I've been shifting manually for 20+ years as a long haul driver, and I decided to start driving local to the Los Angeles area daily. I'll tell you right now, I am driving a 2014 Cascadia with the Ultrashift, and in LA traffic, I THANK GOD everyday that I have the Automatic. You young pups will appreciate it too once you get a few years of traffic under your belts.....:)
I have driven 6 speed to 18 speed manual transmissions for 12 years now. I just started driving with this SmartShift auto and I LOVE it! It took a bit to get use to it, but now I never wanna drive manual trans again. How can people complain about something that makes driving easier? I'm sure these whiners probably complained when horses were replaced with the engine, too.
We Drive the Volvo I-Shift in Europe since 2002, and it's getting better every Year. Now, with the new Volvo FH 12, this automatic Gearchanging is no longer an option, but instead you have to order especially for a Stick-shift... As a long time Truck Driver, I can assure everyone, it saves your Arm and keeps your Eyes on the Road. Altough many in the States and Canada have something against Auto-shift, we in Europe love it !
I drove one of these last year. Our company rented trucks through penske. Main complaints about it. No clutch pedal, very scary. Slow slow shifting even in manual mode (We hauled cabinets, very light.) I did a lot of deliveries to tight spots such as job sites, inner cities, etc. trans was way too slow to switch from R to L visa versa. Also with no clutch pedal I had little control where I really needed it in tight spots where the truck would actually lunge forward and backward (I even tried with left foot on brake, right on fuel pedal.) In summation. I told them NEVER AGAIN! Unless they wanted me to hit cars which I had literally an inch on either side.
Which one is better? (1) AutoManual or Automatic Transmission. (2) Caterpillar C16 engine on Freighliner or Mark trucks which one is better. Please I need your ideas
Looks like you have a clutch pedal? So do I, why I don't know since its an automatic trans. So I have a question.. When you're coming to a stop and you want to switch to neutral, do you need to press in the clutch before you can switch to neutral? Or is it OK to just switch without the clutch?
I drive from these for work, I thought transmission was slipping because in reverse and first gear it would go opposite direction if you weren't on gas or breaks , mechanic just told me today it was a manual that shifts itself, I always assumed it was a slapstick automatic or something, blew my mind
Reading htese posts reminds me of a story my father used to tell, when the U.S. auto makers started offering more and more auto transmissions on to cars and trucks the old farts didn't like it. Said it would never catch on, the autos sucked cause a piece of machinery couldnt be that smart. Look where we are now. It's just about impossible to get a stick in certain autos. Trucks will be this way in a few years when the old farts get out and retire.
I drive an automatic 13 spd. 2014 freightliner cascadia with the smartshift just like in this truck. I will drive either manual or auto. The automatics are just a manual transmission that has automated shifts anyways. BTW that "low" selection doesnt just keep the transmission in low gear - it provides downshifts only, even from high gear, downshifting at the earliest possible moment for maximum engine braking.
Nice thing about owning and running a Fleet of Pre 1990 T600's and Peterbilt 359's with 3406B Cats. All in Restored Pristine Condition. No ELD, No DEF to deal with.
El argosy es semi automático trae pedal de clutch para la marcha de inicio, es curioso ver estos camiones con caja g60,g85,eaton siendo cajas standar y con el modulo simulando que es automático.
When I was young my cars all had sticks in them. I really enjoyed the connection to the vehicle and the feel of going through the gears. Once I had kids and got older and had spent more time in traffic jams and heavy traffic, shifting got old and I switched to automatics. I can still shift any time I want but honestly, yea, I just don't feel like it any more. I just want to get from A to B. To me that's all this is about. Shifting doesn't make you a man. It's just one method to change gears in a vehicle. If shifting a truck is what makes you feel like you're a man then I really feel sorry for you.
