I laughed when you said, "George Harrison's first solo album..." then picked up and put down 'Wonderwall'. What would have been even funnier had you also picked up 'Electronic Sound' then put that down as well - LOL!
Wall of Mud. LOL. Perfect description of his production quality. One can only imagine how this album would have sounded if were produced by George Martin.
I've said to friends that the 2021 remix feels like it could've been produced by George Martin, still lush, but more in keeping with the feel of 'Abbey Road'.
Absolutely would have been better. George Martin's orchestral arrangements alone would have made it sound better. Something cheesy about Spector's string arrangements, I'm not a musician, but this album and Let It Be just don't sound up par with the others.
Phil's production covers for the deficiency in George's vocals, something that the remix makes apparent. Love it or hate it, Phil's production is an integral part of the album, something George acknowledged in his 2001 edition.
I have the "Printed in Great Britain" edition. I bought it with my first proper wage packet in 1975/76. I bought it from Debenams in Bracknell and it had the smooth paper inner sleeves, which I foolishly replaced with the more common textured versions because my original smooth sleeves had seam splits from new and I wanted sleeves without seam splits.
I still have the boxed All Things Must Pass album I bought when I was in college (about 1975). The poster is still in the box, the only damage is four small holes in the corners made when I thumb tacked it to my dorm wall. Haven't listened to it in a long time.
I bought the 3CD edition. I would have purchased the 5 disc version if it had been priced at a reasonable cost. I thought the new mixes sounded okay and enjoyed the 17 track third disc very much. However, it seems after I’ve listened to a remixed album, I always revert back to the original and I seldom revisit the demos, early and/or alternate takes. I didn’t even consider the Super Duper Deluxe Uber Edition. I probably would have a few years ago when I just had to have everything, including the McCartney deluxe Wild Life/Red Rose Speedway/1971-73 Big Box. Thank you for another entertaining and humorous video. I am already looking forward to next Sunday’s presentation. Keep up the wonderful work.👍👍
That's right. The thrill doesn't last. You hear the bonus stuff once and then are you ever gonna listen to it again? They pushed all of George's half ass demos on this new release instead of take after take of the band building up each track with the layers. That's what should have been showcased.
@@pootle5096 OH very much so. The box set is to sell George's name to those who will eat it right up without stopping to think about what they're actually GETTING in this set which isn't much.
Dare I say that the "Wall of Mud" is what makes this such an epic and iconic album? Also, it wasn't all Phil Spector's doing. The vast majority of it was George Harrison, because Spector wasn't around for much of the album's production, and when he was, he apparently didn't say much, just made a few suggestions here and there, some of which Harrison accepted, some of which he rejected. This wasn't a _Let It Be_ scenario where Spector was given the unenviable task of salvaging an album that even the Beatles themselves weren't very enthusiastic about, this was George Harrison in complete control producing exactly the album he wanted.
I only got the 3 CD set myself, found the other demos online. I've compared it to the 1990s, 2001, 2014, and new 2020. I believe the new one has many improvements, and vocals have been brought to the forefront along with the Bass. I do find many of the backing instruments have been overshadowed. I see a bit above the 2014 remaster, and worth the purchase price I paid. My go to is the 2001 remix/remaster, I think the vocals and all instruments are given their space and clear sounding. Also George himself was involved in the total project. To my ears, I like the 2001 best, 2014 is very good and so is the new one. The Demos and Outtakes are well worth having.
I just got a cd copy from a friend today for my bday. Not the “gnome” set but the lovely smaller box set. I was and am thrilled. But I do wanna bring up the remixes that have appeared over the years. To me the original (US) copy was superb. Again it had a “feel” to it. I tend to agree that the UK version was a tad brighter but not distractingly so. I loved it as well. Not without hearing this new set I will say, stay as close to the original releases as possible. The warmth is there, as well as the power and soul. Remasters have almost made them brittle to my ears. But hey, I was a drummer for 40 years...🥴😁 Thanks for your views on The Uber set. To me, if you can afford and give it a good home, without the bragging rights, then have at it. The music’s still there.
I think I'll stick to my 2001 basic 2CD version for now. I mean you've got to draw the line somewhere with Beatle product or your house ends up looking like a museum.
