I was nine years old when I first watched this, and since then I've been looking for this video. I quickly bursted into tears when I saw the little girl again, she was so very innocent...
This is based on a Hans Christian Andersen's short story of the same name. I'm a teacher and sometimes my students need to read the story and I usually illustrate the lessons with this video. Thanks for posting it and for the editing work!
You posted this film on my 72nd birthday. I remember seeing this film as a child in the Franklin Theater in Allentown, PA, sometime during the forties. (My grandfather was the theater manager at the time.) I still remember how sad I felt sitting alone and watching it. Thanks for the birthday present.
I saw this many years go as a child and it touched me utterly. I remembered it out of the blue and searched for it and found it here. It is still just as touching. Thanks for taking the trouble to upload this and to add the two minutes.
Well I didn't think I could be more depressed than I already was, but then I watched this cartoon depicting a orphaned toddler freezing to death. Awesome.
My God, that touched my heart, the ending was sad but happy for the little girl, now she's in a better place... Beautiful animation,I love these older animations as much... ❤
I've been looking for this version for ages. I was a little puzzled at first when they changed the ending, but thanks for restoring the rest of the footage. I actually saw the original cut when I was 4 years old or so in black and white on a projector with no sound. I was brought to tears and shocked to see the poor girl die, it left a deep scar to this day, I never forgot it. I guess they decided to re cut it because the original was too brutal for little kids. But I don't regret the experience, it made me grow as a person and gain an appreciation for sad stories.
Thank you for gracing us with this gem of a cartoon! The last time I saw it in its original format was back in 1987 up in Flagstaff Arizona at the old Orpheum Theater. It has always touched my heart and soul! This metal head has a big soft spot for this classic! :)
I've never seen this before. I'm just so moved by this I can't put it into words... it's such a sad, yet powerful story. Too bad kids today don't get to see cartoons like this (even years ago when I was growing up, for that matter). Thanks so much for sharing!
When digging threw some 35mm films I just got in- I found a nice 35mm film print of this cartoon. I came here to watch it before I ran it in my 35mm theater- and now I might not watch it in my theater for awhile. It is so sad. Very well done cartoon.
This was shown at the Detroit Institute of Arts during a lecture entitled "Out of the Inkwell, Out of the Vaults" by Detroit animation historian Steve Stanchfield. It was the last cartoon shown....afterwards Steve felt bad that the lecture ended on a sad note. Lots of people around me got misty-eyed during this. Great cartoon, but probably the saddest cartoon ever produced too.
Yes, a very sad story indeed. I can understand why the ending was edited out, but I wish it would have stayed intact. The whole message is in the ending.
Wow, this actually more depressing than the 2006 version. At least in that version, the girl has memories with grandmother to give her some comfort while this girl is taken away by an angel because, sadly, she didn't seem to have anyone else.
Sounds about right there. I find just about any versions of this story to be quite depressing. As it was her father the one who forced her out into the cold to sell matches, somehow illustrates parental cruelty. Therefore, her father should then be a person of interest and then to be taken into custody by law enforcement when found.
Andrew Wang Unfortunately back then (even now), people and the law didn't distinguish old from young, legal guardian from child, etc. It's just poor=scum. Outwithem! :(
kuroniro1 I once had this dream where I was actually an investigative field reporter of the story. At the time when she was found in the snow, motionless with bare feet, eyes closed, not only that people stopped by to watch, what happened was that there were a bunch of press, the news media, and a lot of authorities are on scene. During that time, there were a lot of firefighters, paramedics, and sheriffs. The rich merchant heard all the indistinct talking and all those radio voices, they came out to see what was happening and the mother of the rich merchant decided to have me bring her inside the house and place her on the couch and then turn the couch to the direction where it faces the Christmas Tree and the Fireplace. At the time when she was spotted in the snow, it was just in time for the morning news. Then after a few hours later, her eyes opened and she looked around to see what is happening, not sure where she ended up, then she realized that she was actually in the rich merchant's house and that she is truly in front of a fireplace and a Christmas Tree as the mother of the rich merchant told her that a reporter found her laying in the snow, then he brought her in. Later on, the story became viral as she breaks the silence and shares the story of what happened, speaking to the media. Then what happened was that the sheriff deputies then headed to the house where her father is, knocked on the door and her father then was yelling to tell her not to come back until she finished selling the matches, then the deputies said loudly to open the door and then as soon as her father opened the door, the deputies immediately told him to stop where he is and what happened was that he tried to run away from them and then the deputies had to tackle him to the ground and handcuff him as they had gotten upon where he may try to pick up something to throw at the deputies. After her father was taken into custody, the girl was given a settlement where a portion of it was used to pay for major renovations of the house. A part of it were given to her for her to spend on her necessary itineraries such as food, clothing, and such. After she headed home, the furniture has been provided, but her closets and her kitchen cabinets are still empty and then she decides to go shopping at the mall. As the two of us were at the mall doing some shopping, she later on had wanted to eat and I had wanted to eat too. We both had a burrito and I was surprised that she decided to pay for my burrito.
