Just because your father couldn’t figure out how to use the shopsmith, doesn’t make it a bad machine. I’ve built furniture, cabinets for my house and shop and various other projects. The tool doesn’t make you a good wood worker, you make the tool work for you.
Your stupid comment about shopsmith not being able to do anything good and I’m sure you’ve got zero experience using one, turns me and thousands of shopsmith owners off. So I turned you off!

It’s not that he couldn’t figure out how to use the machine it’s simply because he had other tools that could do the job better. The simple fact is that while they can do many jobs and be set up in various ways, there are always better dedicated tools for the job. And I understand there are die hard fans of these things but there is a reason so many are purchased and left unused, and if they are so amazing at everything then the company would not have had to file for bankruptcy in 2009. Like many things it seems like a good idea but it’s simply not as good or convenient as tools that are dedicated to the job.
I also have a bunch of the attachments for this, however why would I set it up as a table saw, router, sander, scroll saw, when I have those tools that do a better job. The shop smiths are limited in capacity when it comes to many things and there is no denying that. You don’t have to be offended by this, all we have to do is look at the fact that these machines are generally not used in a professional environment (I’m sure someone has at some point) and are not as widely adopted as the tools it tries to replace, it’s simply a fact and you don’t need to feel attacked over it.

@@farmshopprojects ignore him mate, i own and love my shopsmith mk 5 but that cause its what i can afford. its a jack of all trades machine but some people in the owners community get a little touchy on it. if you already own dedicated tools i wouldn't recommend a shopsmith except as a great drill press. it works for its intended market of home diy stuff with limited space, not for pro wood working. the idea is solid and the execution is rock solid, but its an introductory machine and a compact multi use machine for small areas, pro gear will be better.

Hi Chris, I just thought I would pass along a way to turn square in 3 jaw chuck. Just take a round pipe or machine a slide in fit for the square bar, split it length
Wise, and chuck it up. It will act like a collet. Hope this helps. Jim

Can you reference your source for the carbide tips? Or at least list their shapes and sizes?

Will add it to the description, however if you are in Canada, you can either get them online, or in my case I get them from KMS tools, Busy Bee or Canadian woodworker. But you can even find them on Amazon if you search “carbide wood turning bit”
