This episode might make you light headed. High altitude mines can sometimes be the most interesting and this one didn't disappoint either. In this episode I take you on a full explore of the Soaring Eagle Mine and I try out my new gimbaled helmet cam for hands free exploring up tall ladders or crawling into tight spaces.

Abandoned & Forgotten Places
Documenting abandoned mines like never before!
Let's take abandoned mine exploring to the next level!
With your support you can help make this the best abandoned mine exploring channel on RUclips!
Shot entirely in 4K! ...so, turn up those video settings!
On this channel we go deep... REALLY DEEP into abandoned mines and tunnels all throughout the western United States. We researched some of the harder to find mines and hiked or 4x4 back into them to explore and reveal their hidden secrets. Many of these remote locations are filled with cool artifacts, antiques and unique geology that will have you guessing as to why the old prospectors worked so hard to find gold, silver, and other minerals.
A&FP moves just a bit slower as compared to other mine exploring channels. Gly discusses why the miners chose these sites and he points out the geology and minerals that got them excited. Veins of quartz filled with gold and silver made many men lose sleep in the 1800’s and early 1900’s and modern prospecting still does to this very day.
DANGERS? Oh yes, there’s allot of dangers associated with old mines. Un-exploded dynamite, blasting caps, bad air, bats, spiders, and snakes all find their home in abandoned mine shafts and tunnels. Oh, and let’s not forget rotting timbers, flooded passages and collapsing rock!
Gly takes abandoned mine exploring seriously with all the proper safety equipment, training, and experience necessary to do this activity as safe as possible but that doesn’t mean we can’t have a bit of fun along the way. “Gly”, your host and his band of crazy characters “Old Bob” (Gly’s Jeep), “Quackers” (Gly’s duck) and “Bobbie” (Gly’s hula girl) are sure to brighten your day with their comments and silly antics. Heck, they may even give you a chuckle or two.
Just like Saturday morning cartoons before the internet was invented, Abandoned and Forgotten Places uploads each Saturday at 7:00AM PST. (that’s 10:00AM for you eastern folks) so don’t forget to click that subscribe button and bell icon to receive notifications of new episodes!
Please LIKE, SHARE, SUBSCRIBE and COMMENT! All these things help grow our channel and your financial support helps us find new locations and helps put fuel into “Old Bobs” tank. Old Bob, thanks you!
Ok, now for the ugly stuff...

Each week it seems the productions just get better and better. You've come a long way in a short amount of time Gly. Seems you may have found a second calling. That drone was a great investment, and your narration skills are some of the best I've ever heard. Thanks for sharing and caring about the videos you put out. I believe you're on your way to your wish of having the best mine exploring channel out there. Awesome job as always Otto. I hope one day to run into you out on the trails. You never know, as big as it is, this can be a small world sometimes. Stay safe Buddy.
“Gly”: Thanks George, I really appreciate the compliment. Thank you very much.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces Your video quality is amazing too!
I really appreciate your slow turn around, helps keep me from getting motion sick and keep good directional perspective. Great filming!
It's like Saturday morning cartoons! I love this show! Thanks Gly!
Exactly, I look forward to my Saturday mornings again ! Thanks Gly, always great content !
what are sat. morning cartoons?

45:24 - I saw daylight at the end of that rock pile, looked like an exit to me.
I think so too. Also note the black widow near the exit. At that point, you were probably mere feet from sunlight.
I just had the funniest thought of you stumbling across active mining on one of your explores, and just walking up to them with your pads and helmet and cameras etc, and the only thing you say is "What year is it, Citizen?" and then walking back into the mine and out of sight after they reply.
I mean, go back and talk to them, but that would be a GREAT prank for about 3 min while they all just looked around like you were the terminator or something LOL
"Gly": LMAO! Now that would be funny! I'll remember that!
Wait! I can see daylight peeking through the top of that drift!
Nice to see this one hasn't gotten gated like so many others have. I was at this one eight years ago, so I always wondered if it had gotten gated in the meantime. Things still look pretty much the same in your video as what I found when I was there. We didn't explore this one as much as you did. Ours was more of a cursory exploration. Really wasn't into climbing ladders back in those early days. Nice video!
“Gly”: Thanks Frank! I liked this location allot because it had that really old mine classic look about it especially the portal. This was a really great site to document.