I was five when I first saw this cartoon with my mother. I'll always remember Mom's initial reaction;"Oh, look at the poor little waif." Perhaps Mom knew the original Hans Christian Andersen story, which I read years later.
My dad had our family watched this cartoon every Christmas in Norway from 1961 through 1968 and probably afterwards when we moved to the USA. We have it on a reel of some sort, but it is much grainier. We always loved this one because she went to heaven after she had a sad life. I always thought it was a Norwegian cartoon when I was a kid.
What a particularly wrenching interpretation of this story! The little girl was portrayed as so sweet and innocent, struggling against her surroundings for survival and a bit of happiness. If only...............
Like some others I haven't seen this memorable film since I was a kid. I've read that many theater goers were in tears when this was first shown. Its one of only three cartoons that was nominated for an Academy Award in 1937. The other two were "Educated Fish" and Disney's "The Old Mill"...with the latter being the winner. All three can be seen on RUclips.
Okay... Someone needs to restore this cartoon in its FULL original form. This one true standout from the Charles Mintz era of Columbia cartoons is a masterpiece unto itself, and that heartbreaking ending needs to be left intact.
I hope so that there would be a version of this where it comes to a happy ending. Apparently she dies at the end. I once had done this where the girl who played the role of the little girl selling matches was my personal real life all time favorite and I was part of the story as well, but as an uncredited eyewitness news reporter, this one was done when I was actually dreaming. I was out and about doing live broadcasting on a snowy Christmas Eve and as a field reporter, I had interviewed several of the out and about of the crowd while my personal all time favorite, as the main character, was the girl selling the matches. What happened was then as the morning news of the Christmas Day comes, as I was just getting ready to go live again to do my field broadcasting, as soon as I stepped out of the media vehicle, I saw a crowd gathering towards a corner where the girl was laying in the snow, with eyes closed, and then I got myself with a definite live report to make and that was actually the top story of Christmas Day. I then had to go back to the media vehicle and grab the blanket to wrap around the girl and the family who lives nearby, which she looked into the home of, was taunted by what they saw and immediately ran out of the house to assist to get her into the house as I carried her inside, then I laid her on a couch that is facing their fireplace where the Christmas Tree was nearby. At that moment, she was pronounced dead, but after being placed in front of their fireplace as the warmth wrapped around her, I begin to feel heat generating from her and then I placed my hand in front of her near where her nose is and I was able to then feel that she is breathing, then she tried to open her eyes and she was completely blacked out at that time as she was not viewing any definite objects until after when her visual became stabilized and that everything she's seeing are all definite objects by then. She appeared seemingly confused as to whether if she is really in front of those objects or if they would disappear again, as she then asked "Where am I now?" and then the housewife told her that a reporter found her laying in the snow with burnt out matches and brought her into the house, then they showed her who the reporter was which was me, as for the fact that the housewife was one of those who the day before, refused to buy the matches, she gave her a big hug, embracing her and crying with her remorseful thoughts. As I was still in the house, I went on live broadcasting again, as I gave her the interview, she mentioned that she was forced to be out there by her father to sell matches and that he told her that he would not open the door, so then what happened was then on the news, her father became a person of interested for being abusive on his daughter in the manner of forcing her to sell matches out in the cold. Her father was then taken into custody as the house gets rearranged and refurbished when she was given a settlement to pay for the construction services and for her to be back into the home where her father lived, so far no charges were filed against her father, but he will continue to remain in custody as the superior court judge determines the charges to be pressed against her father for what he did. This would very well another version of this story that would come across a happy ending.