Getting into your broadcasts recently and for Beatles pressings information I appreciate it so much, but I also am enjoying them for the filming and editing, and this one I immediately got into the sarcastic preamble, which I love. Thank you for your knowledge and film skills and humour also.
I suggest doing a review of Wonderwall...... I still have the original U.S. issue, bought when first released, complete with insert. For me, this album is by far THE MOST interesting of ANY of the solo Beatles work, far eclipsing all other solo Beatles undertakings. A go-to album in the days when I was dropping acid and mescaline. I still have the VHS release of the film of the same title...... which I need to revisit again, having not seen it in many years. As always, appreciation for your dedication, generosity of spirit and insights.
Thanks for this episode. I was apprehensive about the remix taking any of the power of the ATMP band. My ears couldn’t have been more happy. A lot of the instrumentation that was buried under the Wall Of Noise comes at you and George’s vocals never sounded better. I still love the original but this version has been my go to lately
Another great , humorous and informative video! I bought the 5 CD Deluxe Set and the Vinyl LP Set. And I have got to say I am very impressed with the remixes and the toning down of the "Spector wall of sound" . Paul Hicks and Dhani did an amazing job ! As much love as i have for the new box sets. I will still always have a soft spot for the original 1970 and 2001 versions !
I have the original vinyl from all those years ago.... brilliant first time I heard it... played through my Wharfedale speakers in the RAF Barrack room. Avid listeners waiting to hear what George had produced. Well, to an airman, the consensus was LOUD and brilliant. It was played for around 5 hours non-stop. I still play it on the turntable and modern Wharefdales. Still sounds wonderful and is often played. The new CD, received today, 3 CDs jobby, is different. I love the new sounds. I have the best of original and new. Enjoy. The wall of sound has more or less vanished and everything is balanced on the new CD. You pays your money and makes your choice. 50 years ago it was brilliant and today is almost as brilliant. Enjoy.
Hahaha! Great into! 🤣 I’m in the US, so I own an early US copy, and I’ll have to check which one exactly. I’ve heard the new one, and prefer my original US original pressing. Thanks for the wonderful video!
Found out the Apple Jam record was not remixed on the new editions. It was recorded live direct to stereo 2 track and can't be remixed. It still sounds like it got a little bass boost.
They should have made the 50th release a stripped down “naked” mix. While the original Spector version may feel heavy-handed with ‘verb at certain points, (i’m looking at you Wah Wah), the new mixes don’t have the right size and scope. The new drums sound great, the overall clarity/separation is great of course... but the new mixes don’t feel big in the right way. They actually lost some magic by cleaning the mixes up too much. While nice to hear this fresh take on it, 1970 is still the one to go back to. Love those alt takes tho!
I like the intro! Great vid as always, I have a 1st Canadian pressing of this album (unique stampers), has always sounded great to these ears. Took me a while to find a copy without a broken spine - I'm surprised you didn't mention that obvious design flaw, I have seen a lot of u.s./canadian copies where the thin plastic spine has dried out and is ripped or broken entirely. Even now when I open my box to play the records I am extra gentle.
The 2021 release of All Things Must Pass felt like having a wish granted. I always wanted to hear an honest-to-god remix of the whole album after being disappointed by different CD masterings of this original mix (not a vinyl guy). So to not feel fatigued and hear some clarity and warmth on songs like "My Sweet Lord" and "What Is Life" was nothing short of a revelation.
Never saw your reply, with RUclips being what it is: The 2001 release is a remaster with five bonus tracks. Only three of them are remixes by George Harrison, the other two are demos. In an odd choice, the bonus tracks are featured at the end of first CD, interrupting the album's original running order. While not the most elegant solution, I would have had the first two LPs on CD1, with the Apple Jams and bonus tracks on CD2. (Speaking of odd choices, that crayon coloured album artwork on the 2001 is also very tacky, imo)
I picked up the US printing a few years back for about $30. It had the poster of George inside but it has thumbtack holes in the corners, so the seller bundled it back in! It looked like Gandalf at first glance. It’s very dark and uninspiring but I’m glad it’s there. This album is just a delight, with Clapton and Gary Wright and Dave Mason and Billy Preston all contributing. I can’t imagine my vinyl collection without it.