Abandoned and Forgotten Places I agree about that portal having a very classic look to it. In fact, I really have never seen one like it since. Also, the tram station at the top of the hill is cool. Never have seen something like that, either. It’s a very unique site! I was just glad to see that the portal is still open at this late date. Like I said, I had always wondered about that one. By any chance, did you stop at the small talc mine that’s lower on the mountain? As you’re going up the road towards the Soaring Eagle Mine, it would be off to the right on a branching road. I never made it over to that talc mine, believe it or not! I got a report, though, years ago that there is no underground access there even though ore cart tracks can be seen in the satellite imagery. Heard it was collapsed.
“Gly”: I know exactly the one your talking about. I have that talc mine on my itinerary but I waiting for all of these after shocks to settle down a bit before going into soft strata mines. It does look interesting and your right... it does have noticeable rail that can be seen on Google Earth. While I wait for things to settle down a bit I’ve been working on a very large mine over the last week. You may have documented the one I’m working on once before, Part 1 begins this coming Saturday. No spoilers! Lol
“Gly”: Followup: Indeed, you Paul and Justin did document the mine I’m working on now back in 2016. Part 1 and 2 will be similar to what you guys discovered but after that Part 3 or 4 has me exploring the escape routs and stopes. I think you’ll find it interesting that the mine hasn’t changed much since you guys were there.
Abandoned and Forgotten Places If it’s the one I’m thinking of, be careful on that one level where the major collapse was! The rock down there is very crumbly compared to the rest of the mine. That collapse has pretty much sealed off that level anyway so there’s not much to explore on that level from what I can remember.
I saw daylight at the top of that escape route at about 45:20. Thanks for another fine episode!
Good eye!! I'm interested to know where that would have popped out.
Keep putting out quality videos like this and one day you will join the ranks of RUclipsrs with dozens of people writing 'first' in the comments. That's when you know you've made it big!
Might I suggest that with an explosives box at the adit, you might want to turn it over with your walking stick as it is a great place for snakes to hide. I learned the hard way that scorpions and snakes find the boxes to be an excellent shelter. This is a great tour and shows a lot about the geology of slip faults. Looks like it might be fun to see if that last passage on the escape route could be cleared. Thanks for another great video !!
I had one drop down into some core boxes from the brow of a portal. It was more angry about that than I was, got ready to strike a friend who was exploring with me, and I blew it in three pieces with a 12-gauge.
Your intros just keep getting better and better. Thank you for these fascinating episodes especially during these strange times we are living these days. They are a bit of a mental get away for me.
Really cool mine, I love that escape route except that it didn't go anywhere! You should have added "Not any more!" to those signs. Thanks, Gly, see ya next week. Stay safe.
I really dig your short history on the mine at the beginning of your videos now.
“Gly”: Thank you!
Thanks Gly, have a great week!
I love how he explained everything
That was right out of a movie adventure , to bad it dead ended !!
That explore was epic Gly, going up the escape route was absolutely awesome. Thank you for sharing your epic adventures absolute class, your commentary makes me feel as if I was there with you. Stay safe Gly. 🇬🇧🇬🇧🛸🛸👍👍
This is the best video yet, fantastic to join you on you adventures. Amazing escape route
“Gly”: Thank you!
Realizing this may not get read as it's 3 years old but anyone else notice that the "right-hand" rule seems to have gone out the window on this haulage adit, Gly seemed to bounce back and forwards on which way he was going, I think he missed another drift on the way back to the escape ladder? At 16:37 he didn't explain the sacks (no doubt samples) and the other tool next to those modified pieces of rail.
Love the site, nice seeing the upgrades as I follow each episode chronologically. Stay safe!
WOW I am so glad you did the climbing l was wore out just riding along. Thank you
That was a close one, I almost slipped out of your pocket at 46.40 when you made adjustment. Hunkered down the rest of way out. Amazing how you keep going and going. Nice!!
Great mine, great job in explaining everything. As always a great video. Stay safe
Another terrific video Gly. Yours is one of only two mine explorer channels I sub to & it's number 1. Looks like the "escape" route had been backfilled to stop "tourists" & ", weekend warriors" from getting in with inevitable results.
“Gly”: Thanks Phillip! I really appreciate that and I’m happy your enjoying the channel. I didn’t notice it until I got back and reviewed the footage but there was a tiny amount of sunlight coming from the end of that drift. I would have had to do some digging but it’s quite possible I could have exited the mine from that location.
Thank you looks like you had a lot of fun you're on my bucket list to do hill climbing around in mines with you
That's quite the intro. I thought the world was about to explode.
