing. His dexterity and finger control was amazing. I focused on his hands which were a blurr. He had heart and a passion for good music which will live forever in his recording and video. I wish I could have seen Gene Krupa!!
I remember buddy seeing me in the front row. I must have had a look of absolute awe cause he just played that much harder smiling the whole time and laughing.
MrAnimal1971 I wish I could have been there. Lucky!
You have been so lucky MrAnimal1971... I have always been impressed by his left hand's tecnique ... Buddy Rich has power , precision, great sound ... he is the model for everyone who wants to start playing jazz drums... more than Krupa , Jo Jones or Roach ...in all interviews I've read up to now, all modern drummers have
played tribute to him ( Gadd, Omar Hakim, Erskine ecc ecc )
Faded
Me too....Krupa would have been a real treat...saw Rich in a local College theater....what a show....NO MICROPHONES......
5:05 its simple, and the same time the best part of this awesome solo!
No,i think the best part is from3:10 to 7:59
Hands down the most gifted drummer ever.
Buddy, was quite simply the greatest drummer the world had ever seen! Young drummers look & listen to the master at work, As said before we will never see his like again.
Nope
Definitely beats any modern drummer. Don't get me wrong, modern drummers can be pretty badass, but they can't play like buddy rich did.
@@crunked6674 Chris Coleman and Larnell Lewis will Shit all over buddy rich.
@@JonYen69 buddy rich played what they play in his fuckin sleep bud.
@@JonYen69 bet you a slipknot fan
The phrasing beauty, the absolute delicacy, the absolute power, the miraculously poetic hi hat playing, the flawless consistency throughout the whole thing... control, artistry, dexterity, delicacy, power, speed and consistency. He had it all (and everything composed on the spot!!!).
What makes this even more unbelievable is he begins to have his heart attack starting around 6:02 ...and you can see the strained look on his face. He KEPT PLAYING the solo until the song was done. Then and only then was he rushed to the hospital. The ultimate entertainer and the embodiment of "The Show Must Go On". His commitment to the show is unmatched.
Rich mastered drumming in many different ways, and I think that's why he's so highly regarded in the drumming world. There will always be drummers out there with more speed, precision, showmanship, or dexterity, but probably not all of those things at once.
He was definitely living with constant back pain and it literally hurt to play drums for him by this point but Buddy Rich is the best to ever hold sticks in my opinion. There are many other great drummers but in Buddy's big band jazz style he was pushing style and ability forward in a major way. So much control it is insane. Moving from doubles to triplets to singles flawlessly while adding ghost notes and other complex, technical elements and really using the whole kit the entire time.
On 6:40 believe or not my jaw dropped to the freakin floor cause that is nearly impossible to get that accuracy on that rapid constant single stroke roll on the snare drum. It sounded like almost a buzz roll instead of a single stroke roll timbre.
This never gets old
Rarely is what it means to be "the best" so clearly defined
I think this is the 'impossible buddy rich drum solo' vid in ultra quality - that vid has 15M views, yet is much inferior in quality.
CV yes, it is.
CV exact man: such an incredible strength, in the end of his life, with his health disease 🤩🤩
@@mahmoudmusicalvid8706 Rumor has it that he had a mild heart attack during this performance. I saw it in a blog once. still played like an animal.
@@kenrubio1200 no way dude
During the impossible solo Buddy actually had a heart attack. He was taken immediately to the hospital
I keep coming back to this. This is the most amazing display of physical ability ever done by a human.
Every time I see this video... which has got to be around 20-25 times now. All I say is... what a SOAB'n talent. This guy is my idle and will always be. I know he was a real SOAB at times, but the guy could back up what he demanded. No time for laziness. Buddy's work ethic was just superb. All he knew was to work, which is something not a lot of younger people know the meaning of today. Every now and then when I get a little bit lazy and I watch this video, it just reminds me to get back to work. Thanks for the work hard... inspiration Buddy!!!
Ferocious! Absolute thrill to watch Buddy and hear those amazing and perfect phrases.
wow amazing sound and mix!
Realmente impresionante !!! De otro planeta...
100% untouchable at the top of the drummers tree. Colaiuta is a distant second.
+jayrobb9 I'd put Dave Weckl and Steve Gadd up above Colaiuta. But that's my opinion
no mater how many times I see this it always impresses me buddy rich what a man what a drummer RIP buddy you'll always be remembered
AWESOME......the beauty of this movie soundtrack......perfect.
buddy was a beast on drum! the best!
Just magnificent piece of music ❤
Absolutely incredible and incredibly difficult! Buddy at his best!
Great audio, great video. A wonderful tribute to likely the most powerful influence in all of jazz. Thanks for posting!
One of the very few drummers that could hold the entire audience's attention throughout his amazing solos.
i seen buddy rich on the muppets he did a drum battle with animal i had to look him up and it brought me here and this song is instantly added to my playlist along with many more to come i am thoroughly amazed at this mans talent !
I would check out one called Cherokee from 1965 a couple of solos that will blow your mind
Mark Joe I would recommend you look up Joe Morello too
Man his cross-overs are awesome. This why Buddy Rich is the best.