I don't even have to watch this video to say without a doubt its treasure. Trying to think how he felt about the Beatles breaking up and then making this masterpiece brings on so many emotions. I love this album, im gonna have to listen to it, and The Beatles all day now, thank you!!
You keep referring to the 2001 as a "remix." It was not a remix; it was a remaster. "I still like the songs on the album and believe they can continue to outlive the style in which they were recorded. It was difficult to resist re-mixing every track. All these years later I would like to liberate some of the songs from the big production that seemed appropriate at the time but now seem a bit over the top with the reverb in the wall of sound." That quote is from the liner notes of the 2001 edition written by George Harrison. The principal point of this release was to finally do that remix that Harrison wanted but unfortunately he passed away before he could actually do it.
Yea I listened to it and that’s what it sounds like to me. Closer to his other solo work after that and how he mixed stuff. The presence of his solo and slide bits in the mix. Fits more with the rest of his catalog now the 2020 mix
Another great video Andrew! I just received the 5 CD and Blu-ray set and ordered a vinyl set. I love this record! I do love the remix but I don’t think it will replace the original but it is nice to have a choice. Looking forward to future videos from you! Take care!
I recently bought the 2020 remix of the album and I think its great. You hear instruments that were buried in the original mix plus you can hear them singing "Sir Frankie Crisp" (which I wasn't even aware it was even there, obviously buried way down in the mix), someone pointed it out on you tube. Of course it doesn't have the punch like the original and sounds more like regular album than the wall of sound that it is. I notice in your video it gave the song writing credit of "I'd Have You Anytime" to Harrison/Feldman. It's suppose to be Harrison/Dylan.
The first time I heard the background vocals on Sir Frankie Crisp I went “what the hell was that?” And immediately checked the original to see if it was there!
Great points here. First of all, Phil Spector and his "Wall of mud" production. That sums it up perfectly. I never understood the adoration of him as a producer past 1963. Second - remix album projects are only good to listen to a handful of times. Outtakes will never "replace" the proper versions that you have set in your mind's ear already.
Very funny intro...informative video as ever! I just got the 3 CD version (the 5 CD is way way overpriced for content/packaging), I am enjoying the new remix as a fun alternative, but as with the Beatles remixes the original mix will remain my go to, I have an excellent UK copy on vinyl
Hi, i still have the 8 track edition of this album housed in the little cardboard box in excellent condition, and it’s a USA copie, cause i don’t think that they did a Canadian copie of this 8 track. I also have the Beatles White album in 8 track in the cardboard box, in excellent shape.
This pooh pooing Phil S. started with Geo.The hugeness of the sound, quality of the song craft, and packaging made it a success. Remember, they still had to think about how it would sound coming out of a car radio! I got it for Xmas’70 1st release.😄
Yesterday I compared the new mix with my 1970 pressing (-1 on all sides and Eric Clapton gets the credit). Personally I will play the 1970 one in the future as well. More lively and engaging. The new mix is not bad, but some of the songs like My Sweet Lord and Wah Wah are just smooth and dull...like the life has been sucked out from them. But that's just my opinion :) But the five albums in the Super Deluxe Vinyl box of demos and jams are great. And the 60 page book as well. Worth the price? Come back in ten years and ask me how many times I have played it. But as a fan - yes...
I found my copy for $40 a few years back in a record store. As is unfortunately common for the US boxes, there was a bit of tape on there but nothing too bad. The records themselves were in beautiful condition and sound wonderful, and I suppose that's the most important thing. Anyway, I haven't been tempted by the remix to be honest... I wouldn't want to get rid of my original copy and having two box sets would take up a lot of valuable vinyl real estate.
Wonderwall Music IS my favorite Beatles solo album!!! The mixture of psychedelia and Indian classical-- which is where the theme for the album cover comes from-- is tailor made for my interests!
It's ironic that George despised corporate greed..yet...ATMP Uber is now a thing. Loved your cheeky intro Andrew and the content top notch as usual. All the best mate :)
Another great video from Andrew, but I have to protest a little bit when he talks of "Classical Music" showing a box set of was is in fact "Early Music", or if you prefer "Medieval Music", by David Munroe. Incidentally, Munroe was also heavily involved with the English folk-rock scene of the early 1970s. He knew where the stuff was coming from and worked with people such as Shirley Collins and The Albion Band. There were also links to Britain's best ever modern acoustic guitarist John Renbourn, the band Pentangle, the Young Tradition and many more. I wouldn't be surprised if George Harrison was well aware of his work too. Now back to George ...
