For General Info, The units are: 3 SD40-2s in the lead, an MK5000C, an SD40-2, and a GP38? The helpers were 2 SD40-2s, an F45, SD20, and two more SD40-2s. (There were no GEs on this train!) The Cowl unit was an ex. GN. The locomotives sounded like they were in full throttle, and the SD20 was creating quite a smoke show, and a great sound! Great video, love the sound of those 645 and the lone 567 engines! Utah Railway manages trains great, and 36000+ HP can handle it!
Excellent catches. Great shots of the rails people like me can only dream of, or play with on a layout at home. Here on the East Coast, near the ocean...the stuff you enjoy is only a dream for us. Thanks for the great work...you love.
True grunt, am becoming a down under rail fan. The sheer size and power, not forgetting the sound of those diesels, all 12 of them is quite staggering. Would be curious to know how many thousand tons of coal they are hauling. Great video.
Nice camera work. The best shot for me was the "S" (3:35) where the train was going away. Don't see that kind of action here in the flat lands of Texas.
You just can't beat mountain railroading Nethanel! The smells, the sounds, the feel it in your chest, of locomotives working their hearts out. I'll take mountain railroading over flatland 70 mph running anyday. Thanks for watching...
I understand! LOL. A lot of railroads had crappy maintenance, and some cut them back to keep the old girls running a few more years. Maybe I should have put, Advertised HP. Thanks for watching...
What great Emd sounds. The emd 645. The Cat powerd Morrson Knueudson also has a sound of it own. Not many sold. They have now been repowered to EMD engines.
Its a shame those MK5000C's where repowered rob. I would have loved to hear a solid set of them in notch 8 pulling these grades. I bet it was just fantastic. One thing for sure! That will never happen now, sorry to say. Thanks for watching...
have enjoyed this footage many times, the way those locos just sit at notch 8 churning out horsepower, hauling that coal train over the summit. Early railway folk would be impressed with how far trains have come, although am somewhat concerned with the carbon footprint of using 12 locos to haul coal over a hill, but great footage anyway
Amazing video... A mechanical symphony.. So far all the comments are along the same lines as what I write as well. Good video skills and thanks for sharing also. Does anyone stop to consider the incredible behind the scenes efforts and impacts that go on to ensure we all have a comfortable pain free effortless existence??? I think more people should know what goes into providing the goods services and raw materials that we all take for granted..
The only thing missing was a couple of dining cars after the first & second sets, heh heh... believe me, I like many others I'm sure would've paid top dollar to get aboard in this consist. ;P
Your not kidding. I sure am glad I had the change to catch the last year of Tennessee Pass when it was still being used. I hope that they reopen it someday, but it doesn't look good. Thanks for watching...
wow,,,good vidio,,i wouldent like to be woken up at 3am in the morning by that thing,,,,lol,,i live next to railroad tracks but the trains are not that big,,may be 2 or 3 locos at the most,,,thanks for poasting,,,
Questions; Do any/some/all of the helper locomotives have crews? How are non-crewed locomotives controlled? Does the engineer in the lead locomotive make the calls on power and braking? (Is he/she the "captain" of the train?)
Helpers are manned units with usual radio contact between the crews during opperation. Units that are un-manned and are controlled by computer contact are called DPU's and are controled from the headed end crew alone. Thanks for watching...
Yes! I hate their scheme, and they're monopolizing everything! They've even purchased and absorbed Rail America and half of the Canadian Rail Link! Even what's left of the AN (Australia National)!
I doubt there was much loss there as all of the locomotives prime movers were Turbocharged or Supercharged, they really help them breath at high altitude, so there wouldn't be much difference in HP.
Google MK5000/MK50-3 for a full explanation. They're quite a unique locomotive. It's neither a GE cab, nor is it an EMD loco. A Caterpillar 3612 rated at 5000HP was the prime mover initially. MK-Rail only built a handful of them. Later, they were redone with an EMD 16-645 rated at 3500HP due to reliability issues with the Cat motor and Kato alternator combo.
They usually have anywhere between 110 to 130 cars (wagons) and each car can hold 100 tons. So that is a pretty big train. Here in the states, they run huge trains. Here is one I got passing my house three weeks ago. It has 186 cars (wagons). Thanks for watching...ruclips.net/video/EpDyq1jrC9A/видео.html
For the layman here, what's the advantage of running all of those units together? Why not 2 sets independent of one another, you know 2 ea. 3x3's? Don't get me wrong, this is one of my favorite rail videos, I was just curious.
Animallllll, LoL muito bom, belas imagens meu querido desconhecido. Show de bola, aqui no brasil falta um pouco de atrevimento por parte das empresas. Abraço
Thank you Tim. Glad you enjoyed it. That black unit was ex-llinois Central. I think it started out as an SD9 or 18, and rebuit as an SD24 or something. There where several mines on the line out of Martin. One by one they shut down. Not sure if the mines were played out, or just lack of orders. I do remember crews telling me it was low BTU coal. So maybe the poor grade it was.
It is definitely impressive but running three times the amount of units than NS,CSX or BNSF on a Coal train plus the maintenance costs must not leave a big profit running this kind of train !! ??
El seguro de hacer un trabajo duro en las calificaciones. Suena increíble. Me alegro de que lo disfrute y gracias por mirar ...The sure do work hard on them grades. It sounds amazing. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching...
Back in the 90's the units were maintained very well but when the G&W took over that stopped so your wrong all the sd40's had 3600hp and the 9013 had 3200hp
the prime mover in an SD40-2 (dynamic braking) is not capable of 3600hp. At most an SD40 would make 3000, and thats not at altitude. Please provide information on where your data of 3600 hp came from.
Leave the zoom alone, please !! Pick a distance and stay there so we can watch. Shakey videos are not the best either, get a tri pod. Steady cameras make great videos.
Thanks for your input Harold. But the video was only secondary to me taking 35 mm slides. The video was just extra to record the scene so I can watch it. I figured I would share these old films with everyone, of past days that can NEVER be repeated. So after almost 128000 views of this clip, and to have ONE critic, that's not bad. Just sit back and enjoy Harold, and don't be so critical. You'll never see this again. Besides! How many videos do you have posted? Thanks again...

