I recorded my first album in Cakewalk. Now I recording second and I still using Cakewalk. Great piece of software. Every effects like delay, reverb, EQ and others are in really professional quality. I think that if you just want to add reverb or delay, or some modulation effects there is no need to looking for another plugins. It's crazy that is free.

I haven't used Cakewalk in 10 years, how does this new version stack up against Studio One Pro 4? I have used Studio One off and on since 2013 but haven't recorded anything for 3 years and I am wanting to get back into recording. I just bought a powerful computer which I for a price so low that you wouldnt it. Money is tight and Studio One Pro is $300. So Cakewalk, Reaper or something else cheap is what I am going for

I started using Cakewalk products since 1999, when it was MIDI only. As they added digital audio capabilities, so did I. I upgraded with every new version up to Sonar X1 Producer. I stopped with X1 Producer because it was the last version that included the Roland V-Vocal free. Along the way, I would demo various other DAWs and found them all wanting. The online forum was one of the greatest strength; a community of really helpful and knowledgeable folks. When Cakewalk went down because of Gibson over reaching, I was livid. Months later, when Bandlab acquired Cakewalk, they reached out to all registered users and extended a free membership. I have not outgrown Cakewalk. It is so fully featured that I never will. Thank you for spreading the word.

    Made it to the end.
My first DAW was actually a legit, bought copy of cakewalk 6 over 20 years ago. Since I have used Steinberg, Cubase, Muse, Kore, Krystal and for the last 9 years have been using Presonus Studio One 2 Artist and have only gone back over to Cakewalk in the last year or so due to it being free and the others not. I still have all the lovely Native Instruments VSTs that come with Studio One and Guitar Rig is my favorite.
After watching one of your videos I decided to look at some of the built in stuff in cakewalk and was blown away. Might not need the NI stuff any more.
Thanks for your content. Good stuff. Cheers.

I started using Cakewalk back with the first MS DOS version so I am kind of ahead of the curve. I would never dream of using any other DAW, I have over 200 songs made in Cakewalk. Midi editing is also another reason to use Cakewalk where midi tracks are fully integrated into the wave track view. Also Cakewalk by Bandlab is now ARA 2 and works seamlessly with Melodyne Studio. This DAW is far ahead of the competition in nearly ever respect and to me is the only true "industry standard" considering it works on Windows PCs which have around 80% of the market share of "affordable" content creation workstations. I use Cakewalk on a PC with an Intel 12 core I9 processor, it handles anything Cakewalk puts it through. :)

I made it to the end. I'm using Cakewalk and have been for the last 20 years or so. Coming from the ".mod", ".st3" and ".xm" format, I got used to a real DAW with audio and MIDI in the late '90s. I used sound fonts back then with my Sound Blaster Live card. The quality was crap, but I was recording music, which is more than any of my friends could say at the time. ;) It has now become a fully mature DAW with the years and I'm still using it today for all styles of projects, from film scoring to personal projects, and even karaoke backing tracks. ;) One thing that almost no one talks about: Cakewalk has a video view. So, when scoring to film, it is quite useful. Anyway, great job, nice videos. Keep up the good work.

I have been using cakewalk since 2000. My first DAW was homestudio 2000 from cakewalk I bought it together with the Waves musician bundle. In this time I also worked with many other Daw's like fruity loops, Protools, Cubase, Studio one Logic Pro enz. But imho there really is no better combination then Cakewalk bandlab (sonar) and Waves plugins. My workflow is very smooth I have templates for almost every situation. Made some really good fx chains presets. I do use studio one to because I own a mac book pro and a presonus studio live 32r to record on location. But then when I have to mix and master I drag everything in to bandlab. I use addictive keys and drums to creat content and it is absolutely amazing quality. I think I need to put some videos up with tips and tricks for sonar. I just need to find a plugin for OBS to capture the audio from the daw. I would recommend every one to give it a try. If it is not for you then just delete it you wont lose anything.