Something tells me this release was supposed to come out in 2020. That being the case, I'm excited for the other delayed Beatles release content that should be on the horizon (I'm looking at you, Let It Be)
Is there an Uber Get Back/Let It Be coming? The finished movie(s) plus all the various music formats with ephemera, like a replica reel? This All Things Uber set may have been a test, in part.
Great video Sir. My original copy has a very warped sounding side..almost like the tape machine started spinning at a slower rate. I've heard that there was alot of them. It can be fun to listen to if you want that particular effect. The way people perceive sounds in their minds is fascinating. Wall of mud!
Honestly, if I want to hear a song taken to its basic elements in which I can hear the inner workings I would rather hear the demo and a few takes building upon that with the band. I think its much more interesting to see the creative process than to rearrange the final artistic creation.
I feel the same way about these remixed album projects. They are a fun way to hear favorite albums in a different light, but ultimately I end up going back to the originals that sound right to me. The remixes eventually end up sitting on the shelf collecting dust. The only exception might be the Yellow Submarine “Songtrack” from 1999, which is still a great compilation with excellent remixes.
Hilarious start, hats off on all levels! Despite its flaws in production, the original release is and will for me always be the truest edition. Can't say the new one, which I own the 5cd-set if, impresses much or will be something I'll go back and listen to. Nor value for money or value for sound. Expected more.
I notice at the end of your excellent video. Picture discs are being featured soon, the only one I have is All you need is love from 1987. Bought it in Woolworths. You could get the black vinyl version or as a 13 year old a flashy picture disc I think for the same price. I notice its in mono which is a shame as it would be good in stereo. Plus like picture discs the non picture bit is silent but as soon as your stylus hits the picture part it is like a rumble, especially if the picture bit is uneven, silent then rumble as the record goes around. It does look quite funky as it goes around and I quite like it and glad as a younger me decided to buy it
I bought this CD box in 2002 and in that era I sent a few difference of original CD,because no give that sound for hear.More late the LP realized in 180g,but the sound is low and don’t achieve hear very well. Now this new remixes coming and waiting good sound and can have fun with it.No disappoint me in this time.Is very hard for hear this album of George.Thank you Uchino of Japan.I see you Andrew in next time.
When the band is over,George have infinity songs for maker a disc and be here now.But with this new remaster make in this time, the box coming with five lps. This is a significativy as he have more songs, but no have time in put all my guess,so was be no 3 Lp and 5 discs.George was quiet in group, but writing songs he maker and after this release in this album.Great George!! Thank you Uchino.I see you in next time Andrew.
Hee Hee luv it!!! yes the Cash Cow continues........I'm ordering the lp, cd , 8track, USB & Digital Streaming sets oh forgot also include the Reel to reel set as well.........
Oh, the irony! of your introduction! Love the gnomes and the zero dolby extras in the trash bin! And I agree that Wonderwall is the first serious Beatles solo effort (forget Family Way). On a more serious note, I bought the album when it came out, and what a strange beast it turns out to be! STCH 639 of course. Recorded in England on the labels, but also Manufactured ('Mfd.') in the UK, but bought in Germany in November or December 1970, with Eric Clapton in the credits and the poster 'printed in USA'. No address in the inner orange lid, no 'printed' stamp either (obviously your second version of the box). It seems that the box was the US version in Germany, too. Now for 'the best-sounding version of the album' (UK first): YEX B 17 - 1, B 18 -1 U (STCH 1-639 on the label); YEX B 19 - 1U, B 20 - 1U (STCH 2-639 on the label, obviously). (I won't bother with the jam LP right now). What strikes me is that UK seems to have pressed records not only for their own market (biggest in Europe then, 2nd worldwide) but also for (then) West Germany, second biggest, although they had to import boxes and prints from the US at the same time and although West German Electrola had shown they could supply pressings and sleeves for more than one country from 1968. So what was going on? Fun fact: In the UK, ATMP was kept from the top spot by Bridge Over Troubled Water, or so it seemed at the time. Later research showed that charts positions were frozen (in the news outlets) for a time because of a Royal Mail strike which prevented sales figures to be registered on time (selected shops turned in their sales by mail at the time). As it turned out, ATMP had overtaken the Bridge during the time that no data was available for the media. Records (in more than one sense) were corrected decades later.