Gly is Impressive enough without the Doom & Gloom Voice.
Hi Gly. I think I noticed daylight coming through where you got to the end of the escape route @45.25 mins. I'm not sure? Really enjoyed watching this one. Stay safe.
I came to post this. Could swear I saw daylight.
“Gly”: You are correct. There was a little bit of daylight at the end of that drift and I didn’t see it myself until I edited the video. Maybe with a little bit of digging I could have gotten out that way.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces I guess you have to go back lol
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces did you put,not,,on the sign ?.
Yep I saw the same.
Thanks for sharing ,loved it
Wow a very big mine. Thank you for taking us along. You always make it so interesting. Please be careful.
Another awesome vid Gly! You should do a video about your background and how you came to be so knowledgeable in mining. Inquiring minds wanna know!
look at his early episodes, his parents owned a mine
Great exploration. Loved the video. 👍👍👍👍
Very, very cool mine !!!!
Cool startup on this video
Oh man you missed your exit 15ft in front of you at 45:25, if you had finished that section out. Two thumbs up Gly!!!
“Gly”: Your right. I didn’t notice that small amount of sunlight until I got back and reviewed the footage.
Sharp eyes !
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces I was yelling at the screen from the future. It didnt help.
I saw the same thing and had to come check if anyone else had commented about it! 😅🤘
Was yelling, “𝑾𝒂𝒊𝒕“ at the TV screen!
Gly you have produced another wonderful and adventurous video. This mine was cool especially going up the escape route. Your explanation of the geology is always pleasing to me and I am sure others. Keep up the awesome work my friend!
Looking forward for the next excellent adventure.
Take care and be safe. Stay locked and loaded
Thank you that was awesome.
“Gly”: Thank you!
Thank you for the video. That was an amazing journey you took. You are a far braver man than I. I've explored a few myself and have at times to come into areas where the air was a bit thin. I'm always thankful I made the decision to turnaround and not press forward regardless of the temptation. Your video and audio quality is superb! Thanks again.
“Gly”: Thank you!
Stairway to heaven.
Looks like the helmet cam was a success! You should attach a light so that when you are looking around the light follows.
Wow , another endless mine .Thanks for the adventure and the history Gly. Pete Australia 👍
“Gly”: Thank you!
Wow that one was awesome! So much for the escape route though..
Gly, taking us in a mine that looks "plain jane" turns out to be the "Queen" with all it's treasures. BTW, all the ladders were great & going down is much easier....😉😉
Nice! Thanks gly
That was some adventure Gly. A darn shame the escape route was blocked after climbing all those rickety ladders. Thank you for sharing the explore. Take care and be safe. 👍❤️
Awesome video thank you so much wish I could go with you so cool
In case someone hasn't already said it. The drift you were in following the draft of air, did have some light coming through at the top of the blockage. So i think that this once was the exit which has since been blocked off.
Thats a pretty cool mine right there !
Fantastic Video Gly. The Bethlehem Wire Rope was made Bethlehem Pa about 2 hrs from where I use to live.
I really enjoy the videos!
Love the channel and thanks for the journey. Very cool.👍
Dang it Gly, you had my personal winky all puckerd tighter n.. a .....well......ahhh.. you know.....and it was too!! Those sketchy ladders over that one time fall hole was knarly....
I have to place this adventure in the category of... "It's o.k., I'm seeing this video so I know that he made it out"
Ladders hanging by a wire going up into something "Mole People" would have dug out. I mean for crying out loud Gly....
Great episode!! Easy thumbs up.
I keep reassuring myself the same way. I know he got out because he uploaded this video.
Wow that was a heck of a climb and really no way out so the long hall back down boy i would have been tired out for sure but never the less a great find and another great video. Thanks Gly i really enjoyed this one ....
“Gly”: Thank you!
YIKES, that sketchy ladder, that'd be where I stopped haha! Great video sir!
In a book called 'Death Scenes' I found an old photo of two, '..Teens who found dynamite at one of our dams..' It HAD gone-off and they were Not in a good way .. (at all. Actually, no one in that book was.) The book is a L.A. homicide detectives scrapbook. Only interesting here, in that you see the extent to which just 2 or 3 sticks of dynamite had done to the delicate human frame. Nasty. They were dead from the blast in their hands. The photo itself looks circa 193/40's. Great channel man.
“Gly”: I had a career in the explosives industry for 20 years and I’ve seen many things with my own eyes that’ll make you loose sleep. Unexploded dynamite is absolutely nothing to fool around with because it doesn’t come with a reset button.