Such incredible power. Just the sound alone is cool. That must've been awesome to be there watching.
Excellent catches. Great shots of the rails people like me can only dream of, or play with on a layout at home. Here on the East Coast, near the ocean...the stuff you enjoy is only a dream for us. Thanks for the great work...you love.

The best freigth train video I have ever seen........... it's full of life,
There's some mountain railroading for ya! Great sound capture! Thanks for sharing this.

Oh that lovely sound!!! Superb video, thanks for sharing!
Your second vantage point is my absolute favorite part on Soldier Summit. Just heavenly.
And lol to the fact that the SD20 is the loudest thing in that helper consist.
Those things made a racket!
There are so many neat places up there. I hope some day I can go back, but it won't be the same. Thanks for watching...
El mejor video de un tren de carga que existe, espectacular !!!!!!!!!!!!, DRAMATICO !!!!!!!!!!!
LONG LIVE EMD!!! That Notch-8 sound is so hard it makes me want to the gym and lift weights!
LOL. Lift away. Thanks for watching...

Drivin' Soldier Summit countless times. Lot of Action day and night. Little 'Helper' was kept busy 'back in the day' :>)
Amazing video...

Truly an amazing show, a really, really big show !
That it is Tim. Never to be repeated. All coal mining has stopped on the Utah, sorry to say. Thanks for watching...
fantastic shot,I had to put the volume at MAX..very nice sight seeing
Wow, a GP35 trailing at the end?! Awesome!
That's why I used to go camping in price river canyon.
Great Video, wish we had that number of locos on trains in Britain.
Very cool, what an awesome display of power, thanks for the post.
That it was Bob! Nothing like it, and you could feel it in your chest when they roared past. Thanks again for watching...
12 locos,,,at full throttle climbing,,,wow,,,,the fuel consumption 1800 gallons/hour!! in liters 6840 liters/hour.
Fenomenal the EMD...👏👏👏
this is American railroading at its very best pure grunt and muscle a thing we don't get in the uk
Very well said Ian. See what your missing! You need to make a trip. Thanks for watching...
Beautiful vídeo...
Beautiful train..
👏👏👏.
Thanks Luiz. Glad you enjoyed it.
You know it smells GOOD in that cut!
No doubt about!!!
Woooow that was alot of diesel that was burned during this video! Great catch i wish we had stuff like that in Europe!
Great video! That is some beautiful country out there.
Epic video Jack, thanks for sharing.
Thank you brother. Glad you enjoyed it...
jackmp294.5™ anytime Jack!
Cool! Love them old Beast pulling.
They sure did sound great. Not like today. They ment business. Thanks for watching...
The only thing missing was a couple of dining cars after the first & second sets, heh heh... believe me, I like many others I'm sure would've paid top dollar to get aboard in this consist. ;P
Funny how this is all a walk in the park compared to the TP and Saluda!
Sounds like there is some wheel slip due to the engines reving down? And NREX is getting its living guts pushed out lol...
It was original built as a Southern SD24, But later rebuilt as a SD20. Thanks for watching...
Exactly UP1373. And all EMD power, except for one 5000hp CAT. Thanks for watching...
what a huge lash-up, 12 locos?
They where going to town up the grade. Nothing was slowing that coal drag down. Thanks for watching...
Shades of DRGW action on Tennessee Pass
Your not kidding. I sure am glad I had the change to catch the last year of Tennessee Pass when it was still being used. I hope that they reopen it someday, but it doesn't look good. Thanks for watching...
wow,,,good vidio,,i wouldent like to be woken up at 3am in the morning by that thing,,,,lol,,i live next to railroad tracks but the trains are not that big,,may be 2 or 3 locos at the most,,,thanks for poasting,,,
AHHHH yahhhh. BUT! Your bike is about 30 lbs. This train is about15000 tons! That just MIGHT make a difference. Thanks for watching...
Mine Favourite train of all time!!!!!!!! GREAT awsome!!!!!!