OMG Funny. To finally answer your question to me some time ago - YES I will be your agent. Last year I found a minty, possibly unplayed US Capitol 1988 ATMP on Ebay. Even though I assume this lp was cut from the same (second generation??) master as the US original issue, there is a bonus here. This album was cut by Specialty Records Co. at the time when Capitol began farming out lp production. As you once mentioned, Capitol used vinyl with impurities. SRC used virgin vinyl. This lp plays much cleaner with dead quiet backround than what I remember my original sounded like. Capitol also used leftover original issue orange apple labels for this release and included the color inner sleeves and poster. Info from the Perry Cox book. Cost was about $20. Great video, Andrew.
Fascinating and in depth as ever, with added hilarity this is the best All Things video going amidst a thousand anniversary unboxings! I have to say I’m still none the wiser about my vinyl copy though… The box seems to be the earliest type, thin, Eric included, no address, made in USA, but the label has got the Mecolico publishing credits and no ‘Recorded in England’… anyone out there have any idea when it might have been pressed/produced? It definitely smells 50 years old… 🤔
Just checked my album and it's the Uk made Apple STCH 639. So glad that it's still in good condition. I also have the 2001 3 CD album. I gave the 2021 release a pass. Didn't see the point in having a third album.
Nicely done! No Uber Edition for me. Best thing I've seen all week! Thank you! I thouroughly enjoyed listening to and A/B'ing both the 2014 remaster and the 2021 remix. I enjoyed the new mix. A rare misstatement about the 2001 reissue, it wasn't remixed, it was only remastered.
Thanks for another great informative presentation! I have a US copy, and yes the box is pretty flimsy and just barely deep enough. The inner sleeve for the first record is missing the copyright info at the end of the lyrics, so it appears some misprinted copies are out there.
Another great video, Andrew. You've inspired me to play my original LP version my Uncle gave me years ago. I live in Australia by the way. He also gave me his Concert For Bangladesh LP box set that is slightly water damaged but the records look like they're in perfect condition. Have you done a review on this one?
There is one other box lid that you didn't list. Inside my top box lid I have the small Printed in USA stamp as well as Apple Records address at the bottom. It still lists Eric Clapton under Guitar. Thanks for the video review, Andrew.
Another great video filled with fantastic information. I don't own this album. ...yet...in any format. ..so watching this was pretty important for me as I'm thinking of getting the vinyl version. Speaking of 3 LP album releases. ..the other album that comes to mind is Yes - Yessongs. That was a live album that Atlantic Records were not too happy about releasing ...as they felt it was a very costly release to make. But they soon changed their opinions as it became one of the biggest selling albums in Germany. ..and did very well in other countries around the world.
Loved this video Andrew very funny 😁 also informative. I have a first press UK copy (recorded in England labels, printed in USA inside the lid and also on the bottom right of the front cover). Box and sleeves are in now tatty but the records are clean as a whistle and as you say are easily the best sounding. My early 80s (White inner box, sleeves, lighter vinyl and slightly less sharp cover image) sounds great too. I also have the clumsy first double CD from I think the late 80s.. not sure how that sounds..
A comedy skit? As a long-time fan and collector, I feel that you have not been sufficiently reverent to the memory of a legend. This is, after all, 2021 and humour has officially been cancelled, because every joke in the world will presumably offend someone, somewhere. As I sit here on my Limited Edition 'All Things Must Pass' crate, clutching Olivia's personal thank-you note, I can hear the bailiffs pounding on the door. But it was all worth it.
I’m enthralled with the new mix. I’ve always found the original album tough to listen to because of Spector’s overuse of reverb. The new one strips a lot of that away. I’ve already listened 3 times; that never would have happened with the older mix. Also: a clarification: I don’t believe the 2001 version was a remix, apart from the very different version of My Sweet Lord. It was a remaster. I’m less sure of this, but I’ve read that George wanted to issue a remix, but EMI shot that down. Oh, and I loved the bit at the beginning. And the Wonderwall joke.