Watching this great episode just before Halloween a thought occurred to me that those signs did not say escape route to OUTSIDE, but just escape route. Now I have to wonder about WHAT they were trying to escape from? LOL
That was so awesome!! I enjoy listening to your voice, i find it very pleasent. All the hard work that went into that mine! Wow!! Any idea how much gold was removed? Thanks for the adventure, looking forward to the next!!😃😃👍👍🗽🇺🇸
“Gly”: Thank you! No, unfortunately the mine report wasn’t that detailed.
Before the video even gets going I have to say every time your latest video comes on I drive my son nuts. I start humming just a loudly as I can your opening theme song..LOL
“Gly”: Better than a THX sound test! Lol
awsome mine thanks for the adventure
This is almost like therapy.. Face my fears sort of thing..
And some how I'm addicted.. I feel safe.. But I'm still rubbing that nerve... the one that keeps me out of places like this.. My Curiosity is heavy but my stay alive instinctive response is like ohhhh hell no...
That's one of the smartest comments in this video, like me I say hell no!!! Spiders and bats aren't on my list of things I want to encounter, plus loose rock and sketchy ladders.
Bob, you think someone was playing with you ?...About escape route...For me thats what it loos like....Bob you dident go in there alone did you?...That mine was big and not in too bad condition....Sure like the drone shots.....Thanks Bob.............
I am new to your channel but I enjoy watching you. I am not brave enough to enter a mine. Be safe
Totally Awesome video
“Gly”: Thank you!
I have My QuakeFeed App configured to monitor the seismic activity in Nevada. I had no idea it is so active. Every day there are at least two 3M temblors in the Tonopah, Nevada area., and a 3.5 to 4M at least once a week. Must be an interesting experience to be deep in and old mine when one of these events happens.
“Gly”: i’m staying out of soft strata mines like tungsten or talc mines for right now. I have been seeing recent earthquake damage in mines and you will see that in upcoming episodes.
Day light on the escape route where you picked up that paint can. End of that tunnel was light shining in
My claustrophobia was kicking in a little in the top of the escape route. I guess if you were big, you weren't escaping.
Or injured
It's probably dangerous, but I'd be tempted to take an entrenching tool. Army issue fold up shovel... with me and dig out a backfilled tunnel just to be able to get thru and explore the rest of the area. But I know, as always, safety comes first.
Forrest service probably back filled the hole
Hey Gly! Don't know if you remember me from previous comments in your other videos, but I'm just commenting to tell you that I figured out the trick to finding abandoned mines! Not gonna say how though, I don't want lots of people visiting these mines and increasing the chance of these precious mines being permanently sealed off! Anyways, the other day I found numerous abandoned mines in just one area, I went in one but immediately got out of it because there was a beehive in the adit. Went in a second one, also had to turn back because there were signs of mountain lions living in that mine, I'm talking HUGE piles of mountain lion poop all over the floor of that adit, and lots of mountain lion tracks left in the dirt going in and out of the adit. Very bad sign! I found a really good mine the third time around, no beehive, no traces of mountain lions, but I didn't go in it because it was getting dark out. Plan on going in it maybe Thursday, but it's not exactly close to home, lol. Maybe I'll even video it and post it on RUclips! I'll let you know. Peace out!
“Gly”: Just be careful out there and make sure your properly equipped and recovery plans in place.
@33:33 have you ever considered a 360 camera? you can edit them and pick a viewpoint frame while editing later I think. might be interesting for some spots, especially with a selfie stick. (not saying for this application, just had a thought when you mentioned new gear )
"Gly": I have a cool idea for a 360 camera but I don't want to revel that idea quite yet. Stay tuned!
Hey gly, try looking up the serial numbers on the boxes. It should tell you everything you need to know from that.
"Gly": I didn't notice it at first but the first dynamite box was from 1974. I would imagine the others are close to the same year.
Awesome man almost looks like a mine you'd see up where Frank is from
I can see a Holloween special. Glowing eyeballs. 😳
Kenneth Crips
“Gly”: Oh, I’m going to have so much fun producing this years 1st Halloween special. I have so many ideas. Lol
The drift you explored at the top of the escape ladders I could see some light coming from the top. A small opening. It looks like you missed it. The air was able to come in, so it had to be open a bit. Maybe next time turn your light off to see if you can see any light.
