I understand what spinal surgery is all about since my wife fell off a horse and ended up with compression of two vertebrae. It plagued her all her life. So, be careful and follow all the advice the doctors are offering. Raymond is an integral part of your team and I'm sure is part of all you do. Glad to see you back!

Having watched my son recover from a major spinal trauma. About 2 1/2 years ago, I can totally relate he is now fully recovered and it does take time. Just take your time. Listen to the medical experts is what I say. But in that time he developed a love for Photography as he couldn't do much anything physical, but we got him a small mirrorless camera and you should see his photos now he's got his own Instagram. If we take our time in recovery we get there it's when you rush the recovery that's when problems start to occur. I'm glad you're back on deck and I enjoy your videos as they are generally balanced, and you guys don't shout. To ever RUclipsr out there who shouts when they do their videos, please stop it. We are sitting 3 inches from a screen we do not need to be shouted at thank you. And I enjoy this video. In terms of the new Lumix camera, I'm not a fan of Panasonic and while it's a great great camera I'm not gonna swap systems because of one camera. I think this is probably a great camera for people who are new to the camera space and are looking for a really fantastic camera or looking to upgrade their Panasonic but these days once you're invested in a system it is really hard to swap and I don't encourage people to swap systems as you then have to learn a whole new system to get the same quality of photos. Yes instantaneously there is a platter of features that that will benefit you when shooting video and Photography with a new camera, but the systems thing is interesting because we work by systems in our brain. Brain is wide after a while to work with certain systems and when you change camera systems it is really difficult to produce the same quality of work. I often see people leaving a certain system and then six months later, they saying I'm coming back. My honest advice is once you've invested in a system and your entrenched in that stay in it, and learn to use the gear that you have not keep upgrading to different manufacturers because they come out with a new camera. Yes, I teach photography, I don't have a fancy RUclips channel yet, but I do teach photography in my community.

I could care less about the content of this video. I'm So GLAD Leigh is back!!!!!! Quick recovery and take it easy. Let your body guide the rhythm of the recovery, not your will. Raymond, thank you for changing your look and approach when Leigh was away. You two are great. Keep up the great work. Much love from Tucson, AZ.

Superb video and so good to see Leigh back!
I'm only an amateur but here's what I now do after a terrible experience with *Carbonite :
    1) Download files from memory card to Windows PC. Set aside the memory card until the next steps are complete
    2) The PC will automatically sync to Dropbox. So almost instantly I now have 3 copies of the original camera files.
    3) All photos that get edited are saved as Hi-Res JPEG on Windows PC and Dropbox and also to an external My Book HDD. So now that's 5 RAW or Hi-Res edits in three locations!
    4) Periodically, I mirror copy my local HDD to another My Book HDD which I bring in from an outside site just to do the copying. (I have to hope my house does not burn down or that I get burgled during these days!)
    5) Periodically also, I delete all originals that neither got edited nor marked as 1 star ( a keeper but not edited for current use).
    6) Periodically also, I copy the retained originals of edits to the local HDD and the offsite HDD and when my PC hard drive is getting full, I finally delete the originals and oldest Hi-Res JPEGs of the edited images.
I appreciate that this wouldn't work for a busy professional. But it does mean that I have plenty of redundancy in my system. I still worry that my oldest photos are only backed up to two physical HDDs. Maybe I should pay to keep more of my best older photos on Dropbox?
I structure my archives by year then by folder for each day's photos with a naming convention of for example '20230211 London Street Portraits' so they will list in date order but with some indication of their content should I wish to search in future. Posting my best pictures regularly to 500px also acts as a visual chronological index.
*For years I relied on Carbonite to back up photos and documents until one day I accidently deleted some documents on my PC but then I noticed the Carbonite sync had stopped a week previously!! I contacted Carbonite who told me "Yea. Sorry about that. We had a service problem. We emailed you." I checked and they didn't email me so I lost a week''s work!! So after that I adopted my complex, very cautious process described above.