Excellent beginning Andrew. And no I don't have the new one yet even though I ordered it well within enough time so I would get it by the 6th releases date but still have to wait until Tuesday 10th. And you say I should be able to get an original UK for reasonable money because they were pressed into the eighties but you try and tell that to EVERYONE selling one on eBay. They all want original 1970 near mint money
Love the channel. First part-too funny!!! And no doubt ,with the humour of George. If he saw it ,wud still b laughing. Would love to find a good UK. pressing of original, for sure. Keep up the great,& sometimes humorous work, M
Really interesting! I own an old hybrid copy, mixture of manufactures, made in USA except the poster and vinyls themselves which were made in UK. Not sure if it is an early pressing or not! Love it, anyway!
I love the album All Things Must Pass it was a great album to listen to and I think it’s one of the best albums that he’s ever made. The very first George Harrison album I’ve listened to before and that was the very best of George Harrison released on Capitol records which had some Beatles songs that George Harrison sings plus some of the solo work.
That intro was HILARIOUS!! I actually laughed (which is rare when I watch RUclips…)! Also, the video is (as always (of course)) a wonderful piece of art. Exited about the Cd and picture disc video(s?)!!
Great introduction Andrew 😂. My vinyl box is American with a handwritten date of when it was bought, August 1970. After watching your video I'm pretty sure mine is a 3rd edition box but there are no numbers in the dead wax. 🤔
Thanks, Andrew, you had me in stitches ! I do have a new copy, and I think it sounds great. I never liked Spector's production, some songs were unlistenable, and this version , while not perfect, is so much better. This will be my go to listen from now on. I really love disc 3, with just Ringo and Klaus; amazing stuff. Thanks for another wonderfully informative video.
I have a German 1st version (1C 192-04 707/8/9 Y) With the following: - Eric Clapton listed; - Apple's New York address listed; - No "Made in USA" - Glossy colored inner sleeves "Printed in Germany" - Box entirely in orange from the inside (except black inners on spine) - Local German Electrola pressings (A-1/B-1/A-1/B-1/AX-1/B-1). However, I never compared it to the UK.
I bought the US vinyl edition back in November 1970 when it was first released. I still think ATMP is the best Beatles solo album ever released. Second place goes to Paul's BOTR and a close third is John's Imagine. Out or Ringo's albums I must say that RINGO is my favorite. Okay, back to ATMP. I have the 5 CD edition of the 50th anniversary release. I really like it. Is it better than the original? IMO you cannot make such a claim. Why? The mix is completely different. I love that it has been de-Spectorized. It's almost, but not quite, an unplugged version. Will I still listen to the original? Of course. It and the 50th are two different animals if you will. That is if you think a gnome is an animal.
Great video as always Andrew. Really made me smile. I’ll stuck with my UK pressing which cost me a tenner at a record fare back in the 90’s. Sorry for the heresy but I’ve never enjoyed this album. I’ll give the unSpectored edition a listen and failing that I’ll just have to concede that after 30 odd years of trying this one just isn’t for me.
they say time flies when you're having fun, and this video is certainly proof of that. keep up the good work! ps: the title says "all thing must pass", just noticed
The 2020 remix is, like the Beatles remixes, a mixed bag. Some tracks I love, some I’m mystified by (what happened to the drums on “What is Life”?). However, I’ve never been clear on what the preferred vinyl pressing was, so I’ll be checking online for a UK set!
Great video. Im now going to hunt down a UK OG. The new Re issue is nice, really good on more mellow songs. Wah Wah sounds worse and even more cluttered than the original mix, but it's among the worse on this new edition, IMO. Good to know I can search up to early 80s for an original UK. Cheers.
This was quite interesting because I thought I have a later US pressing, but my copy has all the marks you mentioned of a first US pressing (small circle symbol inside lid Printed in USA, etc) - except for the runouts. I cannot find an exact match for mine which has etched STCH - 1 - 639 - Z - 1. #4 on side one with a sort of asterisk symbol. There's another sort of circular shape in the runout kind of off by itself. Anyway, I liked the detail you went into, but now I'm confused about what pressing I may have.
German original, never heard the outakes so I really am enjoying them - all but a few (what is life) sound lush and a breath of fresh air. Not murky. SO the 8lp set wasn’t bad - well the remasteredd album. Gno Gnomes gnown in this productions gnomenclature Did I say I have a German Original?