I can see how this was nominated for an Oscar. While it seemed rather jolly, the short stayed true to the story and had it's bitter-sweet ending. So tragic how they depicted the girl as no older than 3. Still beautiful. I hate how they changed the ending later on (see up to 6:34) to be a more implied death than more direct, made it seem like a pointless cartoon.
They cut sadnesses part , to have the little match girl a happy ending, yet her ending is sad , how they give her a really cute design and seeing kids dies is really sad 😢, they should put this on category of try not to not to cry challenge on RUclips every time I see a big tear jerker .
And for those of you have not seen, Steve Stanchfield has posted this cartoon in its entirety, and it was completely restored. It's posted on his channel. We should give kudos to Steve for this one including an article that it was posted Cartoon Research's website in the "Thunderbean Thursday" section about this cartoon. Here it is for your viewing enjoyment. ruclips.net/video/sydsReNXV9s/видео.html BTW, I got this cartoon on 8mm which is the complete version, not the edited one like the one you see on the "Totally Tooned In" episode. It was silent, and it was in black & white.
Essa é a história mais triste que conheço. 😢 Hoje existem várias versões e novos títulos, mas não se perdeu a essência e nem a linda e triste mensagem.
I know WHY the last two minutes were omitted from the "TOTALLY TOONED IN" version. The powers that be didn't want kids to cry their eyes out - and be traumatized- seeing the "Little Match Girl" die and have an angel fly her to Heaven.
***** So this isn't Universal? Someone said that this was in the bonus features of the Little Mermaid Plantain Edition which could be reasonable since that was who Disney (the guy not the company) used to work for but it could be the Disney version of the Match Girl short that was going to part of the third Fantasia since 2006 with Minnie, Goofy and Pluto as new appearances but that never happened which I was disappointed so instead they just leave the short separate (and same with Lorenzo) which I thought Disney was going to turn it into a happy ending unlike in the other Andersen based Disney, they let Ariel live in Little Mermaid and same with the tin soldier and the ballerina doll from Fantasia 2000.
Probably for the same reason that most animation today doesn't like to touch on depressing themes--animation is wrongly considered "for kids" and they don't want to frighten children by putting in sad scenes like this. But by doing that, you take much of the heart and soul out of these cartoons. Real life isn't always happy, which is why films like Dumbo, Bambi, and Land Before Time have stood the test of time. The mindset of animation as being only for kids is destroying it as an art form.
There is a newer version made by Disney animators recently (obviously it's not just these two versions) that I had seen in a collection of shorts on Netflix that explained the earlier versions of the animated tellings (like this one). Its such a sad story as well as innocent and pure. It always breaks my heart no matter which version or how many times I watch it
@@lerouquinne yes but it's part of a full size feature where they show several Disney short films. Some were seen in theaters before a Disney or Pixar movie and others, like the Little Match Girl remake, are ones that were created for the collection
Very beautiful and sad. I feel sad too. Its like my story together with "Cinderella" and "Ugly duckling". She looks like me when i was little. And make it how it was, in which moment she actually was taken to heaven?
Unnecesary cruelty for common sympathy trigger, check; depiction of consumism as heaven (even for little children), check; scary features as a result of cuteness overload, check! 1937 is all over the place in this short.
mmmm debo admitir que cuando leí que le habias agregado los últimos minutos, no me esperaba semjante desenlace. No veo la necesidad de quitarle ese final, en mi opinion, sin él no tiene nada de significativo. Gracias por subirlo.
