  • As a fan of the 1981 animated cult film "Heavy Metal", I have a great love for Elmer Bernstein's amazing orchestral score. Unfortunately, most people only seem to have heard the official 12-track score, which contain less than half of the original music from the movie. As such, I'm now uploading the complete version of the soundtrack, containing all compositions from the film, and in higher quality than the official version. Enjoy!

"And the spirit of Taarna is transferred across the universe to a new Defender. And the power of evil is contained for another generation. And a new Taarakian is born to protect the next."

Oh, my beloved Taarna... We will remember you for your graceful beauty, your unshakable bravery, your tireless dedication, and your immortal sacrifice. You not only fought, but you fought well and justice reaped the merciful fruits of your selfless labor. It is my greatest wish that you and your winged companion eternally lay at ease in a peace worthy of your legendary deeds. Taarna... *forever.*

2:11 to final, a perfect fitting send off wake score to beloved director/producer Ivan Reitman who past away Feb 13th 2022! He did produced this movie and the upcoming UHD 4K will feature a new 4K scan from the original 35mm camera negative supervised by him as i can't wait to see and a new retrospective featurette on how this movie inspired many filmmakers and actors who are fans even since they were kids as i preordered my copy and those were the last things he did along with producing Ghostbusters Afterlife as he went out on a good note with those things.
    We'll miss you Ivan, RIP

Watched a DVD copy I found 2nd hand recently and was blown away by it (saw it in 1997 but wasn't that impressed due to high expectations from 1981 when was too young to see it) The music, especially the whole Taarna sequence, is beyond incredible and can be described as truly beautiful - Thank you for making it available to enjoy again and again!

I appreciate Love, Death, and Robots because it's new stories not based on anything, but with their resources, they need to adapt a full-length Taarna film. If you don't know, Taarna's an adaptation of Moebius' Arzach, the definitive comic published by Heavy Metal. Arzach is traditionally a man, but he reincarnates in many warriors of different names, races, and genders across space and time. So while they could make a film called "Taarna," it could still be an anthology film as it would follow many incarnations of the character exploring different worlds.

This soundtrack exceeded my expectations. Film music has it's own limitations - short themes and such. Listening to this reminds me of a lot of other (film) composers like Miklós Rózsa and maybe even Ralph Vaughn Williams. The tunes are very appropriate for a fantasy film - I wish the whole movie was Taarna!

Yup a unique score, a shame we don't get epic scores like this anymore

Oh man, Elmer Bernstein was one of a kind, brillant film composer until He died. His last Score was nominated for an Oscar, when I was 80 I think. I love for example Hoodlum, sadly not really a good directed Film with a good cast, very good even. But the Music of Elmer Bernstein is just so beautiful and good, should have a better movie to it.

You want to check out the full Dark Crystal score if you haven't heard it. That' one sounds titanic in scale. This one also is an all time classic. Should be more like this now in films.

Awesome scores and 2 classic fantasy films! they don't make epic memorable fantasy scores like those, Excalibur, Willow and Star Wars anymore
And speaking of Dark Crystal, did you see the prequel show?

Maybe taarna was more like a kamikaze pilot in the end. And besides I think what taarna did was more like a sacrifice than suicide. She sacrifices herself to destroy evil. Just like Russell case did with his jet in independence day. I don't want to think of taarna as suicide bomber. They're evil and taarna isn't evil.

    • @im0rtel

Martin Guzman the symbol of the sacrifice was pretty obvious. nobody in their right mind would call that a suicide attempt.
only a overfed american would call a japanese kamikase's sacrifice , a suicide attempt.