Worth remembering that up until quite recently, Cakewalk was one of the main competitors and on a par with Cubase in the fully-featured DAW market and was priced similarly. Remind me how much Cubase costs .... ?!
It's insane how much functionality is in there and given away for free. You'll never out-grow it. Yes you'll buy plug-ins but you'll never need another DAW. Ableton is the only other one I'd consider since it's a different and perhaps more creative approach, but it costs a lot. Respect to Reaper too, but not free unless you're willing to cheat them.

Took a little bit of playing around to get my Korg M50 vst setup done and getting my existing Melodyne into Cakewalk, but it's all good now. Pretty unbelievable that they're giving this DAW away for free. It's worth hundreds of dollars. It's nice having software that is now supported and upgraded as opposed to Sonar. I was reluctant about downloading it, but after reading so many positive experiences with it, I'm glad I went ahead and did it. Cakewalk for free is an upgrade from Sonar X3 studio which i think cost me somewhere near $200. Fantastic.

Made it to the end :) Just launching out into music production as a retirement sideline and wondering which DAW to invest my time and energy (if not money!) into. This has helped confirm Cakewalk as the one to go for. Keep up the good work.

I started with Cakewalk 3.0 around 25 yrs ago. I had a Compaq monochrome laptop and a bunch of outboard sound modules with a cheap mixer all in a keyboard flight case. I made backing tracks and played solo gigs. I upgraded every few years and stuck with it to the end. When audio came around I used MIDI for lighting control, guitar effects and vocal effects. I still use it. I paid for all the upgrades up to Sonar Platinum. Plug-ins were a god send.

I just upgraded to this version of Cakewalk from Sonar 8.5 Producer's Edition. My plugins work again!!! No drop outs!!! Plus, I can load all my old session files from 2008. Upgrading my DAW is making me a plugin addict. I can't stop buying them!!

I made it to the end. I am a complete novice that has dabbled with cakewalk since its beginning but have never achieved a finished song of my own. I`ve basically used it for recording a vocal on to a backing track, but I believe that if I follow your videos faithfully, I might just achieve something of my own. Thanks for producing these tutorials they are very concise and easy to follow, Steve H.

I have watched, I think, all of your videos, at least twice... I am in awe as to how in depth, but easily taught, you sir, manage to do all your videos... I thank you, at least twice... and, yes, I MADE IT TO THE END!!! I am an (old) newbie at this, I have always dreamed of having my own little home studio, but I kept looking at mixers and DAWs and my mind went right back to watching Thundercats, yes even at my almost 50 years on this earth... anyhow, your videos have allowed me to dream again, I have already spent countless hours watching them again and again. And I am already looking at converting my garage into my own private studio... I am also looking for soundproof ideas for the studio, etc... I am going head on, and I just wanted to say THANK YOU!!!! All the way from Tucson, Arizona and Callao, Peru!

At 52 myself, I found a way to combine all my skills into one place, and that can make a person very happy! It’s thanks to people like you, that I am enjoying my life so much. I hope you get to have your studio in your garage, you can’t measure the pleasure!

Creative Sauce Thank you, sir. Your words are very kind and your approach to what you do in front of the cameras really make a difference in us students accepting what your presenting. Your “conversational” approach as well as your attention to detail in every aspect that you talk about are certainly key in your success as, what I would consider, your celebrity status. I have seen and read other blogs etc and you are pretty much the standards in knowledge and best practices. Keep up the good work and lastly, “I hope you well!” :) :)

A couple of months ago I ditched Audacity which I had used for a couple of years. And man, am I glad I found Cakewalk! The only thing I miss from Audacity, is to be able to remove background noise easily. What we did there was to start recording but wait about 15 to 20 seconds to actually sing or play an instrument. Then select about 10 seconds of that first part, and use a noise removal tool. There isn't such a feature in Cakewalk that I have found out about yet. What was frustrating about Audacity is the difficulty in adjusting the volume of each track, which is a piece of cake in Cakewalk! 😜