Stay strong! Have two blown discs L4-L5 and L5-S1. They have been screwed up for about 15 years now. For me, the pain was horrible for several years, mostly nerve pain in my legs… sciatica is the worst thing ever. Couldn’t afford surgery, so I never got it done. Luckily, the pain eventually passed without surgery and I’m mostly back to normal. I know how bad it can be, but take it from me, you can recover and this will pass. Have a quick and successful recovery, don’t push too hard. Slow and steady.

So happy to see you back, Leigh, and I concur with so many other comments that you both make a great team. I've just started using my new Sonly Alpha 7 IV and I have to remind myself that the images are quite larger than my old Alpha 57's. For a long time, I've use my iCloud Drive with additional purchased storage. I'm also getting rather ruthless is what I consider worth saving. But I am taking nowhere near as many photos as a full time photographer. I'm still basically a happy amateur hobbyist. My Photos library in is still measured in the low 10s of thousands (I want to say about 33,000). A lot of that, now that I'm retired and have time to go back through them, will be deleted. Raymond, you mentioned AI that Amazon is using to help categorize photos. This is something I may need, because I can't see anyone curating my photos but me. Can't think of how many of my Mom's and Dad's photos my brother and I ditched simply because we knew so little about the context or subject. So, being able to cull my collection down to something that contains history and context that will be meaningful to my adult children needs to be a priority.

@@LeighAndRaymond Leigh, sounds like a plan. Having been through PT a couple times (torn rotator cuff, carpal tunnel) I can say doing what your therapist says, especially on the at home / between visits exercises, stretches and doing them as they suggest not more or less is the key. My best friend's daughter is a therapist and personal coach and that is what she told me. I did it and not once did my therapist have to go "Drill Sargent" on me. If anything hurts more than it should or you're having trouble with something please do tell your PT person. Again, I wish you all the best. Not being able to get out and do stuff you want to do just wears on a person.

As far as I know, Time Machine is not a cold storage since it uses a database scheme to maintain the chronology. If the database is corrupted, the whole history of the backup is corrupted too. Best would have been a Synology for hot storage + a Synology for cold storage (via HyperBackup) and a Synology C2 external account for an off site cold storage. Since Synology share points can be secured by a certificate, the data is cryped. So there is very unlikely that an attack can access the second synology. Like C2, the backup sessions are fully isolated one from another and certificate crypted. The problem with an alignement of WD disks is the reliability (and availability) of the power supply and the drives themselves.

  • @LaszloBagi

I also use chronosync and Backblaze for cloud backup. note Backblaze will only keep 30 days of backups unless you want to pay more. I have a Synology DS1522+ 32TB NAS and and a g-tech 12TB single direct connect drive. I use a daily/weekly/monthly strategy. time machine goes to its own volume on the NAS daily. Chronosync does weekly backups to its own NAS volume and monthly backups to the g-tech.

Second, it looks like we use very similar storage methods. All my raws are backed up on WD external drives, organized by year, camera, month. Great to see you up and around and yes Raymond should get more on-air time. I am one of the many ,as an enthusiast, never worried about backups. I wouldn’t miss most of my photos, if I lost them. I usually print the ones I like and the rest just sit on my hard drive. However, now that I am trying to record all the old family pixs, i have to consider backing up my work. Thank you for sharing your pricedures.

Excellent Video!! I really like that both Raymond & Leigh made the video collaboratively, they obviously make a great team. Leigh, very happy to see you standing upright!! ( I suffer from Sciatica so I know the pain, can you please mention the brand of the belt you are wearing, I think it might help!) and Raymond, great presentation!! I enjoy how you speak and how you explain things in a way that is easy to understand. Now on to my storage process, I keep my original photos & videos on fast SSD drives by year, by month, by camera, and by topic. I have created an LR catalogue with the same design, but I only include files I want to work with (I exclude out of focus and other files). MY LR files are stored on a local NAS (QNAP) with the same structure as the original files. What I need now is a Cloud Backup Solution, BackBlaze is mentioned in the comments - I need to research that.