Sam Kornelis OR, someone (like me) has a right rotator cuff that's been torn FOUR times and repaired TWICE, so it has been medically recommended that I drive an automatic. This, and a REAL MAN is secure enough in his Manhood to let his gears change themselves
Automatic tranny Right??? Why does it have a clutch pedal ? Do you use it to get Rolling ? I used to drive truck yeas ago ,but after two back surgeries i am not able to push clutch in. Heard about these new auto shift trucks Interested in getting back behind the wheel . Can you explain why the clutch pedal Do i have to use it . Thanks
It's probably one of those half-breeds. Like the first gen ultrashift. It's an automatic, but you have to push in the clutch to come to a stop. Kinda defeats the purpose of having an automatic.🤦🤷
I've been in one of these for three weeks now, a 2015 Cascadia with this trans and a DD13 rated at 500 hp. Truck will not pull an empty trailer up the slightest grade without slowing with foot on floor. Weak! Cruise is useless - it slows even more on grades. Does NOT get better mileage - averaging around 6.5 - than my old Prostar with 450 cummins and 10-speed. Much more difficult to drive, horribly uncomfortable seat, not nearly as stable road feel - scary in crosswinds compared to rock solid Prostar. I've told my employer to get me another Prostar, I will not continue driving this Cascadia. If this is the future truck I'm glad I'm nearing retirement. Would never drive this is icy conditions, it breaks traction in rain! Dangerous! It does ride better and quieter than a Prostar but the Prostar is a much better and safer truck. AT is good in construction backups, the only advantage. Not worth it just for that. Sorry, Freightliner, not good enough.
I hope whoever I work for has autoshift technology in their trucks. I find it to be a distraction to have to shift gears when driving. I currently go through school now and all of our road trucks have manual transmissions and I at times have difficulty downshifting and sometimes let off the clutch too fast causing a stall when the light turns green.
@@acedriverboi2429 NOBODY has a right to be on the road. It is a PRIVILEGE that CAN, and SHOULD be taken away from people who have no idea how to drive correctly. When happens when your truck truck won't start for any starter issue? If you got one of these your SOL If you had a manual n some chains and a buddy to give you a pull start youd be set
I like the International dash best. Just has a classy old school look to me, but I agree, Freightliner dashes look cheap and do not have as much information/guages as others do. Does Volvo use Allison? I'm new to trucking after being out of it since the early eighties,,,,times have changed!
if you drive in mountains i think you would still prefer a manual ive driven these automatics and these come down the hills really fast because theirs just not enough gears for this to be in to slow the truck down and god forbid your jake brake doesn't work your screwed your brakes do all the stopping . i can go down a hill alot better and still be able to downshift if i need to but in an automatic i always came down the hills way too fast pretty scary at times not being able to slow your truck down without totally smoking the brakes. If i did however have a city driving position like someone said before like la i think this would be the way to go because the traffic is horrible and i gotta hold my knee down sometimes to give me a lil break but for mountainous runs like around 300 to 400 miles a day with very little traffic this was a miserable setup..
Here Here Automatics Suck for mountain range climbing I had one drag me all the way down from 7th pulling an empty to granddaddy low gear you would think with the technology today they can build a better mountain climber
+Ryan Derek the automatic cant out preform manual in any situation...drove both in all situations across the states ..manual is the only way to go ...anyone that likes the automatic will not have a problem getting one ..most drivers want touch them and for a good reason
If you look at the video where they are showing the auto shift controller and the later portion where you see the clutch pedal, look at the gauges. They are obviously two different trucks as the auto truck has individual gauges and the manual has a cluster behind a common lens. I have no Idea why the changed trucks to make this video.
Dave Vorhies Manual operation of the automatic system requires a clutch? You are so wrong. I know because I've driven Columbias and Cascadias with them.
These automatic truck transmissions can be quirky. I drove them for years and had problems including clutch failure, not shifting, shifting too early. They get real quirky in local driving. All the stop and go takes its toll on the electronics. I had one that would hang up when you came to a stop and "2F" would be flashing on the shift indicator. I would have to shut the truck off and restart-very annoying. Sometimes they don't know which gear they want to be in and will hunt until they find the right one. They are tied in with the throttle and when they act up, they disable the throttle for several seconds at a time when you need to accelerate. They are horrible with off road use. These transmissions are for lazy drivers and drivers who never really learned how to shift a manual.
I am a British trucker and I lost most of the use of my left leg, so I have to use automatic transmission, but I can assure you that I am not lazy!!!!! Some of us don't have a choice of what we can drive.
I have amended my previous comment, But to be honest the auto trans in the DAF CF85 with the nice 12.5 straight 6 Paccar MX-13 Euro 6 engine is really rather good, nice and smooth with a good pick up, and seems to always find the right gear for the hills and corners of England, with a pretty speedy change as well. It's quite disappointing to see how much today's younger people like me don't want anything to do with the old school ways and that schools won't even make them learn. If you don't understand how to work the manual, you probably shouldn't be driving a semi.