I have a Deep Dark theory the way how this short goes that is most likely a child that is orphaned in a society were the adults can't adopted her and there is nothing for here to make shelters or food for her so she dreams that she is in a beautiful world were there are angles that would make her happy and an older on as her mother. I think this is where she dies from cold winter because she is too weak and fragile to survive and so she is in heaven now and her soul is now self. I am probably so right about this.
***** Interesting. You seem to blame me as short minded based on my opinion of her age, yet you claim to know my culture and refer to it as Wheat and tractors. Indeed wheat and tractors could appear in my countrys culture as did the Original Little Matchgirl. What it's all about is opinions and different takes of the original story, which is hopefully what you try to defend, though unfortunately not in a convincing manor, given your alienating choice of lines. You seem offended by my critisim, which seem to be what drive your replies, which is unfortuante.
I'm sorry but who decided to make this a children's bedtime story "HMMMMM WHAT DO CHILDREN ENJOY LISTENING TO BEFORE DRIFTING OFF TO SLEEP OOOOO I KNOW, HOW ABOUT A STORY ABOUT A CHILD WHO SUCCUMBS TO POVERTY AND HYPOTHERMIA AND DIES THEY'LL GET A KICK OUT OF THAT"
In the original story she also stays out in the street rather than return to her dad, because he always beats her if she comes home without making any money. 😢
This is one of the most relatable stories to someone who's never fit in. The girl is rejected and mocked by society and just wants to be somewhere where she can be happy, but she can only find that peace in death. You could see it as a metaphor for suicide.
To this day, people are still heartless and cruel, especially toward the homeless and/or the less fortunate. Yes, scams, robbers and thieves run amok during the autumn and winter holiday season. I suggest that if you find yourself in a position to help someone, do so. $1, a burger, a bottle of water, a cup of coffee, or even a kind word; whatever God you can do, goes a long way to someone who is in real need. Pray for them. Pray for yourself and pray for the world. No one is perfect, but it is perfectly alright to help, to be kind to one another regardless of social standing. This animation is bittersweet because it shows how fast a life can change or even change if we continue to ignore those in obvious need.
Several Christmases ago I saw this on RUclips and at the end l was misty eyed. Thinking to myself "l can give one more gift". l called 1-800-GIVE-LIFE and made an appointment to donate blood to The American Red Cross. I've been a regular donor ever since. The American Red Cross is always happy to have donors like me donate blood and blood platelets.
Hmm you know looking back this did remind me of judgment day as seen on flying house or superbook sorry was one of those Christian cartoon all biblical any who judgement day it to dealt with a homeless person but it was a boy he too been through all this 0:53 n denied all this 2:142:302:41 though it being in Israel and not new York this close too January 1:58 it wasn't cold but yeah this did happened 7:48 (bell tolls) yeah got hit over the head by a tossed object sheesh seem as lil Sally here he too was pure of heart n gone too heaven kinda nice gesture hats off good Friday which is tomorrow 8:00 n the king I mean government no no uh rich guy wasting food the beggar mooched off of he too had died I guess choked it heart attack but he went too hell do difference 😇👿 🌥️🔥 yeah fine cool the female version of judgment day I like it 😯😁👋
Except that the whole premise of communism is the idea that it can end poverty. The sad reality is that it creates more poverty, not less. Capitalism may not be perfect, but it's the best system we've got for now.
That is I think the saddest cartoon I've ever seen. At the same time it was visually stunning. Thank you for posting.
I long not understood, why, when human cries, angels gather around him and sing him.
Yeah we all know the "sad endings is'nts'' MGM but golly colored rapshody ? ah g rated anything can happen

Well I didn't think I could be more depressed than I already was, but then I watched this cartoon depicting a orphaned toddler freezing to death. Awesome.
The movie M with Peter Lorrie represent an alternative ending to this subject

***** And now Oswald the Lucky Rabbit belongs to the Disney company.
+superc2777777 damn you know alot about disney
+Valerie Vargas now she is ghost
Valerie Vargas Yep
I find all versions of this to be depressing.
Can anybody tell me what the lyrics of the song are? I know the music is Waltz in A Flat, Op.39 No.15 by Brahms, but I really need to know the lyrics.
another candy coated cartoon, cleaned up and sterilized for your viewing protection. thanks for restoring the lost minutes.