Which unit in the second set is making all of the chuga chuga chuga sounds, the former IC unit?
VERY excellent video!
OK, so what's the cowl unit? Ex-SF?
The SD40-2, a Real Man's locomotive!
I like the sounds!!!! WOW! But the railroad could use some AC traction motors!
I reset the titles PeteM. They should be easier to find now. Soldier Summit Grade 2-1/2% should find all 4 now. Thanks for watching...
Yes! I hate their scheme, and they're monopolizing everything! They've even purchased and absorbed Rail America and half of the Canadian Rail Link! Even what's left of the AN (Australia National)!
From the sound of the engine I could sworn that they were turbine engine's were they? I counted 13 engine units in all was there more on this train?
All of the diesel engines have turbochargers, but they are still piston engines.
I doubt there was much loss there as all of the locomotives prime movers were Turbocharged or Supercharged, they really help them breath at high altitude, so there wouldn't be much difference in HP.
Awesome sound!
Super awesome power!!!!----LOVE IT!!!
10-3-2018
Did that coal train have 12 engines? 6 on the head end
and 6 pushing? How heavy was
that train?
If you could count the hopper cars. Then figure each one has 100 tons of coal times the number of cars
Not SD40-2's, straight SD40's, the Utah Railway only had SD40's not the dash 2 model.
GE safety cab on an EMD?... Interesting
where?

if the rain is present,,,adverse traction pulling,,,more slipping probability.... how many wagons have this train??? 60....70,or more??

Your video work is incredible. Who is the blackjack in the second flank and why no more mining ?
Thank you Tim. Glad you enjoyed it. That black unit was ex-llinois Central. I think it started out as an SD9 or 18, and rebuit as an SD24 or something. How they manage to sincronice the pulling effort on 12 engines so the pull evenly ?. What a sound, you can feel all this power.
the sound of power!!
a great location to be in :)
To be exact, 36,600 HP
Headphone volume to MAXIMUM POWER!
I was caught in the middle of a railroad track... imagine
Aren't there some SD35's in this mix?
Thanks nkproad777, i didn't know that.
12 diesel locomotives or just one Chevy Silveraydo
awesome !
If you ran a 3x3 it would cost the railroad twice as much $ operating 2 crews. One can do the job.
It is definitely impressive but running three times the amount of units than NS,CSX or BNSF on a Coal train plus the maintenance costs must not leave a big profit running this kind of train !! ??
Prog X Depends on the money earned from the cargo.
MK5000 headlight was on
Is elevation taken into account for HP?
Talk about testosterone on wheels! :)
Thats for sure!!! Gotta love it Hyoe! The ground was shaking when these babies rolled past. Thanks for watching...
Got to agree Awesome
The utah was a great place to work..... The GW however sucks.
Lot's of HP!!!
son de guerra las máquinas para subir y bajar the Montain good. film
El seguro de hacer un trabajo duro en las calificaciones. Suena increíble. Me alegro de que lo disfrute y gracias por mirar ...The sure do work hard on them grades. It sounds amazing. Glad you enjoyed it and thanks for watching...
if you listen closely you hear a ge screamin lol
That squeeeelll?? is it slipping?
I think it's the friction on the inner side of the rails from the wheel flanges.
I agree! I HATE the G&W!
EMD Power 👍👍👍👍👍
If there were any GEs on this train, they would most likely malfunction.
Let's see how you and your bike do, pulling 150K tons behind you up hill. Then we can talk.
I can promise that it wasnt even close to that kind of HP,,,, Utah didnt maintain them that well!!!!!!
Back in the 90's the units were maintained very well but when the G&W took over that stopped so your wrong all the sd40's had 3600hp and the 9013 had 3200hp

ok Brazil São Paulo
ohh haha 36000hp. my bike is one human power and i get faster than that =)