“Gly”: Yes, I missed it. I didn’t see the daylight until I reviewed the footage. I regret not turning off my lights for that moment.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces It looked kind of tight anyway. I'm not sure you would have been able to get out. I was hoping you could walk down the mountain just to see how far up the miners went. Enjoyed the video and I look forward to the next one. Have a great weekend.
I remember reading about Dupont. They started making dynamite and nitroglycerin back in 1880.
I like seeing hanging walls and foot walls in mines!
V don't speak English either, but that doesn't diminish the amazing experience of watching your video. Hello "" bass baritone "" "
Frank was there first and hung those old signs to get your goat :-) Regards from Ody Slim
“Gly”: I knew it! Ya gotta keep your eye on that crazy Canadian.
I'd have taken down those "escape signs" so no one else would climb all those ladders only to find out there is no escape route in that direction.
I think if You pushed some of those boards at the top out of the way you could have made it out... which is why its an escape route. They had to put the boards at the top to keep people from falling way down that stope.
“Gly”: Actually, the way out was by the black widow spider web drift. I didn’t notice the sunlight until I started editing the footage.
The sunlight rays was visible in the camera and filled in from above.
Glad you didn't snag your clothes on that nail halfway up the escape route. Well spotted, sir, and a interesting mine and video even by your usual standards.
“Gly”: Thank you!
Great video as normal ⛏⛏🤠
"Work is the only true escape." -whoever designed that "escape route"
At 24:35 , the one dynamite box has a label of "D 74 AU15 B" . I would believe that would be Date 1974 Aug 15.
"Gly": You are correct!
Another cool mine as always. Escape route eh? I'd definately want to pre-explore that little rats maze if working there incase it was needed as an escape route.
Ladder Cam is working pretty good.
“Gly”: I’ve made huge improvements to the helmet cam since this video. Failure is how learn to do something better 👍
At 6:08 - 2 o'clock and about 6-8" from the fuse - is that a blasting cap?
Have you ever seen something realy mysterious or spooky what was not an animal in these mines?I am a big Boy like you but i would allways literally shit myself in these dark places. You are a brave man
“Gly”: No, I’ve never seen or heard anything unexplainable in these places and I’ve been doing this for a very long time.
Nice
Got nothing to comment but nice explore!
Look at 43:45. After you move your light it looks like light is still shining at the top of that drift as well..
“Gly”: Yes, there was daylight up there but I didn’t notice it until I started editing. I regret not turning my lights off for a moment when I was there.
@@AbandonedandForgottenPlaces well it sounds to me like a good excuse for you to be able to go back. Have a good night, God bless!
24:39 August 15, 1974
Choice mine, choice vid Gly.
Is the red o0on the walls cinnabar? As always great vids.
You were so close from exit passage, that escape route wasn't completely blocked. There was daylight showing in there, maybe smaller person could still crawl out.
“Gly”: Yep, I missed it. My lights washed out the sunlight and I didn’t notice the small amount of light coming down into that drift.
I was wondering if your batteries have every died on an exploration?
Yeah, that escape route wasn't designed for us BIGGER guys lol. I'd take my chances becoming a permanent fixture of the mine.
It's the old "escape route" trick left by the last miner out to confabulate future mine explorers. ;*[}
This mine seems like it would take more of ya. Things started feeling closed in towards the top, yikes
Is it illegal to recover the steal from these abanded mines? I would love to collect enough abandoned rail to make a rail system around my property for future grandchildren. LOL. Plus any scrap steal collected would be great.
“Gly”: It’s illegal to remove cultural artifacts. Here’s the BLM’s official statement:
Cultural materials on public lands may not be removed, damaged, disturbed, excavated or transferred without BLM permit. Cultural resources include prehistoric and historic artifacts and sites, broken objects and debris more than 100 years old that were used or produced by humans. Protected materials include arrowheads and other stone tools, grinding stones, beads, baskets, pottery, old bottles, horse shoes, metal tools, graves and trash scatters.
Historic sites such as cabins, sawmills, graves, trail traces, mining areas, townsites, ranches and railroads are not open to collecting.
Metal detector use is allowed on public lands. Modern money may be collected, but coins and artifacts more than 100 years old may not be collected.
100K!
45:24 there's sunlight there my man. that's the backside of a filled addict. you probably could have dug your way out pretty easily
"Gly": Yes, my lighting obscured the sunlight and I missed it. next time I'm in that situation I will turn my lights off.
Seldoon Nemar. So that's where they put the "addicts"?? ❎ ( Addits ☑️ ).
*adits.
