“The Castle of Cagliostro” should be viewed as well. Not only is it Miyazaki’s first film, but it influenced both the Disney Renaissance & many Pixar directors. A truly important animated film.
I was gonna say the same thing! Not just Disney though, I see references to it EVERYWHERE, like the Bad Guys, Indiana Jones, the Goonies, Cowboy Bebop, Simpsons, the newest Mission Impossible and so much more! It's one of my favorite movies of all time and it's influence both on Ghibli and the film industry as a whole!
@@Nastyn1nja808 Yep, he co-directed 12 or so episodes of part 1 which are amazing, and he also directed 2 episodes of part 2, one of which has the robot from castle in the sky in it!
Grave of the Fireflies made me bawl my eyes out like a baby in my college elective class…OMG! 😭😭🤧 Snot and everything, I was so embarrassed, but also so in awe at the story telling and how the artist gave emotion to the drawings. Still an exceptional Japanese anime that is worth watching at least once. If you’re brave enough 😂
It’s nice to see a movie once in a while where the plot isn’t “we need to save the world/universe!” Additional trivia on Princess Mononoke: the English dub script was adapted by Neil Gaiman.
I'm excited for more Studio Ghibli! Howl's Moving Castle is my fav, but I love a bunch of them. Whisper of the Heart, Nausicaa Valley of the Winds, Castle in the Sky, The Cat Returns. Oh, and Arrietty!
I adore Paprika, and it's definitely a mind@#$%, but I'd argue that his earlier film Perfect Blue holds up well especially since the themes it deals with apply just as much in 2023. It's just a difficult watch.
Watched for the First time a couple years ago. This was my introduction to Studio Ghibli and Miyazki films. I have now also seen Porco Rosso, Kiki's Delivery Service, Spirited Away, Howl's Moving Castle, Princess Mononoke & Castle Cagliostro. I have liked all of these films. But My Neighbor Totoro and Porco Rosso have been my absolute favorite. The score and emotional scenes in My Neighbor Totoro are incredible. Joe Hisashi's score is one of my all time favorites. And Porco Rosso is beautifully animated drawing inspirations from Italian landscapes. The Flying scenes are beautifully drawn and I love Porco Rosso, Michael Keaton himself. Plan on seeing Ponyo and Castle in the Sky at some point to add to my list. But love you're doing these reactions. Especially on the animation side. Just rewatched Iron Giant and plan on rewatching Rango at some point. Those two in my opinion are two of the greatest animated films of all time. Hopefully you guys can talk about them
I love that this one movie was enough to make you guys want to keep pursuing more unique movies indefinitely 😂 Anime movies very often have this same type of format, where you are thrown in the middle of someone’s story and learn the details subtly, lot’s of drama movies even take on more non-linear formats like Only Yesterday. I’m excited to see more reviews! This is a great idea for this new channel. I’d say watch Your Name, and Grave of Fireflies, you guys tearing up at Fireflies would make for some good clips. 😆
Love the reaction and pivot to Ghibli studio. Hope you release all Ghibli reaction on youtube as well. Can't wait to see your reaction to other anime movies like Akira or Ghost in the shell
Some context on the voice be beneficial here. When Gibli was first being distributed to the US it was through Disney, Prince Moninoke was the first of those films. I think the weight of disney and putting money in it likely got that cast. A side note the first Gibli movie that was nomited for an Oscar was Spirited away which is mind blowing, but never a best picture. These films really a good reminder of how a large portion of american culture looks at animation as kid only Gibli so so deep and while there for kids sucks in all ages.
I recommended a couple of different ones on the reaction vid but I think you guys would also get a big kick out of Ponyo, similar vibe to Totoro and an absolutely incredible food scene (and some Tina Fey voice work in the dub!)
I recommend "Laputa: Castle in the Sky." In Japan, it is a Studio Ghibli classic along with "Totoro" and "Nausicaa," but in the U.S., it is a bit of a shame that only "Spirited Away" and "Howl's Moving Castle" are known. Miyazaki's films always include scenes in which characters use the wind to fly. (Totoro with a frame, Kiki with a broom) Each scene is very impressive, beautiful, and powerful. Please pay attention to the flying scenes in Ghibli films! You may not feel like watching "Laputa: Castle in the Sky" because of its plain thumbnail, but you should see it at least once. By the way, the director of "Howl's Moving Castle" is Miyazaki's son.
The one from Studio Ghibli I’ve seen most is Spirited Away, followed by Howl’s Moving Castle, and I know certain extremely fascinating things about the British fantasy book that’s based on
Please consider watching at least one anime in the original Japanese with English subtitles. A lot of the cultural flavor and subtext literally gets lost in translation.
I also think they should watch them in the original Japanese. I took a class in college and we only watched movies in Japanese with English subtitles …wow. I don’t know any Japanese and I didn’t have trouble enjoying the movies.
Kicki's is based on Stockholm Sweden. Is was supposed to be a Pippi Longstocking movie in the beginning but I think the negotiations fell through somehow but Gibli had already done some sightseeing for inspiration and loved the city so they made Kicki's instead.
Ironically, the original author of Kikis Delivery Service was NOT happy with the proposed changes to the story for the adaptation, until she met Miyazaki and the rest of the Ghibli crew, which convinced her to give them her blessing.
I will say, I preferred the Streamline dub they did in the 90s. Maybe it’s through rose glasses, but I felt there was north depth to the cadence of the actors. Maybe that’s just me.
I'd recommend the Cowboy Bebop series, since the Cowboy Bebop film takes place betwen eps 22 and 23, and is almost a standalone work, whereas the series itself had such a massive influence on Anime as a whole. Ghost in the Shell (1995) was very important and influential, but I feel both seasons of GitS SAC are the superior works. (And I say that having read the GitS manga long before the film or the later series debuted). Apparently they rereleased GitS 1995 with added CGI, but I never watched it. The GitS 2 film wasn't...great.
I'm not sure how to figure out what you can and can't react to right now, but if you are able, I highly recommend Makoto Shinkai's stuff. A great place to start is Voices of a Distant Star!
I, in equal measure, WANT and DO NOT WANT you guys to do Grave on the reaction channel🥴 Also another one that I’d love for you to watch is “Wolf Children”❤
First time I saw this movie, I was thinking there mom was a little too close to one of two cities in 1945 which caused her sickness. Needless to say, I was overjoyed at the ending and the animated sequences of the end credits. To think this came out the same year as Grave of the Fireflies, that would be some messed up/cathartic double feature. (I know that reaction is not going to happen and I understand)
I'm on the fence about Akira. It was very influential for its time, and it did help Katsuhiro Otomo develop the ending to his manga, but the film adaptation left so much of the story on the table, in order to keep it at feature film length, which made it a little disappointing in hindsight.
The fan making Adam’s hair look magical. 😂
He is just sitting on Totoros belly, getting his hair moved by Totoros sleepy breath

Not only that, but Miyazaki's influence in that film really helped expand what the later Lupin III productions were capable of.

My nieces favorite film.

Summer Wars is a really good anime film you would enjoy. It has a great blend of action and emotion.
Double recommend. It's basically a refined version of the Digimom movie 🤣