The only one I like to get for the new remix, would be the album splatter vinyl set. Just to collect. I’m having with the 2001 remaster. And the 50th. A good set of headphones, and Spotify do the math, it’s free.
My UK box set has the 'Made and Printed in Great Britain' inside the left side and the catalogue number on the spine 'Apple STCH 639'. I have to admit to preferring the Australian issue which came in a triple gatefold fully laminated on the outside. It's a beautiful issue. Did any other country issue this as a triple gatefold?
I think the 2020 remix was pretty good. The vocals stood out a bit too much for my liking on some songs but it’s good. Excited to pick up the 8 LP boxset so I can listen to the outtakes and stuff.
My first experience of ATMP was via the 1st of the 2 cassettes from the library (gold top). I've a Canadian Capitol Box STCH 639 (LP 1 G2/G3) LP 2 (G2/G2), LP (G2/G3). Box Manufactured in California. I'm interested in the new version but not enough to buy, and certainly not the extortionate one. Interesting to hear Bobby Whitlock after his first listen to the vinyl...he wasn't impressed (to say the least).
Very good and interesting reviews. I bought the box of 5 discs, and I was not very pleasantly surprised by the small size, much smaller than Lennon's and obviously, McCartney's. Instead, the audio is remarkable in terms of the quality of the demos and outtakes. The remastering is controversial because there are elements that are much more present than the original, so it is NOT the same album as it originally came out (listen for example to the background voices of "Let It Roll"). But the bottom line is pretty good on balance. Greetings from Argentina.
Being the publisher of the Vinylology book (Apcor Books), may I thank you for the kind words you had to say about this book.
You're welcome, Ed.
I laughed when you said, "George Harrison's first solo album..." then picked up and put down 'Wonderwall'. What would have been even funnier had you also picked up 'Electronic Sound' then put that down as well - LOL!
On Zapple, too.
The earlier US pressings sound just great with a good phono cartridge and speakers. Rich and doomy. Wouldn't change a thing.
Phil's production covers for the deficiency in George's vocals, something that the remix makes apparent. Love it or hate it, Phil's production is an integral part of the album, something George acknowledged in his 2001 edition.
You got me, I thought you had an actual sponsorship for the first 30 seconds there. Laughed out loud when the ‘Trash Can Edition’ appeared.
2001 set wasn't a remix. It was a remaster. The only new mixes were the bonus tracks.
Thx for that info.
Thought so!
Keep up the wonderful work.👍👍
Thanks Roger. More soon!
That's right. The thrill doesn't last. You hear the bonus stuff once and then are you ever gonna listen to it again? They pushed all of George's half ass demos on this new release instead of take after take of the band building up each track with the layers. That's what should have been showcased.
Yes, I have to agree I always go back to the original too.
The new boxset is a shocking cost. Why is it almost twice the cost of the Lennon sets?
The only answer I can think of is "greed".
"Felling a tree for a bookmark that you will never use." Priceless.
Noticed that the extras from disc one are missing. They’re on the 2001 edition I believe. A little disappointing. Guess I’ll have to own 2 copies.
The new edition sounds fantastic. This is the best of those I ever heard
Thank you. Glad you enjoyed it!
Enjoy.
The intro is hilarious. I spat my water out once I saw what's in there.
Hahaha! Great into! 🤣 I’m in the US, so I own an early US copy, and I’ll have to check which one exactly. I’ve heard the new one, and prefer my original US original pressing. Thanks for the wonderful video!
You've outdone yourself with this one, the most essential Beatles/vinyl channel on RUclips!
Thank you, Frazer!
Excellent video, love the humor and the insights, too
Found out the Apple Jam record was not remixed on the new editions.
Are you sure the 2001 version is really remixed or just remastered?
Thanks for watching, Wes.
Well, what do you think about the synchronization mistake in 2020 Remix of "Isn't It A Pity (Version 2)" starting from 2:18?
Wow! That’s definitely more than just a pity: it’s embarrassing....
Who knows?
Remix/ remaster so long as no one thinks high-lighting Spectors "wall of mud" is a good idea!