Hey man, I made it to the end, lol. I’ve been using Sonar/Cakewalk for a few years now. I got a free version of Sonar with a guitar effects peddle I bought. It was a free, very limited version of Sonar called Sonar LE. This was a few years before Bandlab released the free version Cakewalk. I love using Cakewalk and have written and recorded a few songs of my own. I’m still learning a lot and since I found your RUclips channel I’ve learned a lot more. Your videos are very informative and your a very good teacher, thank you for your time and attention to detail. I subscribed to your channel and am enjoying your informative videos, I’m learning a great deal to help me use Cakewalk to its potential.
    Thanks again

Hello John Starace, I have a copy of Sonar LE on a CD, that I got with a microphone. However, the CD somehow stopped working; it no longer spins in the CD drive...so it's unusable. Now, I will try Cakewalk since it's free! Is Cakewalk like Sonar LE? Thank you!

I made it to the end.. I started out in the early 80's with a program called sequencer gold from Voyetra technologies I think it was. Had a 20 MB hard drive on a computer was like having the best thing going at that time.Had to buy and MPU401 interjace to hook it up to the computer. All you saw on the screen was green dots representing MIDI info from the keyboard or put in manually. Tried a lot of different DAW programs over the years Liked Reaper but Cakewalk has been one of the ones I always come back to because of it's simplicity. Excellent program and now its free.... My opinion is Anyone trying to learn this technology can't go wrong with this program. Best of luck to everyone.

I've been using Cakewalk/ProAudio/Sonar and back to Cakewalk for YEARS. I've produced dozens of CDs for a variety of artists on this system. Other than some persistent issues (such as the inability to "scrub" with FX enabled), and some issues with crashing when doing tempo mapping... but you learn to work around that. That it's FREE now, is incredible. I think, with initial cost and upgrades over the years, I probably sunk a couple of thousand dollars into this system. The 64bit engine is unmatched. It takes a bit of horsepower in the host system -- mine is a 12 core, water cooled beast -- but I don't really see how a person can go wrong with this! Thanks, BandLab for rescuing Sonar after the evil Henry J ditched it after nearly driving Gibson into bankruptcy. He's gone, Gibson is back, and Cakewalk by BandLab lives. And thanks, Mike, for all the great videos.

@@CreativeSauce No, thanks for all the info you provide. There's a special place in audio heaven for creative educators😉 I do have a question about the new Cakewalk/ Bandlab...in the 'old school' set up, I'm using an Alesis HD24, that I'd like to use with the computer, in other words slave Cakewalk. Does it support MMC like the older versions? The rabbit hole would be being able to mix on the analog console, slave the midi. Also, transferring said tracks into Cakewalk, so I can mix, edit inside the 'box' as it were. This will determine whether I partition the drive in my MacBook Pro for Windows/ Cakewalk. Thanks for reading, and I look forward to your response.
      Regards, Jon

lol, made it to the end too. Great review and reasons.
I was looking for something to convince a friend of mine that he has more free bang for the buck with his windows machine and cakewalk than his macbook and garageband.
I grew up with cakewalk, going back to the twelve tone days in the beginning. For midi it was everything you'd ever need. It hit some bumps in the road during the DAW revolution and much as I liked Sonar I slid towards the Cubase world where vst standards were strong. After a 10 year hiatus I came back to music and found Bandlabs incarnation of Cakewalk. The evolution of this product is truly amazing, there's nothing it can't do these days compared to it's pricey competitors. It's far more stable than Cubase ever was for me and much less demanding on resources.

I left Cakewalk after Sonar 8.5, and have been an avid Reason Suite user since v2.5 (currently on v11). I had used Cakewalk since Cakewalk for DOS. The development/marketing team just couldn't seem to figure out what they wanted their model to be. I'm trying to give the new version a chance now. I recommend it to everyone on a budget. Cakewalk is still my favorite sequencing platform. I hope BANDLAB takes Cakewalk to the place of honor it deserves.