There's just no drummer out there who can come up to power with Buddy.
When you see him rolling with one hand while his left hand goes around the kit.
Also rolling the snare so fast his sticks are just a blur. I mean you could just go and
on about what a master he is. Allow he passed away on 2nd April 1987 he is still the master of all drummers. Well enough said.
So true...I wish I could have seen him live but I wasn't fortunate enough.
The one and only. The greatest drummer the World has ever seen. Watch !!!!!
I can’t say I’ve seen other drummers or bands on RUclips play this..
Talk about playing in pain…..amazing..
master of masters
Who else wants to spank the dead-fish of an audience and the fake applause?
THE GREATEST DRUMMER TO HAVE EVER LIVED!!!
Unbelievable !! Brilliant Performance !
Incredible and incredibly difficult
great quality on this post - thanks
Com certeza um grade músico de todos os tempos
..a lot of that hi hat work are forms of paradiddles..wicked hard at that tempo,an CLEAN,at 69yrs old too...
This is great quality on such a great video!
Without a doubt, one of the greats.
I can do nothing but shake my head.
Era o meu sonho ser um grande batera. restou a mim apenas admirar um dos maiores de todos os tempos . BRAVO
RESPECT. Buddy had a heart attack during this solo.he saved by the bell.but he didnt quite until the end of the show.thats the spirit. R.I.P BUDDY RICH.You are sorely missed.
he had a heart attack during this solo ????
he didn't, he had signs of a heart attack during the performance but not an actual one
Minutes after this solo he was on his way to surgery for heart failure, the Doctors told him he was literally two seconds away from death and if not for their emergency intervention he would have passed.
Incredible Buddy Rich!!!
I believe no drummer alive today has the finesse of Mr. Buddy Rich. He settled for nothing less than perfection.
This solo from Buddy at 65 years young is EPIC galactical!!!
Buddy Will ALWAYS BE THE BEST!
Hands down one of the best drummers in the music business.
Not one of the best drummers in the business, but was & still is, years after his passing, "THE GREATEST DRUMMMER EVER" !
Rockin' T.C. Preach
one of? he's it.
The best bro
Eric Underwood 'One of'? Try that sentence again, my friend...
4:26 that one handed drum roll!!
Hexti i know this is an old comment but his left is basically playing doubles and the bass drum fills the gap making triplets.
He can do a drum roll with one hand faster than most drummers can with two.
Always will be a Living Legend
monstrueux ! Immense respect !
E'semplicemente MAGNIFICO
Buddy Rich, to put it simply and accurately was the"Einstein of Drummers". There is no one who even comes close to his talent!!
Agreed, no one comes close.I remember watching a Buddy Rich Gene Krupa Drum Off
on tv when I was a kid. To this day I think BR held back as not to make GK look bad on tv.
I used to play the drums when I was younger and BR was my idol.
This men is a legend...
The Greatest of ALL Time , hands down
There Is no one that can compare to this Mastery.
The best of the best .
is incredible!!!
Great grandfather hit the drum ❤❤❤❤ I love him
He came, he saw, he conquered.
Merci Monsieur Buddy Rich
it defies all logic, you know you are seeing it but you can't believe it.
Truly the best.
Are you kidding me? Buddy is the best my 56 years
Have experienced.
Breathtaking
At 5:43 left hand roll...then the fill after, Mr. Rich what a talent..God Bless You..
Yes, that roll has always amazed me. He played at least one concert with one hand when injured and he could make it sound like two.
What really sets him apart though is that some drummers have speed and their moves are called efficient, but Rich had the pounding power in addition to the speed.
That's nothing. Just look at 4:25 onwards. Now THAT is impressive.
Buddy Is the better drummer of sol the times! Forever and ever!!!
That's absolutely INSANE!!!!!!!!!
Great example for us. We need to play rudiments and all this combination. This video is the best school )))
Best Of The Best
...and that, ladies and gentlemen is how it's done.
Priceless
Best drummer ever !
Pure Magic
Fantastic
Love it.
God of the drums
This guys gonna be famous one day
Le meilleur des meilleurs de tout les univers connus et inconnus!
Holy shit that was insane
Magical
me lo encontré al azar , increíble.
He's da BOMB.......!!!!
Buddy and Frankie, sorely missed...
Not really, his band mates hated Buddy.
Magnificent!!!!!!!!!!!!
Time traveler. Master of Time. Completely in control. Bad mother lover!
you will never see talent in this league for over a hundred years, Sinatra maybe 200 years - class
This is why to this day Buddy is still known as MR DRUMS there is nobody or will be
anybody playing with this intensity and skill at this age PERIOD. I only see Steve Smith possibly trying later in his life trying to keep up the pace but Steve doesn't have
the anger or get pissed at himself for underperforming
Underrated Saxophone solo...
fenomenal
BEST EVER!
The best!
Yes
Gênio!
0:51...out of this world!
Looks to be 100 degrees there. No wonder buddy suffered a heart attack after the concert