All you guy doggin something new it always happens til you use it yourself and like everything in this world when it first comes out it takes some time to get the bugs worked out and old school way is getting pushed out just saying love old school myself put it's a dieing breed
I've drove a little bit of everything over the years. mostly 13s and 18s. I was impressed with the Volvo I-shift. But the "Smart" shift? Garbage. I bought one that I got a good deal on. A 2015 Cascadia with a Cummins and this piece of Shit Shift. It's actually missed gears. And mostly on a down grade, taking off. And it wants to slowwwwly walk up every gear from 2. "Smart" Shift is the wrong damn name for this garbage. I have nothing against automatics if they are setup right. Especially if your like me with fkd up knees. But damit. It does piss a driver off.
I didn't mean to send that dang it I wasn't done yet anyway that's a dumb place on the automatic to put what gear you're in it needs to be right in front of the driver not looking over to the left side who Engineers this stuff anyway Mickey Mouse
My company uses these trucks. Never have I seen such a shitty transmission. Ive blown 3 power dividers by not being in the right gear on take off. It decided 6th was a good gear to take off in, when I was loaded (53,000 lbs of fuel). PD failed and there I sat
I can't understand for the life of me why the switchgear seems so cheap in these. Matter of fact, EVERY interior component in this rig seems cheap... If I were driving this for a living, I would want something with a quality feel and not just be utilitarian.
The new drive these days suck let them drive a truck with no power steering and no ac in the truck now that was the days of trucking the good old days not like today's trucking these green horn got it to easy
That's the way I started out when I was young on those old Macks. No creature-comforts whatsoever. Now that I'm older, have health issues but still hell-bent on actually EARNING a living.... all that technology is looking pretty damn good!!!
they may be crude But American trucks get the jobs done I don't understand why you would go over all this Interior crap every freightliner is set up the same from 2006 onward
Companies are turning to autoshifters because of driver abuse on manuals. About 1% of clutchless shifters are truly any good at it, most do it out of laziness. Don't buy into B.S comments about transmissions lasting forever after being powershifted forever. Seldom do any of these bullshit artists stay with a carrier longer than two years, and witness a transmission last forever. I won't deny some drivers are very good at it, but they are extremely rare.

Also trying to get through traffic in Brooklyn, Bronx in one of these. Forgetaboutit!
The one I drove was air shifted, I troubled with icing up, which made shifting a problem.
what does the truck look like?

Did anyone else see it "Drip" something at about the 0:18 mark?
4:10 here we have fog lights when u pull it out....I bet u have those on when it's a beautiful night clear as a bell blinding other drivers...fog lights see alot of idiots with them on like they are friggin chicken lights smh
bred white I see more deer in the dark with them on here in PA. Saved my butt a couple times.
All you guy doggin something new it always happens til you use it yourself and like everything in this world when it first comes out it takes some time to get the bugs worked out and old school way is getting pushed out just saying love old school myself put it's a dieing breed
These trucks were made for wheel holders not truckers.
ahhhh the lost video on how to teach a hindu to drive a semi in 8 easy minutes!!! sweet!! budddddyyyy i buy a freighliner!!! i trucker now!
I would take a long hood 379 pete over any European cabover peace of shit any day!
The transmission can be programmed any way you want it
I guess u will never need a clutch lol
Good way to fuck with truckers freight liner .. Lol swift drivers are going to have harder times now with that's shifter ..
HaHa ..drove 1 and ill never be guilty of it again...
Well I guess.. the second half looks very... ehh...cheap
This is definitely no merc or scania
Throttle response on this thing sucks
How bout a 18 speed road ranger. No problems there. Oh wait, steering wheel holders of today could not handle that.
I didn't mean to send that dang it I wasn't done yet anyway that's a dumb place on the automatic to put what gear you're in it needs to be right in front of the driver not looking over to the left side who Engineers this stuff anyway Mickey Mouse
no thank you ill take my manual gear box any day of the week !!! fu@k that
Volvo makes best auto trans thus far.. Freightliner needs to let merxeses redo their dashboards they are very dated
It's a sissy shifter! If you can't shift'em....you don't need to be driving...
I just feel like autos are dangerous as a newbie driver wouldn't have to think ahead with the shifts and speed. Just drive it like a car.
@Mr Sunshines automated manual just means you have the option of driving it manually, it is still an auto.
not dangerous, not a big deal= highly hazardous to your health
.
Step1 learn to drive a manual. Step 2 do not by an automatic.
Step 3 do not listen to this tool
Step 4 do not by a Freightliner.
More like dumb shift . I absolutely hate this damn thing. Drove a Volvo ishift for a bit, not a fan of the auto but the ishift is better