Another great video Andrew! I just received the 5 CD and Blu-ray set and ordered a vinyl set. I love this record! I do love the remix but I don’t think it will replace the original but it is nice to have a choice. Looking forward to future videos from you! Take care!
Thanks Bill. Stay tuned!
I heard that as well. It’s still sounds epic but the dynamics shine through
I liked it a lot! To me it sounds better balanced than the original. George’s voice sounds clear!
Outtakes will never "replace" the proper versions that you have set in your mind's ear already.
blimey, that intro was a work of art!
I love the intro to this! You’ve got an amazing sense of humour Andrew!👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Thanks so much!
@@Parlogram no worries mate!
But that's just my opinion :)
But the five albums in the Super Deluxe Vinyl box of demos and jams are great. And the 60 page book as well.
Worth the price? Come back in ten years and ask me how many times I have played it. But as a fan - yes...
The box itself is the 1/6.
Another great job Andrew!! The Beatles live on!! Love this channel...
Thanks so much, Grover!
Cheers Steve, glad you enjoyed it
Did he really? I thought it was paying UK taxes.
You must have a early US pressing. My ATMP does the same thing. I hear it most on the end of side one and two.
Jajajaja Trash can edition with Zero dolby!! I did expect that. That’s hilarious!!! Great job!
It does look quite funky as it goes around and I quite like it and glad as a younger me decided to buy it
I've owned 3 pressings. Canada, USA, and a 1976 Japan. All sounded great but I kept the Japan pressing for the beautifully pressed vinyl.
I found my "All things must pass" lp box set at a thrift store for $1.98
It's the best sounding album with no complaints.
Great post as always.
Thanks Bob. The check's in the post!
Brazilian 1st edition had an amazing sound quality, something unusual by the time !
Glad you enjoyed it, Lee and thanks for your comment.
I’ve got the new 3LP splatter vinyl and to me is sounds really good, I don’t have an original to compare but I think it sounds really good.
I agree, the stripping away of all that unnecessary reverb and lost in the mix echo makes this new version a joy to listen to.
George was apparently keen to supervise a remix, but was too ill.
Great line Andrew “Phil Spector’s wall of mud. “. Let it be naked is so much improved for not having the slush. What do you think?
I'm still very attached to the original.
I consider the "Naked" album more Canon than the 1970 release. My opinion only.
Love the channel. First part-too funny!!! And no doubt ,with the humour of George. If he saw it ,wud still b laughing.
Would love to find a good UK. pressing of original, for sure. Keep up the great,& sometimes humorous work, M
Thanks Michael, glad you enjoyed it.
Thank you, Olav. Stay tuned!
@@Parlogram I will ( ;) )!
Great introduction Andrew 😂. My vinyl box is American with a handwritten date of when it was bought, August 1970. After watching your video I'm pretty sure mine is a 3rd edition box but there are no numbers in the dead wax. 🤔
I bought the 5LP 50th anniversary, love it
The Monkees' Peter Tork and the famous Eric Clapton are on that Wonderwall album.
Glad you enjoyed it, David.
I have a German 1st version (1C 192-04 707/8/9 Y)
With the following:
- Eric Clapton listed;
- Apple's New York address listed;
- No "Made in USA"
- Glossy colored inner sleeves "Printed in Germany"
- Box entirely in orange from the inside (except black inners on spine)
- Local German Electrola pressings (A-1/B-1/A-1/B-1/AX-1/B-1).
Well at Lest Wonderwall is one of his top three LPs imho 😎
Love the new mix. Bought the 3 CD version. Good enough for me. In the end it's all about the music, isn't it?
Anyway, I liked the detail you went into, but now I'm confused about what pressing I may have.
love your sense of humor
German original, never heard the outakes so I really am enjoying them - all but a few (what is life) sound lush and a breath of fresh air. Not murky.
SO the 8lp set wasn’t bad - well the remasteredd album. Gno Gnomes gnown in this productions gnomenclature
Did I say I have a German Original?
I had the purple label Capital edition back in the 80's, which was pressed in Canada.
Would love to get my hands on a original British pressing.
I have a 1970 Australian pressing, I don't think there was ever a box for this version. $3.00 from a charity shop, can't complain !
1:01 That time Paul McCartney was replaced by one of The Cowsills
I have an old box set of Bing Crosby somewhere....