By the way, why was it edited in this way? As a result, it loses much of its message. Thank you, Domenic1st, for finding and sharing this with us.
So do I. Thanks for sharing this, Rasmus.
There is a newer version made by Disney animators recently (obviously it's not just these two versions) that I had seen in a collection of shorts on Netflix that explained the earlier versions of the animated tellings (like this one). Its such a sad story as well as innocent and pure. It always breaks my heart no matter which version or how many times I watch it
Sunset Shimmer Gaming is this newer short film currently available on Netflix?
@@lerouquinne yes but it's part of a full size feature where they show several Disney short films. Some were seen in theaters before a Disney or Pixar movie and others, like the Little Match Girl remake, are ones that were created for the collection
Lindo e triste ❤✨💖
yo cuando era niño vi este dibujo animado en cartoon network y llore este cuento es tan hermoso y tan triste a la vez
Thank you for your comment--- it is sad and beautiful, and it does touch your emotions.
Es un cuento de Hans Christian Andersen
vintage cartoons r still awesome
Very beautiful and sad. I feel sad too. Its like my story together with "Cinderella" and "Ugly duckling". She looks like me when i was little. And make it how it was, in which moment she actually was taken to heaven?
I think i'm crying right now
Comovente delicado, nos leva à pensar como esse mundo é injusto.
Unnecesary cruelty for common sympathy trigger, check; depiction of consumism as heaven (even for little children), check; scary features as a result of cuteness overload, check! 1937 is all over the place in this short.
What are the lyrics to the song that's played at the end, and the middle?
InvaderPet good question
mmmm debo admitir que cuando leí que le habias agregado los últimos minutos, no me esperaba semjante desenlace. No veo la necesidad de quitarle ese final, en mi opinion, sin él no tiene nada de significativo. Gracias por subirlo.
Merry effin' Christmas
Christian take away message: The only hope for the poor is death.
Happy effin' New Years
Never saw this, but it is beautiful animation.
Thanks!
this is still kinda sad 😐😑😢😭 ! ! ! ! !
Even sadder than that time Frosty melted......... (LOL)
Song (classical Arabic) The Little Match girl
A bit extreme how tiny she was here.
She looks like a todler still in the dipers.(should be rather limited what she'd be able to speak and do)
Your English clearly doesn't extend to the concept of "poetic license."
*****
Still doesn't change the fact it's an extreme choice for her age.
StoneTitan You're proving my point but this is to be expected when in one's culture, poetry = wheat and tractors.
*****
Interesting.
I see this is one classic wied and funny cartoon, but still sad
Omg this is so sad.
❤🌹😢
muchos cuentos se han editado para hacerlos menos trágicos pero con este sería imposible hacerlo
Brutaler Film. :'(
she is a ghost the angel is a ghost and the girl is a ghost... wooooooow!!
As Seen on Totally Tooned In
I'm sorry but who decided to make this a children's bedtime story
"HMMMMM WHAT DO CHILDREN ENJOY LISTENING TO BEFORE DRIFTING OFF TO SLEEP
OOOOO I KNOW, HOW ABOUT A STORY ABOUT A CHILD WHO SUCCUMBS TO POVERTY AND HYPOTHERMIA AND DIES THEY'LL GET A KICK OUT OF THAT"
In the original story she also stays out in the street rather than return to her dad, because he always beats her if she comes home without making any money. 😢
This is one of the most relatable stories to someone who's never fit in. The girl is rejected and mocked by society and just wants to be somewhere where she can be happy, but she can only find that peace in death. You could see it as a metaphor for suicide.
😍
omg she die ! i do not expect this on an american cartoon. only Chinese.
She's freaky
Help 🕯️
The American Red Cross is always happy to have donors like me donate blood and blood platelets.

bizarre
Communism? I see plenty of poor kids living in crapitalism, probably more.
Except that the whole premise of communism is the idea that it can end poverty. The sad reality is that it creates more poverty, not less. Capitalism may not be perfect, but it's the best system we've got for now.
